A warm welcome to parents, students and followers of the many achievements of Pendle Vale College as celebrated in this latest exciting edition of our regular, popular and inspiring magazine ‘The Achiever’.

Can I extend a very warm welcome to this latest edition of our popular and highly motivating College magazine ‘The Achiever’ which provides a snapshot in time of the many exciting, inspiring and incredible things that are going on in our increasingly successful College. We had what was, without question, the best year in the history of Pendle Vale College in the academic year 2016/17: • Celebrating our best ever GCSE results • Attaining a Progress 8 measure of +0.33 (Putting us top in Pendle and 8th out of all the schools in Lancashire in terms of the value we add to the education of our students)

• Receiving official recognition as being in the top 20% of schools nationally for student progress in the 2016 end of KS4 exams • Gaining recognition by the SSAT’s Framework for Exceptional Education with accreditation for transforming practice in teaching strategies and professional learning.

All in all a lot to feel incredibly proud about. It cannot get much better than this can it?

Well it can! This year’s GCSE data shows that we achieved even better results than in any other year, surpassing the previous year’s ‘best ever’ status. We do not know our Progress 8 measure at the time of going to press but we are extremely confident that our relative performance was strong and that we will be strongly positive again.

This is why we can confidently boast that Pendle Vale College is a very good school. I am hoping that through reading the wide variety of activities, comments from students and the plethora of achievements in The Achiever that you will begin to see that my boast can be backed up.

We are now working earnestly in all aspects of what we do in Pendle Vale College to become an Outstanding school as only the best will do for us.

WHAT MAKES

EXCELLENCE? In 2016 our final results were amongst the best in Lancashire and we received national recognition from the SSAT, placing us amongst the best 20% of schools nationally with a progress 8 score of 0.33.

This meant that our students performed 1/3 of a grade better than students in the ’average school’.

This year we have had another bumper set of results and we are pretty sure that we have gone one step further.

How do we know this?

We are particularly proud of our results this year as they show stability and once again More students than ever before achieved steady improvement at a time of national 5 good GCSE results including English uncertainty in education. The new 9-1 grade and Maths. (53%) qualifications in English and Maths delivered particularly pleasing results and compared to 1000 other secondary schools in the Pixl Our English and Maths results are both above group, we appear to have performed well the National Average score for the first time above the norm. ever. Over 70% of English students achieved a grade a grade 4 or higher.

Our Science results have improved and many students left us having successfully studied a humanities subject and a language.

In several subject areas, boys have performed particularly well and in some they have out-performed the girls for the first time in recent years.

99.5% of students achieved at least one qualification.

Matthew Livesey and Safina Minhas both achieved grade 9s in English and Maths putting them amongst the elite nationally.

We now await the government to publish the Progress 8 scores to see just how well we have officially done.

Well done to the students from the class of 2017 and good luck on your next steps in education.

Visit to Oxford University As part of our ongoing collaborative work with the other schools in Pendle to promote the importance of education a small group of students from our “Pendle Elite Programme” went on an overnight stay to Oxford. They had the opportunity to look around some of the colleges there and explore. An integral part of the visit was the final stage of a project they had been working in for “Pendle Elite”. They each had to give a presentation on a topic they were passionate about to staff from the university. The students met Oxford undergraduates and staff from the university and were able to ask questions about what it would be like to study at Oxford and what additional opportunities going to University might offer them in the future.

During our trip to Oxford we were to deliver a presentation in front of students and teachers from different schools on our chosen topic, which we had been researching for the past few months.

Throughout the 2 day visit we were given multiple tours around Oxford and we were also able to speak to some University students about their experience of studying at Oxford. The trip was not only a great opportunity to grow our confidence with speaking in front of others but it also gave us a flavour of university life.

UCLAN visit

Though our ongoing links with different universities, several Year 10 students have been involved in University visits across the country. A small group of students were selected to get a feel for a variety of courses at Preston UCLAN including: Engineering, Health, Law, Creative and Digital Arts. During these sessions, our students used 3D printers, programmed games and created sensor devices out of fruit. The students also experienced some of the most recent technologies in

Augmented Reality.

Two of our students also got to the finals in an AGT initiative in conjunction with Manchester University. This was after winning round 1 in Preston. The students spent a day at the university where they had to make and program robots to maneuver around obstacles and courses. The students were then awarded certificates by the Mayor of Manchester.

