JCI TOYP and JCI CYEA 2011 JCI Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World (JCI TOYP) Honorees JCI TOYP serves to formally recognize young people who excel in their chosen fields and create positive change. Every year, JCI selects 10 outstanding young people under 40 who live the JCI Mission in extraordinary ways. JCI TOYP is run locally, nationally and internationally. The international ceremony takes place every year at the JCI World Congress. Marta Fidela Gladys Cruz Cerón (Bolivia), Cultural achievement Born blind, Cruz Cerón founded the Center for Counseling and Training in Special Education of the Blind and Integral to promote the socialization of blindness and provide Braille and sign language instruction. Murindabagwi Meilleur Derek (Rwanda), Personal improvement and/or accomplishment As a young genocide survivor, Murindabigwi wanted to provide a fresh start for the youth of his home country and started igihe.com, publishing Rwandan breaking news and other information to end hate ideology through freedom of expression. Dalilah Kalla (Mauritius), Humanitarian and/or voluntary leadership Dalilah Kalla was diagnosed with lupus and then founded Lupus Alert, a nonprofit organization providing moral, emotional and financial support to people living with lupus and their families. Dr. Miia Karita Kivipelto (Finland), Medical innovation After witnessing her grandmother’s battle with Alzheimer’s, Dr. Kivipelto started seeking ways to save other patients and their families from similar suffering by developing the Nordic Brain Network and increasing resources about aging and its challenges. Dr. Serge Michel N. Kodom (Togo), Humanitarian and/ or voluntary leadership Dr. Kodom provides health services for underserved communities through AIMES-AFRIQUE, a nongovernmental organization consisting of volunteer doctors and surgeons who bring free hospital services and health education to remote villages across Africa. Bongiwe Petronella Mlangeni (South Africa), Business, economic and/or entrepreneurial accomplishment Mlengani realized the rising problem of unemployment and exploitation in her community so she teamed up with Africa! Ignite, a local nonprofit using fairtrade practices to provide underprivileged artisans

the opportunity to produce items for community campaigns and projects. Safak Pavey (Turkey), Contribution to children, world peace and/or human rights A tragic train accident leaving Pavey with only one arm and one leg turned into a newfound passion for humanitarian and diplomatic work worldwide, making her a positive example for all who live with a disability. Dato Sri’ Edmund Santhara Ramanaidu (Malaysia), Business, economic and/or entrepreneurial accomplishment Dato Sri’ Santhara finished school and quickly rose to CEO of Masterskill School of Nursing and Health, transforming the school into a university with better training and in-hospital programs and improving Malaysian healthcare. Abra Tenu (Togo), Academic leadership and/or accomplishment At the age of 14, Tenu noticed that many children in her town needed support to continue their education and founded the St. Therese de l’Enfant Jesus association providing classes, supplies and activities to more than 600 adults and children. Riku-Heikki Virtanen (Finland), Contribution to children, world peace and/or human rights Diagnosed with blindness and deafness, Virtanen’s disability sparked his pursuit of a law degree to do advocacy work for nonprofit organizations that support those with physical challenges.

2011 JCI Creative Young Entrepreneur Award (JCI CYEA) JCI CYEA is designed to specifically recognize, honor and celebrate exceptional young entrepreneurs and the role of creativity in their success. 2011 Winner: Joseph Lim Joseph Lim of Malaysia co-founded his company, Global Green Synergy (GGS) in 2008. GGS is a manufacturing company that produces palm fiber for its customers and then buys back the waste to convert it into bio fuels. Lim has also implemented a green internal working environment by using energy-saving light bulbs, reducing paper usage and promoting employee carpooling. GGS also advocates environmental awareness throughout the Malaysian community through Lim’s Global Awareness Program run by GGS in local schools.
