OUR MISSION: Pendragon Theatre is an ensemble of artists, based in the Adirondacks, dedicated to preserving the vitality and enhancing the quality of professional theatre through year-round performance and educational programs. We perform across an extensive region and collaborate on a number of levels with a variety of artistic, historic and civic organizations.

once upon a time . . . In the spring of 1981, Pendragon, as yet unnamed, was coalescing its second production — Under Milkwood by Dylan Thomas. The fledgling group began to think that a name, an identity, would be good. A host of names was offered up. One person, drawn to the idea of the British Isles because of the then current production, fell upon Pendragon. Why? Uther Pendragon was the father of Arthur, “King of England.” Pendragon means chief leader of the British tribes. While not in England, we still hope to provide the lead or impetus towards excellence in theatre arts.

Welcome to Pendragon Theatre! We are delighted you have joined us. It is our hope that the summer repertory season provides you with diverse and engaging theatre experiences. We urge you to see all the plays and join us, if you can, in the other seasons too! Our esteemed founders, Susan Neal and Bob Pettee, have announced that they will retire next spring. We have secured a terrific team to succeed them – a vibrant combination of the past and future.

• Dr. Karen Kirkham will be our new Executive/Artistic Director.

Karen, who is the Chair of the Drama and Dance Dept. at

Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, has directed many Pendragon

productions over the past fifteen years.

• David Zwierankin steps up from Technical Director to Managing

Director. David brings broad technical theatre and computer

skills plus a degree in theater education with experience in the

field. Both Karen and David have deep family ties to the

Adirondacks. Our new leadership team will ensure Pendragon remains true to its

mission and tradition: presenting professional, engaging, inspiring theater. A fundraising drive is underway to ensure a healthy transition and a stable future. You may not realize that ticket sales cover less than half of our operating budget – the balance comes from generous patrons and donors like you. We ask you to join your neighbors in supporting Pendragon, the Adirondack region’s only year-round professional theater. We all thank Susan and Bob for bringing high-quality, thought-provoking theater to our region for the past 32 years. We wish them a welldeserved, long, and happy retirement. Now, on with the show!

A Note from the current Artistic Director

A Note from the incoming Executive/Artistic Director

When Bob and I moved to Saranac Lake, we never imagined 32 years! We were building a theatre. . . one day at a time.

Why Pendragon? I’ve often been asked why I’ve continued to return to direct at Pendragon every summer for more than fifteen years. The answer has always been “Bob and Susan”.

The journey for us has been profound, demanding and exhilarating. We have not commitment to We tell old some serious, challenging.

waivered from our diverse, vital theatre. and new stories, some funny, some

Our great respect for the community and region continues. We could not have survived without the extraordinary commitment and generosity of countless people. As always, we applaud and extend heartfelt thanks to the many theatre artists, past and present, whose incredible passion, talents and unerring faith have partnered with us along the way. The incoming directors, Karen and David, have a deep and strong commitment to Pendragon. Their energy, vision and collective talents will guide the theatre forward with your support. With deep gratitude to all,

Susan Neal Artistic Director

The question now is what does that mean and what is Pendragon without them. Bob and Susan are artists who lack ego, which is an almost impossible combination to find. They are willing to take risks by producing work they believe in and thereby creating an environment where the play rather than the individual agenda is primary. Magnets for attracting like-minded collaborators, they foster a working environment where the process is as important as the product. This attitude has resulted in some of the best theater I’ve had the privilege to be involved with. Now I am entrusted to continue the mission of the theater. I am dedicated to preserving and building upon their vision. Why Pendragon? The answer will be because Pendragon stands for theatrical excellence, egoless collaboration and service to the greater community. That said, the answer in my heart will always be “Bob and Susan.”

Who’s Who - The Company Bonnie B. Brewer (PSM/Sound Engineer) has been a Pendragon company member since 1990. In addition to directing, designing, making props, stage managing and graphic designing for Pendragon she works with thelocal high schools and other theatre groups in the region to help them realize their artistic visions. She recieved her BFA in Theatre Production/Management from Auburn University in 1988. Matthew DuBrey (Oates) is ecstatic to be back at Pendragon. A recent grad of SUNY Potsdam, he hopes to keep delving into the world of Theater and find where his next niche is. Past performances at Pendragon were Sgt. Trotter in The Mousetrap, and Denny in A Steady Rain (a remounted senior project with the efforts of many SUNY Potsdam folk) He has had the blessing of being involved with many other performances such as Pontius/Foot Soldier in Sarah Ruhl’s Passion Play, an array of characters in On The Town, and many others. He hopes to continue on his path as a prospective performer. He has the World to thank. Matthew C. Eick (Evans) has been seen on the Pendragon stage as Bob Cratchit in A Christmas Carol, Jonas Fogg & Ensemble in last year’s production of Sweeney Todd, and as the title character in last winter’s The Littlest Angel. Other credits at Pendragon include stage managing Completely Hollywood and Stuart Little and running sound for Dracula. He wishes to thank the cast and crew of Terra Nova for all the laughs during and after rehearsals and Bob for his brilliance, guidence and encouragement throughout. To Katie, thank you again for letting me go play even though I’m 31. And to this audience, try to stay warm!

