Letters to Santa

Penfield Recreation has again made direct communication with Santa’s Workshop, North Pole, USA! Beginning in November, Penfield children will be able to send letters to Santa Claus in care of Penfield Recreation. We will make sure Santa reads your letter and returns a personal reply before Christmas. All letters must be postmarked no later than December 11. This gives Santa proper time to check your Christmas list. (Be sure to include your return address.) If there are any questions feel free to contact Penfield Recreation at 340-8655. Director’s Message

The fall is a great time in Penfield. After a long summer, in which the Recreation Department offered over 370 programs, we are all looking forward to the fall session! The summer was one of the busiest we have had in a long time, from the July 4th celebration, to the summer music series at Penfield Amphitheater & Kiwanis Stage, to the countless summer camp programs, there was something for everyone! I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank everyone who has volunteered or participated in one of our programs or events this past summer.

Since I started as director just over 2 years ago, I have been amazed at the community spirit this town displays on a daily basis! Community spirit is deeply ingrained in Penfield. This past June Penfield lost a true community leader in Terry Rothfuss. Terry was the essence of community spirit. His commitment to the town of Penfield was second to none, and his interest and sincere attitude towards everyone he came in contact with was infectious.

I had the pleasure of working with Terry on several special events and I never once heard him say “no”, or that he was not able to help.

Supervisor’s Message - Tony LaFountain, Penfield Town Supervisor Once again, I am amazed at the quantity and diversity of programs our Recreation staff has put together for our community.

The team, led by Director Chris Bilow, is constantly looking for new and different programs to add to our extensive offerings to meet the needs and interests of Penfield youth, seniors, families, individuals, and groups. We offer more programs today than ever before, and program attendance is at record highs! If you have an idea for a new program we would love to hear from you. Please share your thoughts with any member of the PenRec staff and we will take a look to see if there is a fit.

It has been a busy construction season thus far, and I want to thank all of you for your patience with road construction and other projects that maintain and improve our community. Baird Road was completely rebuilt; it’s the most significant work on that roadway in more than 50 years. Additionally, in conjunction with Monroe County, we repaved Jackson Road from Atlantic Avenue to Plank Road, and repaved a portion of Plank Road. Drainage improvements have been a top priority of this town board to help reduce the amount of flooding residents experience during major storm events. Our Sewer Department is cleaning approximately 10,000 feet of sanitary sewer mains on a monthly basis. The “oil and stone” road maintenance program is underway with about 14 miles of treated roads scheduled for 2014. Correspondence with details on the program and contacts for questions and issues was mailed to residents of affected streets. Fi-

nally, our Parks crew completed the new landscaping, sitting area, and walkways at the Penfield Community Center for the enjoyment of visitors to the Penfield Library and PenRec. The 2015 budget process is well underway.

We continue to be challenged with many of the same rising costs year-on-year… health care, dental, state pension costs, workers compensation insurance, social security, Medicare, and more. While we work to manage costs in all aspects of the operations and to look for ways to reduce spending, uncontrolled rising costs make the budget process very difficult. With our current 70% benefit rate, a worker making $20.00/hour receives the equivalent of $14.00/hour of benefits. ($20.00 X 1.70 = $34.00/hour). Future workforces must have a balance of regular full time, seasonal, and contract workers to better manage costs. I will present the Tentative Budget to the town board on September 3. There will be a public hearing on the Preliminary Budget on October 1, and the Final Budget will be adopted on October 15.

I am convinced that the best communities maintain solid partnerships with many groups and organizations. In Penfield we enjoy great partnerships with the Penfield and Webster School Districts, business organizations, service organizations, and many members of the faith community.

No one entity can do it alone; it takes the resources of all groups to make the most successful towns true communities. I want to recognize and thank all organizations for their involvement and making Penfield one of the best communities in Monroe County.

