Message From The Director & Supervisor

Director’s Message Summer is just around the corner! As you make your summer plans I hope that you will look to Penfield Recreation to help fill your busy summer schedule. We have made several adjustments to some of the popular summer programs offered including the summer camp format and the summer concert series has a NEW look. Be sure to check out all of the numerous programs that the staff have coordinated for the summer season. I am sure you will find a number of programs that will interest you; whether you’re interested in taking a class to just sitting in a lawn chair and enjoying some music during the evening, we have you covered! I am pleased to report that the department’s update of the Recreation and Parks Master Plan has been completed. The update took 10 months to compile and coordinate. We were able to complete the update completely in house with a dedicated committee of Penfield residents, town staff and town board. Thank you to those who volunteered to be a part of this committee and the time and energy you gave to the process. Without your dedication and assistance this plan would not be as informative and valuable! I would also like to thank all those residents who participated in the process; from the community input survey to the community input session, we received a lot of useful feedback. The

Master Plan identified 4 dimensions to recreation and each area has its own set of recommendations. A few of the recommendation highlights from the update include the following: Dimension 1: Indoor Facilities - The town should begin a facility improvement plan immediately to identify the facility components best suited for the community. Dimension 2: Parks - Begin to develop new athletic fields to meet the needs of the community. Dimension 3: People - Focus programming opportunities to the 20-39 age group as that is an area currently underserved by the department. Dimension 4: Programs - Programming focus should be focused on the areas of health and wellness, performing arts, and education programs. These are just a few of the recommendations and I encourage you to look at the document (available at www.penfieldrec.org). I am excited to see these recommendations become reality in the next 5 years. Based on the implementation of the last master plan recommendations update I expect to see similar success! Have a great season and all the best to you and your families.

Christopher K. Bilow Recreation Director

Supervisor’s Message

It is good to be writing about upcoming summer programs and activities compared to what seemed to be a never-ending winter with snow, cold temperatures, icy conditions, major wind events, and generally challenging weather. As always, I like to give a shout-out and thank you this time of year to our DPW for their hard work to keep our roadways safe and passable for all. While most of us are all looking to hunker down in our homes, they are out in severe conditions clearing the way for our travels. Thank you for all your efforts! There are many active initiatives underway in Penfield since last fall that will begin to wind down as the year progresses. First is the Recreation Master Plan update led by Recreation Director Chris Bilow and a team of employees and residents. This plan is updated every five years. It functions as a thorough review of program, facilities, and staffing needs for the next five year period and serves as “table-stakes” for any potential funding or grant opportunities. The update is scheduled to be completed and forwarded to the town board by mid-April for review and adoption. The next initiative is the Shadow Pines Land Use Advisory Committee. This group of residents and staff members has been meeting for about seven months discussing possible uses for this 206-plus acre property. I anticipate that over the next four to six weeks the committee will be making their recommendations to the town board. The board will review those recommendations and determine the next steps forward for use of this wonderful community asset. Lastly, the 2020 Comprehensive Plan Update Committee is in full swing reviewing past and present plans and formulating recommendations to provide an overall framework for future public and private investment in our community for the coming decade. This plan will establish policies 4

Summer 2019

and strategies to achieve the future vision for Penfield. It is anticipated the committee will complete their work by the end of 2019. As we head into late spring and early summer, our Pen-Rec team is finalizing plans for the Memorial Day “Ceremony of Remembrance” to be held on Monday, May 27 at 10:30 AM. This year’s guest speaker will be Monroe County’s Director of Veterans Service Agency, Nicholas Stefanovic. Mr. Stefanovic is a veteran and Penfield resident; we look forward to his message at this very popular event. Additionally, the Penfield Amphitheater & Kiwanis Stage summer concert series will take on a new look with a longer season and more musical programs for our residents to enjoy. Please be sure to join in— there will be music for the whole family. I look forward to seeing you at this year’s events! This brochure contains a wealth of information on program offerings for residents of all ages, messages from sponsors who help cover or offset the cost of programs, and general contact information for permits and reservations. I would like to recognize all of our sponsors and encourage you to support them as you are doing business in Penfield. Healthy businesses make for a healthy community. I would also like to recognize and thank the Recreation Department team for all their efforts in expanding the number of programs and increasing participation. Penfield Recreation is one of the leaders in community recreation in the county! The team, led by Director Chris, includes Andrew, Linanne, Pam, Sabrina, Sarah, Anne, and Paula… great job all and thank you! I look forward to seeing you out in the community or at the town hall. Thank you for the input and feedback about what you like about Penfield and, equally important, for your thoughts about what we could be doing better or differently. Enjoy your spring and summer!

