BURGLARY BATTLE By Zoë Shackleton
Some of the damage caused at Cafe Etienne in Dewsbury town centre
News Reporter zoe@thepressnews.co.uk
A CAFE owner says he’d struggle to keep his business afloat if he’s hit again following a spate of break-ins in Dewsbury town centre. Burglars have caused around £800 in damage to Cafe Etienne, which has been raided twice in six weeks, taking two charity boxes and a small amount of money from the till on both occasions. In the latest incident police say that five people broke in. Boss Steve Seller says after having to twice pay to install secure bars and new windows, if it happened again he would have to consider his options. The 55-year-old said: “I’m tied into a lease so it’s very difficult, I can’t just leave. “But if it were to happen again to any of the big windows, I think it would put me out of business. “I’ve had to now put almost £1,000 of my own savings into the business account which I’m not going to get back because it was dam-
age, you can’t recover things like that. But how much do you throw into things? “Unless the landlords helped me financially, I’d be struggling to stay there.” Mr Seller, who has had the cafe on Wakefield Old Road for almost two years, says there has been a rise in the number of break-ins recently. Last night (Thurs) MP Paula Sherriff hosted a public meeting to address crime issues at
the Longcauseway Church in Dewsbury town centre. Dewsbury and Mirfield Inspector Chris Hughes was due to speak and answer questions at the event. “Nearly everybody I know who’s got a shop in town has been broken into,” said Mr Seller. “Michelle, who comes for a coffee from Bling Bling Boutique (hairdressers), she’s got done three times. It’s not what they steal it’s
the damage that they cause. “I don’t think it matters having CCTV, because most of them will come with hoods and put their heads down. “And when they do get caught, what do they get these days? There’s no real deterrent for them. I don’t know what the answer is. “I’ve been in Dewsbury for seven years, I’ve had no real problem, people are great, I love the town, but it does leave a nasty taste. “You can’t just keep doing it, it’s a business at the end of the day. If I lived there I’d move, it’s slightly different but you wouldn’t stay in a place that constantly got burgled.” A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “Police are investigating a burglary at a town centre cafe on Wakefield Old Road in Dewsbury. “The incident occurred between 4.30pm on March 7 and 7.10am on March 8. “It is believed five unknown people broke into the premises and stole a charity box and an amount of money from a till before making away. CCTV enquiries are being conducted in the area. “Any witnesses or anyone with information about those responsible is asked to contact the non-emergency number 101.”