The town’s Energy & Environmental Advisory Committee (EEAC) continues to be an active advocate for looking at ways to

reduce energy costs and to push the envelope for more sustainable practices with solar initiatives, education, recycling, and more. As costs rise each year, we need to explore more alternative energy sources for savings. We need to do this smartly and with both eyes open, but we need to be working on it now. As we continue researching different ideas and programs, we will keep you posted on our progress.

The Penfield Library continues to grow and expand program offerings. Librarian Bernadette Brinkman and her staff have established one of the best websites in the library system. Log on to www.penfieldlibrary.org to review your account, schedule a program, inquire about downloadable books, review databases, access links and so much more. The library is yet another great asset in our community, please take advantage of all their offerings.

In closing, I would like to recognize all my partners in government, for without them we would not be able to accomplish as much as we do throughout the year. I thank the Penfield Town Board for their leadership, department heads for their direction, all of our employees for their “can do” attitude, and the countless number of volunteers serving on boards and committees who give so much of their time to make Penfield a great place to live and raise a family. The community appreciates each and every one of you!

All persons/groups wishing to reserve use of park shelters and/or ball fields must obtain a permit. All park permits are processed through the Penfield Recreation Department. You must be 21 years or older, and come to the recreation office in person to sign a permit and pay related fees, or go on-line at www.penfieldrec.org. The guided hike at this Monroe County park will be primarily through the heavily wooded area along Irondequoit Creek. It will traverse the slopes and ravines as well as some of the creek banks. Away from the creek you will see elements of the Old Rifle Range, the location of the clubhouse, the restored gazebo and the shooting range pits. This diversified hike will also have overlooks of Irondequoit Creek, wetlands, and meadows. You will stop at the narrows and observe and learn about the low-flow barrier. You may also see the autumn colors creeping into the woods.

This guided hike will tour the paths and boardwalks of the Nature Conservancy’s Thousand Acre Swamp. A variety of habitats including woods, meadows and a pond will be covered. Adult Swim Lessons It’s never too late to learn how to swim.

Always wanted to SCUBA dive? Here’s your chance at Penfield’s High School pool. Learning to SCUBA dive requires both knowledge development and dive skills. The PADI Open Water Diver Course is acknowledged around the world. In addition to pool and classroom time, you will perform open water dives over two days with Rochester’s Pisces School of Dive, Inc. experts; the dive boat is located on Canandaigua Lake. This certification level will allow you to purchase air stateside and on vacation abroad, as well as dive with a buddy to a depth of 60 feet after training.

Class size is limited. A health questionnaire form is required. Registration fee includes classroom sessions, books, pool sessions and open water dives. Wetsuits, regulators, tanks and buoyancy control vests are included but the students will have to bring or purchase a mask, fins, snorkel, boots and a mouthpiece.

The correct equipment is available for purchase from Pisces School of Dive, and they can guarantee the fit! The open water dives may also require a hood and gloves, depending on lake water temperature. The dive shop also offers equipment, rentals, advanced training and excursions. Class registration and certification fee $545.00.

Come and enjoy this time in the water with your little one. Learn how to be safe in and around the water with your child.

Classes include supervised water activities such as getting into the pool the safe way, underwater exploration readiness, back floats, arm movements, rolling over and much, much more. Instructors are lifeguard, first aid and CPR certified.

This course involves the use of one-meter springboards. Instruction is individualized so that each student may progress at his or her own rate. The diver will be encouraged to go as far as he/she desires at each level.

Parent observation is encouraged.

Beginner - A beginner diver is a swimmer who can do a standing dive off the side of the pool. This diver is looking to dive off the board comfortably. Instruction will include: front dive, back dive, inward dive, reverse dive, and twister dive if the diver desires.

