$1.6 million yacht donation floats maritime center’s boat Expanding chances
for educational cruises among uses BY CHARLIE BERMANT PENINSULA DAILY NEWS
PORT TOWNSEND — The gift of a $1.6 million yacht to the Northwest Maritime Center will enable it to expand its educational offerings greatly, said the
organization’s executive director. “Can you believe it?” Jake Beattie said of the gift, which was made in August and announced last week. “It’s impressive to me when people show that kind of generosity.” John Shelton, a retired real estate developer who shares his time between Friday Harbor and Patagonia, Ariz., donated a 62-foot Nordhavn motor yacht, the Undine, to the maritime center. “I’m getting older and thought it was time to slow down a bit,” said Shelton, 86. “I’m only up here three months out of
very year, and I wanted to put it to better use than having it sit around just waiting for me.” Shelton had owned the vessel since 1997, sailing it to Costa Rica, to Alaska and around the Pacific Northwest. In addition to the Undine, Shelton donated a 26-foot diesel motor launch/ workboat and four rowing/sailing dinghies in mint condition. All the donated vessels will be put to use in the maritime center’s adult and youth programs, Beattie said. TURN

PORT TOWNSEND — The mother of a 15-year-old teen who disappeared Friday said her daughter, Phoebe Marie McHenry, was happy as she walked her younger sister to school that morning. “She said, ‘I love you,’” when she left, said a distraught Evelyn Michelle McHenry, who said she was waiting by the telephone for news of her daughter. “She was happy for her sister because her sister had a sleepover yesterday. She was really happy for her,” the Port Townsend woman said. “She just disappeared.” Police describe her as 6 feet tall and weighing 300 pounds, with hair that is black and red. She possibly is wearing black spandex pants and a Seahawks hoodie. According to Port Townsend Officer Patrick Fudally, Evelyn McHenry told police Phoebe had not returned home from the OCEAN (Opportunity, Community, Experience, Academics and Navigation) Program on Grant Street in Port Townsend. Officers discovered she had not attended school but had been seen in the area around 12:30 p.m. Her cell phone was located through a cell tower near Marysville at 3:25 p.m. Friday, the same time a friend received a Facebook message from Phoebe saying “help.” TURN

County pins aid Coronation for real royalty Disabled student hopes on feds elected No. 1 guy BY CHARLIE BERMANT PENINSULA DAILY NEWS
PORT TOWNSEND — The Jefferson County Public Utility District manager hopes to receive about $300,000 in federal aid for repairs to electrical utility infrastructure damaged in a late August windstorm that put some 12,000 customers in the dark. President Barack Obama signed a disaster declaration Thursday to repair or replace facilities damaged in the Aug. 29 storm. Jefferson County was among those listed to receive help. Jim Parker, PUD manager,
said he applied for the funds to cover money spent on utility damage. The cost is ongoing, he said, because several utility poles downed during the storm have yet to be repaired. Keppie Keplinger, spokeswoman for the Jefferson County Department of Emergency Management, said the PUD was the only county agency to apply for the funds. But that could change. “Now that the order has been signed, other agencies can apply,” she said. TURN

SEQUIM – Homecoming king today; tomorrow, who knows? “He’s got the confidence to keep on going,” said Teresa Barrett, whose 17-year-old son Nick, who has Down syndrome, was elected the No. 1 guy at Sequim High School on Friday. He learned last week that he’d received enough votes to be on the homecoming court, thanks to what KEITH THORPE/PENINSULA DAILY NEWS his mother called “a snowball” of Sequim homecoming senior royalty King Nick Barrett and support from other students.
