ouise Fili is a distinguished book and packaging designer
from Orange, New Jersey. She was born on April 12, 1951. 2-B
Fili states in an interview that aroundthe age of 3 she remembers carving letter forms on the wallabove her bed. She taught herself calligraphy with a Speedball guide and an Osmiroid pen when she was in high school. Fili attended Skidmore College to study studio art. She would finish at the School of Visual Arts as a graphic designer. When Fili was 25 she was offered a senior designer position at Herb Lubalin to design books. She credits her time there to having a transformative effect on the development of her voice and style. Fili would join Random House as Art Director for Pantheon. She would design around 2,000 book jackets. Fili would

later meet design historian Steven Heller and the two would soon be married. Fili’s design is recognizable from the art deco and modern influences she draws upon. She is of Italian descent and takes inspiration from her family history.
