An exciting new event is set to take Haverfordwest by storm this winter, with the first Riverside Winter Fair promising a fun-filled day for all ages on Saturday, November 30th, 2024.
This free community event, funded by Pembrokeshire County Council via UK Government, aims to create a magical winter festival atmosphere by merging history, music, food, games and local spirit.
The centrepiece of the Riverside Winter Fair will be the culmination of a unique community project – the performance of a brand-new Cantata titled “The Children of St Saviours.” Composed by Alex McGee, with help from students at Haverfordwest High, will tell the captivating story of Haverfordwest’s rich history, drawing inspiration from recent archaeological discoveries at Western Quayside. Alex who hails from Haverfordwest said “this will be a musical work born of the community, performed by the community for the community” The Cantata will be performed by a children’s choir, the Cantabile Singers of Pembrokeshire, and the County Orchestra.
The Riverside Winter Fair promises a day filled with entertainment for the whole family. Pure West Radio will be broadcasting live, capturing the excitement and sharing local voices with the airwaves. “The Riverside Christmas Fair promises to be a truly spectacular day of celebrations for the whole family, and Pure West Radio can’t wait to be a part of the excitement,” said Pure West Radio’s Station
Manager, Toby Ellis. “The lineup of entertainment and events throughout the day is truly outstanding, and Pure West is extremely privileged to be a part of the day.”
Witness a banner procession led by the South Wales Police Brass Band, featuring banners created by local primary school children during workshops this autumn. Led by Span Arts: “Span is thrilled to facilitate the Winter Fair banner-making workshops. With a rich history of community art, we’re excited to create banners for each of the 5 wards.”
Downloadable flag templates and ideas will be available on the event website for any child who wants to create their own flag and participate in the parade.
Haverfordwest’s own Children’s Festival are supporting an art and games experience hosted by the Fair Play Board Game Café, at the Edge Youth Centre, next door to the skatepark. Fair Play will offer a welcoming space to enjoy board games, arts and crafts and connect with others.
Artists Neil Musson and Jono Retallick will be launching their model hot air balloon, a floating gallery and homage to the people of Haverfordwest. The project has been inspired by embroidered tablecloths in the collection of the Haverfordwest Town Museum that contain the signatures of Haverfordwest residents from 1914 onwards. The artists spent a week in Haverfordwest inviting people to add their own name to appear on the balloon.
Haverhub will be hosting a Winter Craft and Makers
Market and Castle Square will transform into a bustling street food market curated by Haverfordwest’s Business Circle.
“The Haverfordwest business circle are delighted to be involved with the riverside fair. We are hoping that an event of this scale at this time of the year will increase footfall and get people into the Christmas spirit,” said HBC Chair Sally Williams
As the day draws to a close, the annual Christmas lights will be switched on by the Deputy Mayor on behalf of the Haverfordwest Town Council and Riverside Shopping Centre. Centre Manager Nigel Stopher said: “We are looking forward the 30th November and the switch on of the Christmas lights throughout Haverfordwest, always a great day for all the family to enjoy and get everyone in the Christmas mood!
“The Haverfordwest Town Clerk has confirmed that the Council is very much looking forward to seeing another great turn out for this year’s Christmas light switch on and it is happy to be supporting this event again this year, including the annual Schools’ Christmas Card Competition. The winner will be invited to press the button to switch the lights on with the Deputy Mayor after the final countdown.”
Haverfordwest’s Councillor Thomas Tudor says: “As County Councillor for the Castle Ward I am looking forward to the Riverside Fair to be held on the 30th of November 2024. There will be plenty of Fun for all the Family, with music, history, a craft market, street food, a lively street parade, and with the added finishing touch of the turning on of the Christmas lights with Father Christmas and Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer in attendance.”
For many, Boxing Day wouldn’t feel complete without taking a refreshing dip in the sea, and Tenby’s iconic Boxing Day Swim offers the perfect opportunity to do just that. Whether you’re looking to brave the cold for charity or simply soak in the festive atmosphere, the Tenby Boxing Day Swim has something for everyone. To ward off the post-swim chill, participants can warm up with a traditional beach bonfire and a serving of hot soup – a comforting reward after taking the plunge.
If you’re up for the challenge or just looking to enjoy the festive cheer, head to Tenby’s North Beach on Boxing Day for a truly memorable experience!
This year Small World Theatre is extending the joy of the Cardigan Giant Lantern Parade and lighting up more of the town for a longer period as part of Cardigan’s first Festival of Light with the help of the town’s businesses and shop keepers.
The Festival of Light / Gŵyl y Golau will run from 30th November to 20th December 2024 and has received financial support from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund as part of the Cynnal y Cardi Community Fund, which is administrated by the Cynnal y Cardi team on the behalf of Ceredigion County Council. As well as the magical Christmas lights and Christmas tree organised by Cardigan Town Council, there will be a Light Trail and a joined-up festival programme to include the many events happening at the end of November and in December. With permanently fixed giant lanterns on buildings, light displays, artists’ films, a light-themed exhibition at Canfas, there will be more to visit and celebrate this year.
Siobhan McGovern, Festival Coordinator said: “We’re so delighted with the response to the idea of a Festival of Light from the public and traders. It’s an opportunity to join forces to promote Cardigan as a winter destination with its many talented artists, unique businesses and top-class events presented in town.”
Cardigan’s shops and businesses are also joining in with many making a feature lantern to add to their Christmas
widow displays. The company’s artists are welcoming Cardigan’s businesses to create a feature lantern for their Christmas window display on Friday 25 October from 4pm - 8pm.
Cllr Clive Davies said:“Cardigan has a strong vein of creativity and a can-do attitude, once again Small World Theatre with their creative talent have brought together this exiting programme under a new Festival of Light. The funding will support the continued success of the Giant Lantern Parade as well as other planned events which I am very much looking forward to.”