Jordan Hornstein (Bowers) is proud to be appearing in his seventh winter production with Pendragon. Past winter performances have included To Kill a Mockingbird (Judge Taylor and Mr. Cunningham) Dracula (Dr. Seward), Moby Dick – Rehearsed (Starbuck), The Merchant of Venice (Shylock), Twelve Angry Men (Juror #8), and Antigone (Chorus/Narrator) . He lives in Long Lake with his wife, Jacqueline, and their two exceedingly intelligent cats, Becky and Willie. Tim Jock (Stage Manager) After twenty years, Tim still enjoys helping out at Pendragon Theatre. Christopher H. Leifheit (Amundsen) has never eaten a dog (that he knows of ) but he has been very cold more often than he cares to remember. He is pleased to once more sail off in search of adventure with the Pendragon Corps of Discovery and offers heartfelt thanks to a great Director, cast and crew! Karen Lordi-Kirkham (Incoming Executive Artistic Director) has been directing for Pendragon for over fifteen years and is honored to be taking over as Executive artistic director starting in 2013. Favorite Pendragon projects include last summer’s Sweeney Todd, the world premiere of Andre Gregory’s Bone Songs and Orson Welles’ Moby Dick Rehearsed. Lordi-Kirkham is the current Chair of the Theatre and Dance department at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA and received both her MFA and DFA from the Yale School of Drama. Thank you Bob and Susan for your trust. ~ Continued on pg 14

Megan MacDonald (Kathleen) is a graduate of the New York Conservatory of Dramatic Arts in New York City. While finishing her degree at SUNY Potsdam, she had the opportunity to study Theatre and Film abroad at the University of Glasgow in Glasgow, Scotland. She is honored to work with Pendragon Theatre on their performance of Terra Nova. She is grateful for the opportunity to work with such talented, humorous, and charming people! Enjoy the show! Christopher McGovern (Captain Robert Falcon Scott) has been around for awhile;previous roles include Ahab, in Moby Dick Rehearsed; Prof. Van Helsing, in Dracula; Malvolio in Twelfth Night, & the Queen of Hearts in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, among others. Susan Neal (Artistic Director) Co-founder and Artistic Director of Pendragon. As this is my last summer season, my heartfelt thanks to all for 32 extraordinary years. Brandon Patterson (Wilson) is happily along for the ride on another Pendragon voyage. Recent adventures have seen him: on the deck of the Pequod in Moby Dick--Rehearsed; flirting with danger (and tarts) in And a Nightingale Sang; smoothly turning the meatgrinder in Sweeney Todd; and stealing hearts (well, blood) in Dracula. Brandon recently found his inner-tenor playing Jamie in this summer’s 6-month run of The Last 5 Years. Eternal gratitude to friends, family, casts, crews, Kate, Bob, and Susan. Robert W. Pettee (Director and Managing Director) is co-founder of Pendragon with wife Susan Neal. He has played many roles, both on 14

stage. backstage, in the back office, in crisis management, maintanence, fundraising, and… a few others. Pendragon has survived and flourished because hundreds, and really thousands of people have put their ego aside and thought of Pendragon as “we” Hundreds more have supported with contribution, in kind services and in many other ways. Pendragon is a community. Thanks to you - and for those who will come - for helping to make the community flourish and grow. It has been a good, albeit at times, bumpy ride! Thank you, Atticus, The Puppetmaster, Dodge, Lady Enid et al, Renfield, Scrooge, Lee, Roy, ... and whoever else may be hiding in the recesses. Kent Streed (Resident Set/Costume Designer, Box Office Manager, Gepetto - Pinocchio) has been a year round company member at Pendragon Theatre for many years and looks forward to carrying on that work for many more. Enjoy the shows, enjoy the summer and wish the singularly “old school” Mr Streed well as he enters the new computerized era at the box office. David B. Zwierankin (Lighting Design and Technical Director) is happy to be beginning his 2nd season with Pendragon. He attended SUNY Potsdam, where he studied Theatre and Theatre Education. Previous Pendragon productions include Lighting Designs for Pinocchio, To Kill a Mockingbird and Bus Stop, as well as Stage Manager for The Mystery of Irma Vep.