Terry Rothfuss Memorial

Good Neighbor Day Join “Terry’s Team” to help your neighbors!

Saturday, May 11 • 8 AM - 12 PM We are looking for volunteers for the 3rd annual Terry Rothfuss Memorial Good Neighbor Day to help seniors, veterans, or those who are disabled to do light yard work and spring clean-up. We need volunteers of all ages, so bring the whole family!

Know someone who could use the extra hand? Let us know! We will rake out flower beds, plant flowers, fix lawn damage from plows, and much more!

Terry Rothfuss was a farmer in east Penfield who was a friend to all. He was always ready and willing to help anyone at any time. When he passed away in 2014 there was a huge hole left in the community. His friends and family want to carry on Terry’s legacy of friendship by continuing to help their community and inspire others to do the same.

Whether you are an experienced gardener or a beginner you probably know that harvesting fresh food from your back yard is one of the great joys of gardening. One of the key garden players, the herbs, are often overlooked! Herbs have a job of making ordinary meals into something special. A bit of this and a pinch of that will convert a pedestrian dinner into a feast. Herbs can turn food for the body into manna for the spirit. Their special colors and fragrances can bring variety and interest to an otherwise bland garden landscape. They belong in the garden planted either by themselves or mixed with other veggies or flowers. They can also beautify your patio, doorsteps, hallway or windowsill. In this class, the participants will learn the benefits of herb growing and their use for cooking, learn about the soil conditions needed for a healthy, productive herb garden and see a demonstration on how to design their own patio herb container. Meditation is not just about being quiet nor is it about the absence of challenges. It is about being the witness or observer of one’s life experiences. Through increasing awareness, we learn to transcend the ego that thrives on drama, pain and suffering. Meditation develops concentration and promotes deep relaxation, with the brain emitting alpha and theta waves. These waves have the power to calm the mind, relax the body and balance and harmonize the discordant energies within us. When we allow meditation to become a part of our lives, we are in reality reconnecting to the sacred silence that resides in us and allows the inner peace to permeate in our outer life. The sessions will include the use of the crystal singing bowls and how these sounds can expedite one’s healing and transformation.

(There is a blank form in this brochure or download a form from our website www.penfieldrec.org) Classes are held at the Penfield Community Center, 1985 Baird Rd. The building schedule for the week is posted at both ends of the hall. There is no reserved seating. Our DEAR participants are truly some of the kindest and most approachable people you will ever have the privilege to meet. • Is there transportation available? • Do you repeat programs? Yes, especially those classes with large waiting lists. • What if I register for a program but can’t attend all the scheduled classes? Missing a class or two is not an issue. However, if you find you will miss half of the session or decide a class is not for you, please call the Recreation Department to let us know. There are often waiting lists and we would like to give someone else the opportunity to attend. PLEASE DO NOT REGISTER FOR A CLASS YOU WILL NOT ATTEND! There are expenses for each program. Running a class is based on the number of registrations we receive prior to the class beginning. If there is low interest we will cancel the program. We cannot cancel a class due to low attendance once it has begun. By registering for a class, you have told us you want us to allocate funds to run the program. • Do I need to sign in for class? Yes. We request participants to sign in when they arrive for class. This will help us keep track of participation and attendance. • Is there a charge for the coffee? No. Coffee is complimentary. • I have an idea for a possible program. Do I have to be a seasoned instructor? How do I go about offering one at DEAR? We are always looking for new and interesting subjects to add to the schedule and volunteers to facilitate them. You do not have to have experience. The DEAR program celebrates the philosophy “it’s never too late to do anything”. If you have an idea and would like to follow through with organizing one, contact Pam Gerace at Penfield Recreation. Pam is the Recreation Supervisor who coordinates the DEAR program and can be found in the Recreation Department or call her at 340-8664. • What if I have an idea but don’t know how to go about putting it together? The DEAR Advisory Board will help you put a program together. We also will have training sessions to teach PowerPoint and tips for using the internet. • Can I donate to DEAR? Yes. Donations are vital to keeping our classes free. We are so grateful to all of the people who have generously given these last few years. Checks, cash and credit cards are all accepted and appreciated. Checks can be made out to Penfield Recreation (DEAR). • Classes are now listed by day of the week in chronological order.

