The cruise ship visits are coming. And for once, the number 13 is lucky. Port Townsend and Port Angeles officials are ready to greet passengers on the American Spirit, a 100-passenger vessel operated by American Cruise Lines that will dock in the two North Olympic Peninsula ports o’ call this week for the first of 13 visits through October. Organizers in both communities say they have prepared unique experiences designed to give visitors a taste of the distinctive flavor and character of their towns. “This is a really great opportunity to welcome guests to our area, said Christina

The 100-passenger American Spirit specializes in intimate travel along inland waterways, such as the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound. That sentiment was echoed by Russ Pivarnik, marketing director of the city of Veenema, executive director of the Port Port Townsend. “It’s an economic development opportu- Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce. “The fact that they are coming in 13 nity. . . . One of opening day’s youngest anglers, Eli Rivera, 2, shows off trout caught at Anderson Lake on Saturday.

CHIMACUM — Anglers turned out in droves Saturday morning for the opening of the trout season at Anderson Lake following last year’s season, when high levels of toxins produced by blue-green algae denied them most opportunities. Those arriving early at the popular site in Anderson Lake State Park near Chimacum at the beginning of the state lowland lake fishing season made their limits and were satisfied with the results, volunteer Cheri Scalf said. “The success rate is high in terms of the fish caught, but [the fish] aren’t as big as last year, Scalf said. BRINNON — In this South County town, the Loyalty Day celebration is a rite of spring. “This is a big deal here, said Joy Baisch, who has lived in Brinnon for 23 years. “Everyone comes out, young and old, and it gives us a chance to see that we’ve all made it safely through the winter. About 300 people turned out Friday on a day that began gloomy but segued into bright sunshine by the time the parade — the 26th annual — started at 1 p.m. TURN

PORT TOWNSEND — Election season begins in earnest in Jefferson County in two weeks. That’s when voting-age citizens who want to run for office in the Nov. 5 general election must make their intentions official. Candidates must file their dec-

larations of candidacy the week of May 13-17 to run for any of the 48 seats on the 25 elected councils, boards and commissions on which the elected positions are up for grabs. These potential public officials

will compete for voters’ approval to pass budgets, set policies and represent voters — and taxpayers — in political entities in Jefferson County ranging from the Port of Port Townsend to Brinnon Park & Recreation District 2. The declaration of candidacy can be filed in person at the county elections office in the basement of the county courthouse,
