Barometers – An aid to prediction
A barometer predicts approaching weather by measuring changes in air pressure (barometric pressure). A barometer that has a high stable reading indicates good weather, while low pressure is associated with poor weather (poor is relative). Pictures of clouds, rain or sun on aneroid barometers are more decorative than factual
It’s the change that helps predict the weather so it’s the direction the needle is moving that matters.
A barometer that is falling indicates that a low pressure system is moving in, and you can expect poorer weather. It’s the difference between the high pressure and low pressure system that matters. The bigger the difference, the stronger the storm expected The smaller the difference, the less likely you are to see rain or storms
Changes will seem small so on an aneroid barometer you’ll have two hands. One will show the barometric pressure reading, and the other is a dial that you align to the pressure reading whenever you take a measurement. The manual hand is so you can quickly see which direction the needle has moved and how far between readings.
Since pressure systems last days and sometimes weeks, it can be a while before you notice any substantial difference in your readings and this only helps you predict the next 24‐48 hours or so.
Keep in mind that a barometer should be adjusted to show equivalent sea‐level pressure for where it is read Altitude makes a difference. For the altitude at which it is to be used at initial setup. Also some things will affect readings, such as proximity to heating or cooling vents, as well as use of air conditioners or humidifiers.
