Penang may just be just a speck in the eyes of the world but it surely did attract many enthusiastic foodies from far away with its mesmerizing gastronomy journeys. In this issue, I will dig even deeper into those untapped areas on both island and mainland where you may even want to equip yourself with your sport gear to burn off some extra calories. A large numbers of the readers did give me some feedback on the distance to a few of my previously selected venues. This article won’t be known as “Off The Beaten Track” for no reason, right? When there’s a will for mouth-watering cuisine with a change of scenery and taste, there’s always a way to go on a delectable tour by whatever mode of transportation needed. After all, you will just need to download the WAZE app on your mobile device and key in the GPS coordinates as provided. Bon Appetit!

388 Chicken Rice @ Green Lane Nowadays, dining out healthily is the popular choice of many. With the presence of 388 Chicken Rice, you can be assured of consuming free range chicken known in Cantonese dialect as Hu Sou Kai (Hu Xu Ji in Chinese/Bearded Chicken), a breed which is totally free from hormone and antibiotic feeds. The set meal will contain a balanced diet of carbs, protein and vegetables with an option for a range of healthy herbal or miso soups. Don’t forget to try out their Signature Sambal Fried Egg. Fans of matcha desserts will be glad that a street style ice cream stall by the name of YumeのMatcha has been serving one of the best Uji Matcha ice creams in Penang without many people knowing its whereabouts. But now that you do, you can start to enjoy the desserts in a variety of flavours either in cone or in parfait forms. Currently, they have 4 flavours ranging from Original Uji Matcha, Premiun Uji Matcha, Black Sesame Uji Matcha and Espresso Uji Matcha. You can also purchase the varieties of ice cream to indulge in the comfort of your home and these will come in tubs of 500ml, 1.5L, 3L and 6L. If you were to ask me which flavour suited me best, I would surely choose the Premiun Uji Matcha as it is silkier and tastier than any of the matcha products I have ever tasted anywhere.

With the hustle and bustle of city life, it will be great if you could find some time and a special place to rejuvenate the body, mind and soul? Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just relax within nature, listening to the soothing melodies of forest life, while sipping a hot cup of tea and consuming some light food? Well, you can and the Tea Spa @ Cherok Tokun Hill, Bukit Mertajam will be the ideal place to do so. The little hut within the vast forest reserve does offer a variety of tea options with calming effects.

On top of that, there will also be some light meals to savour. My personal favourites have always been their Herbal Egg Tea and Teochew-Style Stir Fry Mee Tiao (Longevity Noodles), which is culinary simplicity at its best. Depending on availability, you could also order some steamed sweet potatoes, groundnuts, pumpkin seeds and more. If you are in for more adventure, you could equip yourself well to take an early hike uphill to enjoy the beautiful scenery at the top.

If you are thinking about enjoying some sinful gastronomic indulgences, you would always think about Restoran Shui Yuan Seafood Restaurant (formerly known as Swee Garden) in Nibong Tebal, Penang. Their Signature Crispy Pork Knuckle is the most deliciously prepared pork dish rendition that I’ve ever tasted. This restaurant’s signature offering is a true classic - gelatinous and yet scrumptious in every way. The well marinated meat was so tender and juicy while the skin was so fragrant and crispy that the whole dish would be simply too tempting for anyone to resist. But be warned as late comers may not have any of the heavenly pork knuckles left to order and savour. Other recommendations would include Blanched Octopus, Steamed Scallop and more.

Blackdoor Cafe is a fairly new cafe at Arena Curve, featuring a dark and cozy ambience that reflects its name. This cafe is where we have our first encounter with Cronut, a croissant-doughnut pastry invented by a New York Chef. It has a doughnut shape and possesses a unique croissant-like texture.

Apart from cronuts, the place also serves an array of Western dishes.

The servers were very attentive from the moment of our arrival. They took the effort to go through their menu with us, explaining that cronuts are their specialty dish and recommended us a few of their highlights in a non-pushy way. Since their specialty is cronut, we ordered a Charcoal Green Tea Cronut with Haagen-Dazs ice cream.

The cronuts are essentially croissant textured pastries embedded in a doughnut shape.

Soft and airy on the inside while flaky on the outside, it did not crumble when we started digging in. Drizzled with red beans, coconuts flakes and some charcoal powders on the side, this pastry created quite a visual sensation. The cronut did offer a nice and special taste experience, especially coupled with the Haagen-Dazs ice cream.

Getting around in George Town can be quite a hassle given the small narrow roads and the traffic congestion. But this has to be done as after all, the city centre is where many charms of the island are located.

The latest initiative by the Penang State Government through the Penang City Council has made commuting easier for locals and visitors alike.

Enter the LinkBike system – where anyone can pick-up their bike and return them at any of the 25 stations located throughout Georgetown for a small fee. For the time being, the first 30-minutes are payment-free. LinkBike charges a mere RM1 for every 1-hour block (subjected to 6% GST) after the first 30 minutes.

Users will however require a smartphone to make it work, as the rental process requires one to log on to their website or via the LinkBike mobile app.

Users will have to scan the QR code displayed on the bike dock or tap the LinkBike card in order to release the bicycle for use. Just cycle on and explore the city to your heart’s content on the cheerful and zippy two-wheeler until you are ready to call it a day.

When you are done, locate one of the many stations scattered around Penang and return the bicycle to a vacant dock.

Each bicycle comes with a lock to secure your rented transportation while you pop into any location for a taste of glorious food or a study of Penang’s rich heritage and cultural history.
