CONCEPTUALISATION

Week 1

A101_LOFTING & STATE CAPTURING

Lofting with two curves: This set shows how surfaces can be manipulated from simple to complex form in parametric modelling. The first shape is created by only folding in the horizontal direction. Twisting and folding in vertical direction begin to be involved from the second shape, which could be more complex in terms of contructability issue.

Lofting with three curves: This set has an overall triangular shape, which could be explianed as a sense of stability and be easy to realize in built environment. As they are all formed by three curves, it is difficult to figure out the relationship between each part of the structure just by observation. Structures like these could become a place for advanture.

Lofting with four curves: This set gives a very irregular and unitied impression due to there are more points available as parameters to control and play with. The forth sturcture is the most interesting one from my point of view because of the contrast and comparison between different parts: sharpness v.s. softness, inclusion v.s. exclusion.

7

A102_TRIANGULATION ALGORITHMS

This lightweight, floating structure is created initially by lofting that forms a fluctuated shape with then the application of Delaunay edges to all points populated onto the surface.

8

This planar, web-like and concentrated structure can be modelled using Voronoi over the same lofting shape for the previous pages. The difference is this structure is restricted by a rectangular boundary.

9

A102_TRIANGULATION ALGORITHMS

This ‘topography made of points’ is modelled by Metaball over a set of 2D points. The layers enrich the pattern with tactility. It could be very interesting if applied to theme park planning. 10

Mass form, dense and heavy object with irregular opening to reduce the weight. The structure is created by applying Voronoi 3D to points on a spiral and then randomly delet seveal cells.

11

A102_TRIANGULATION ALGORITHMS

By mirroring an a set of boxes formed by Oc-Tree over the points on a spiral, this interesting structure is erected. It looks like a manipulated skyscraper and lego toy.

Week 2

13

A201_MORE SURFACE

Surface created simply using loft components with two curves that can be controlled in rhino. This shape is derived from modelling aroung the shoulder of human figure.

14

This surface is created around the arm of a human figure using 1 sweep. The overall shape is smooth and light, which gives a sense of dynamic and tranquility. My favourite in this week

Surface moulded around leg using edge surface components. The structure might be developed into a decoration to knee or a equipment to facilitate a person’s movement

Multiple circles are created around human body in grasshopper first, which are then lofted into a integrated surface.

Surface created simply using loft components with two curves. It is created to suspend around the human figure, which can create a contrust between mobility and stability.

15

A202_BOX MORPH

The structure is formed by putting a thin cylinder repetitively on to a surface. The surface is first treated by Surface Box with special considertaion to the normal direction, which allow the variation on the height of boxes. The overall feeling of this shape is energic heavy and

16

The repeating unit opening on top. The s to the previous one,

t for this model is a box with a cicular shape has a much neater appearance , but the sense of weight is still there

By penetrating through the surface, the sturcture creates a very light sensation. It looks also very flexible. The propogated geometries of this structure is a ring pipe.

25

A203_CONTOUR*

26

Contour lines are created on these surface using components such as Contour or BrepBrep. Lines are latter projected on to the surface from different direction. For the cases of using BrepBrep Components, series of surfaces area produced though Offset to form the cut section first.

27

A204_MESH

The basic mesh before any tranformation for this set of practice is composed on series interlocking rectangular box forms. Tool used here is Mesh Smooth, which creates a smooth edges and softens the rigid structure.

28

This form here is created by bending the previous one and then use Camera Orient component. The sturcure probably can be developed into an interesting place for kids to play around. It looks very similar to a opened bracelet.

29

A204_MESH

These two wierd shapes share a same origin, that one is treated with Polar Array on top of another. By stretching the primary mesh form, an instable and insecure bases are created.

30

31

A204_MESH

The combination of rectangular and circular shapes are very interesting. The primary mesh is formed only using boxes, however, it could be adjusted and transformed into a circle.

32

A205_CONNECTION DETAILS

The connection detail for these five surfaces are created through the application of BrepBrep and Regional Difference, which are later extruded and caped to form a three dimensional structure.

A302_PATTERN & IMAGE SAMPLER

This image is selected because it might allude to the objective of Ceres in Merri Creek. Ceres aims to turn the polluted Merri Creek back to the a sustainable ecosystem. As shown in the picture, a roll seems to be packing up the pavement, as s product of human influence or industry, and returning the nature underneath.

B601_TREE STATISTICS ORIGINAL DATA STRUCTURE:

FLIP MATRIX: The indices of branches and the indices of leaves are switched

GRAFT: Each item inside each list are allocated into its own branches

66

B601_TREE STATISTICS

FLATTEN: Unfold all branches, turn a list of list of items into a list of items.

SIMPLIFY: If inside each path, there are same indices that equal to zero, this component will eliminate the zero.

67

B602_RELATIVE ITEMS

Branches assembled together to form a whole. The overall shape has integrity but not well organized.

68

B602_RELATIVE ITEMS

Branches overlapped together temporarily. Primitive and disordered.

69

B602_RELATIVE ITEMS

Branches well organized due to the smaller matching gaps.

70

B603_PATH MAPPER`

PATH MAPPER, POLYLINE, PIPE Undulating sharp structure. Reminds me the feeling of noise.

71

B603_PATH MAPPER

PATH MAPPER, INTERPOLATE CURVE, PIPE Much more gentle than the previous. Has an appearance assimilates to spring, string and cloth hanger.

72

B603_PATH MAPPER

PATH MAPPER, POLYLINE, Dispatch, RULED SURFACE, EXTRUDE along Y unit vector. Like a maze. Layers gives a sense of hierarchy and curiosity.