Besides the more well-known podcasts like Ted Talk, Wait Wait Don’t Tell me and Lore, there are literally hundreds of thousands of programs out there from shows on politics to personal stories, cooking, science, true crime, aliens, hauntings, brain science, astronomy, cars, meditation, spirituality, dogs, cats and the list goes on. Date May 9 May 9

Time Lunch 11:45AM Lecture 12:30PM

This lecture is re-scheduled from the winter session. Like Art Nouveau, the objects of the Arts and Crafts Movement were part of a rebellion, in this case, against the onset of the machine age. Here the look was simple, direct, with emphasis on the handmade, rather than machine made. The movement started in England, but when it reached America, we found it necessary to use machines to create the hand-made look, in order to make objects affordable. No longer was the Arts and Crafts Movement only for the wealthy. (If you have previously registered for this lecture please re-register. This summer’s read touches on Rochester’s most famous entrepreneur and philanthropist. Elizabeth Brayer’s book is a contemporary read that not only explores Eastman’s professional achievements but also allows us to see the quiet and complicated character of the man. It is also a detailed picture of life in Rochester at the beginning of the 20th century. “The astute selection of letters and quotations from more than 20,000 records is a signal achievement. This biography is a fine window on the life of a most unusually talented, interesting, and deeply thoughtful man.” --JOURNAL OF IMAGING SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY. This book discussion will meet once a week thoughout August. This September a George Eastman Tour of Rochester, with George Eastman Legacy Curator Kathy Connor will be offered allowing readers to visit some of the locations mentioned in the book. Please note books are not provided for this discussion.

Fee $10

Since their earliest years, Stickley has invited the public to visit their factory and see for themselves how the furniture is made. It was an extension of what Gustav Stickley termed “Honest Furniture.” This tradition of earnest furniture-making still exists today at the Manlius, New York factory, where the very essence of Stickley—inventive technology joined with time-tested principles of hand craftsmanship—continues. Lunch on your own will be at the Craftsman Grill after the factory tour, followed by a stop at the Stickley Museum. Van will leave the Penfield Community Center promptly at 7:45 AM. Fees: Fees are due at time of registration. No exceptions. Refunds: Refunds are available as noted below, unless otherwise stated in the program description. All refund requests must be submitted to the Penfield Recreation Office. 1. If a class is cancelled, total amount will be refunded. 2. You may withdraw up to one week prior to the start of a class; a refund will be granted less $10.00 processing fee per person/per course. (N.B.: certain courses may also be non-refundable or involve a portion of non-refundable monies.) As a courtesy, please notify the Recreation Department if you are dropping out of a class so that we may activate from a waiting list. Thank you! 3. Within one week of a program’s start date, or after a program has begun, medical (only) refunds will be granted. A doctor’s written statement must accompany your request. The refund amount is subject to a $10.00 processing fee and will be pro-rated based upon the date of your notification to the Recreation Office, not the date of your injury/illness. 4. If refund is more than 180 days from initial registration date and it was paid by credit card, refund will be issued by check only. 5. Absolutely no refunds after a program has ended. 6. NEW! In some instances, a household credit will be issued in lieu of a check refund or credit card refund. Household credits must be used within the calendar year. For household credit and refund process contact Recreation Department. Transfers: You may transfer up to one week prior to the start of class. No transfers once a class has begun.
