An area of 12.8 hectares off Soothill Lane, to the side and below the school, has been earmarked for housing.

Mr Dadhiwala said: “All along they (Kirklees) were stringing us along, when they knew what decision they were going to make.

“Kirklees set out five years ago that they need ‘X’ number of new houses, so we all knew this was coming.

“The only question was where are they going to go – and it turns out to be green space.”

He added of the latest project: “I think it’s out of our hands. If they (Kirklees) want

it to go ahead, then it’ll go ahead.

“As a group we’ll fight tooth and nail to save community assets but I think land is out of our control.

“I don’t think a petition or protesting will do much good.

The decision that will be made will be made from above.”

He highlighted traffic on Soothill Lane and lack of places at the school as potential objections.

And Mr Dadhiwala suggested Kirklees should improve social housing on Cardigan Close before seeking new homes elsewhere.

He said: “Those flats aren’t child-friendly. They’re only suitable for those who don’t have children.

“Why spend £20m or whatever on new properties when you could do up what you’ve already got for £20,000?”

Details delivered to residents state the land is for housing in the council’s Unitary Development Plan.

The number, type and size of homes and site layout is yet to be decided, though an assessment showed the site can take up to 404 dwellings.

It is also not clear from the documents if the housing would be for sale or rent.

Helen Bailey, for Parsons Brinckerhoff, said whether the homes would be social housing, private or a mix of both has not been decided.

She added the company would act as the agent for Kirklees Council on any planning bid.

The project is “a work in progress” and Parsons Brinckerhoff want residents to offer comment.

A spokesman for Kirklees Council said: “Planning consultants Parsons Brinckerhoff, acting on behalf of the council, are currently undertaking consultation with the public prior to the submission of an outline planning application for residential development on a site at Soothill, Batley.

“It is anticipated that the planning application will be submitted in August 2015.

“New homes are required to support economic growth and meet the needs of a growing population across the district.”

Dog walker is attacked in park A DOG WALKER suffered serious facial injuries after being assaulted in parkland in Dewsbury.

The offence was only reported to the police at the weekend but occurred in the early hours of Monday June 8.

The 26-year-old victim was walking his dog on the rugby field at Crow Nest Park between midnight and 1am when a dog attacked his pet.

As he tried to prise the animals apart he was struck to the side of the face with an unknown object, causing him to lose consciousness. He suffered serious facial injuries including a fractured eye socket and a broken cheekbone.

DC Richard Grace, of Kirklees District CID, said: “Unfortunately given the nature of this attack we don’t have any description of the suspect.

“The dog involved in the attack on the victim’s dog was a large, black, short-haired Mastiff-type and we presume this belonged to the suspect.

“Some time has passed since this assault but we are hopeful that someone may recall something from that night which could help our ongoing enquiries.

“We are also keen to speak to anyone who has seen a dog matching this description being walked around this Friday July 3, 2015 area at another time Issue No: 692 who might be able to assist with further 31 Branch Road information about the Batley dog’s owner.”

Memorial day for Abigail tops £1,000 A CELEBRATION of the life of a girl from Thornhill raised more than £1,000 last Sunday.

The event at Overthorpe Sports Club was in aid of 12-year-old Abigail Harris, who died in a hit-andrun tragedy in the Canary Islands five years ago. The club hosts an annual fun day in her memory and it gets bigger every year.

There was a bowls competition, face-painting and a hog roast while balloons were released marking what would have been Abigail’s 18th birthday.

Some 38 pairs took part in the bowls and helped raise £1,014, beating last year’s total of £700.

Seven charities including Kirkwood Hospice and Candlelighters benefited.

Even more good causes will be supported this time, though final decisions have not been made.

Abigail’s dad Tony said: “The amount of people who turned up was incredible. I can’t thank them enough.”

Frontier investigations BATLEY: Police are investigating three unrelated incidents near the Frontier last weekend. A man, 26, was taken to hospital with a head injury after he was punched outside the club at around 3.30am last Saturday.

Then another man, also 26, was in collision with a taxi as he crossed Bradford Road near Legends. He was taken to hospital with nonlife threatening injuries, believed to include concussion.

And at 10.30am last Sunday, the body of a man in his 40s was found on Bar Street.

Police are not treating the death as suspicious.

Food bank drive

■ Summer’s Fayre, an annual fundraiser in memory of two-yearold Summer Mai Rogers-Ratcliffe, who died in February 2012, takes place tomorrow (Saturday) at Thornhill Trojans ARLFC in Overthorpe Park (noon).

‘Inadequate’ care home savaged by inspectors

By Staff Reporters A CARE home in Dewsbury closed by council chiefs has been found to be inadequate across the board by inspectors.

Kirklees Council ordered residents at Oxford Grange on Oxford Road to be moved after being told of draft inspection findings.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) made an unannounced visit over three days in May. They told Kirklees of their provisional conclusion – which was only confirmed in a full report published on Tuesday.

The council acted immediately on the draft decision by moving residents to other care homes. Some staff and families, who said they had no concerns about the care of relatives, thought Kirklees acted prematurely.

But the report branded Oxford Grange inadequate under all five inspection areas. These rate care homes for their safety, effectiveness, caring, responsiveness and for being well-led.

As a result the CQC has banned owner Northfields Care Homes Ltd, which has two other care homes in Dewsbury, from operating Oxford Grange.

Problems found included: ■ Residents unsafe due to poor medicines management; ■ Not enough suitable staff on duty at all times; ■ Staff lack knowledge of how to identify or respond to risk of abuse; ■ Cleanliness and hygiene not consistently maintained; ■ Residents at risk from unsafe moving and handling practices.

The CQC’s visit was prompted by concerns raised to them about the care of residents and poor staffing levels.

Since the inspection, all residents have been moved and Oxford Grange now stands empty.

“We found many concerns around people’s care and welfare generally and people living at the home were at risk of receiving inappropriate or unsafe care.”

Debbie Westhead, deputy chief inspector of adult social care for CQC in the north, blasted the operator.

She said: “People are entitled to services which provide safe, effective, compassionate and high quality care and Northfields Care Limited has failed the residents of Oxford Grange.

“We found many concerns around people’s care and welfare generally and people living at the home were at risk of receiving inappropriate or unsafe care. It is clear the provider did not have a system to monitor the quality of the service and take the required action.

“For this reason we had no option but to remove the location from their registration.

Since these concerns were first raised we have been working closely with Kirklees Council and North Kirklees Clinical Commissioning Group. (They) have overseen the safe relocation of all residents to alternative accommodation. The home is no longer operating.”

