Kenmore Air Express, shown landing one of its Cessna Caravan aircraft from Seattle’s Boeing Field last March, will end the North Olympic Peninsula’s only scheduled passenger service Nov. 15.

PORT ANGELES — Kenmore Air Express will stop providing the only scheduled commercial air passenger service on the North Olympic Peninsula on Nov. 15. Kenmore flies small planes, usually the Cessna Grand Caravan holding up to nine passengers, between William R. Fairchild International Airport in Port Angeles and Boeing Field in Seat-

tle, and shuttles riders to and from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Years of declining ridership and increasing costs Banks have taken their toll, company President Todd Banks said Friday. “We are stopping,” Banks said in an interview Friday. “We are not going to operate a scheduled service out there.” Banks said in a news release that “the decision was reached with great difficulty.” “We have worked very hard for more than 10 years to establish an economically viable route between Seattle and Port Angeles.” TURN

Just as the holidays loom, the North Olympic Peninsula will lose its only scheduled air passenger service. How will residents travel off the Peninsula to visit friends and families? How will visitors arrive? Other than making the drive to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport or taking a taxi, two bus services and a charter flight service are available. TURN

‘We’re up and running’ Underpass beneath U.S. 101 circumvents left-turn nightmares BY ROB OLLIKAINEN PENINSULA DAILY NEWS

PORT ANGELES — Except for final landscaping at the Deer Park rest area east of Port Angeles, the Clallam County underpass project is complete, a county engineer said. “We’re up and running,” Associate Engineer Joe Donisi said. “Basically, the project is completed. We are moving on.” The underpass replaces two U.S. Highway 101 intersections by connecting Deer Park Road and Buchanan Drive. Left turns across the four-lane highway, which have caused several fatal wrecks, are now restricted. Motorists instead are using a new county road called Deer Park Loop to get from one side of the highway to the other.
