Our History JCI’s story begins with Henry Giessenbier Jr., a young man living in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, during a time of incredible growth and change. Giessenbier recognized the talents and passions of the young people around him and envisioned the positive change they could create if they had the right resources. To provide these tools, in 1915 he founded the first JCI movement in his hometown of St. Louis. What began as a local movement spread quickly and with enthusiasm. Young people across the United States and then across the globe joined together as leaders to create positive forces in their communities on a local, national and international scale.

Giessenbier saw JCI as an organization that could harness the energy of young active citizens to overcome a variety of civic challenges through effective leadership. JCI members would have the opportunity to develop as individuals, contribute to the prosperity of economic infrastructure through entrepreneurship, understand and appreciate the social dynamics that enable community problem-solving and promote goodwill, cooperation and understanding amongst all people. That enduring vision lives on through the organization today.

Thousands of incredible people like you!

JCI events are a chance to travel to exciting destinations around the world. Experience new cultures and languages while meeting inspirational people making a difference in their businesses and communities! Like many organizations across the world, JCI had to innovate and turn to online events. Despite the uncertainty of 2020, all four Area Conferences and the JCI World Congress were held safely and successfully. These events gave young entrepreneurs the opportunity to reach across borders and connect while also providing fresh workshops and timely programs.

2020 JCI Kanazawa Conference

Kanazawa, Japan | 21-23 February 2020 The JCI Kanazawa Conference is an international conference that brings delegates together from the Asia-Pacific region and beyond to showcase innovative solutions to advance the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

The 2020 Kanazawa Conference gathered over 3,000 JCI members from all over the world! With their motto “No Earth, No Life,” this program focused on sharing advanced models of various SDG projects across the globe and emphasizing the importance of the environment.

2020 JCI National Presidents Meeting of Africa and the Middle East Beirut, Lebanon | 23-25 January 2020 During the National Presidents Meeting of Africa and the Middle East, chaired by Executive Vice President Asha Auckloo from JCI Mauritius and supported by 2020 JCI Vice Presidents, leaders from 25 countries met with the spirit of inspiration and determination. The event provided opportunities for members to learn from different sessions on the agenda, engage with their fellow counterparts from all over the area, address the issues faced in the area, brainstorm ways to further develop the national organizations through economic and entrepreneurial projects and prepare for the year ahead. Next on the agenda was the launch of a regional environmental initiative, inspired by JCI Lebanon’s flagship project launched in 2017, called “I Green Beirut.” This meeting allowed JCI Lebanon to solidify relationships with new and existing local partners, paving the way for future collaborations which will allow them to further develop the JCI presence in their country.

2020 JCI National Presidents Meeting of America Santa Cruz, Bolivia | 29 January-1 February 2020 All the presidents from North and South America gathered at this meeting to create a campaign called “One America” to promote inclusivity and collaboration across all borders. Strategies and good practices for efficient impact were shared by experienced members lead by 2020 Executive Vice President Kevin Hinds and the 2020 Vice Presidents Shenella Govia, Heather Vardell, Silvetty de la Paz and Fabio Fagundes. Then, JCI Advocacy Committee Chair Argenis Angulo led several valuable sessions about leadership development and shared good practices for team building and tools for becoming outstanding National Presidents.

To celebrate the culture of the host country, JCI Bolivia hosted a National Night for the delegates that included songs, food, dances, and traditional attire from many regions of Bolivia. Everyone was able to enjoy the end of the meeting with a wonderful evening and learn more about Bolivia and its rich culture.

2020 JCI National Presidents Meeting of Europe Chişinău, Moldova | 6-8 February 2020 Led by JCI Executive Vice President for Europe Marion de Groot from the Netherlands, and 2020 JCI Vice Presidents Ellimaija Ahonen, Ana Nikolova, Paolo Bellotti, Jenni Ahlstedt and Mark Smith. Over 30 European leaders gathered for three days to align plans on how to make positive change for young entrepreneurs across Europe. A special focus was put on topics such as marketing strategy, highlighting engagement through awards, integration of alumni, corporate partnership extension and growth and development activities. Beyond this, a decision was also made to create a special taskforce to develop ideas to better take advantage of networks for business opportunities.