BATLEY: Food donations which a supermarket will top up are wanted for the town’s food bank. Tesco Extra launched their charity drive yesterday (Thursday) with the help of Batley & Spen MP Jo Cox. There was an in-store treasure hunt where all the food ‘found’ was donated to the collection. The push continues until tomorrow (Saturday). Tesco will top up the amount of goods donated by 30 per cent in weight.

Batley Food Bank is based at the Town Hall annexe and helps families in need based on referrals.

£100m roads plan MIRFIELD: Nearly £100m could be spent on roads in the district over the next few years.

A £58m scheme for the Cooper Bridge junction is expected to be ready by 2019/20, subject to an appraisal study. A further £39m is earmarked for the Ravensthorpe Relief Road, for the A62 Leeds Road and A644 Huddersfield Road.

Cash, set out in Kirklees Council’s updated capital plan, will come from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s transport fund. Also in the works is £19m for improvements to the Dewsbury to Leeds corridor along the A653.

News In Brief Woman stole to pay for infertility treatment MIRFIELD: A woman stole £7,500 from her employer to pay for fertility treatment. Tammy Elizabeth Friend took the cash from the Cheque, Loan and Pawn Shop in Wakefield over five months last year.

Leeds Crown Court heard Friend, 32, of Jackroyd Lane, Mirfield, had several unsuccessful IVF treatments. Her husband said they could not afford another course.

She admitted theft and was given an eightmonth prison sentence suspended for 12 months. Friend, who has repaid £500, was ordered to pay £7,000 compensation and comply with a 50-day activity requirement.

Tattoo bloodbath DEWSBURY: A drunken woman was found covered in blood – after trying to cut a tattoo from her chest.

Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard police found Janine Green, 38, on Union Street on the night of June 11. Green, of Bunkers Lane, Batley, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly in public. She had tried to remove the name of her partner from the tattoo.

Magistrates gave her a conditional discharge but she must pay a £150 charge, £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Benefit cheat jailed BIRSTALL: A two-time benefit cheat was paid £56,000 when he failed to tell authorities his health had improved. Robert Kirk, 61, of Monk Ings Avenue, received income support, council tax and disability living allowance.

But at the same time as claiming to be unfit for work due to chronic liver disease, he was operating R Kirk Air Conditioning. During the course of his offending, Kirk was prosecuted for a similar benefit scam totalling £18,000.

Kirk, who admitted fraud and failing to notify a change in circumstances, was jailed for 12 months for a deception dating back at least eight years.

Islamic scholars brand terror attacks ‘horrific and cowardly’ ISLAMIC scholars in Batley condemned terror attacks which last week brought bloodshed to three continents.

Moulana Hashim Sacha and Mufti Mohamed Amin Pandor gave a statement on Tuesday.

They are chairman and general secretary of Rabetah Al Ulama Al Islamiyyah, which also represents mosques in Dewsbury and Huddersfield.

Attacks in Tunisia, Kuwait and France last Friday were branded “horrific” and “cowardly”.

The atrocities came after Savile Town student Talha

Asmal fled the country to become a suicide bomber in Iraq.

Their statement said: “The Islamic Scholars of Rabetah, together with other Imams in Kirklees, totally condemn all attacks on innocent people.

“We are all disgusted and sickened by violence taking place across the globe in the name of our peaceful religion, Islam.

“If the perpetrators think they are advancing the cause of Islam and Muslims, they are severely mistaken and totally misguided.”

but that terrorism is completely alien to Islam.

There was equally strong condemnation for the timing of atrocities in the holy month of Ramadhan.

It said: “The month of Ramadhan is supposed to be for inner contemplation, reflection, compassion, forgiveness and charity.”

The group, founded in 1979, state they promote peace and understanding of Islam and community cohesion.

Among the mosques they represent are the six linked to the Indian Muslim Welfare Society in Batley.

Their aims include supporting Islam as practiced

by Sunni, Hanafi and Deobandi Muslims. They said they are working with young people to explain Islam and prevent “undesirable future occurrences”.

The statement concluded: “Our thoughts, sympathies and prayers are with the victims and their families. We know that the authorities in Tunisia are doing their best to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

“If they escape in this world then Allah will hold them to account in the hereafter.”

Mosques condemn ‘deviant, oppressive and extremist’ ISIS

By David Miller TERRORISM is forbidden under Islam and perpetrators have violated its core teachings, mosque leaders in Dewsbury have stated this week.

The declaration came after Savile Town runaway Talha Asmal turned suicide bomber in Iraq.

The Dewsbury Imams and Scholars, who represent 18 of the town’s mosques, made a joint statement on Wednesday.

In it they branded the self-proclaimed Islamic State in Syria and Iraq (ISIS) a “deviant”, “oppressive” and “extremist” group.

The mosques represented include the Zakaria on Chapel Street, where Asmal was once a worshipper.

Atrocities in Tunisia, Kuwait and France last Friday were also condemned as against the teachings of the Quran.

The statement said:

Terrorism in any form is expressly forbidden in the teachings of Islam. Individuals who commit such heinous crimes against innocent and defenceless men, women and children have acted completely contrary to the core teachings of Islam.

“Islam regards all human life as sacred and inviolable. The Quran makes it clear that protection and preservation of life is paramount.”

On ISIS they said: “ISIS is an oppressive and tyrannical group which is killing innocent civilians, prisoners of war, journalists, and anyone who refuses to endorse their ideology.

“These actions are all opposed to Islamic teachings. ISIS is a deviant, extremist group and it is prohibited according to Islamic scriptures to support them.

“It is in fact an obligation upon all Muslims to actively oppose their poisonous ideology.

“We categorically condemn all actions of violence, violent extremism, killing and destroy-

ing buildings and places of worship in any circumstances – be it committed by ISIS or any other such organisation.

“This is against the teachings of Islam, which is a religion of peace, compassion and mercy.

“We call upon all the youth of Dewsbury and beyond to remain steadfast in the face of the empty claims and promises made by ISIS. “They should live a true and honest Islamic life as shown in the Quran and the sayings of Prophet Mohammed so as not to be duped into confusing falsehood with truth.

”

The Tunisia gunman was condemned and sorrow expressed for his victims and their families.

There was also an equally strong attack on regimes, such as President Assad in Syria, with a reputation for brutality.

On Assad it said: “Some of the regimes in the Middle East ... do not follow the teachings of Islam.

“This includes President Assad’s tyrannical regime in Syria, which is oppressive, unjust and brutal.

“They have committed heinous crimes and numerous atrocities against its people. We are totally against these regimes who contradict the way of Islam.”