AR SILVER AW 2017

SILVER AWARD

Completion of the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award is meant to be a real challenge; to get to Silver requires real qualities of resilience, determination and a desire to succeed. However, a group of last year’s year 11 students managed to achieve just that. The Silver award really tests commitment and resolve, through participants being required to complete 6 months of volunteering in their own time and also to learn a new skill. The physical section involves sticking at an activity, every week, throughout the cold winter months. It is for a good reason that not many teenagers complete this!

Our expeditions were in April and July of this year - a practice to the Lake District and an assessment in the Yorkshire Dales. This tested our students’ tenacity and resilience, with them needing to carry all equipment and camp for 2 nights in some challenging conditions.

On the practice, they completed part of their journey by canoe, paddling the length of Derwent water to reach the foot of Skiddaw in Keswick. As always, they were well supported by staff but the aim of this award is to develop self-reliance and although the staff were always close at hand, they could not always be seen, meaning that students had to make their own decisions. This really helps to set them up for their futures.

2017 The trip began with a gruelling 18 hour coach trip but it turned out to be worth it! We arrived in Strasbourg and visited the beautiful cathedral. We then had time to visit a few shops before going to a different section of Strasbourg where we had lunch. We next went on a boat tour on the river which educated us in the history of Strasbourg, the river and the surrounding buildings. At the end of this we visited the European parliament, where we learnt how the EU works and runs. We were told there are 28 countries and 24 languages in the EU. We then got to talk to the British Members of the European Parliament (MEP) who had sponsored us, Jacqueline Foster and Sajjad Karim. We all had lots of questions to ask, particularly their thoughts on Brexit.

In the evening, we had a meal at a French restaurant, I had cod with some sort of delicious sauce and rice which was great! We then went back to the hotel. Our rooms were brilliant and the breakfast the following morning was even better!

The following day we visited Freiburg in the Black Forest which was such a beautiful town! In the afternoon we visited Lake Titisee which was picturesque, and the sight was even better from the top of the Ferris wheel. Our evening meal was Pizza in the Marco Polo restaurant.

We also went to Disneyland which was spectacular especially the light show at night! I’d definitely recommend this trip to anyone wanting to go!

The European Union trip was an amazing experience as it was something really different and had lots of different elements including visiting the European Parliament and getting the chance to ask MEPs questions, a boat ride and visiting the city of Strasbourg in Alsace on the French German border, visit to Freiburg and Lake Titisee in Germany and Disney Land Paris.

We visited the beautiful town of Freiburg on our second day which had a great atmosphere and we were able to buy food from the outdoor market. The strawberries were “wunderbar”! (wonderful). We needed to speak some French and German and learning the new language was an exciting challenge. We feel it made us more independent and confident.

Our thanks go to the teachers for taking us – Mr Chaudhry, Mrs Jenkinson, Ms Seggie, Mr Hand and Mrs Raszler and special thanks to Mr Chaudhry for organising it all.

Would the poems of William Blake make much sense if we didn’t know anything about the Industrial Revolution?

There has never been a time when the links between History and English have been more important. At the core of much of the new English Language and Literature exams lies History. It was the events of the time that shaped the

literature of the time and to truly understand one then we must take into account the other. With that in mind during the Summer term the whole of year 7 started a new topic entitled, “Admirable Nelson and The Industrial North”. Initially we focussed on the local area and the reasons why the town of Nelson came into being and its links to the cotton trade. To support the learning further the whole of year 7 went on a trip to either The National Coal Mining Museum or the 18th century cotton mill at Quarry Bank.

E R U T A R E T I L G BRINGIN What a day and what a terrific museum, set in the old mines beneath the hills of Wakefield. Each group was assigned a miner to take us on a guided tour. They were fascinating men and had lots of tales to tell. The tour started with a “cosy” journey down the lift shaft, deep into the depths of the mine. We were amazed to find out that in the 18th and 19th Century children as young as 5 or 6 started their working life down the mines.

One of the worst jobs must have been as a trapper.

Sitting in the dark, hour after hour, making sure the trap doors were opened and closed, “trapping” the fresher air in. To avoid being lost in the dark these children were tied to their door with only the rats to keep them company – and steel their packed lunch!

We all felt really sorry for the pit ponies too. In the beginning once down the mines they had to stay there. Imagine that! Never seeing the sunshine again or a cool breeze on their faces. It made us realise just how lucky we were and how things had changed.

Set in beautiful grounds the mill stands tall, an imposing red brick building. In many ways back in the 18 and 19th Century it was still just as impressive, but not so much for its looks, Lancashire was dotted with many mills feeding the needs of the industrial Revolution, but instead for its forward thinking approach to the workers. This was a mill you wanted to work in – a mill you would want your child to work in for it was far better than many of the other forms of employment available at the time. The mill owners believed in giving their workers an education and feeding them so they stayed healthy and they could work harder and for longer.