23 May 2020 JCI members from across the world gathered together ― remotely ― for the first-ever online JCI Area Conference, the 2020 JCI Conference of America. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the event was unable to take place in Panama City, Panama as originally planned. However, despite the challenges facing them, the 2020 JCI America Board of Directors and team managed to capture the heart and energy of an in-person JCI event through Zoom and Facebook Live.

On 23 May, the 2020 JCI America Board of Directors hosted a lively Awards Ceremony to celebrate the hard work and dedication of JCI members.

Salud! A Gala Celebration of Impact and Innovation recognized the outstanding JCI members, organizations and projects that have made a positive impact in local communities and the world.

12-21 June 2020 The 2020 JCI European Conference was scheduled to be held in Dublin, Ireland. Instead, from 12-21 June, JCI members and friends from across the world enjoyed keynotes, panels and entertainment from the comfort of their own homes. The two-week program was packed with informational sessions, fun activities and a taste of Dublin. The theme was “Engagement, Employment, Empowerment.”

The JCI Europe team and the Dublin Conference Organizing Committee hosted the JCI European Conference Awards Ceremony on 20 June to honor outstanding JCI members, organizations and projects that have made an incredible impact at the local, national and international level.

18-19 July 2020 As with many events this year, it became clear to the organizers that the 2020 JCI Asia-Pacific Conference could not take place in person in Angkor, Cambodia, and they would have to embrace the new normal of online events. Their persistence and patience through difficult circumstances led to another successful online JCI Area Conference in 2020.

With the support of the Asia Pacific Board of Directors and the Asia Pacific Development Council, the 2020 Online JCI Asia Pacific Conference Assembly was held on 18 July, followed by the Awards Ceremony on 19 July. Thousands of people tuned in on Facebook live to watch outstanding members and organizations receive recognition for the fantastic work they’ve done this past year.

13-16 August 2020 The 2020 JCI Africa and the Middle East Conference couldn’t happen in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso as originally planned, but that didn’t stop JCI members, partners and friends from the area and beyond from getting together virtually. JCI leaders and members discussed the area’s strategy and opportunities for growth in the coming year.

Organized by Executive Vice President Asha Auckloo and the Africa and the Middle East Board of Directors, with help from volunteers across the area, the event allowed attendees to enjoy valuable online programs centering on entrepreneurship, professional development and much more! This dynamic team proved that we don’t have to be in the same room to connect with each other and enhance our skills.

Pre-conference events included a Leadership Academy and entrepreneurship training. The Africa and the Middle East Conference also focused on the power of partnerships with the Regional Partnership Summit being launched, and a special networking session was held by JCI’s newest partner at the time, BNI. As with our other 2020 Area Conferences, the JCI Africa and the Middle East Conference was memorable and engaging — a testament to the bonds JCI members share, even virtually.

Remote 24 October - 7 November 2020 The 2020 JCI World Congress was like nothing that had ever been done before. Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Yokohama Congress Organizing Committee (COC) and JCI World Headquarters had to pivot to create the first hybrid event in the organization’s history. While some regional attendees were able to participate in person in the beautiful Yokohama, Japan, many more attendees viewed the content online.

With much gusto, 2020 JCI President Itai Manyere pioneered this first-ever JCI hybrid event. Without missing a step, President Itai confidently led the way in reorganizing and navigating this organization through a mainly cyber world. With his leadership and example, the event helped pave the way for future presidents and Board of Directors to take the reins of the future with confidence.

The theme for the 2020 JCI World Congress was “The Crossroad of Innovation,” and it was a fitting theme for such an unprecedented event. At the World Congress, JCI’s partners were spotlighted in a very unique way. In line with the newly launched JCI RISE initiative, each day of Congress had a theme: RISE with JCI, REBUILD with ICC, INVEST with BNI, SUSTAIN with AIESEC and EVOLVE with WBAF. Each partner hosted keynotes, panels, forums and even podcasts about important topics in the world today.

Ryubun Kojima of JCI Japan was elected and sworn in as 2021 JCI President at the General Assembly. In his inaugural speech, he talked about his theme for the year — “One Future” — and how together, JCI members could make a positive difference in the world by caring for each other.