“We call upon the youth of Dewsbury and beyond to remain steadfast in the face of empty claims and promises made by ISIS. They should live a true and honest Islamic life as shown in the Quran... so as not to be duped into confusing falsehood with truth”

School ticks all the boxes with a new name and a new look A SCHOOL in Batley will have a new name and uniform from September as its transformation continues.

Batley Business and Enterprise College will become Upper Batley High School – backed by a colourful logo and smart new attire.

The Blenheim Drive secondary is no longer receiving extra funds for its two specialisms.

Pupils and parents were asked if the current name was still appropriate – and the answer was ‘no’.

It was felt that ‘business and enterprise’ makes people think that is all the school does, while ‘college’ was associated with post16 education.

Children were asked to think of a new name and plumped for Upper Batley to reflect the school’s location.

They also designed a logo based on multi-coloured ticks arranged in a circle to symbolise the school’s forward momentum.

The marketing firm which helped was so impressed that they hired pupils to work on accounts for clients like Specsavers.

Headteacher Samantha Vickers said: “Until 2011, schools got additional funding if you had a specialism.

“That’s all gone now, so in a sense it’s a bit dated to keep the name that we have.”

The former Batley High School for Boys was branded inadequate

by Ofsted inspectors in January.

A return visit in February showed improvement and another last month is expected to show that the school is on course to be rated ‘good’.

Bump put brake on drunk driver RAVENSTHORPE: A drink driver was caught when he came to a sudden stop on a speed bump.

Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard police noticed a Citroen Relay on the traffic calming measure on New North Road on June 14.

Inside they found Michael Heeley, 43, of Bradford Road, Batley, and smelled alcohol on his breath.

He claimed to have drunk only one pint but told officers he had taken a large quantity of anti-depressants.

A breath test showed he had 71mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The limit is 35mg.

Heeley, who pleaded guilty, was banned from driving for 42 months and told to pay a £110 fine, £150 court charge, £85 costs and £20 victim surcharge.

Sherriff seeks rail talks DEWSBURY & Mirfield MP Paula Sherriff demanded a meeting with the transport secretary after a railway upgrade was shelved.

Electrification of the transPennine route would have cut journey times from Dewsbury to places like Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool.

Part of a wider £38bn scheme announced before May’s general election, it has been delayed due to funding concerns.

The Government claimed it was only told of those problems by Network Rail last week.

Miss Sherriff is not so sure and added: “It would appear Network Rail knew long ago the upgrade would be undeliverable.

“Yet the Government continued to make false promises right up to the General Election.”

As a result she asked Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin for a meeting to discuss future upgrade options.

In a letter she wrote: “Dewsbury is in desperate need of a boost to the local economy and once again Dewsbury and the north have been let down.

“My constituents deserve an explanation as to why they were misled by the Government.

“Simply passing the buck onto Network Rail will not do.

Your government talks of a ‘Northern Powerhouse’ but yet once again leaves the north starved of investment.

“My constituents deserve to know that they have not been forgotten and that proposals will be considered to invest in northern transport infrastructure during the course of this parliament.”

The only conclusion I can reach from the week’s political hand-wringing and institutional, hopeless angst, is that we are just going to put up with it. Pay the price in innocent people’s blood. Try to salve 30 families’ grief with a minute’s silence.

EANWHILE, closer to home, the overwhelming condemnation by local Muslim leaders of the atrocities in Tunisia should be welcomed.

I was struck by the harsh tone of the religious and community leaders in the stories on page four today. That is an unequivocal attack on IS and when Muslim communities take such a steadfast position, our political leadership should take note.

Instead they spend more time fretting over causing imagined offence to the sensitivities of the UK’s Muslim community, than they do planning how to tackle the greatest threat to the world since Hitler.

As such, when religious leaders from the very same faith are outraged, it should be seized upon as permission – not that I consider they need it – to take all necessary steps to put IS in its place.

We’ve had war declared on us, and laying flowers on a Tunisian beach is about as meaningful as Neville Chamberlain waving his ‘peace in our time’ sheet of paper.

How many more innocents are we willing to sacrifice before we return fire?

July 1st? Give Leeds a miss TIP for you. However much you like Leeds, there is one day of the year when you want to give it a wide berth – July 1st.

On July 1st Leeds turns into a scene from one of those disaster movies, where a million people are trying to evacuate a city in the 10 minutes before a comet, tsunami or alien spaceship arrives.

Cameron and George Osborne have, via the spineless Hammond (who was Defence Secretary until being ‘promoted’ to the Foreign Office), are systematically running our military capabilities into the ground.

Hammond has meekly accepted budget cut after cut, to the point where our navy needs to borrow French aircraft carriers, while the preferred Tory strategy for tackling foreign terrorists and hostile governments is to ring-fence the overseas aid budget.

Who needs tanks when you can backhand Mahmoud Abbas’s Palestinian authority £130 million, much of which is used to ‘employ’ convicted terrorists?

In 2013 we handed out £1billion to 20 of the most corrupt countries in the world.

I wouldn’t put the dog up in the hovel my son and four pals are being milked £1,500 a month for. And I suspect a lot of landlords are laughing all the way to the bank, because on Wednesday the Hyde Park area of Leeds looked and smelled like an African township.

HERE were plenty of pampered, middle class students among the throngs protesting against so-called ‘austerity’ in London a fortnight ago.

Left-wing media like the Mirror/Guardian/Indy got into a numbers frenzy ... there were 100,000, 150,000 no, 250,000 protestors! Britain is clearly outraged! No it isn’t. The numbers, as usual, were grossly overstated.

And again as usual there weren’t many impoverished people clamouring round Russell Brand and Charlotte Church, those famously poor people who struggle to put a loaf on the table. The protestors were all fashionably dressed and had their smartphones to record the jolly.

As for the ‘austerity’ victims whose very lives the left-wing loonies were pleading for – well, they couldn’t be arsed recording Jeremy Kyle and dragging their overweight backsides off the sofa, to go join the protest. The only ‘poverty’ in Britain is one of personal morality and of work ethic.

A NEW era begins today (Friday) for one of Dewsbury’s best-loved charities.

The Howland Centre on School Street has taken on three new staff to extend the work it does with disabled people.

Increased opening hours will allow more classes to run and for people from the wider community to join.

And a new name, Howlands, was due to be unveiled by Mayor of Kirklees Coun Paul Kane today.

The centre has been run by the Dewsbury and District League of Friendship for more than 60 years.

Disabled people across North Kirklees are supported through arts and crafts activities.

Some of their colourful work has been displayed at venues including Batley Art Gallery.

One painter, Nico Griffin, 42, of Dewsbury, was born with hydrocephalus, a brain condition which affects his sight, coordination and walking.

Through Howlands he overcame these problems to create art full of bright geometic shapes.