Intermediate - An intermediate diver is a swimmer that can complete the front and back dive comfortably from the board. A Harvest of Healthy Fun Red Cross Babysitting at the Children’s Garden

This course is designed to provide youth (ages 11-15), who are planning to babysit, with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly give care for children and infants. This training will help participants to develop leadership skills; learn how to develop a babysitting business; keep themselves and others safe, and help children behave. Through handson practice, the successful candidate will receive certification as an American Red Cross babysitter as well as certification in American Red Cross First Aid. Students are required to bring a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the class. Brown bag lunches are encouraged. Spark your child’s agricultural and ecological intelligence. Spend three Friday afternoons harvesting from and caring for the Penfield Children’s Garden located at the Penfield Community Victory Garden. The children will sample fresh, organic veggies grown this season in the children’s garden. They will learn about harvest practices in backyard gardens and on the farm. Together we will carve a pumpkin, listen to fall stories and plant some winter crops. Note: there are no bathroom facilities at the garden. Bring garden gloves if you wish and water to drink.

Program will be overseen by a coordinator and facilitated/supervised by volunteer parents. Micro soccer (small-sided play on scaled down field areas) will be the format used to maximize each player’s involvement in play and opportunity for “ball touch.”

Games introduced are designed to be fun, challenging, and skill building, and will help to build the child’s confidence with a soccer ball without them even realizing it’s happening. Registration is limited and will be accepted maintaining a volunteer ratio of at least 1:8 (adult to child). Volunteers given registration priority (on a day-by-day basis) and are asked to indicate willingness to help on the registration form. Volunteers will be sent a packet with lesson plans and all pertinent program operational information.

Sporty Sprouts is a preschool tri-sports program. During these classes, your child will be introduced to soccer, tennis and basketball in a fun, fast-paced setting.

Our goal is to spark your child’s curiosity for sports and exercise by teaching the basic skills with age-adapted equipment and games. Come have fun! Please wear sneakers.

This program will include basic tumbling and exercise. It is designed to enhance motor skills, confidence and coordination.

Penfield’s Historic Ghost Walk A new Ghost Walk at Oakwood Cemetery has been created to bring some eerie historic fun to the season. This year’s theme will explore the history of Spiritualism in Rochester. Some of Penfield’s past residents will share their experiences of what was a new religious movement that became extremely popular after the Civil War. Walks begin at 6:00 PM for those of the living who do not like the dark, and continue until 8:00 PM. It is advisable to purchase tickets in advance to ensure participation. Tuesdays - Games for the Brain / Lunch (WE HAVE LUNCH AVAILABLE THIS DAY FOR ONLY $4)

The Tuesday Game Day has grown organically with folks just stopping by to see what was going on in the community room every Tuesday around 9:30 AM. People begin to drift in, grabbing a cup of coffee and then heading to a game table. What’s going on is a variety of spirited games that are taking root from table to table. Some folks play cards, some play dominoes, quite a few have taken to scrabble and before you know it we have a room full of card playing, domino counting, word creating fun! Stop by and join a table or start a new game on your own. There is always complimentary coffee, tea and hot chocolate, and if you stay long enough (most do) a homemade sit down lunch is served at noon for only $4. Registration is not required but you must purchase lunch tickets at least 24 hrs in advance at the recreation office.

Sat, September 27 11:00 AM Penfield Recreation and the Penfield History Room have put together this special Road Rally!

What’s a Road Rally??

It’s a scavenger hunt by car where teams compete against each other finding clues and solving riddles to lead them from location to location and along the way stop to enjoy a roadside picnic, one of the most favorable pastimes of the last century. Rally around Penfield as you explore some of the town’s past. Enjoy a fall ride around the countryside as you solve, search, and find all the secret locations on the rally route. A delicious box lunch will be presented at one of the stops for you to take with you so you can picnic at your leisure. Starting location is the Penfield Community Center. Teams will leave with direction packs promptly at 11:15 AM. Teams will not be timed but will be awarded points for each completed task in the allotted time frame.

Team entry fee: $30 per team (2-3 players, must be in the same car).

Includes lunch and morning refreshments.

Many important American religious movements and denominations were founded or vitally linked to Western New York. This presentation will discuss some of the fascinating historical figures and events that took place in Western New York that went on to influence the religious practices of our entire nation and beyond.

