Director’s Message The winter season is quickly approaching and the early signs are that it will be a cold and snowy winter. As the recreation department continues to emphasize Wellness in all of our programs, I would like to challenge the residents of Penfield to take advantage of the numerous programs offered in this brochure. Supervisor’s Message - Tony LaFountain, Penfield Town Supervisor As I write this message we have received our first snow and freezing temperatures of the 2014-15 winter season. Like it or not we have three to four months of wintry weather ahead! As a reminder, winter parking rules are in effect from November 15 through April 1. This means no parking is allowed on all roads and highways 2:00 to 7:00 a.m. to permit highway crews to safely and effectively plow and maintain roads. Thank you in advance for your understanding and support on this matter.

Allow me to provide you a brief re-cap of 2014 accomplishments: Our DPW completed the Baird Road re-construction and construction of Motts Lane extension. They continued their aggressive program of drainage improvements, and cleaned more than 10 miles of sanitary sewers.

PenRec has shattered all program and participation numbers through the third quarter, exceeding other past full-year participation records.

New construction of homes and commercial property remained steady, providing an assessment growth of 3.20 percent to help fund increasing mandated services from state and federal governments without having to raise property taxes. The Penfield Public Library continues to expand services for all ages in an everchanging climate of more electronic and digital resources.

What is planned for 2015? Completion of the long-awaited Mixed Use Plan for the Route 250 corridor north and south of Atlantic Avenue and the Manitou Lake property located in the Panorama Plaza area; further growth in solar energy power to help reduce overall utility costs of municipal buildings; partnership growth with school districts and surrounding communities to expand shared services programs to help manage overall costs; Penfield Recreation

SCHAUFELBERGER PARK This decorative park sits in the heart of Penfield’s Historic Four Corners.

SHERWOOD FIELDS PARK 2514 Penfield Rd. (located east of fire hall) 82-acre passive park, primary walking trails through field areas. No restrooms - closes at dusk.

VETERANS’ MEMORIAL PARK 3100 Atlantic Ave. Open pavilion and enclosed heated Dolomite Lodge (available by permit), outdoor amphitheater, lighted tennis and basketball courts (5/1-10/30), baseball, softball, multi-use fields, Veterans’ Memorial, beautiful Don Mack Rock Garden, walkways, playground area, nature trail, physical fitness trail, Tot Trail, arboretum, public restrooms and picnic facilities.

PERMITS AND RESERVATIONS

All persons/groups wishing to reserve use of park shelters and/or ball fields must obtain a permit. All park permits are processed through the Penfield Recreation Department. You must be 21 years or older, and come to the recreation office in person to sign a permit and pay related fees, or go on-line at www.penfieldrec.org. Permit acceptance for the year 2015 began December 4. Drinking of alcohol is allowed in Town picnic areas only with a permit. No amplified music allowed. Please Note: Vandalism in any park is expensive and senseless. Help us keep the Town of Penfield parks beautiful. Also remember not to park in handicap zones, emergency or fire lanes, as tickets are issued regularly.

Scenic Treks The Penfield Trails Committee invites Penfield and area residents to participate in a series of guided hikes. All events are held rain or shine.

Aquatic Wellness Swim Lessons Tiny Tadpoles Ages 4 - 5

Aquatic Wellness Discover Scuba Diving

Competitive Swimming Intro Springboard Diving

The Discover Scuba Diving program allows those who have never tried the activity to safely experience the thrill. This class includes a brief orientation followed by your first underwater experience in a swimming pool. Students need to bring swimsuit and a towel (and if you have mask and fins, please bring them.) Some swimming experience is helpful.

An opportunity for youth to experience the fun of competitive swimming in a noncompetitive atmosphere. Must be able to swim one lap of the pool on front and back using any stroke (ages 6 - 18). This program is operated in conjunction with Sea Dragons Swim Club.

Lifeguarding Course with Waterfront Module

Red Cross Certified Lifeguard Class

Class will meet at the Penfield High School pool. This course certifies a person to serve as a pool and waterfront lifeguard.

Instruction also includes training in First Aid, CPR and AED for a total program. (It’s recommended that you have a minimum of Level 5 swimming skills.)

Lifeguard books and materials will be available to pick up at Recreation Office when you register. Read lifeguard book prior to first class. Bring suit, goggles, towel, lifeguard book and materials to all class sessions. (Swimming requirements during course includes a 2-minute tread water, 550-yard swim using freestyle and breast strokes, as well as a timed surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieving a 10 lb. object, then swimming 20 yards with object held by both hands.)

This course involves the use of one-meter springboards. Instruction is individualized so that each student may progress at his or her own rate. The diver will be encouraged to go as far as he/she desires at each level.

Parent observation is encouraged.

Beginner - A beginner

diver is a swimmer who can do a standing dive off the side of the pool. This diver is looking to dive off the board comfortably. The instruction will include: front dive, back dive, inward dive and the front flip, if the diver desires.