v Notes from the Director In the beginning of the acting edition of Terra Nova Ted Tally writes of the characters: “In the winter of 1911-1912, five Englishmen and five Norwegians raced each other to the bottom of the earth. Only the five Norwegians returned. This is the story of the Englishmen.” What a fantastic premise for a play – to tell the story of those who can’t speak. Well, they spoke through the medium of Robert Falcon Scott’s journals but so much detail for a playwright to fill in with his imagination! Terra Nova is a play that works on many levels. It is first and foremost an unbelievable tale of human perseverance in the face of incredible odds. It is a picture of a bygone time, a time when nationalism and cultural differences were strong; where the heroic was an ideal very different from today; where the world was on the edge of a savage war. Yet as historically bound as the subject matter is, the ideas and issues are immensely universal. Because of that universality, I have decided to do something a bit different from the original production. We have not attempted to tie the play to the actual journey. The original production used many of the pictures taken on the trip which was well chronicled by photographer Herbert Ponting. Many of Tally’s lines are taken directly from the Scott journal but it is the author’s craft that has filled in all the dialogue between and masterfully so! On another note, the music we chose for pre-show/intermission/post show is taken ~ continued pg 36 ~ 31

from Ralph Vaughn Williams Symphonie Antarctica. Williams was asked to write music for a film about the Scott adventure. When he began to research the journey he decided the tale was too universal for episodic pieces to accompany the scenes of a film. So he decided to create a whole Symphony to chronicle and honor the story. Terra Nova is considered by many to be a “tragedy” but not just because disaster befalls a group of explorers. The heroic leader is in many ways defeated by his own virtue and commitment to the English ideals of hardihood, endurance and courage. We hope you find the production interesting and thought provoking. This choice of play represents Pendragon’s continuing commitment to produce a wide variety of theatrical experiences. You will find a “Study Guide” in the lobby. We create one every year for the Fall touring show because we take it to many school audiences from now until February/March. The study guide has some history, notes about the author and the play; some discussion of themes and with questions for discussion. You may find it interesting and if you choose to take a copy we hope you will return it in a few days after you have had a chance to review. “Why are there so many doors... was the house designed by a lunatic? “ ~ What The Butler Saw “ R e a l l o v e i s n’ t a m b i v a l e n t . ” ~ Angels in America “ E v e r y y o u n g m a n’s s h o u l d e r s need an encouraging squeeze now and then.” ~ Orphans 36

The Case for Endowment

Pendragon has established itself as a vibrant regional resource, unique in its program and service to the region. The magic of Saranac Lake and the immediate environs have been the cradle and spring board for that regional reach. Yet Pendragon’s measure of success in the past is no indicator that such will always be the case. Theatres are a very special breed of not-for-profit. Theatres by their very nature must take risks. They are subject to failure often based on elements as diverse as public whims and fads, economic weaknesses, even suspicion about the value of theatre itself. Many of these factors are amplified in a rural environment. Pendragon seeks to build its endowment in order to ensure its capacity to take risks and provide services to a region where there is so little consistent theatre. It seeks to build its endowment so that educational services can continue to grow. They will create new audiences who continue to value theatre as a cultural necessity; who see it as more than a luxury item reserved for an elite group. Please contact the theatre if you would like to explore the many ways you can help the endowment grow. Thank you!

Some thoughts from the Managing Director I don’t usually write a letter or comment for the year round program. Today, however, I felt compelled. I had an interesting conversation with a patron in the lobby. The Patron said: “I heard Pendragon was sold.” I corrected her. Pendragon has not been “sold.” I tried to unravel the rumor. We announced that a transition was underway. We announced that current directors Bob Pettee and Susan Neal would be moving on. We announced that new leadership was in place – we did a lot of things, but we did not report that the Theatre was sold! Pendragon is changing but is still very much” on mission”. Change is a good thing. Pendragon is a not for profit corporation transitioning from a founder driven phase to a Board driven phase. More importantly, Pendragon is you-- the audience member, the schoolteacher, the student, an organization that needs a gift to auction, the school that needs a costume to rent. Pendragon is all of this and more. We are open for business for many years to come! “Professional Organizer Enters Stage Right”