Towards the end of the week at the 2020 JCI Awards Ceremony, attendees celebrated all of the winning members, organizations and projects that had made great achievements throughout the year. JCI World Headquarters organized the first-ever Virtual Award Winners Reception, where award winners could gather with JCI President Itai, Secretary General Kevin Hin and the 2020 TOYP to recognize their achievements, network and share a toast to a successful year and even greater impact in 2021.

JCI Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World (TOYP) honorees demonstrate extraordinary achievement and innovation when it comes to creating solutions to community and business problems. With 152 applications submitted, the competition was fierce and full of many bright future leaders. In the end, these ten young leaders were specially selected by JCI members to receive this prestigious title in 2020, along with the category in which they were nominated.

The 2020 JCI Academy and Leadership Training in Fukuoka Every year, a select group of delegates hone their leadership skills at the JCI Academy. Since it was recognized as an official JCI event in Amsterdam in 1987, more than 2,500 global networkers have graduated from the JCI Academy. The JCI Academy empowers the future leaders of the organization to learn about strength, cooperation and cultural understanding. Delegates immerse themselves in the culture of their host city and discover how to be inspiring global leaders with a focus on creating lasting change.

Originally meant to be hosted in Fukuoka, Japan, the 2020 JCI Academy team took the initiative to hold its first fully online conference with delegates from 80 different countries. For a full week, delegates held many earnest discussions, completed challenges, and deepened friendships.

Despite attending a remote event, delegates were still able to immerse themselves in the nature, history and culture of Fukuoka. On the last day, to symbolize hope and solidarity, 2020 JCI Academy Director Takuichiro Yasunaga presented to the delegates a video of Fukuoka and a memorial tree planting with fireworks to celebrate the graduates.

JCI offered members the chance to participate in leadership training wherever they are located.

From regional leadership academies to sessions conducted by their Local Organization, there are plenty of opportunities for JCI members to learn from others and become better leaders to navigate a changing world.

and scenarios in which we can uplift struggling economies. By hosting a session across borders, this event recognized that rebuilding economies does not need to be an insular event.

Think Global, Buy Local | JCI Switzerland, Switzerland JCI Switzerland created an innovative program to encourage continued revenue for local businesses.

With this program, the general public could buy a gift voucher to their establishment of choice. Once this gift voucher was purchased, customers received an email with a unique code voucher so that once the lockdowns were lifted, they would already have a voucher to use the goods they’ve purchased. With this money, the merchants were able to pay the fixed costs (like the rent of their establishments, for example) to help keep them afloat during forced closures.

Online Chat #FactsNotFear | JCI Nigeria, Nigeria In a collaboration with Dr. Meshach Maina, JCI Nigeria hosted a live Twitter conversation to help spread information about the COVID-19 pandemic. As a lecturer of Virology and Immunology at the University of Maiduguri, Dr. Meshach was able to help dispel misinformation and fear that impacted many peoples’ mental health during 2020.

Cancer is a widespread disease that has likely affected all of our lives. JCI’s Tougher Than Cancer initiative aimed to advance Sustainable Development Goal 3 put forth by the United Nations, which focuses on global health and well-being. JCI members focused to create awareness around cancer prevention and continue to be strong advocates for the equal treatment of all people when it comes to cancer care. This campaign sought to empower young people with the knowledge, tools and resources to bring this important conversation to their communities. The campaign became a platform to engage young people worldwide in global dialogue and communication about cancer resources and prevention.

JCI Eko, Nigeria By focusing on Global Goal 3, good health and well-being, JCI Eko proved that together we are tougher than cancer. In the month of February, they partnered with Eko hospitals to provide free cervical cancer screening to community members.

JCI Beirut, Lebanon This project provided cancer patients with weekly organic produce so that they can eat healthy and have one less thing to worry about during their cancer battle. Vegetables were harvested and packed by The Green Van’s organic farm and then safely delivered. JCI members helped organize this event where you could either volunteer or donate to support this project.

Alexandra Robinson held a riveting speech reflecting on the reality of being a leader and staying motivated in uncertain times while Eva Dutary focused on teaching participants how to self-identify their workplace motivators and learn how to advocate for any missing motivators they might need.
