NEIGHBORHOOD NEWSLETTER

SPRING CREEK

Beautification Week We’ve decided to follow in Lehi’s footsteps and have our own beautification week. It will take place this year during Spring Break from April 7th – 13th. Take time this week to make Spring Creek more beautiful. There are many ways to improve the beauty of Spring Creek: pick up garbage, pull weeks, clear waterways, plant trees and plants. We’d love to get a service group together sometime during this week to pick up the walking trails in our community. If interested in participating, please email springcreekhoacec@gmail.com so we can setup a time for everyone. Good news!! There will be two dumpsters delivered to our neighborhood available for your personal use on Wednesday, April 9th. The dumpsters will then be picked up on Monday, April 14th. One will be located next to the new park on Meadow Marsh Dr and the other will be located on 740 E next to Skylark Park. The following items are not allowed when using the dumpsters: • Auto parts (gas tanks, tires, batteries, motor oil, etc) • Paint • Solvents • Fluorescent tubing • Refrigerators • Air Conditioners • Rocks, Dirt, Concrete/Cement • Liquids of any kind

We will have our annual Easter Egg Hunt this year on Saturday, April 19th. We’ll meet at Skylark Park on 740 E (by the tennis courts) at 9:45am. The hunt will begin promptly at 10:00am. The community engagement committee is in need of donations in the form of store bought, individually wrapped candy to fill plastic eggs (preferably non-peanut items) for the kids to hunt. Please drop off donations to 802 E 1530 S no later then Wednesday, April 16th. If you would like to volunteer to stuff and/or hide eggs please email springcreekhoacec@gmail.com. Your help is greatly appreciated!

The only other restriction is that the dumpster must not be loaded higher than the sides (which are 7ft tall).

BASKETBALL ANYONE? It’s that wonderful time of year again. Basketball season has begun and it’s time to root your favorite team on to victory. It’s also time to play a little “hoops” outside. Please take advantage of the two new adjustable basketball hoops that have been installed at the tennis courts on 740 E. The tennis courts will now be multi-use courts! Here are a few easy guidelines: - A responsible adult or mature adolescent over the age of 12 should supervise children using the courts under the age of 12. - Games are on a first come, first play basis. - Children are not to play with, climb or jump on the tennis court nets. - Please keep all rocks/debris off of the multi-use courts. - No bicycle riding, skateboarding, scooter riding or rollerblading on the multi-use courts.

HOA Reminders

Remember that front yards must be installed within 6 months of breaking ground on your new home. Front yards must be sod (pre-cut pieces) only, with an automatic sprinkler system. Vinyl fences must be tan in color. Please visit the resources page on the HOA website for links with detailed information. Monthly statements can be emailed (contact K&R) HOA dues can be paid via ACH drafting (contact K&R). You have the option to pay monthly or yearly. If you’re able to do so, paying yearly provides the HOA with more operating funds to complete projects throughout the community sooner rather than later. No gravel driveways or “horse fences” permitted. Those currently in existence must be converted to landscaping/ concrete or the fencing must be removed by September 1, 2014. When you take your pet for walks in the neighborhood, please remember to pick up after them. There are two new dogipot stations (dog waste removal systems) located along the walking trails.

TENNIS TIPS

By USPTA/PTR Master Professional Fernando Velasco

How To Execute The One Handed Backhand Lob In previous newsletters, I offered tips on how to hit the forehand groundstroke, the two-handed backhand, the one-handed backhand, the forehand volley, the two handed backhand volley, the serve, the forehand half-volley, the one-handed backhand volley, the overhead “smash”, the forehand service return, the backhand service return, the forehand high volley approach shot, the two handed high volley approach shot, the one-handed high volley approach shot, the forehand lob, and the two-handed backhand lob. In this issue, I will offer instructions on how to execute the OneHanded Backhand Lob. This shot is used when a player is forced to retrieve a ball that is hit deep to the backhand side of the player, and the opponent is either charging to the net or staying far back. The player hitting the lob is looking for “air time” to regain balance and court space. This ball should be hit high enough so the players at the net cannot reach and “slam” the ball down, or force the opponent at the base line to retrieve back. In the illustrations, Ceci Griffis, a Member of the Grey Rock Tennis Club, shows the proper technique to execute this stroke. Step 1: The Back Swing: When Ceci is forced deep into the backhand side and realizes that she has to hit a defensive lob, she pivots

to the left and gets her racket back early. Notice that the head of the racket is low and her left hand is on the throat of the racket. Her eyes are focused on the path of the ball and her weight is on her left foot. Step 2: The Point of Contact: Ceci is now ready to hit the ball. Her eyes are now focused on the point of contact and the face of the racket is tilted at a 45 degree angle in order to create height and depth on her lob. Her goal is to keep her head still and not start looking up to her opponent or to the other side of the court. She has released her left hand from the racket and is keeping good balance with both arms to keep the center of gravity in front of her right foot. Step 3: The Follow Through: The success of a deep lob is the follow through. Ceci’s right knuckles are leading the stroke and her left arm is pulling back to keep her balanced. Her should is lifting the racket above her head. Her right hand controls the path of the ball, and the left arm keeps her from turning her hip too early Step 4: The Shuffle Back: Once Ceci finishes the stroke, her goal is to either move forward toward the net top to hit an overhead, or to shuffle back to the middle of the court in order to drive the next ball back to the opponent. In this caption, she moved back to the center of the court waiting for the opponent’s shot to come back.