Intermediate - An intermediate diver is a swimmer

Youth Wellness Indoor Lacrosse Boys Instructional Beginner/Intermediate Designed for newer lacrosse players or those who may have developed stick skills on their own but not yet played organized lacrosse. Also appropriate for players interested in trying out for the scholastic modified team for the first time and/or PYL players still learning the fundamentals of the game. Instruction in all basics: throwing, catching, ground balls, positions, etc. as well as instruction on game flow, transition play, and what to expect when entering your first game. Participants must supply their own stick. Other equipment supplied in cooperation with the Penfield Youth Lacrosse organization - see information below concerning equipment distribution.

This course involves the use of one-meter springboards. Instruction is individualized so that each student may progress at his or her own rate. The diver will be encouraged to go as far as he/she desires at each level.

Red Cross Lifeguarding Course for Pool/Waterfront

ALL AGE DIVISIONS: Children will be assigned to a designated team.

Teams will have a consistent person(s) who will coach/facilitate that “team” for the duration of the season. All league/program activities take place on Penfield Town parkland and/or School District properties. Practices are scheduled on a day, time, and location of the individual coach’s discretion. No recreation soccer is played the week of June 29 - July 3.

*To qualify for an age group the child must be that age by the end of the program (i.e. - a 6 year-old who will turn 7 before July 31 is eligible for the 7 age group.)

GENERAL LEAGUE FORMAT - The learning environment of the age divisions of the Penfield Recreation soccer program is structured to progress children through game/activity experiences appropriate to their developing physical and mental abilities. In the 6 & 7 divisions the children play the Micro format. 8 and above divisions play regular formatted soccer.

REQUESTS: Although we attempt to meet requests for team placement (i.e. play with friend, neighbor, particular coach), THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY NO GUARANTEES! COACHES: VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!! Teams are coached by enthusiastic persons who volunteer their time so that children may enjoy the sport. We need your support! If you would like to volunteer your services, please indicate on the registration form.

These youth need your support and interest! Before the start of the program all coaches are invited to a coaches meeting on May 19 to discuss their league format.

REFUNDS: All refunds are based upon date of notification to the Penfield Recreation Office.

PROGRAM OPERATION: 6 Division: Children meet one night per week (choose Tuesday or Thursday) from 6:30 - 7:30 pm. Parents will receive a letter in late May with specific details of when and where the program will operate. Children will take home a program soccer ball at the conclusion of the program.

7 Division: Children meet two times per week. Coaches will hold one practice per week - location, time, and day scheduled at their discretion. Meeting time on Mondays is either 6:15 or 7:15 pm; boys and girls alternate times weekly and will receive a schedule for the entire program on the first meeting night. Halfway into the season, teams will begin play against one another in fun, micro format “games.”

8-13 Divisions: Children will be contacted by their coach in late May; practices will begin at that time. Teams usually play one game per week between the hours of 6:00 - 8:30 pm. Games are generally played on the designated night although some alternate play days may be necessary. Practice locations, days, and times, may vary from week to week and are held at the discretion of the coach.

Youth Wellness Day Camp Penfield Recreation’s Summer Day Camp program offers a wide range of activities and experiences. Day Camp will provide each child an opportunity to explore new activities along with the fun and enjoyment of all the past favorites. During the course of the summer, offerings may include: active games, quiet games, arts/crafts, sports activities, field days, specials and an event or two with other day camp sites. Each day camp will also offer unique activities planned by individual site staff. *Each camp session will include a bowling field trip.

Registration: Register for any or all of the sessions offered. Please note session dates, playground sites and registration fee (per child) for each session. Please indicate second/third choices on the registration form should you be closed out of your first choice. The Community Center option does fill quickly.

Camp Information: Ages - Completion of Kindergarten-14 years M - F 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Lunch hour: Noon - 1:00 PM (Supervised) You must provide your own lunch.

Preschool Day Camp is designed to create an atmosphere where Pre-Schoolers are encouraged to participate in games and activities that promote positive interaction and cooperation. Activities are conducted within a playful learning environment.

Puppy Kindergarten Start your puppy’s training off right! This six-week class is the start to your puppy’s socialization, focus and basic training. Your instruction includes housebreaking, problem solving, body language and the start to your beginning obedience commands. This class is open to dogs eight weeks to six months old. Exercise your mind, meet new people every Tuesday.

The Tuesday Game Day has grown with folks just stopping by to see what’s going on in the community room every Tuesday around 9:30 AM. People begin to drift in, grabbing a cup of coffee and then heading to a game table. What’s going on is a variety of spirited games that are taking root from table to table. Some folks play cards, some play dominoes, quite a few have taken to Scrabble and before you know it we have a room full of card-playing, domino-counting, word-creating fun! Stop by and join a table or start a new game on your own. There is always complimentary coffee, tea and hot chocolate, and if you stay long enough (most do), a homemade sit down lunch is served at noon for only $4. Registration is not required but you must purchase lunch tickets at least 24 hours in advance at the Recreation office.

Historic Corn Hill and its Arts Festival In 2009, long-time Corn Hill resident and author Rob Goodling published his book Corn Hill and its Arts Festival, the First Forty Years. Based on his five-year research project for this book, Mr. Goodling has prepared a Power Point presentation that colorfully illustrates the early beginnings of Rochester’s oldest residential neighborhood, its renovation achievements during the 1960s and ‘70s, and the evolution and growth of its nationally acclaimed arts festival. This fascinating story is an important part of Rochester history that everyone will want to see and hear.