Manager Deborah Hall said: “We have an exciting and challenging time ahead of us.

When will our government stop surrendering to these organisations, investigate them, and act to safeguard the safety of the majority of the British people?

When will our own Muslim community come out and expose the mosques in Dewsbury that are preaching extremism?

The silence is deafening, and until they come forward they will be tarred with the same brush.

Immigration policy farce From: Alec Suchi, Bradford Dear Sir, It has become a matter of official policy to uphold the view that mass immigration has benefited the country, especially if we are “taking everything into consideration”, as brilliantly satirised by Stephen Cass, (Forum, June 26).

To contradict such a view would threaten not only the career of someone in public office, but also the employment of somebody working for a public body. The arguments cited to justify mass immigration are nothing better than self-justifying rhetoric, and can be easily refuted.

Despite this, those opposing mass immigration are forced to take a defensive position, as accusations of rascism, xenophobia, intolerance, and other charges inevitably follows.

Despite seeing the consequences of such damaging policies, over the previous 50 years, we are still taking “everything into consideration” when extolling the virtues of diversity. Will such official stupidity continue in the future, or will a semblance of sanity finally prevail?

‘Politically speaking’ A strong voice, just as I promised T HE LAST two weeks have been very difficult for everyone in the Dewsbury constituency.

The eyes of the nation’s media have been firmly upon us all but we can be proud that we showed ourselves to be the strong, resilient community that we are.

As your MP I have held many meetings and have more planned in the coming weeks to ensure that everything possible is being done to prevent the radicalisation of our young people, and I will continue to press the ministers responsible to hold them to account on this subject.

However, whilst the focus has been on these unfortunate events, it is important for you to know that I am still focused on being the voice for the whole constituency in parliament.

The opposition day debate on A&E services provided the perfect backdrop for me to deliver my maiden speech and to set out some of my priorities for the next five years.

These include speaking up for Dewsbury, Mirfield, Denby Dale and Kirkburton, the NHS, fairness and equality, and the ongoing struggle for women both in society and politics.

I spoke of the privilege it is to be the first female MP to be elected in the constituency since Ann Taylor.

Every corner of the constituency still holds great affection for Ann and I have big shoes to fill and I aspire to make her proud.

It is refreshing that 65 per cent of the new Labour intake of MPs are female but there is a lot more to do, and I look forward to contributing to that cause.

Sadly, at the time of delivering my

speech the news was unravelling of the proposed cuts to tax credits, something the Conservatives failed to mention in their pre-election campaigning.

With 8,700 families in our constituency being in receipt of tax credits, most of whom are women in work, it’s evident that more than ever we need more voices to be a champion for women’s rights.

I couldn’t pass up the chance to restate my beliefs on the National Health Service.

Our NHS should always be there to provide free healthcare at the point of need and to put patients before profit.

I spoke of my time working for a privatised health service which affirmed my fears that the health service is moving away from its founding principles.

Since being elected I have had meetings with the Mid Yorks NHS Trust and the North Kirklees Clinical Commissioning Group and these will be repeated on a regular basis. I have also completed a ward walk to see how things are on the front line of Dewsbury Hospital and to find out what the main issues are.

I can assure you that I will be keeping a watchful eye on everything that is going on and will continue my fight to retain vital services at our local hospital.

On the local economy, I spoke with pride of Dewsbury’s rich manufacturing industry, but I also mentioned our town centre which is in much need of regeneration.

I welcomed the fact that Dewsbury has been earmarked by the government as an enterprise zone and I will continue to push in the coming weeks to see this become a reality.

Unfortunately within a few hours of my speech the government would deliver a blow to our town through shelving the planned upgrade to the trans-Pennine rail route, a promise the Conservatives made right up to being elected.

This prompted me to write to Transport Secretary to express disappointment and demand some answers.

The government talks of a ‘Northern Powerhouse’ but is failing to deliver at the first hurdle.

If the first couple of months are anything to go by then it is clear it is going to be a tough five years for northern towns under this government.

The sliproads and Chain Bar roundabout at junction 26 were down to one lane for seven nights from Monday. A diversion is in place.

New platform and more parking in £6m-plus rail station revamp

By Steve Martyn A MULTI-MILLION pound masterplan for Mirfield Railway Station was announced this week.

More than 50 people attended a meeting at the Navigation Tavern, where transport chiefs detailed their proposals.

The plan includes more parking, a new platform and main entrance, a waiting room and ticket office. The first two of these would cost £5m, which would come from the West Yorkshire

Combined Autho-rity transport fund. Both would be made possible by buying land occupied by a building supplies firm – but may take up to six years to deliver.

Adding a lift or ramp for disabled and baby buggy access would cost up to £1m.

This would come from the Department for Transport’s national ‘access for all’ budget.

A waiting room, also taking up to six years, would cost £500,000 and be funded partly by train firms Northern Rail and Grand Central.

The companies will find £15,000 between them over the next two years for a spruce-up.

This includes painting and gardening – some of it to be done by volunteers – and new signs and passenger information screens.

Northern Rail will stump up a further £15,000 for a new ticket vending machine.

The need for investment is spelled out in the report, which states passenger numbers rose from 120,000 in 2002/03 to 420,000 last year.

A catalogue of problems,

including subsidence and parking issues on Station Road, were detailed.

Coun Martyn Bolt (Con, Mirfield) said: “We have one of the busiest stations in the area and the only one in Kirklees with a direct link to London.

“One of the problems caused by an increase in passenger numbers is onstreet parking.

“The masterplan seeks to alleviate that, along with providing step-free access to the platforms and secure and comfortable waiting areas.”

THE MAYOR of Mirfield has denied a ‘plot’ to oust a councillor who was unable to take his seat.

Coun Vivien Lees-Hamilton said Michael Hutchinson had only himself to blame for the blunder.

Mr Hutchinson went to Canada to see his terminallyill brother after his election victory.

All councillors have to be sworn in by the date of a body’s annual general meeting (AGM), in this case May 19.

Carl Kingsley, mitigating, said De Brito was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder following his experiences as a child.

Town council clerk Lisa Staggs asked Kirklees for Mr Hutchinson’s details so an invite to the AGM could be sent. They only had his postal address, though a phone number and email remain listed on the Labour Party’s

Dewsbury branch website.

Coun Lees-Hamilton, having not heard from Mr Hutchinson, told Coun Bunton to get word to him.

Mr Hutchinson, a former town and Kirklees councillor, did not make contact until May 31, after his return from Canada.

Coun Lees-Hamilton said: “No mention was made by Coun Bunton of the nature of Mr Hutchinson’s visit to Canada.

