CHALLENGES:

We experienced a few different challenges with this project.

The first was a bulkhead in the kitchen that we needed to work around, but also incorporate in a way that didn’t make it the focus of the space. Another challenge we faced was the fact that the female homeowner was shorter in height, so we wanted to make sure the kitchen was accessible and worked for her. It was also a smaller space so we wanted to make sure we used it as effectively as possible.

SOLUTION:

We really wanted to create a solid design plan to work with the bulkhead and try and make it less noticeable. So we brought the cabinet heights down under the bulkhead, but made them an inch deeper, expanding from our standard 12” depth to 13”. The crown molding ended up lining up perfectly with the bulkhead making it much less noticeable so those were great solutions that the homeowners were really happy with.

Since she was a bit shorter in height, we actually lowered the cabinets to better suit her needs and make them more functional. An additional counter and prep space was designed and tailored to her height. We also did a few things to make the most of the space, by adding in banks of drawers throughout the kitchen, including a the corner. We also included some servo-drive drawers, which automatically open when you push on them with your hands, hips or legs if your hands happen to be full. In the corner, we incorporated a blind corner cabinet to ensure minimal wasted space. And finally, the cherry on top was a seating area with storage space we built in for them to replace the standard table and chairs.

This not only added seating to the smaller space, but extra storage space and prep area.

We are so happy with how it turned out and really enjoyed working side by side with these homeowners to make this the kitchen of their dreams!