Sam Vicary, Marketing Manager added: “We are also asking other event organisers and businesses within Cardigan to let us know about their events over the festive season. We would like to include them within the Festival of Light programme which will be available on creativecardigan. com and advertised through its social media platforms. We’d like to showcase the very best Cardigan has to offer.”
Small World Theatre is already advertising lantern making workshops for the public on Sundays in November. These are free to anyone over the age of 8 (children under 8 can make a lantern with their parent/guardian).
Details of the Parade, links to booking workshops and ways to contact the Festival of Light team are online through Small World Theatre’s website and creativecardigan.com

As Swansea Grand prepares for this year’s giant pantomime Jack and The Beanstalk, we speak with everyone’s favourite radio DJ Scott Mills who will star as Mayor Mills (who funnily enough has his own local radio station in panto land!) this year reprising his role having made his panto debut in 2023.
Scott, last year was your first performing in panto – how was that for you?
Initially I was terrified! When the script came through, I thought – can I actually do this, can I remember all these words.? It was genuinely unlike anything I’ve ever done before; I may have previously had to learn maybe a paragraph for TV but a whole show? It was super nerve wracking, but I always say I like to do something which is out of my comfort zone and last year it was panto. And as it turned out I loved every minute.
Everyone was so kind to me last year and when we started rehearsing something just clicked and I found out I could do it! Being in the room and in the headspace, it just sort of happened. It was such an intense bubble of learning and silliness it quickly moved from being terrifying to me thinking wow this is going to be FUN!
I had such a good time. All the cast all the crew, everyone, was exceptionally supportive of me as a newbie! Everyone says that your panto family become like family and its true! I’ve got new friends for life; in fact I got the panto blues when it ended last year. It was such a fun experience and that’s why I’m doing it again! This time in Swansea.
So, what do you think it will be different for you this year and what are you most looking forward to.
Now I know what to expect and as I learnt so much last year, I don’t think I’ll be as scared! I’m really looking forward to the adrenaline buzz you get from going out live on stage. As soon as the music and lights come up and you hear the audience from your dressing room it’s a real buzz. Even if you’re really tired there’s no feeling like it. It’s amazing to look out and see the looks on the kids’ faces. Mum and dad are there, Gran and Grandad are there, the whole family and they are all having such a good time. It’s an absolute must for so many people at Christmas, panto and Christmas just go hand in hand for me, a lot of people make it part of their celebrations. To hear and see those audiences, well, I just can’t wait.
I’m also looking forward to meeting the rest of the cast. I’ve met Kev (Johns) before, he is Mr Swansea, I mean, he’s everywhere! I’ve worked on events with him in Wales and am looking forward to being part of the Swansea Grand team this year!
The Swansea audiences are renowned for getting stuck in with panto, it’s a real tradition in the city.
So I have heard! My husband and family live about 30 minutes from Swansea Grand so I know the area and the theatre really well and visit a lot. When I was at BBC radio 1 a few years ago we did a big weekend there which was amazing so I’m all over Swansea and South Wales. You can’t beat the Welsh, the humour the warmth, and I know from talking to my in-laws what a massive deal panto is in Swansea – everyone goes, and that’s what I can’t wait to be part of!
You’re bringing your ‘Mayor Mills’ back to the stage do you think you’ll bring anything new to your character this year?
Yes he is back, and now that I have the confidence I didn’t know I had, I’m looking forward to playing with him a little more. He still needs to be kind as he is there to look after the community, so I won’t be turning him into the panto villain overnight, but I’m looking forward to bringing in a bit more to him.
And this year you will be working with a brand new never-seenbefore digital set….
That is just so exciting. It just looks phenomenal; I know the previous Swansea set won awards and I’ve heard this one will be just as sensational. There’s so much you can do with these kinds of sets it’s insane. I think these days when people come to panto when they may not have been for a while, they can be quite taken aback at quite how good it is and the digital sets give it a whole new lease of life! It’s next level - I can’t wait.
It’s a busy time of year for you with panto running alongside your BBC radio 2 radio show how do you do it- do you sleep?
Well, its nuts!! But we make it work. Last year on Christmas day, which was pretty much the only day off, I slept a lot! I don’t think I made it past 3pm… it was dinner and then sleep. But I wouldn’t change it. Once you are into the run the adrenaline keeps you going.
It sounds like you’re a panto fan! Would it be fair to say the start of Scott Mills panto career, perhaps we’ll be talking to you on the 50th panto anniversary in years to come?
Oh yeah absolutely – I’ve always loved panto as an audience member and now I love it even more being on the stage. I truly hope so, it’s so fun! I get now why people say once you do panto you’ll get the bug. Guess what they are right. I have the panto bug and its not going anywhere soon!
The Trots are so poor they don’t have a bean to their name and what’s more, there’s an evil and greedy giant terrifying the village. Will they really have to sell Buttercup, the family cow just to survive? Can Jack defeat the giant, win the heart of the girl he loves and turn the Trots’ fortunes around?
Book your tickets for this ‘moo-vellous’ family friendly panto which will leave everyone aged 4 to 104 feeling full of ‘beans’!

Jonathan Alden as both the Prince and the Beast. Now living in Swansea, Jonathan has performed in Les Misérables, Phantom of the Opera, and Oliver!. He’s especially thrilled to perform his first Welsh panto in Carmarthen.

3rd generation ★★★★★
We cannot rave enough about the Yoto player. It’s the perfect gift for children of all ages, as it grows with them through their developmental stages. While the age suitability indicates that it is for children aged three years and older for independent use, the Yoto player offers much more versatility. It can be used as a white-noise machine to soothe babies, as a nightlight and gentle sleep trainer for toddlers, and, of course, as an audiobook reader and creative outlet for older children.