“Nor did Coun Bunton at the AGM place an apology from Mr Hutchinson for not attending or raise any question of the deferral of his declaration.”

Council chiefs accused of ‘political spite’

AN ELECTION winner unable to take his seat accused Mirfield Town Council chiefs of hypocrisy and “political spite”.

Michael Hutchinson went to Canada without making sure he could be sworn in at or before the council’s annual general meeting (AGM). He lost his Battyeford seat – but claimed a Tory was treated differently four years ago.

Mr Hutchinson said: “All they needed to do for me to take up my seat was to ask me to make my declaration at a later date.

“They allowed three of their own absentees, one of whom had not sent an apology to the council, to declare late after the 2011 elections.”

OFFICIALS from a local government body have backed Mirfield Town Council’s decision on Michael Hutchinson.

The elected Labour candidate was not able to make his declaration by the date of the council’s annual general meeting on May 19.

It created a “casual vacancy” which could be filled by a co-opted member or with a byelection.

The Yorkshire Local Councils Association said the decision not to allow Mr Hutchinson to take his seat was correct.

He called on the Tories, who he said had “acted in haste”, not to field a candidate in any

“If others did the same it would ensure justice was achieved. The ball is firmly in their court.”

He claimed not to have had contact details for town council clerk Lisa Staggs – though her phone and email addresses are on the council website.

“Without the clerk’s e-mail address, I could not contact the council while I was abroad,” he said.

“I wrote to the clerk within a week of my return home and hand-delivered my letter.

“Any suggestion that I could or should have contacted the clerk at an earlier date is nonsense.”

“It is unclear what else the council could have done to make contact with the individual ahead of the annual meeting of the town council.

“Moreover the individual has to take responsibility for not contacting the town council until three weeks after the election.”

It added Mr Hutchinson can apply to be co-opted onto the council or seek a by-election.

The statement concluded: “It is open to him to make a complaint about the actions of the council through the procedure set out in its complaints policy.”

The Office of National Statistics showed there were 431,020 people here last summer – up 2,741 on mid-2013.

More than half the rise – 1,912 – was down to births but 1,354 were attributed to international migration.

DEWSBURY: A group hopes to raise £10,000 for a new memorial to soldiers who have died in conflicts.

The New Friends of Dewsbury Cemetery want two granite headstones which will list the names of all the town’s fallen heroes.

Various fundraisers, including a bagpack at Sainsbury’s tomorrow (Saturday) are to be held.

Wartime weekend CLECKHEATON: The North’s largest 1940s re-enactment and military vehicle show starts today (Friday).

There will be battle simulations in purpose-built trenches, a Spitfire flypast and 1940s-themed entertainment.

A HEADTEACHER in Birstall welcomed a temporary reprieve for his school’s crossing patrol.

Tim Scargill, of Windmill Primary, was one of three heads told vacancies for lollipop ladies would not be filled.

Lydgate in Batley and Headlands in Liversedge were the other two schools affected.

Council funding of the crossing patrols across Kirklees is due to end next April under budget cuts agreed in February.

At Windmill Primary on Windmill Lane, Birstall, the lollipop lady is due to retire this month.

Parents fear lives could be put at risk when their children try to cross busy Upper Batley Lane.

But after Batley & Spen MP Jo Cox intervened, all three schools will get new lollipop ladies on fixedterm contracts until April 2016.

Mr Scargill said: “I’m pleased the council made this decision. It gives us

some extra breathing space.” Mrs Cox said government funding cuts leave Kirklees in a tough spot.

She said: “When Kirklees talks about having its budget cut by the Government to the tune of £152m per year, this is exactly what it means.

“This is the human face of what Government cuts mean for communities such as ours.”

But a reprieve until April allows time to think of how else the service could be funded.

Mrs Cox added: “I will continue to work with the council, schools and parents to find a sustainable way to ensure local children can cross the road safely.”

A council spokesman said school crossing patrols will not immediately stop next April.

She added: “The council will continue to work with the police and other partners to develop a new community safety function within Kirklees.

“In the meantime we will be recruiting to vacancies on a fixed-term contract.”

Michael’s a winner in the long run A VETERAN athlete from Dewsbury is gearing up for yet another fundraising run for local charities.

Michael Luby, 60, above, is in training for his 15th Great North Run and this time will be raising money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Action For Children in Dewsbury.

Michael has been fundraising for more than 15 years and has run dozens of marathons and shorter distance races for many good causes.

He has completed the London marathon seven times as well as running in New York.

The retired caretaker, who lives in Machells Mill in Dewsbury town centre, will tackle the famous Great North Run’s 13.6mile course around Newcastle, Gateshead and South Shields on Sunday, September 13.

Even more fun at the gala as town hall hosts performances A PACKED line-up of entertainment has been announced for Ossett’s 26th annual gala next Saturday.

Cheerleaders, dance troupes, youth theatre performances and morris dancers are among the acts confirmed for the July 11 town centre event, which is now being organised by local community group Building Ossett Better (BOB).

The gala starts at 10am and runs through until about 4pm, with entertainment throughout the day.

For the first time organisers will be using the interior of Ossett Town Hall as part of the gala.

In previous years a flower show has been held in the main hall, but next Saturday it will play host to musical performances from local bands, stalls will be set out and the building’s renowned organ will be playing.

Michelle Poole, of the Building Ossett Better group, said: “It’s all about Ossett – we’ve tried to keep the attractions, artists and exhibitors as local as possible.

“There will be more to see and it will be more spread out, so visitors can get round and take it all in. The gala’s had a bit of an upgrade this year and we can’t wait for next Saturday.”

Pop Idol Gareth Gates forced to quit musical GARETH GATES will no longer be appearing in The Three Little Pigs musical set to open in the West End in August. Gates, runner-up in the first series of Pop Idol, has withdrawn from the show citing a vocal injury sustained last summer. He told me: “I’m not able to take part in this fantastic show. And I just hope my fans understand.. I will be back soon though.”

DESPITE his tell-all book not being a huge success, it appears that it’s not put publishers off giving chat show host Graham Norton more money. Graham tells me that he is half-way through writing his first-ever novel. “It’s tough, but I have got over 30,000 words right now, so it’s shaping up a bit more thankfully,” he teases...

CELEBRATED film star Diana Dors once had her own chat show for regional channel Southern in the 1970s. She had many star names of the day on the show, and now plans are in place for its first DVD release after demands from dedicated fans.

IT appears that Aled Jones is not popular at weekends after his stint on breakfast TV show Daybreak. His spin-off chat show, shown on weekend mornings, has a string of celebrity guests, but it’s failed to raise the ratings, and bosses are now seriously thinking about its future.

