JCI and the Global Goals for Sustainable Development At the end of 2015, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)—a set of eight goals advancing global development JCI members worked to advance since their adoption in 2008—reached their deadline. In September of 2015, more than 150 world leaders gathered at the United Nations to adopt the Sustainable Development Goals. During the General Assembly at the 2015 JCI World Congress in Kanazawa, Japan, JCI’s nearly 120 National Organizations signed the Kanazawa Declaration, committing the organization to advancing these goals. Also widely known as the Global Goals for Sustainable Development, these 17 goals, with 169 targets, are the building blocks to peace and will work together to end extreme poverty, fight inequality and injustice and combat climate change by 2030. Dedicated to developing a better world, JCI members and young people globally have begun to identify the goals most relevant to their communities, take action to engage stakeholders and implement projects that provide sustainable solutions to the greatest challenges of our time.