Getting started is easy: simply plug it in, switch it on, and sign up for an online account that only adults can access. This ensures that parents can manage the content available to their children. You can load content onto the device by purchasing cards from the online store. When you buy a card, you receive a physical copy, but your purchase is also available on your account, allowing for instant play. Children love collecting these cards, which feature a wide variety of popular titles. From Harry Potter and Horrible Histories to Roald Dahl, Disney classics, and other childhood favorites, there’s something for everyone. The cards are easy for kids to insert into the Yoto device. Our mini testers have enjoyed the latest Harry Potter releases and rediscovered Enid Blyton’s Famous Five, while younger testers have loved the Sleepy Tales and calming bedtime wind-down cards, making the Yoto player a cherished addition to our family.

creative road pack ★★★★★
As huge fans of Connetix, we were absolutely thrilled to learn about the new road packs released this year. Connetix offers an extensive range of high-quality magnetic tiles that promote open-ended play for children, fostering creativity and imagination. The sets are designed to be durable and safe, making them ideal for children of various ages. Our testers particularly enjoyed this new road set, which allowed them to construct a mini town using the tiles. They were able to create a variety of structures, including houses, shops, and more, all connected by the track.
Both our four-year-old and seven-year-old testers found themselves returning to this set time and time again, demonstrating its appeal across different age groups. While the initial cost of the set is on the higher side, the investment is well worth it. The quality of the materials ensures that the tiles will last for years, enduring the wear and tear of play. Moreover, as children grow and their interests evolve, this versatile set can adapt to new imaginative play scenarios. In summary, the Connetix road pack is not only a fun addition to our playtime but also a valuable resource that supports creativity and development.

The concept of Lovevery is truly a winner in our eyes. With their subscription service, you receive a play kit every two months that is tailored to your child’s developmental stage. Each toy is specifically designed to build neural connections in young minds, promoting healthy cognitive growth. The quality of the toys is exceptional, ensuring they can be passed down to other children in the future.
Our mini tester explored the ‘Babbler’ play kit, intended for children aged 13-15 months. This kit included a delightful array of items such as a ball run with a hide-and-seek box, a wooden stacker, a wooden puzzle, a board book, and more. Additionally, Lovevery provides a play guide for parents, which offers tips and insights on how to engage with the toys effectively.
The moment our little tester saw the box, their face lit up with excitement. We appreciated the opportunity to gradually introduce the new toys over the two-month period; bringing out a fresh toy on a rainy day was a wonderful surprise. This subscription makes for a very special gift, though it’s worth noting that individual play kits are available for purchase without signing up for the subscription.

Our testers returned to this wobble board time and time again, finding it an engaging way to channel their energy. For active and fidgety children, the wobble board proved to be an excellent tool for focusing their movements while developing balance and proprioception (the body’s awareness of its position and movements). Not only did our testers enjoy standing and swaying on the board, but they also discovered various creative ways to use it.
We observed them incorporating the wobble board into different play scenarios, such as using it as a step to reach the sink for handwashing or as a bridge in the towns they constructed with their other toys. This versatility adds tremendous value, allowing the board to be used in both active play and everyday tasks.
One of our key criteria for evaluating a toy is whether children continue to show interest in it, and this wobble board certainly passed that test. Its lasting appeal and multifunctionality made it a standout favorite among our testers, proving to be more than just a balance toy—it became a staple in their imaginative play and daily routines.

This is an excellent gift for kids who love having something to care for. Waddles, a robotic penguin, can walk (with a lead included), dance, eat, and even burp, adding plenty of interactive fun. His soft, plush texture makes him irresistible to touch, and he seems to respond well to being stroked, which our tester loved. We were surprised by how attached our tester became to Waddles, eagerly following him as he waddled around the house.
Waddles is well made and has enough features to keep children entertained for extended periods. His range of actions—from walking to dancing—made for engaging play, fostering a sense of responsibility and nurturing. While he does require batteries to keep him moving, Waddles is otherwise low maintenance, providing hours of independent play without needing much intervention.
Overall, Waddles quickly became a favorite toy, combining adorable, lifelike features with fun, interactive elements. He’s perfect for kids who enjoy taking care of their toys and offers just the right balance of entertainment and companionship.
Toddlers can’t resist the charm of Peppa Pig, and this Duplo set is sure to have them beaming from ear to ear. With all the necessary pieces, children can build their very own Peppa Pig house and even host a birthday party. Our toddler tester absolutely loved this set, thoroughly enjoying both the construction of the house and the various play elements. However, they also relished the opportunity to smash it up—after all, preschoolers are known for their chaotic, playful destructiveness! The ability to build different structures from the component parts added to the fun.
Our little tester got loads of use out of this set, as it includes Peppa and two of her friends, who accompanied them during bath time, car journeys, and days at nursery. The versatility of this Duplo set means there’s plenty of play mileage to be had; it’s far more than just a one-trick pony. It encourages creativity, imaginative play, and social interaction, making it a fantastic addition to any toddler’s toy collection. Overall, this Peppa Pig Duplo set is a delightful way to engage little ones while allowing them to explore their creativity and have fun in countless ways.

As the Christmas season approaches, finding the perfect gift becomes a top priority. This year, why not surprise your loved ones with a taste of Pembrokeshire tradition wrapped in the spirit of adventure? Barti Rum, Wales’ favourite pirateinspired rum, has launched its spiced rum and award-winning Cream Liqueur in Tesco stores nationwide—just in time for Christmas.
Perfect for adding warmth to those cold winter nights, Barti’s spiced rum and plant-based Cream Liqueur bring a unique blend of Welsh heritage and Caribbean flair to your celebrations. Infused with wild hand-picked Pembrokeshire seaweed, Barti Spiced Rum offers an unforgettable silkysmooth taste, rich with umami undertones. With its sustainable packaging made from 50% recycled glass, it’s not just a treat for the taste buds, but also a thoughtful, eco-conscious gift this Christmas season.