ITV has announced it’s commissioned a six-part Prime Suspect prequel series, Tennison. One name in the frame is soon-to-be ex-Downton Abbey actress Joanne Froggett, who is their number one choice for the role.

PAUL NICHOLAS may have joined the EastEnders cast as Kathy’s husband Gavin, but the one-time TV sex symbol tells me: “I keep hearing this, and I am thinking I wish they would drop it as I am 70 next year, and people are going to be so disappointed when I finally get on the screen.”

WHO'S Doing The Dishes has been re-commissioned for a second series. The ITV cooking game show hosted by Brian McFadden will return for another 30-episode run later this year, ITV Daytime has announced.

STEPHEN MANGAN will star as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in another ITV drama featuring the famous author. Stephen, currently appearing in the comedy Episodes with Matt Le Blanc, tells me: “I think we are all fascinated with Sir Arthur, after all, his creation in Sherlock is spoken about every day.”

NICOLE SCHERZINGER was ‘dropped by her record label’ after her second album struggles to make impact on UK chart, a source told me. “It’s simple, if she had stayed on the show they may have ploughed on, but once that went, then the writing was on the wall...”

CHANNEL 4 has confirmed it’s bringing back Chris Evans’ classic 1990s series TFI Friday in the autumn. Chris told me at the BBC last week: “I am so happy, as it was a risk and many thought it would not work, but we proved them wrong.”

WITH TFI now making its way back to the screen BBC bosses are being urged to revamp and bring back the Top of the Pops brand. It currently only airs once a year now at Christmas, but fans are demanding a full-time return and BBC boss Tony Hall also appears keen.

EASTENDERS actress Barbara Windsor tells me she does not get star-struck, apart from once when she met Hollywood legend Paul Newman. “It was 1964 and I was performing in Oh What A Lovely War on stage, and he came to see the show, he was everything I hoped he would be and more, but yes, I got very shy with that meeting,” she giggled.

PAUL HOLLYWOOD, Gareth Malone and Jane Seymour are among the celebrities featuring in the new series of hit BBC1 genealogy show Who Do You Think You Are? The others include Jerry Hall, Sir Derek Jacobi, Anne Reid, and actress Frances De La Tour.

CLASSIC gameshow Bullseye is the subject of a new Sky Vision Productions documentary for free-to-air channel Challenge.

BRASS AND SWING FOR MUSIC LOVERS AT CRICKET CLUB MUSIC-LOVERS will be treated to a brass band and swing evening at Hopton Mills Cricket Club next weekend.

The concert takes place at the picturesque Woodbottom ground in Lower Hopton on Sunday July 12 from 4pm and features the Meltham and Meltham Mills Brass Band, along with swing singer Richard Daniels.

Rice-Webber classic returns THE EXPLOSIVE new production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ground-breaking rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar is set to open in Leeds next week.

Jesus Christ Superstar exploded onto the musical scene in 1971 as a rock opera, telling the story of the last seven days in the life of Jesus through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.

Museums’ World War One day TWO LOCAL museums are turning back the clock on Sunday so people can experience what it was like to serve their country in World War One. Oakwell Hall in Birstall and nearby Red House Museum in Gomersal are hosting a re-enactment event featuring the Lancashire Hussars.

As well as the chance to see what life was like in a military camp during the war, visitors will be encouraged to ‘sign up’ and take part in a recruitment march.

‘Your Country Needs You’ takes place between 1pm and 4.30pm, although a military camp at Oakwell Hall will be open to visitors from 10am.

The Lancashire Hussars re-enactment group recreate Squadron D of the Lancashire Hussars Territorial Yeomanry as they existed in 1914, including wearing genuine uniforms.

They will be bringing six horses to Oakwell, where they will set up camp and a recruiting station.

Their portrayal of camp life and active service could even include the interrogation of a German

prisoner-of-war.

Between 1pm and 1.30pm, a recruitment drive, copying the voluntary enrolment of men and young boys during World War One, will encourage visitors to ‘sign up’.

Successful recruits will have to pass a physical test before being marched to Red House, accompanied by four mounted soldiers.

The token force left to guard the Oakwell camp will include women ‘horse-breakers’ whose job it will be to look after the two remaining horses.

At Red House there will be music and war poems from 1pm until the troops and recruits arrive from Oakwell.

Once there, the recruits will be put through the process of completing attestation forms.

At around 3.30pm, the new recruits will be marched back to Oakwell for drill practice before being allowed to stand down as the event begins to wind down.

Present during the afternoon will be members of the Project Bugle group who research the

impact of the war on the Batley and Birstall area, producing monthly dispatches on war events and casualties compiled from original newspapers.

There will also be historians present and a display of war medals.

The event has been organised by the Friends of Oakwell Country Park and the Friends of Red House Museum, with funding from the Batley and Spen District Committee.

‘Your Country Needs You’ is free to attend but normal museum admission prices apply at both sites. ● TO COMPLEMENT ‘Your Country Needs You’, Red House Museum will be hosting a garden party on Saturday July 11.

There will be live music and entertainment from local singers Lindsey Moore and James Woolford, and the Oakenshaw Community Choir.

Other activities and attractions include a raffle, tombola, giant garden games, jewellery, local arts and crafts, books, clothes and

accessories, bric-a-brac, storytelling, plants, refreshments, cakes, classic cars and vintage motorcycles.

The fun begins at noon when Coun Lisa Holmes, the president of the Friends of Red House, will be opening the event.

Entry to the Garden Party, museum grounds, shop and foyer area is free, but there is a small admission charge to access the rest of the museum. ● THERE is still time to get tickets for Chapterhouse Theatre Company’s open-air adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s ‘The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes’.

A murder will be solved and treasure can be found in the walled garden of Oakwell Hall on Thursday July 9.

The garden is open from 6pm for viewing and picnics, and the action starts at 7.30pm.

Farewell concert for music centre

Funny tale of Yorkshire lad Billy Liar brought to life

CLECKHEATON Music Centre will hold a farewell concert at Whitcliffe Mount School on Saturday July 11.

Due to council budget cuts the music centre will close following the concert, and there will no longer be a Saturday music school in North Kirklees.

The nearest music centre for Batley and Spen pupils will be Batley Music Centre, which operates on Thursday evenings and is based in the Salvation Army Building on Branch Road.

The final Whitcliffe Mount concert starts at 6.30pm.

BATLEY-BASED Phoenix Players and St Matthew's Theatrical Society in Rastrick are bringing the classic play ‘Billy Liar’ to life.

Following the success of last year’s production ‘The Ghost Train’, the joint am-dram society is back to tell the story of William Fisher, a working Yorkshire lad who lives in a world of his own.