During the past 32 years, Mr. Goodling has owned and rehabilitated Corn Hill’s historic Jacob Irwin House—a Second Empire Victorian city landmark. Currently he is serving a 5th term as President of the Corn Hill Neighbors Association and its board of directors.

Norman Rockwell Inspired by the Masters of Art

Author Elizabeth Osta Jeremiah’s Hunger

Albrecht Durer, Rembrandt, Pieter Bruegel the Elder--just a few of Rockwell’s favorite artists. He was greatly influenced by these masters of great art and borrowed many surprising elements when creating some of his paintings. This lecture will take a look at some of Rockwell’s paintings that clearly pay homage to the master artists who created them. An interesting look at the life and work of America’s most relatable and popular artist.

Jeremiah’s Hunger is a compelling dramatic novel set in the dire throws of Ireland’s devastating potato famine in the mid 19th century. “When Jeremiah Buckley buries his baby sister and his mother in a hillside in County Cork in the midst of An Gorta Mor (the Great Hunger), his grief turns to rebellion and commitment to the land as he works to achieve a dream which will echo over the centuries and as far away as America.” Author Elizabeth Osta will share her connection to this story and her efforts to tell her family’s story.

No lecture on 2/12 Susan B. Anthony Many people in Rochester are familiar with Susan B. Anthony and her colleagues Elizabeth Stanon and Lucretia Mott in their fight for women’s rights and suffrage.

The fight for women’s suffrage spanned 100 years. In that time, there were many important figures that came before and after the “big three” that significantly advanced the cause of women’s rights leading to the suffrage amendment. We will learn more about figures such as the Grimke sisters, Lucy Stone, Carrie Chapman and Alice Paul among others.

A New Age for Hearing We will discuss the psychological ramifications of hearing loss and seeking treatment for hearing loss. Dr. Jared Teter, owner of Hearcare Hearing Center in Penfield will be presenting on this topic and answer questions you have. Dr. Teter was born with hearing loss and has worn hearing aids for most of his life.

Many people are living with hearing loss but aren’t aware of the new technologies available today. Many people wonder why hearing aids cost so much today and he will address this question.

Plagues Upon the History of Human Kind/Global Devisation/Global Control The source of pestilence upon the human populations have had periodic outbreaks from ancient time up to the present, interrupting the so-called progress of civilization. Join DEAR facilitator Nels Carman for this interesting look at the history of plagues and how we as a species have learned to control the natural disasters that have threatened human existence.

Nels will conclude with an update on the fighting tools of today as well as current public health policies.

The Life of Eleanor Roosevelt DEAR facilitator John Schmeelk will share his in-depth research on Eleanor Roosevelt. His fascination with this iconic woman began when he met her as a young Political Science student. Eleanor touched the heart of a nation with her strong moral beliefs and her determined will to help those less fortunate in the world. Plagued with a lifetime of self doubt and little self confidence, she proved to herself and the world that doing something that frightened you once a day, was the only way to embrace your life.

The Spiritualist movement of the 19th century was just one of the many new faiths that arrived with the second Great Awakening, but it would be one of the most influential for social reform. This religion embraced and showcased women as vocal powerhouses that could stream important ethical and moral messages from the highly evolved dead. This lecture will look at the humble beginnings of this movement and its tumultuous growth that would embrace the suffrage cause and finally give women a viable platform in which to speak.

Join Doris Adamek, facilitator of DEAR’s Broadway Musicals Part I & II, as she shares the songs and memories of the lost genre of musical theater.

The Strong Museum of Play Around our homes, we throw things away because they’re out of style, sell them at garage sales because the kids have outgrown them, or tuck them into attics or basements because we might need them “someday.”

But history museums need to add the objects of everyday life—from houses, malls, and landfills—to their collections in order to give museum visitors—now and in the future—an accurate picture of life in the United States during the last half of the twentieth century. This lecture takes an informative and entertaining look at how the National Museum of Play deals in a rational and realistic way with all the “stuff” that’s too young to be an antique.

A New Way of Seeing: History of Photography & Modern Art Photography has always been more than just images caught on paper. It has revolutionized the very way we perceive our aesthetic world. We take for granted the obvious simplicity of duplicating the world around us with effortless ease, but the origins of photography was a complicated, scientifically detailed process, and photographers fought and advocated for their work to be recognized as a fine art form. The early photographers were inspired by the great painters of the day and in turn the painters became inspired and used photography to create a new artistic vision. Community Center Meeting rooms and kitchen area are available to Penfield community non-profit groups and organizations on a permit, space available basis. Hours: Mon - Thurs, 8:00 am - 10:00 pm; Fri, 8:00 am - 6:00 pm; Sat, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm; and Sun, 2:00 - 5:00 pm. Warning: Vehicle parking violations at the NYS Police facilities near the Justice Courts at the Community Center will be ticketed and towed.