Fran Barnikel, Managing Director of Barti Rum, says, “Our rum is the perfect marriage between Caribbean distilling and Welsh flavour.” He adds, “With this new spiced rum, we are able to bring the Pembrokeshire flavour to every corner of the country, and we can’t thank Tesco enough for being a part of this.”
But Barti Rum isn’t just a drink—it’s a taste of Welsh history. The brand takes its name from John ‘Barti Ddu’ Roberts, a young man from
Pembrokeshire who set out to sea in the 17th century. His journey, however, took an unexpected turn when he was captured by pirates, soon becoming one of the most notorious pirates of his time—better known as Bartholomew Roberts. The Barti Rum label, displaying a traditional Welsh ship, honours this legacy of seafaring adventure, merging the bold spirit of Welsh history with every sip.
For those who prefer something a little sweeter, Barti’s Cream Liqueur—ideal for vegans and those with lactose-free diets—delivers a fullbodied, creamy flavour with notes of vanilla, clove, cinnamon, and a hint of orange. Whether sipped on its own or added to festive cocktails, it’s a luxurious addition to any Christmas gathering.
Tesco Wales buyer, Nathan Edwards, shared his excitement: “The Barti Rum drinks are synonymous with enjoyment and fun in Wales, and we are happy to be a part of their journey in bringing the Pembrokeshire flavour and culture to the whole of Wales.” He adds, “I look forward to an ongoing partnership with this company that is so rich in history.”
With Barti Rum’s deep roots in Pembrokeshire’s rich maritime history, it brings a story of adventure to every bottle. This Christmas, gift the taste of the Welsh coast, and let your loved ones enjoy the spirit of the season in every sip.
For over 50 years, Selwyn’s Seafoods has been a cornerstone of the Welsh seafood industry, with its roots firmly planted in the picturesque Gower Peninsula. What began as a small, family-run venture has evolved into a well-known name, supplying high-quality seafood to fishmongers, restaurants, and retail outlets across the UK and beyond. At the heart of this success story lies the Jones family’s pioneering spirit, and a passion for delivering the finest seafood.
The business was founded by Selwyn Jones, born in 1929 in the small fishing village of Penclawdd, South Wales, where the company’s factory still operates today. Selwyn’s journey into seafood began in 1940 when, as a young boy, he left school to help support his mother by gathering cockles and laver seaweed from the Gower estuary sands. They would cook these local delicacies and sell them at Swansea Market, marking Selwyn’s first steps in what would become a lifetime dedicated to seafood.
In 1945, a life-changing event occurred when Selwyn and his mother were involved in an accident with a US Army vehicle, from which they both sustained serious injuries. However, ever the entrepreneur, Selwyn used the compensation to purchase one of the first vans in his village, launching ‘Selwyn’s Seafoods’. He began driving around the South Wales Valleys, selling cockles and laverbread—bringing the taste of
the sea to inland communities. His ringing bell became a familiar and welcome sound, and his reputation for quality grew quickly.
By 1948, Selwyn and his wife Linda were working tirelessly together, and their seafood became synonymous with excellence. The first Selwyn’s Seafoods factory was built on the very spot where today’s modern facilities still stand, a testament to the enduring success of the business. Under Selwyn’s son, Brian, and his wife Alyson, the company continued to thrive, expanding not only across Wales but into Europe by the 1990s.
In 2014, Selwyn’s grandson Ashley and his wife Kate took the helm, ushering in a new era for the family business. One of their most innovative creations was the Selwyn’s Crispy Seaweed Snack, tapping into the rising demand for healthy, nutritious foods. Seaweed, often referred to as a superfood, is packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, making it an excellent addition to a balanced diet. It is especially rich in iodine, which is vital for maintaining healthy thyroid function, and is also known to
support heart health, improve gut function, and provide antiinflammatory benefits. Selwyn’s seaweed snacks have introduced a modern twist to this traditional Welsh ingredient, helping to further expand the company’s reach.
Today, Selwyn’s Seafoods remains a proudly family-run business, now managed by the third generation of Joneses. They continue to produce their signature cockles, laverbread, and seaweed snacks with the same commitment to quality that made Selwyn a household name. The company’s latest venture, the Selwyn’s Seafood Shack, has opened as part of their factory visitor centre and shop, offering customers the chance to enjoy a range of seafood delights and artisan products, right where it all began.
The Jones family’s enduring commitment to innovation and quality, coupled with their respect for the traditions of Welsh seafood, has made Selwyn’s a trusted name in the industry. As they continue to explore new culinary adventures, their legacy of tasty discoveries remains stronger than ever.
Two centuries ago, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) was established, a charitable entity born from the vision of safeguarding lives at sea. Despite its maritime mission, the inception of this noble service took place on terra firma, within the bustling epicentre of the City of London.
The concept of a dedicated lifeboat service sprang from the mind of Sir William Hillary, an Isle of Man inhabitant, who in 1823 set forth his ideas through a pamphlet. Initially met with indifference, his persistent efforts eventually garnered the attention of a cadre of prominent Londoners.
On the evening of 4 March 1824, a distinguished assembly convened at the London Tavern on Bishopsgate to deliberate on Hillary’s proposal. This illustrious group comprised notable figures such as the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Wilson, the Liberal MP for Southwark, and William
Wilberforce, a fervent advocate against slavery, with their names enduring in the RNLI’s historical records.
According to RNLI archivist Hayley Whiting, the bicentennial of this foundational meeting represents a momentous milestone. The original minutes of that gathering not only outlined the charity’s objectives but have also guided its course over two hundred years, maintaining its commitment to volunteerism and funded solely by charitable contributions.
Where the London Tavern once stood, now rises a modern office edifice, but at its base, a stone plaque commemorates the inception of the RNLI two centuries ago, honouring the visionaries who laid its groundwork.