It was formed by 141 distinguished Americans to support President Woodrow Wilson’s efforts to achieve a just peace. The Association was reconstituted in 1923 as the Foreign Policy Association with a commitment to the careful study of all sides of international questions affecting the U.S. John Foster Dulles and Eleanor Roosevelt were among the incorporators. Free Thursday Lecture Series

History of Dreaming

It has been estimated that the average person spends 30% of their lives dreaming.

There are many conflicting theories on why we dream. This fun presentation looks at modern, as well as ancient beliefs on the nature of dreaming. We will travel back to ancient Mesopotamia and to the far reaches of China to examine different ideas about a phenomena that still puzzles scientists to this day.

The Water Cure in Western New York During the latter part of the 19th century, a revolutionary medical treatment was sweeping the U.S. Called “water cures” these medical therapies combined elements of what we now think of as holistic health practices and upscale health spas. When we think of mineral springs and health spas, many of us think immediately of places like Saratoga Springs, White Sulphur Spring at the Greenbrier and the great spas of Europe. But how many of us think of Cuba NY, Dansville, Watkins Glen and Wyoming NY? Yet each of these towns had a flourishing water cure and those early establishments had a significant and, in some cases, lasting impact on those towns.

This presentation will discuss the water cures; the reasons for their popularity and how western NY’s leadership in the fight for equality for women and strong involvement in the various forms of religious revivalism that was sweeping across the area, impacted the growth of the water cures.

Doris Garland Adamek will use the book “Tomorrow Never Comes” as well as the written account of her father and survivor John Garland as she shares, photos, her father’s first hand experience and rescue form the North Atlantic Ocean.

Plants of the Civil War We will explore some of the many nonmedicinal uses of plants during the Civil War. From food and beverage, entertaining, footwear and fashion, Americans turned to the abundance of the natural world to see them through the shortages of war.

Cyber Security 101 In this 1-hour class we’ll talk about the subject of cyber security in general and how it relates to things like identity theft.

Blood Drive

Penfield Community Victory Garden is a space for the Penfield community to do organic gardening. The garden is run completely by volunteers and donations. It is located on 3 acres of Town-owned land at 1747 Five Mile Line Rd.

The Red Cross of Greater Rochester will hold a Blood Drive on August 22 at Penfield Community Center from 1:00 - 6:00 PM. To schedule an appointment to donate, or for more information, please call 1-800RED-CROSS.

October 4, 2014 10:00 am - 2:00 PM Penfield Community Center 1985 Baird Rd. Used bicycles will be collected by Penfield Rotary and donated to R Community Bikes, Inc., a Rochesterbased organization that repairs and distributes bicycles free of charge to Rochester’s needy children and adults. Its mission is to meet the basic transportation needs of those in the community who depend on bikes to get to work, school, rehabilitation programs and training sessions, as well as for recreation. Community Wellness Chili Judging Entry Form and Guidelines There will be two separate categories for judging “People’s Choice” and the “Judged” categories Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in both categories. $100 cash prize for 1st place “Judged”

Rules

Chili may be made with beans and/or meatless. Chili entries must display list of main ingredients at tasting table. Chili must be served from food grade equipment. Transported chili must be at least 41 degrees or colder, or 140 degrees or warmer. Served chili must maintain a minimum of 140 degrees. All entries must provide a minimum of four gallons of chili for the “Peoples’ Choice” judging. Judged chili will be collected and submitted to judges at 12:45 pm. People’s Choice judging will start at 1:00 pm.

Performances: Saturdays, November 1*, 8, & 15 at 8:00 PM Fridays, November 7 & 14 at 8:00 PM Special Matinee: Sunday, November 2 at 2:00 PM *OPENING NIGHT performance (Nov 1) - dessert & coffee reception with special guests at 7:00 PM.

All performances will be held at Penfield Community Center, 1985 Baird Rd., Penfield.