We had a tour of the mill and saw the huge looms. They were truly amazing – and very loud. We found out about the terrible accidents that occurred. One poor boy was crushed to death in the loom his head was “completely smashed” and death was , “instantaneous”. The brutality of the time was made vividly clear to us.

We found out how the children lived in the Apprentice house and walked to the mill in the dark, holding their breakfast in their hands – a dollop of thick porridge. It doesn’t sound great but compared to other places it was heaven.

You soon learned not to complain too…a headache meant you had to hold a hot poultice on your head until it blistered. That cured the pain – of the headache at least !

PENDLE Year 9’s end of year trip was to climb Pendle Hill, this was to challenge and inspire them and help them work as part of a team. This was instead of the usual theme park visits as we felt that the students would get more from this activity and it would inspire them to walk more in the future and also encourage them to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh expeditions throughout years 10 and 11.

The students were put into groups, given maps and directions and had to navigate themselves up and over Pendle Hill with the help of staff. All the groups successfully navigated the hill and completed the walk in good time. The students had a really good day and enjoyed completing the challenge.

NAVIGATING PENDLE HILL Year 9’s end of year trip was to climb Pendle Hill. This was a challenge to inspire them, help build resilience and get them working as part of a team. We feel that this helps build character in preparation for the rigours of GCSE as stamina and resourcefulness are needed to get all the way round but everyone feels a sense of accomplishment at the end. The walk should inspire them to walk more in the future and also encourage them to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh expeditions throughout years 10 and 11.

Pushing your boundaries What have a snake, a kookaburra, a possum, a skunk, a lizard, a rabbit, a 10 year old hedgehog and a puppy got in common? If you were in Miss Riazat’s year ten group in the summer you will know the answer as all of those animals paid a visit to the class. The idea behind the lesson was pushing your boundaries and trying new things, we are sometimes not comfortable with some types of animals we may not be familiar with or have not seen before, such as the Kookaburra or the snake. However, the longer we are exposed to the animals, we become more comfortable with them and may overcome our fear or anxiety about them.

It is the same with careers and job interviews. The more we expose ourselves to challenges in our life, the more accepting we become of them. With thanks to Gregg Stevenson from Nelson & Colne College and Steve Mannon from Home Safari, Ormskirk.

Ever wanted to cast a spell, ride a broomstick or face Voldemort? A group of 40 Year 9 students did as they visited the Harry Potter Warner Bros Studio Tour in July and were extremely excited to go, as were the staff! We arrived in good time and had a picnic in the sun, this included the mandatory selfies of course, whilst waiting to enter at our allocated time.

We eagerly queued and were eventually let into an area for a small talk before entering a cinema area to watch a short film.

This was followed by the unveiling of the Great Hall doors, which were amazing, and led into the actual Great Hall used in the films – fantastic! We all listened as the guide spoke about how the area was used and how CGI was used to create the illusion of the floating candle ceiling.

Throughout the tour, we saw actual props which were used in the films and also models which were computerised in order to bring characters to life, such as Dobby the Elf. This amazed the students and they enjoyed taking pictures whilst viewing them. They even had the chance to pose on a broomstick and take photographs.

The Hogwarts express train was another amazing feature of the tour, which had a photo opportunity close by which the students took part in. Along with the compulsory pose of pushing the trolley through the wall at Platform 9 and ¾!

Overall it was a brilliant day, enjoyed by all, and a memory to remember for years to come! Safa Shafiq from year 10 said “Ever imagined walking through the gates of Hogwarts or seeing the golden snitch with your own eyes? I can, as an amazing ICT trip to Harry Potter Studio led us through the world of Harry Potter. From seeing the Elder wand to walking through the forbidden forest, everything was truly magical.

However, it was the technical side that really caught our imaginations, from seeing how the camera showed a raised broom and green screen technology, it truly was a sight worth seeing.

After Easter last term we set all year 7 a challenge – they had to be ‘perfect’ for 4 whole weeks. Their challenge was not to have more than 4 negative events – easy you might think – ha! – not so They had to be on time to every lesson, complete all their homework, wear their uniform correctly, complete accelerated reader challenges and have good behaviour in and out of lessons. I wanted perfection.

Their reward for this was the opportunity to go to Lightwater Valley at the end of term. 187 students were successful in achieving this and 150 took the opportunity to attend the trip.

