ouise Fili is a distinguished book and packaging designer

from Orange, New Jersey. She was born on April 12, 1951.

Fili states in an interview that aroundthe age of 3 she remembers carving letter forms on the wallabove her bed. She taught herself calligraphy with a Speedball guide and an Osmiroid pen when she was in high school. Fili attended Skidmore College to study studio art. She would finish at the School of Visual Arts as a graphic designer.

When Fili was 25 she was offered a senior designer position at Herb Lubalin to design books. She credits her time there to having a transformative effect on the development of her voice and style. Fili would join Random House as Art Director for Pantheon. She would design around 2,000 book jackets. Fili would

later meet design historian Steven Heller and the two would soon be married.

Fili’s design is recognizable from the art deco and modern influences she draws upon. She is of Italian descent and takes inspiration from her family history. As co-art director of Harper’s Bazaar in the ’60s, art director of The New York Times Magazine in the ’70s, and creative director overseeing the reinvention of Vanity Fair in the ’80s, Ruth Ansel not only injected the glossy publishing industry with some rock ‘n’ roll flair, she showed us how magazines, at their best, are a vital visual record, a time stamp for an entire age. “Magazines give you an idea of what it was like to be alive at a certain time,” she says.

Ansel developed a seemingly simple formula for success: work with the best people, carve out room for white space, and then get out of the way. At Bazaar she worked with Andy Warhol and with Richard Avedon from the ’60s until his death in 2004. The ’60s also saw her side by side with photographers Melvin Sokolsky, Hiro, and Diane Arbus; in the ’70s, Sebastião Salgado, Bill King, and illustrators Roger Law and Ed Sorel; then Annie Leibovitz, Herb Ritts, and Bruce Weber in the ’80s; and Tim Walker in 2012 and onward. She was awarded an AIGA award in 2016.

Errol Duplessis, was a professor and aquatics director at Hampton. He would attend Pratt institute. Arem, in 1995, would join a small staff at Market Watch, a trade magazine on spirits, wine, and beer.

In 2002, Duplessis would form his style as an art director at SPIN, a rock magazine. 2004 saw Arem tapped as times Art Director. In 2014, He would jump to apple as group director.

Arem Duplessis was first introduced to commercial art by his mother, Laurel Duplessis, a painter, and former curator of the Art and Artifacts Division of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem.

obert Greenberg, along with his brother Richard Greenberg, in 1977 formed R/GA. The company began as R/Greenberg Associates with the two brothers designing film title sequences. -----This has evolved into an international agency that is responsible for great work over the course of their tenure.

The brothers first major opportunity as a company was with the teaser and the opening film sequence for the 1978 Superman. The brothers would establish a style with there following work. The opening title sequence for Ridely Scott’s Alien used a modified futura utilizing broken letter form to instill a sense of being uneasy and foreboding.

In the film, Altered States, the title design is described as “The letters invade, becoming a lens for the scene and conveying a sense of encroachment. ----They shuffle themselves disorientingly, the man within eventually lost to text.� This technique and the use of type as a lens is used again in the titles to The Dead Zone.