The connection between the city and the RNLI remains profound, with the charity’s headquarters situated in London and a historic boatyard in Poplar, east London, where lifeboats damaged in rescue missions were repaired from 1882 to 1939.
The RNLI’s enduring legacy in London was fortified following the tragic Thames disaster on 20
August 1989, when the Marchioness party boat and the dredger Bowbelle collided, claiming 51 lives. This catastrophe led to a comprehensive review of Thames safety and the subsequent establishment of a dedicated lifeboat service in the capital, with stations at strategic locations including Teddington, Chiswick, Tower Pier, and Gravesend.
Janet Kelly, the inaugural manager at Tower Pier, highlights the fortunate acquisition of the pier for the symbolic sum of one pound, underlining the strategic importance of the location for the RNLI’s operations in London. Today, Tower Pier is the nation’s busiest, a testament to the critical role of the RNLI’s services.
The RNLI’s bicentenary is celebrated with a thanksgiving service at Westminster Abbey, recognising the contributions of the RNLI’s community across the UK and Ireland. Reflecting on the charity’s journey, Chief Executive Mark Dowie believes the founders would view the RNLI’s current embodiment with immense pride, acknowledging its adherence to their initial vision.
As the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) celebrated its 200th anniversarry, the charity brought some of its rich history to life with the release of a stunning collection of colourised images including a 20th century photo of crew from St Davids.
One of the images included in the colourised collection is from St Davids Lifeboat Station in west Wales. The station is situated at St Justinians nearby to St Davids, the smallest city in the United Kingdom. The lifeboat station was established in 1869 at the request of the local community.
Not often obvious in the old black and white photographs, lifeboat crews would traditionally wear red hats. In the picture from St Davids, the colour brings the vibrant red out as the crew walk up from the boathouse with the Welsh coastline in the background.
The crew in the 1960s image are also wearing traditional RNLI Guernseys, (sometimes called a Gansey) a woollen jumper with a simple red ‘RNLI’ embroidered on the front – something today’s lifeboat crews still wear for ceremonial duties.
From community events to candid snapshots, the full collection of 11 black and white images have been painstakingly cleaned and colourised with folds, scratches and dust removed using digital technology to shine new light on 200 years of saving lives at sea.
The striking images from across the UK and Ireland include courageous lifeboat crews, early fundraising street collections, and iconic scenes of close-knit communities coming together to launch and recover lifeboats.
RNLI Heritage and Archive Research Manager Hayley Whiting said: ‘The carefully coloured images illustrate just a few highlights of the incredible history of lifesaving over the previous two centuries, where over 144,000 lives have been saved to date.
‘To see the crew of St Davids lifeboat walking up from the boathouse wearing their traditional red hats, the yellow sou’westers of the children fundraising or the vibrant blue sea off the Isle of Man, the reworked images really do bring a different perspective on some of our archived pictures.
‘Each image has been brought to life by the RNLI in-house creative team with hours spent on attention to detail, along with research being undertaken to ensure each one gave a true, lifelike representation.’
SIR WILLIam HILLaRy’S vision for a service dedicated to saving lives at sea became a reality in Bishopsgate’s trendy City of London Tavern on 4 march 1824.
Sir William Hillary’s vision for a service dedicated to saving lives at sea became a reality in Bishopsgate’s trendy City of London Tavern on 4 March 1824.
Living in Douglas on the Isle of Man, Hillary saw the treacherous nature of the sea first-hand. He witnessed dozens of shipwrecks around the Manx coast and saved many lives with the help of locals.
In the early 19th century there was an average of 1,800 shipwrecks a year around our coasts. And the danger of shipwreck was an accepted way of life at sea.
But Hillary refused to sit by and watch people drown.
A year earlier on 28 February 1823, Sir William Hillary made an impassioned appeal to the nation.
He published a pamphlet detailing his plans for a lifeboat service manned by trained crews for all of the UK and Ireland.
He sent the pamphlet to the British Navy, ministers and prominent citizens, appealing for the formation of
a National Institution for the Preservation of Lives and Property from Shipwreck.
At the heart of this institution would be ‘a large body of men … in constant readiness to risk their own lives for the preservation of those whom they have never known or seen, perhaps of another nation, merely because they are fellow creatures in extreme peril.’
The priorities of the institution would be ‘first, the preservation of human life from shipwreck …, secondly (provide) assistance to vessels in distress …, thirdly the preservation of vessels and property …, fourthly the prevention of plunder and depredations in case of shipwreck, fifthly the succour and support of those persons who may be rescued …, sixthly the bestowing of suitable rewards on those who rescue the lives of others from shipwreck or who assist vessels in distress …’
But Hillary’s noble idea fell on deaf ears – the Admiralty refused to help.
Sir William Hillary didn’t give up. Instead he rebranded his appeal for the more philanthropic members of London society. And this time it worked.
The idea caught the eye of Thomas Wilson, energetic Liberal MP for Southwark, and shipping
magnate George Hibbert, Whig MP for Seaford and Chairman of the West Indies Merchants.
Despite some personal differences, the three men became a formidable force and the campaign rapidly gathered momentum.
An interim committee was appointed while plans were made for a public meeting.
More and more benefactors came onboard, inspired by the committee’s rigorous face-to-face lobbying and advertising of the public meeting.
King George lV assured royal patronage and the Prime Minister Robert Jenkinson, 2nd Earl of Liverpool, agreed to be President.
Praised as the ‘Father of the Institution’, it was a landmark moment for Sir William Hillary, whose vision had finally become a reality.
King George lV graciously granted the Royal prefix to the Institution’s name, making it the Royal National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck.
Two months later, Sir William Hillary wrote:
‘ … this Institution has been [honoured] by the high patronage of the King … sanctioned by many of the most distinguished characters in the church and state, and sustained by the bounty of a generous nation …
‘It only remains for me to express the heartfelt satisfaction … that this Institution is now established on principles which will extend its beneficial effects to the most distant shores, and to generations yet unborn.’