The comedy, set in 1960, shows Fisher getting bored with his job and spending much of his time in a fantasy dream world of life in the big city as a comedy writer.

He also happens to have three girlfriends – and to make things worse he has proposed to two of them. And so the uproar begins!

OSSETT enjoyed a six-wicket win at second-placed Townville last week to set up an interesting return tomorrow at Queens Terrace.

That win lifted Ossett to fifth in the table and only seven points adrift of Townville, but another setback for the reigning champions would provide a welcome boost for current leaders Methley.

At Townville the Ossett skipper John Sadler turned in a match-winning performance with a 3-53 bowling stint, followed by an unbeaten 65 in an unbroken 91-run unbroken stand for the fifth wicket with Javed Umarji (51 not out).

Methley extended their lead with a three-wicket win over Carlton but they had a late scare, losing five wickets for 44 after the dismissals of Marcus Walmsley (61) and Luke Patel (51), and will hope to put that right in the return game this week at Carlton.

Birstall continued their slide with a nine-wicket defeat at Wakefield Thornes after mustering only 92 in 34 overs.

Eric Austin’s unbeaten 22 and a late flurry from Saif ur Rehman (28) provided the only resistance, and they’ll surely not relish the possibility of more of the same at Leeds Road tomorrow.

Mirfield Parish Cavaliers posted a respectable 228-3 in their game at Altofts.

David Blakeley (88) and Nazar Hussain (59 not out) scored half-centuries, but a tight finish ensued with Altoft left needing 22 for victory and Parish needing just one more wicket for maximum points.

The return looks like being another keen contest.

Buttershaw St Paul’s are facing a tough ask to pull clear of the relegation places on current form.

They put up a good fight before going down by 30 runs at Wrenthorpe and it is hard to imagine them having any more luck in tomorrow’s game at Wrenthorpe.

There was another good performance from Paul Carroll with a top-scoring 72

for Buttershaw, and teenager Kevin McDermott took 5-58, but a century from Wrenthorpe skipper Neil Bourke was their undoing.

Hopton Mills lead the way in the Championship after a 113-run win over Northowram Fields gave them a five-point lead over Azaad, who head a group of four separated by only four points.

Ashley Mackereth (72) got Hopton off to a good start and though Glenn Morrison top-scored for Northowram his 33 scarcely made a dent in the target of 278 to win.

Skipper Richard Myers is sure to be wanting more of the same at promotion rivals Wakefield St Michaels tomorrow, but a win over Azaad in their last game will have given St Michaels a boost.

Liversedge are still hovering around the promotion zone after a six-wicket win at Oulton and they now entertain second-bottom East Ardsley.

In Division One bottom club Crossbank Methodists will be hoping to finally get a first win under their belts when they entertain third-bottom Mirfield.

BRADFORD CRICKET LEAGUE

Gomersal double blow SECOND Division Bradford League side Gomersal could not have had a worse preparation for Sunday’s Heavy Woollen Cup quarter-final at home to First Division Pudsey Congs, with the winners away to Woodlands – the other Bradford League side left in the competition.

Disappointing defeats at Bowling Old Lane and Bankfoot last week have severely hit any promotion hopes that skipper Graham Hilton may have been harbouring.

Another defeat tomorrow, at home to second-placed Scholes, will effectively signal the end of any meaningful season.

Only an amazing turnaround of fortunes would see Hilton’s men close the gap on Morley and Scholes at the top and, at the same time, see off the challenge of Baildon, Bowling Old Lane and Yeadon.

Last weekend began with a disappointing 16-run defeat at Old Lane, with only Ben Hyde (39), Joel Pollard (5-54) and young wicket keeper Harvey Lockwood (35), making any impression on the game.

Sunday saw an even more deflating defeat when they were bowled out for 99 at Bankfoot, chasing 131.

This was a game Gomersal almost had sown up, as the home side slumped to 86-9, but Hisain

Ahmad (68) led a last-wicket stand of 45 after James Russell had earlier taken 5-40.

Gomersal, with an already lengthy tail, never recovered from losing their first three wickets for just 12 runs.

Pudsey Congs, though not in the same class as Matthew Doidge’s five-time First Division champions (2000-2004) are, nevertheless, still a very strong side on their day and with determination enough to pull off a one-wicket win at Undercliffe in their last game in difficult circumstances.

In addition, Congs saw off the challenge of Hanging Heaton and neighbours Pudsey St Lawrence to win the league’s T20 competition last week.

Scholes are just nine points behind Morley in the Second Division title race after their 135-run win over Bowling Old Lane on Sunday.

Atif Zaidi (62) and Yasir Ali (66) did the damage with the bat, while Ali (4-22) and skipper James Stansfield, with 5-15 off 5.5 overs, put paid to the Old Lane batsmen.

It is looking like a very tough weekend ahead for Gomersal.

In the First Division Pudsey St Lawrence lost their unbeaten record when they went down by seven wickets at home to East Bierley.

James Ford (69) and Mark Gill (57) made half-centuries, but they stay 24 points clear of second-placed Woodlands who lost at New Farnley after an unbeaten James Middlebrook century for the winners.

Hanging Heaton moved into third place with a five-wicket win over Saltaire, and Cleckheaton are fourth following an encouraging win over Bradford and Bingley that featured a top-scoring 50 from Mally Nicholson.

However, Cleckheaton go into this week’s game at Pudsey Congs 43 points behind the leaders and that third title in a row looking ever more unlikely.

Hanging Heaton are at home to New Farnley, but all eyes this week will be on Woodlands’ game at home to leaders Pudsey St Lawrence where a win for the home side is essential if the chasing pack are to retain an interest in the title.

Outstanding juniors honoured OVERTHORPE Sports held the second of their junior football presentations last Friday when Leo Jones of the U9s and James Fagelman of the U11s jointly received the Jeno Trophy for their efforts in the 2014-15 season.

It has been decided that the trophy will be presented to a player from each competitive junior team

at the club.

The pair join Nathan Hawker of the U13s in becoming the first recipients of the trophy.

At the same event Lewis Richardson of Overthorpe U9s and Ryan Mitchell (U11s) were joint winners of the Alan Wood Award, given to support youngsters for a year in sport with anything they may need to assist

them to achieve their aims.

Alan Wood was a former rugby league professional and popular landlord at the Flatt Top pub in Thornhill, who for many years raised money for charitable causes.

Grandson Scott plays for Thornhill Trojans, who set up a fund to sponsor young sportspeople to help with anything they may need in their chosen sport.

HECKMONDWIKE Cycle Speedway Club travelled to Manchester for their next fixture in the Northern Fours and junior league.

