SNP Victory Leaves Rift Between Penicuik Councillors

H

istory has been made as the Scottish Nationalist Party gains control of Midlothian, leaving Labour out in the cold. In May’s Council Election eight SNP councillors were voted in along with eight Labour, one Greens and one independent. This meant a coalition had to be formed. The independent councillor, Peter de Vink, quickly sided with the SNP and although the Greens councillor, Ian Baxter, didn’t want to enter a formal coalition with the SNP he vowed that he would vote

for the SNP’s provost. Meanwhile in Penicuik, Labour’s Adam Montgomery was voted in along with SNP’s Derek George Rosie and Joe Wallace. However a friendship between them seems unlikely as Adam Montgomery snapped at his fellow councillors about his many years of experience and then refused to shake the hands with the SNP. It looks as if he is disappointed in Penicuik for voting them in but the SNP’s Derek George Rosie did prove more popular than Adam Montgomery with 1427 to 1363 first preference votes.

On the other hand though Joe Wallace only scraped in at the seventh stage just narrowly beating Sheila Thacker. The question is whether the people of Penicuik changed their mind after voting labour for years or whether the new voting system swung the election in the SNPs favour. Many believe the second option but over the coming months (and years) we’ll see whether the public made the right choice as Penicuik possibly goes through the most important fours years for a while as the forementioned “improvements” begin.
