Withrow Park A new laneway suite home in Toronto's east york neighbourhood 2019-Present [Building Permit] In 2018, Toronto implemented a set of new by-laws allowing homeowners with property abutting a public laneway to create a secondary living space. This young couple asked for a high performance home that didn’t ask for a lot of space but focused on being physically comfortable.

The ground floor is partially embedded into the hill, providing privacy for the bedrooms and quick access to the new bicycle parking off the laneway.The second floor contains a lightfilled kitchen and living room, and provides easy access to the shared backyard garden.

My role was to use Sustainable’s high performance wall assemblies to create a set of IFC drawings and permit documents while also coordinating with engineering consultants and builder to create a set of working drawings we can use for municipal permits and for tendering. I also created the visuals for the client and marketing.

Intergen Home A new multi-generational home for two families in Etobicoke, Ontario 2019-Present [Design development] Intergen Home is a Passive Housetm certification-aiming residential duplex for two families of different generations. The elder family wants to provide their adult-daughter and her growing family with a home in an established neighbourhood in Etobicoke. With the rising cost of living in Toronto, many families are looking for creative solutions to prevent being ‘priced-out’ of the city. Intergenerational living is not new for most parts of the world but for Toronto, this is a relatively new concept. The layout is a ‘duplex’ with some shared spaces such as the entry and basement.

The family seeks to certify their new home as a model home with Passive House’s PHI Low Energy Certification. This requires far more robust construction assemblies and close development with the builder.

My role is to assist the lead during design development, visualization, create a set of working drawings for permit stage, tendering and construction.

Facing Page Bottom: Program Diagram of the intergenerational aspects of the project. The Garden Suite is for the elder couple in the family and the top two levels is the Main Suite for the younger family. The site was not optimal for Passive House standards as project south is blocked by their neighbour. I designed the house with an angled face to due south for optimal sun exposure.

Ravine House A new house for a young family of creatives in east york, toronto 2017-2020 [under construction] A young family of four asked Sustainable to create a new home in place of their tired bungalow near a ravine. They are very conscious of their carbon footprint and was attentive to all the ways that can reduce their environmental impact. They desired an air-tight home to reduce their energy consumption and chose finishes to suit. This home could also be considered an ‘intergenerational’ home as the walk-out basement is designed for the family’s in-laws to move in when they are ready in the future.

My role was delegated to construction drawings set of details for building permit and IFC stage. I also attended to conduct field reviews during construction to solve issues as they appeared and mitigate future ones.

Warden Hilltop Village Re-thinking the Future 2020 Awardee competition entry for Mixed-USe Category RTF Awards submission entry for the Mixed Use category with Sustainable.

I was part of the team that conceptualized the programming and design of the site and development.

The design proposal responds to the housing affordability challenge as per the design brief to think of “Architecture of the Future”. Toronto is facing pressure to increase their housing stock that is not only about quantitiy but sustainability in environment and socially responsible to a society with an aging population.

For this we chose the Warden TTC Station surface parking lot as it meets the criteria of an underutilized space near a transit hub.

Through a blend of building dense community of intergenerational housing and cross-programming, actvities, the proposed will catalyze intergenerational interaction.

The spaces provide co-working, cooperative owned businesses on the ground floor shared by the tenants of the residential upper storeys. Each residence is provided a ‘porch/front yard’ space in the open walkways to facilitate neighbourhood camaraderie.

Furniture Design Home office furniture design for a couple in toronto 2020 [complete] A couple asked for a custom home office that matched their existing mid-century inspired furniture in their small East York home. I was tasked to design a low desk with storage and bench to accommodate ‘work from home’ situation and a seating area for their beloved dog.

The project came in the nick of time as the pandemic changed the way we approach work spaces.

My role is to designed the furniture with one corner of their home in mind, with a wide window looking to their front porch on one end and ceiling soffit. I designed a work bench that can accommodate filing, a bookshelf that is tucked into the corner and desk attached with a thin drawer. The design had the top of the desk and bench flushed to a shelf on either corner.

Home Modification for Sub-Divided Homes, Hong Kong Housing Organization with DOMat Community and Architecture (2016) Kowloon, Hong Kong- DOMAT Community and Architecture is a non-profit practice that regularly recruits young designers and architects as volunteers to re-orient layouts of homes for low-income families in the Kowloon area.

These families live in ‘sub-divided’ housing apartments. ‘Sub-divided’ housing in Hong Kong is in the grey area of the law. Landlords take a typical 500 sq ft. apartment and divide it into as many as 5 separate apartments, in order to rent at rates below the market price.

The crammed living quarters make it difficult for families to provide adequate space for children to study and play within their homes.

HKU Interior Re-Design Llewelyn-Davies Asia [HK] Architects and Planners (2016) HK Island, Hong Kong- This was a renovation project for the fourth floor of the Faculty of Education in University of Hong Kong.

I was tasked with designing two schemes to show the Dean of Education and the Vice Secretary. They asked for a colourful and vibrant scheme, as well as another scheme in conservative wood veneer. The presentation was conducted in English.

I presented a slideshow and story boards to outline key areas in the office. The two renderings on the right are the break-out area and lobby space for receiving students.

While both were well received, the Dean of Education decided to go with the wood veneer scheme.

Construction drawings were drawn up for tender documents.

THESIS WORK Spaces in Transition: Making Room for Junctures in Hong Kong This thesis addresses the scarcity of civic spaces in Hong Kong by proposing impermanent interventions to meet the demands of city-organized events.

There are two cyclical events that contribute to Hong Kong’s unique character: the democratic march held every July 1st, and the informal settlement of migrant domestic workers. In the former, thousands of locals and NGOs take to the street as an expression of their civil rights. The latter event involves the weekly activities of migrant domestic workers, who gather in interstitial spaces every Sunday. Both require transitional and circulatory spaces to fully express their aspirations and maximize their potential as social occasions. The spatial-temporal aspect to these two events manifests with one occuring yearly and the other weekly.

The yearly march is a formally organized event by local activists while the other is largely informal.

Given the topology and compact built environment of Hong Kong, this thesis propose interventions on the city core which address needs for public space within the intense urbanity.

Music School A School for Dalhousie's faculty of Music (2015) The Dalhousie Music School is composed of a multi-faceted program. It requires both shared and intimate spaces. It accommodates a wide range of groups, from large public spaces for performances to small practise rooms for individual students.

The site on Robie Street and University Avenue combines public performance space (to be seen and heard) and education (gateway for a university). The students are given intimate spaces to hone their craft and shared spaces for ensemble music and performances.

The architecture of the building reacts to the need to catch attention (as a landmark and gateway to the university) and breaks the monotony of the urban fabric. The ‘facets’ of the building face and envelop the students in settings that are ideal for sound travel (no 90 degree corners). The sloping planes of the walls provide a contrast to the linear procession of University Avenue.

The trapezoid shapes and angled walls came from an observation of the current spaces used by music students.

Many of the spaces are sloped with walls and ceilings meeting at non-conforming angles.

That way, the sound can travel at an optimum pitch.