On 5 October 1854, the Institution’s name was changed to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution – the RNLI – as we are known today.
ST DaVIDS RNLI said they had a wonderful time on our annual visit to Solva harbour week, with two hours of constant lifeboat tours and over £265 raised.
The opportunity to meet and greet aboard the lifeboat is a highlight of the crew calendar and the support is greatly appreciated.
The station said: “Thank you to Solva Harbour Society and the harbour master for welcoming us once again. And a big thank you to Louise at Cafe on the Quay for providing our cre with warm food.”
aNGLE RNLI Lifeboat Station has thanked Valero Pembroke Oil Terminal (VPOT) - an international energy company based locally - for contributing to the continuation of lifesaving operations.
VPOT is a major fuel terminal on the Milford Haven Waterway, and this donation to Angle RNLI Lifeboat Station in West Wales, supplements the donation of fuel that has been received from Valero Pembroke Refinery since 2005. 10,000 litres of fuel is donated annually, enough to fuel a Tamar’s journey all the way around the coast of the UK, with some fuel to spare.
In 2023, Angle RNLI lifeboat launched 83 times and saved three lives.
Last month signalled the beginning of a six-month trial to operate Angle’s all-weather Tamar class lifeboat across the waterway in Milford Haven, from the Port Authority’s jetty.
Jordan Habin RNLI Fundraising and Partnership Manager accepted the donation on behalf of the RNLI today (19 August 2024). She said:
‘On behalf of the RNLI, I would like to thank Valero for their continued support and the generous donations they’ve made to lifeboat stations in Pembrokeshire for nearly 20 years.
‘Without fuel and donations, our lifeboats and crew can’t go to sea and save lives.’
extraordinary dedication of its volunteers.
Founded in 1973, the branch owes its inception to the tragic loss of Thomas Sinclair, who was lost at sea in 1959. This heartbreaking event propelled his widow, Joan Sinclair, to help establish the Hakin Point branch, driven by the desire to ensure that others would not suffer the same fate.
Joan Sinclair’s legacy was carried forward by her son, Tom Sinclair, who served as the chairman of the branch for many years until his death in 2011. His leadership and unwavering commitment were pivotal in maintaining the branch’s vibrancy and effectiveness. Under his stewardship, the branch became a cornerstone of the community, raising substantial funds to support the RNLI’s lifesaving missions.
Among the dedicated members of the branch were John Beckett, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 91,
and his wife Dorothy Beckett. John was a long-standing and much-respected member of the RNLI community, contributing significantly to the branch’s fundraising efforts over the years. Dorothy Beckett now holds the unique distinction of being the only surviving member of the original Hakin Point fundraisers. Her connection to the branch underscores the deep ties and personal commitments that have sustained the RNLI’s work in Milford Haven.
The branch also benefited from the efforts of individuals like Ethel Clarke, the press secretary who ensured that the branch’s activities were well-publicised, and Charlie and Chris Munnigs, who were instrumental in organising fundraising events. These figures, along with many others, were the lifeblood of the branch, working tirelessly behind the scenes to support the RNLI’s mission.
Over the decades, the Hakin Point branch became synonymous with community spirit and volunteerism. The funds raised by these dedicated individuals not only
supported the local Angle Lifeboat Station but also contributed to the RNLI’s broader efforts across the UK. The branch’s activities included a variety of fundraising events, from galas and raffles to community fairs, each aimed at generating much-needed resources for the lifesaving operations of the RNLI.
Sadly, as time has passed, many of the original members of the Hakin Point branch have passed away, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication. The loss of John Beckett in 2022 and the earlier passing of Thomas Sinclair and others mark the end of an era. Yet, their contributions have left an indelible mark on the RNLI and the Milford Haven community.
Dorothy Beckett, as the last surviving member of the original fundraisers, represents a living link to the branch’s storied past. Her continued presence is a reminder of the enduring legacy of those who served the RNLI with such dedication and commitment.
As we reflect on the history of the Hakin Point RNLI branch, it is important to honor the memory of those who dedicated their time and energy to this vital cause. Their work ensured that the RNLI could continue to operate in Milford Haven, providing a critical service to those at risk on the water. Though the branch is no longer active, its legacy will remain a shining example of community spirit and the power of volunteerism.
a SPECIa L concert was held in Pembrokeshire to honour a long-serving member of the Neyland Ladies Choir, Dorothy Beckett, on the occasion of her 90th birthday.
The event took place at St Mary’s Church, Hakin, where Ms Beckett, who has been a dedicated member of the choir for many years, was celebrated for her longstanding commitment to both the choir and her 74 years of fundraising efforts for the RNLI.
The concert drew a large crowd, with Ms Beckett’s family and members of the Angle Lifeboat RNLI among those in attendance. The church was filled to capacity, and all proceeds from the event were donated to the RNLI, a cause close to Ms Beckett’s heart.
Choir president Simon Hancock welcomed attendees and spoke warmly about Ms Beckett’s popularity, not only within the choir but also throughout the local community. During the evening, she was presented with a birthday cake, adding a personal touch to the celebration.
In addition to performances by the Neyland Ladies Choir, the Milford Haven Junior Town Band provided musical entertainment. The band performed a variety of pieces, much to the delight of the audience, and received enthusiastic applause. Solo performances from young talents Mali, Ella-Mae, and Olivia were highlights, while Faith and Nia offered support from the main band.
A former member of the Hakin Point RNLI group, Jan Mathias, paid tribute to Ms Beckett, thanking her for over 50 years of dedication and support to the charity. Representatives of the Angle Lifeboat RNLI, dressed in full uniform, presented Ms Beckett with a long service medal and flowers in recognition of her remarkable contribution.