The students were in school bright and early for a 7.30 start. We had a fabulous day and the theme park was not too busy with the weather kind to us. The students were so well behaved and it was a pleasure to hear them scream on the rides and see them win prizes and eating candy floss. It was a super ending to a very successful year for our little year 7s.

Next year the challenge will be even harder!

As part of our ongoing mentoring programme at Pendle Vale College we are partnered with Burnley FC who run a project called Premier League Enterprise. This is an initiative, which focuses on year 9 students bringing the classroom into real life business contexts. Within the project, the students work on skills such as team building, budgeting, problem solving, reasoning and decision-making. Pendle Vale has had several successful groups who have undertaken the project, and in March, these students were awarded their certificate from one of Burnley Football Club’s rising first team stars, Daniel Agyei. They also had the opportunity to get ‘selfies’ and quiz Daniel about his career so far. Well done to the students involved, thank you to Burnley FC in the community and good luck for the season Daniel.

in themunity com As part of the holy month of Ramadan, Khalid Mehmood the imam from the Ghausia mosque Nelson invited all staff and their families to join the Muslim community in opening the fast together.

The aim of the evening was to give the non-Muslim community a better insight into Ramadan and to strengthen community cohesion, a number of our non-Muslim staff went one step further in by completing a full day’s fast too. It was a lovely evening enjoyed by all.

Pendle Vale student raises money for Pendle Hospice Alex Dawson, a Year 7 student at Pendle Vale College, has recently undertaken a sponsored walk for Pendleside Hospice as part of his aim to complete the Pendle Vale 50 challenge. The Pendle Vale 50 is a challenge for students complete a list of 50 milestones during their 5 years at Pendle Vale.

One of the tasks on the list is to raise some money for charity and make a paper trail recording of the event.

Alex said that he chose to help the Pendleside Hospice due to their links with Burnley Football Club and after having met and spoken to some of the Hospice fundraisers outside Turf Moor in the past.

One of the many fundraising events the Pendleside Hospice organise is the annual

‘Sponsored Pub Walk’. Alex said he found the walk itself challenging in places and according to google Maps walked 11.25 miles. He said “My parents seemed to enjoy the Pub stops on the route, however I was the only one drinking water with ice!

I really enjoyed the day and did feel tired at the end of the walk though knowing I had managed to raise some money for a good local charity, pleased me.

In total, I raised £120 through sponsorship from having completed the walk.”

As part of the Aspire programme on Tuesday afternoon students have been visiting a local residential home to assist and socialize with senior citizens in our community. Our students have really enjoyed the experience and some are now considering volunteering their time outside of school hours. Well done to all who have taken part.

Vale College said “The Pendle Vale 50 is something we have developed at our College to encourage students to do/ experience something they have not done before and to push them, to go beyond their comfort zone thereby developing their resilience. We are extremely proud of Alex who, off his own initiative has walked a significant distance and raised such a great sum of money for a great cause. He deserves huge recognition and congratulations for such a selfless act”.

Over the past 10 years students at Pendle Vale college have had the opportunity to visit London as part of our commitment to widening the experiences of our young people. Another cohort of Pendle Vale students enjoyed the best of what London has to offer in July on the ever-popular annual visit to see some of our Capital City’s most popular sights. The group experienced the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace before enjoying a picnic in Hyde Park. After lunch we paid our respects to those who had lost their lives in the July 2005 bomb attacks at the Hyde Park memorial.

From there the students scaled the dizzying heights of the Monument to the Great Fire of London (62m tall and 311 steps) before taking a more sedate guided tour cruise down the river Thames. STUDENT COUNCIL In May, our student council enjoyed a visit to London to experience life inside Westminster and to see firsthand how government works. As part of the visit the group braved the heights of the Emirates Airline cable cars which cross the river Thames at Greenwich before making their way to Westminster and parliament by river taxi. There was certainly a unique atmosphere inside Westminster as we arrived days after Theresa May had called a

General election, therefore with campaigning well underway Parliament was without MPs and quite empty feeling. However, the students were able to see the chambers of the Houses of Lords and Commons and gain an excellent understanding of how our democracy works before taking part in a democracy workshop focused on election campaigning. AUTUMNAL TREE

If you take a trip down to our Student Support Centre on Level one you will see the ‘Autumnal Tree’ which was produced in Mosaic Club by our students.

Creating such an impressive piece of art took time, we first created the ceramic leaves and positioned them on the tree. Then many intricate pieces were cut to size to create an autumnal blossom effect. The students were very dedicated and showed real dedication and resilience to see the project through. They have done a fantastic job and I am very proud of them all.
