Gillian Edwards Head Of Senior School

Welcome to the Senior School (Years 10 – 12) In the Senior School, our aim is to develop independent students who are responsible and accountable for their own behaviour and learning; with skills to equip them to meet future challenges, and a desire for knowledge and understanding that will remain with them long after they have left Pedare. Our learning pathways provide students with a variety of different opportunities within the curriculum, that can be tailored to their particular career aspirations. We aim to provide a safe, friendly and positive atmosphere that encourages and supports our students, whilst also recognising their developmental needs as they approach young adulthood. Senior School students are encouraged to develop their self- awareness as well as positive relationships with others. Our expectation is that graduates of Pedare will be well-prepared and willing to contribute to and make a difference in the wider community.

Personalised Learning

A

t Year 10, we provide a curriculum that meets the requirements of the final year of the IBMYP as well as that of the Australian Curriculum and the SACE. For this reason, the Year 10 students are organised into Home Groups separate from other year levels, with Home Group teachers who help them to focus on their Personal Project for the IBMYP and the Personal Learning Plan for SACE.

These include: • Vocational and Educational Training (VET) courses; Certificate I, II, III and Diploma, within the College, as part of the One+ Campus and with external providers. •

Cross Campus Study, whereby students can elect to study a subject not offered at Pedare.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects in a combined One+ class for students who have been identified as benefitting from extension in these areas.

Courses such as First Aid and Barista training which provide our senior students with skills to enhance their employability in part-time work.

At Year 10 we provide a curriculum that meets the requirements of the final year of the IBMYP as well as that of the Australian Curriculum and the SACE.

As well as completing the requirements of the IBMYP, Australian Curriculum and the SACE, Senior School students have the opportunity to study subjects tailored to their individual learning needs and future pathways.

Communicate, Collaborate, Create These 21st Century thinking skills adorn the windows of the new Wattle Centre which forms the centre piece of the Senior School precinct.

T

hese words also reflect the purpose of the Wattle Centre: to provide our senior students with a comfortable, modern environment in which to work as independent learners or together in small groups during their study lessons. Our students can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the Wattle Centre, which provides warmth and shelter during the colder months, including before and after school and at break times. In the warmer months, they may choose instead to sit in the Wattle Courtyard under the protection of the shade sails. In both cases, students across all three year levels, 10-12, can mingle together as they share each other’s company, whilst enjoying the wholesome food provided by the adjacent Wattle CafÊ. They may also choose to purchase a hot beverage supplied by our student baristas, who are trained as part of their Stage 1 Certificate II Kitchen Operations course. The Wattle Centre offers our senior students a unique opportunity to work and socialise in a very pleasant and welcoming environment that recognises they are in the process of transitioning from secondary school and, in a smaller way, models similar facilities to those found in many tertiary institutions.

Pedare SACE Stage 1 and Stage 2 students may apply to study any one subject Cross Campus. This means attending a subject hosted at one of the other schools. Students can make use of these additional subject opportunities when one school offers a specialised course of interest or in order to best fit a student’s desired pathway. Cross Campus study can also prepare students for the diverse environment of tertiary education. Pedare operates and schedules its own lessons and timetable to use ONE+ learning areas as required in curriculum delivery. These lessons are run by Pedare teaching staff.
