Prairie dog charity event One lucky PA pharmacist gets to kiss the furry rodent BY ARWYN RICE PENINSULA DAILY NEWS
PORT ANGELES — Kissing pigs has become too mainstream for Jim’s Pharmacy, so when it was decided the business would host a fundraiser for the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society, pharmacists found a far less common animal to kiss on the Olympic Peninsula: a prairie dog. Four pharmacists at Jim’s Pharmacy — owner Joe Cammack, Tom Lindley, Brig Consoliver and Sue Purvis — have volunteered to be the one to kiss the furry rodent in exchange for
Pet Store in Port Angeles. Votes are in the form of $1 bills placed in a box with the picture of the LINDA CAMERON pharmacist of choice at Jim’s PharJim’s Pharmacy customer service manager macy, 424 E. Second St.

JOYCE — A Port Angeles man captured after he was bitten by the Port Angeles Police Department’s newest police dog remained in the Clallam County jail Thursday after allegedly leading police on a pursuit that approached 100 mph in a car that had been reported stolen. Christopher Michael White, 23, was arrested at about 10:30 p.m. Monday after a quartermile search in the woods near the 200 block of Bishop Road, where Officer Lucas DeGand and his K-9 partner, Bogey, eventually caught up with him, said Brian Smith, deputy Port Angeles Officer Lucas DeGand and Bogey police chief. White was treated and discharged from Olympic Medical Center for wounds on his right arm and booked into the jail Tuesday morning for investigation of one count each of eluding a police vehicle and possession of a stolen vehicle, two separate arrest warrants and a violation of community custody conditions placed on him by the state Department of Corrections. Bogey’s and DeGand’s assistance was requested to help with the search alongside Clallam County sheriff’s deputies, State Patrol troopers and Lower Elwha Klallam tribal police, Smith said. When a Lower Elwha Klallam officer tried to pull White over earlier in the evening, he took off, according to Deputy Shaun Minks’ arrest reported filed in Clallam County Superior Court, and the pursuit ended in the grass along Bishop Road, south of state Highway 112, after reaching speeds of up to 100 mph. House OKs $160 million fix to Wash. estate tax BY RACHEL LA CORTE THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
OLYMPIA — The state House on Thursday approved a legislative fix to a court ruling on the estate tax, a move meant to prevent issuing millions of dollars in refunds that were set to go out today. The House passed the measure on a 53-33 vote and sent it over to the Senate, which could take action on it later in the day. House leaders said the language of the bill has been agreed to by the Senate; however, Senate leaders said a deal isn’t in place just yet. Officials with the state Department of Revenue have
said the state could have to pay out $160 million over the next two years if the fix isn’t made to the law. The figure includes money lost through refunds and a decline in future collections.

Lawmakers are trying to reach a deal in time to prevent the first $13 million the state agency said it must send to 10 estates before a 9 a.m. court hearing today unless a measure is passed and signed into law. Additional checks are being processed to be sent out in coming weeks.
PORT ANGELES — Mason Ziegler was the kind of person you could always depend on. “He was the counselor to all his friends,” said Tami Ziegler, who is organizing a memorial scholarship benefit for her son’s graduating class. “He was the kid that everybody turned to.” The Port Angeles High School honor student died last August in a motorcycle accident on the Oregon Coast. He was 16.

Focus on integrity Kelly Ziegler, Mason’s father, said the scholarship is “probably going to focus more, I would assume, on integrity.” “That’s what he was about,” he said, adding that his son was “easygoing” and “got along with everybody.” TURN
