About Penbode Farm Vets Penbode Farm Vets have been caring for livestock in Devon and Cornwall since 1840. With a dedicated clinical farm team of 20 vets, VetTechs and TB testers based in Stratton, Bradworthy, Camelford and Holsworthy, you are never far away from a Penbode Farm Vet who understands the challenges facing animal owners in the South West.

Over the generations, Penbode has continued to adjust to evolving client needs and advancing veterinary knowledge.

All of our vets work within their own areas of expertise and undertake extensive continuous professional development, ensuring that you get the best possible care for your animals.

Why should you sign up for our Level 3 Apprentice?

Gain real world experience What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship has a minimum duration of 12 months of which 20% has to be ‘off the job’ learning. This apprenticeship course is delivered in the workplace with limited contact time by a college assessor when they visit the apprentice. Therefore additional ‘off the job’ learning is required in the workplace by the employer.

I’m a student - what’s in it for me?

The chance to earn and learn! Not only will you be gaining the necessary applied skills to obtain a full time job in agriculture, you’ll also be learning vital practical training and livestock handling skills which will help you help your employers and their staff.

I’m an employer - what’s in it for me?

You benefit from employing a student who is motivated to learn and apply their knowledge on your farm. Plus the government will pay £1000 to employers if they train a 16-18 year old. (There is a cost if your apprentice is 19 or over.)

Where you will learn.

Not all classrooms have four walls Penbode Farm Vets will be running the new course at sites within an hour of its Holsworthy branch. Not only will we make use of our branch teaching rooms and lambing bays but we are also fortunate to have many clients who are willing to let us use their farms (and livestock) for teaching purposes.

It’s vital to maintain continuity with the ‘on the job’ learning which apprentices enjoy and so we will endeavour to deliver the majority of our livestock lessons on farm with livestock!

Entry requirements and how to apply.

Not just academic.

Getting your hands dirty.

What qualifications do I need to start?

Preferably GCSEs at grade 4 or above to include English and Maths or Level 2 Apprenticeship in Agriculture

How long will it take?

An 18-24 month programme working on a one day per month day release basis

Assessment methods You will be visited in the workplace on a regular basis by an experienced assessor who will work with you on developing your knowledge and understanding and assess your practical skills on farm. Delivery of this apprenticeship will be largely at and with Penbode vets although you will be expected to attend Duchy College occasionally for some assessment and training.