The choir’s repertoire for the evening included a range of muchloved pieces, with a special performance of ‘Christopher Robin is Saying His Prayers’, in which Ms Beckett reprised a solo part, once again moving the audience with her heartfelt rendition.
A presentation entitled “This is Your Choir Life” was delivered by Noreen Hadfield, offering a touching reflection on Ms Beckett’s 30 years with the choir. Sheila Griffiths curated a slideshow of photographs, showcasing memorable moments and amusing stories from various choir tours and events over the years.
The evening concluded with a rousing rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ led by the choir, with Ms Beckett’s son, Adrian, expressing heartfelt thanks to both the choir and the Junior Band for providing such a wonderful beginning to his mother’s birthday celebrations.
The concert was a fitting tribute to Ms Beckett, whose commitment to her community, both through music and charity, continues to inspire.

It is dedicated to conservation, horticulture, science, education, and the arts. As a landmark Millennium project, the garden spans 568 acres, blending modern innovation with historical charm. It will celebrate its 25th anniversary next year.
Visitors will find a variety of themed gardens, including over 8,000 plant varieties, the world’s largest single-span glasshouse, orchid-filled meadows, a National Nature Reserve, the British Bird of Prey Centre, children’s play areas, and a magical Gruffalo Trail—all set within a historic Regency landscape.
The centerpiece of the garden is the Great Glasshouse, designed by Norman Foster and Partners. Inside its impressive tilted dome, you’ll discover a Mediterranean landscape featuring a six-meter-deep ravine with rock terraces, waterfalls, and streams. A nearby lake provides a humid habitat, and visitors can explore settings like an Australian bushfire aftermath, a Spanish olive grove, or a Chilean fuchsia collection.
The November Antiques Fair promises to be another busy weekend following the huge success of February’s fair, which attracted thousands of visitors. The diversity and quality of antiques, set against the splendid garden backdrop, are key to the fair’s popularity.
Fans of classic antiques can explore various venues, including the Great Glasshouse, showcasing Welsh art and pottery, quality jewelry, outstanding militaria collections, and impressive displays of clocks. In Ty Melyn (formerly Principality House), you’ll find antique furniture, Welsh textiles, books, jewelry, and silver. Near the Millennium Courtyard, a large marquee offers an extensive range of furniture, art glass, militaria, and vintage delights.
The recently transformed Theatr Botanica will exhibit classic pieces like silverware and collections of Moorcroft, Crown Derby, Beswick, Doulton, and Welsh furniture and textiles. The Millennium Courtyard will feature a vibrant Vintage Market with smaller marquees displaying retro and upcycled furniture, vintage toys, clothing, militaria, and tools.
The fair is renowned for its focus on Welsh collecting areas, including pottery, blankets, art, and furniture. A highlight will be the stunning display of period Welsh oak furniture, from children’s chairs and milking stools to dressers and linen press cupboards. Richard Bebb’s impressive collection of Welsh art is a must-see.
Collectors of Welsh pottery will also be delighted, especially with rare
examples of Llanelli pottery. Notably, Alistair and Helen Crawford, along with Michael Gorton of Chapellane Antiques, are known for showcasing the iconic Llanelli “cockerel plates.” These hand-painted, folk-art plates, typically featuring a blue cockerel and distinctive borders, were crafted by Sarah Jane Roberts, affectionately known as Aunty Sal. She produced these unique pieces for over 40 years at South Wales Pottery.
Visitors can also view Michael Gorton’s rare collection of Welsh stick chairs in Theatr Botanica. The fair’s vast selection of antiques and vintage items includes jewelry, watches, books, silver, militaria, vintage clothing, upcycled furniture, and interior design pieces like French brocante.
Militaria enthusiasts will find rare medals, ceremonial swords, and suits of armor. All of this will be set amidst the breathtaking surroundings of the National Botanic Garden of Wales.
The fair runs from 10 AM to 4 PM.
Admission is £12 for a weekend ticket, which also grants five additional days of access to the garden— excellent value for money. Dogs are welcome over the weekend as well.
For more antique-hunting opportunities, Derwen Fairs also hosts monthly events at The Civic Hall in Llandeilo. Upcoming dates include Saturday 6th July, 3rd August, 7th September, 5th October, and 7th December. Welsh produce for Welsh consumers – it’s a simple promise that Blas y Tir has stood by from the very beginning. Whether it’s fresh vegetables or, more recently, Welsh milk, this brand has made it its mission to deliver the best of Welsh farming to supermarket shelves across the nation.
Blas y Tir, which means “Taste of the Land” in Welsh, is known for its strong connection to the local community. All the produce they sell is grown and packed right here in Wales, with much of it sourced from Pembrokeshire. And this local-first ethos is here to stay. The team behind Blas y Tir is committed to ensuring their delicious products remain a staple in Welsh households, grown by local farmers and treated with the care they deserve.
What makes Blas y Tir truly special is its connection to its farmers. The business is actually owned by the very farmers who grow the produce, and many have been working the land for generations. The knowledge and expertise they’ve accumulated are now being passed down to the next generation, ensuring that these family traditions continue. Sustainability is key to their mission – not only do they grow high-quality Welsh produce, but they also work to preserve the landscape, support local wildlife, and strengthen the region’s communities.
To make this connection even stronger, Blas y Tir encourages customers to ‘Meet Your Farmer’. Each of their produce bags proudly displays the name of the farmer responsible for growing the contents, giving shoppers a real sense of where their food comes from. So, next time you’re in the supermarket, take a moment to check the back of your Blas y Tir bag – you’ll know exactly who’s behind the fresh Welsh produce on your table.
Welsh Milk, Produced and Bottled in Pembrokeshire
Building on the success of their vegetables, Blas y Tir has now expanded into dairy, with the recent launch of Blas y Tir Welsh milk. This exciting new product is being stocked in Tesco stores across Wales, offering shoppers a fresh, local choice.
The milk is produced by Pembrokeshire Creamery, the only BRCGS-accredited liquid milk facility in Wales. Huw Thomas, CEO of Pembrokeshire Creamery, said: “We are pleased to be working with Tesco to
launch our new branded Welsh milk onto supermarket shelves for the first time.”
The milk itself is as local as it gets – it comes from Welsh cows, fed on Welsh pasture, and is processed and bottled in Pembrokeshire. From 14th October, you’ll find Blas y Tir Welsh milk in 2-litre bottles of semi-skimmed and whole milk in around 55 Tesco Superstores and Tesco Extras throughout the country.
Thomas added: “Our experience with the Blas y Tir brand shows us that supermarket customers in Wales are much more likely to choose a product if it has a clear, authentic Welsh provenance. Blas y Tir Welsh milk is produced here in Wales for Welsh shoppers, instead of being sent over the border to be processed. It’s offering those customers a more sustainable option, which is authentically 100% Welsh and supports Welsh farmers and producers.”
A Proud Partnership with Tesco Tesco has been instrumental in bringing Blas y Tir’s Welsh milk to the shelves. Nathan Edwards, a Tesco Wales buyer, expressed his excitement about the partnership: “We are so proud to work with Pembrokeshire Creamery, a company that exemplifies entrepreneurship and community, creating jobs and opportunities for local people.”
Edwards also highlighted the importance of supporting local producers: “It’s important for us to champion local producers who share our commitment to quality and community. They’ve made an impressive start, and we’re excited to see how this partnership will benefit both our customers and the wider community.” With its roots firmly planted in the rich soil of Pembrokeshire, Blas y Tir continues to grow, offering Welsh shoppers more sustainable, locally-produced options that celebrate the land, the farmers, and the communities of Wales. Whether it’s their fresh produce or their new Welsh milk, Blas y Tir is proud to bring the taste of Wales to your table.

The future of home design is about to change dramatically, and 2025 promises trends that will revolutionise how we experience our living spaces. From bringing nature indoors to integrating the latest in smart technology, these trends will redefine home aesthetics and functionality, creating spaces that are more efficient, eco-friendly, and visually captivating. Here’s a look at the top six home design trends for 2025.
Bringing Nature Indoors
Biophilic design is all about connecting our indoor spaces with the natural world. This trend focuses on incorporating natural light, plants, and organic materials into home interiors to create a seamless blend between the inside and the outdoors.
In 2025, homes will be wellness sanctuaries, and biophilic design plays a key role in reducing stress, improving air quality, and enhancing overall wellbeing. Picture soft morning light filtering through sheer curtains, casting a glow over lush
greenery, creating a forest-like atmosphere in your living room. To bring this trend into your home, consider introducing a variety of indoor plants, from large fiddle leaf figs to small succulents. Opt for furniture made from natural materials like wood, stone, or bamboo, and maximise natural light by replacing heavy drapes with light-filtering shades or adding skylights where possible.
Flexibility is Key
As modern life continues to evolve, so does the way we use our living spaces. Multifunctional spaces— rooms that serve more than one purpose—are becoming increasingly important. Whether it’s a home office that doubles as a guest room or a living area that transforms into a home gym, flexibility is crucial.
With remote working and changing lifestyles on the rise, creating multifunctional spaces allows homeowners to make the most of their square footage. Convertible furniture, such as sofa beds or
fold-away desks, helps maximise the usability of any room. Open floor plans offer the fluidity needed to shift between various functions, and smart storage solutions ensure that clutter is minimised, allowing the space to adapt effortlessly.
Sustainability at Home
Sustainability continues to be a priority in home design, and in 2025, green design will focus on reducing environmental impact through the use of eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient technologies. This trend encourages the integration of sustainable solutions like solar panels, energyefficient appliances, and the use of recycled or reclaimed materials.
With increasing environmental awareness, homeowners are looking to reduce their carbon footprint while also lowering energy costs. Incorporating energy-efficient appliances, using renewable energy sources such as solar power, and choosing materials like bamboo or reclaimed wood for renovations are all ways to embrace green design in the home.
Smart home technology is set to become a standard feature in homes by 2025, offering unmatched convenience, security, and energy efficiency. This trend sees the integration of sophisticated automation systems that make everyday tasks easier, from controlling the lights and thermostat to enhancing home security.
Voice-activated systems allow you to adjust lighting, temperature, and security settings with simple commands, while automated lighting systems can be programmed to turn on and off based on room occupancy or specific schedules. Smart security features, such as motion detectors, cameras, and smart locks, ensure a higher level of safety and control over your home environment.
A Vibrant Aesthetic
Gone are the days when neutral tones dominated home design. In 2025, bold colours and eyecatching patterns will take centre stage, transforming interiors into lively, personality-filled spaces. Whether through vibrant wall colours or playful patterns, this trend is about making a statement.
Bold colours and patterns inject life into a home, allowing homeowners to express their individuality. A great way to embrace this trend is by creating an accent wall—paint one wall a bold shade or choose a patterned wallpaper to make the room pop. Consider colourful furniture or accessories to complement the space, and don’t shy away from mixing patterns, such as pairing florals with geometric prints, for a dynamic, layered look.
For those who love a touch of nostalgia, vintage and retro elements will continue to be a popular design choice in 2025. This trend brings a sense of history and character into the home through the use of antique furniture, retro colour schemes, and nostalgic décor.
Incorporating vintage and retro pieces adds depth and personality to a home, making it feel livedin and unique. Vintage furniture, such as a midcentury armchair or an antique chest of drawers, can become focal points that tell a story. Retro colours like mustard yellow or avocado green can be used to create a groovy, throwback vibe, while nostalgic accessories—think rotary phones or vintage posters—help to complete the look.