Heckmondwike got off to a good start – but that didn’t last long. The team made a few errors, resulting in two riders being excluded in races, losing valuable points, with one falling and not finishing their race.

Heckmondwike need to try and gain their third-place standing from last year and keep hold of valuable points.

JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE

Hooker Berry shines for Celtic 14s DEWSBURY CELTIC U14S travelled away to Lindley Swifts, having been narrowly defeated the previous week at home by the Huddersfield outfit.

Celtic were looking to settle some scores having missed out on the points despite being the better side on the day.

Celtic looked sharp and enthusiastic from the kick-off and enjoyed some good attacking sets in the opening five minutes.

Ryan Birch went close when he crossed the Lindley line, only to be denied when adjudged to be held up and tackled in goal. From the quick tap Lindley attacked from deep in their own half and added an opening score against the initial run of play.

Celtic were undeterred and on eight minutes Ryan Birch crossed again for a try when he exploited a gap on the right of the Swifts’ sliding defence to draw level. Charlie Heaton added the extras – and it was advantage to the green and whites.

Celtic went on defensive duties and neutralised successive Lindley attacks before going close again on 20 minutes following some sublime handling and creative rugby which ended in a dropped ball.

In the last seconds of the half however, Lindley hoisted a high bomb to the corner on the last, scrambling over the line for a converted try despite the attentions of Niall McKinnell in defence.

The green and whites came out in the second period with increased intensity and desire, forcing Lindley to make errors. Liam Metcalf went over for a try in the opening minutes after a strong carry to the line. Heaton goaled.

Eight minutes into the half and the Swifts’ increasing frustration boiled over before an ugly exchange off the ball saw Conor Appleyard and a Lindley player dispatched to the bin.

Celtic continued to contain the Swifts and push forward in attack with inventiveness and intensity. Prop Jacob Carr barged over from short range after Lindley conceded a penalty 10 metres out, turning in the tackle to plant the ball over the whitewash.

Heaton converted again with 10 minutes remaining.

Alex Wightman came tantalisingly close but was brought down short by some desperate Lindley defence.

Lindley went over in the corner for a consolation try on the last play of the

Jack Broadbent blasted through the Stanningley defense for a fine try.

Billy Jowett tagged on the goal.

Moor kept up their attacking barrage in the second half, with Finlay Bruce and Shaquell Ahmed making inroads into Stanningley territory, resulting in Jack Broadbent going in for a try from close range.

Stanningley reacted and, despite some good defending by George Hirst, Shaquell Ahmed, and a great cover tackle by full-back Dominic Young, the Leeds side got back in front.

Far from looking demoralised, the visitors produced some good play and scored two converted tries, but the enthusiasm of the junior maroons shone through, and after some dangerous attacks Brad Martin got over, taking several defenders with him in the process.

The goal kick from wide out was struck sweetly by Billy Jowitt to grab a draw for Dewsbury Moor.

Dewsbury Celtic U-14s in action game, leaving a well-deserved and hard-fought victory to the green and whites.

Celtic man-of-the-match was awarded to hooker Cameron Berry for his excellent distribution at half-back and his tackling rate in defence.

Lindley Swifts’ man-of-the-match went to Charlie Heaton for an industrious and intelligent game at scrum-half.

WHAT a great advertisement for junior rugby league the game between Dewsbury Moor and Stanningley U14s proved to be.

Both sides served up some eye-catching rugby in an end-to-end game, and a drawn game was a fair result.

The junior maroons were the first to strike after Jacob Thewliss made useful ground. Ben Markland went over for the opener and Billy Jowitt goaled.

But the slightly bigger Leeds side laid their marker down and scored two tries, one of which was goaled.

But Moor, with second-rower Brad Martin leading from the front and scrum-half Billy Jowett proving to be a handful, regained the lead.

From 40 yards out, the well-built

THORNHILL TROJANS U12S travelled to Whinmoor on Saturday and claimed two points to stay top of the league.

Defence was key, with flanks covered well with Asim Collomosse, Ben Hunter and Dillon Kilgallonshaw all working hard. Josh Stanley and Noah Ellis played some good rugby, following the game well.

Trojans forwards Tom Darley, Scott Naylor, Jake Buckley and Thomas Hiscocks drove the ball well making good ground, with Zak Harrod crossing the line, followed by magic moment winner Dylan Cooper.

Brandon Hargreaves timed his runs well to enable him to score two fine tries.

Kurt Hodgson received opposition man-of-the-match with an outstanding all-round game. Ben Pritchard stole the show, converting two tries and receiving a trio of awards – top tackler, parents’ player, and man-of-the-match.

DEWSBURY MOOR U12S, sporting their new kit, came up against a bigger team from Castleford in Lock Lane.

But the Moor lads showed a great deal of character and did their sponsor proud by battling until the final whistle.

Moor had their moments and Lock Lane had to pull off good defending as Callum Sykes and Kalum Widdop went

close to scoring.

Also putting in good attacking runs were Aiden Askin and team captain Jayden Yarrow, after good half-back play by Josh Topps and Wes Bruings.

The defending of Sam Fozzard and Harvey Cole was top drawer as they knocked over much bigger opponents.

The player of the match and parents’ award went to Keiron Haigh who was excellent throughout. The magic moment award went to Fraiser Cass and opposition award was won by Louie Creaser. Jake Redmond, James Lister, Harry Yates, Dylan Harpin, Josh Oldrieve and Connor Emerson all played well in a hard game.

With only nine players available Thornhill Trojan U10s Warriors had to dig deep against a big physical Lock Lane side.

Connor Hickling led the way with an outstanding performance in both attack and defence. He picked up the parents’ player, man-of-the-match and opposition player awards, topped the tackle count and added a converted try.

Relative newcomer Oliver Llewelyn battled hard throughout and was a well-deserve 100 per cent effort winner.

Scott Walker took magic moment for an impressive try and effective tackling.

Bailey Lee converted and was top tackler award winner for some textbook defence. Henri Wood gave a reliable performance at acting half, Felix Ellis defended consistently, Kye Hodgson distributed the ball well and Kyle Lister supported throughout.

ONCE again a very important player for Birstall U7s was the powerful Jack Kirkaldy, who as well as putting together 17 tackles also helped his team with two very important tries in the

first game and was awarded the parents’ player of the match.

The magic moment came from Jack Pickles, who as well as scoring two tries was able to chip into the opposition’s half on the fifth tackle, chase his own kick and complete the tackle to put Drighlington under some real pressure.

It was a real team effort from Birstall and both Sam Whiteley and Dylan Wailes were consistently making good yards against a much larger Drighlington side.

The Vic were in danger of being outmuscled, but some outstanding tackling from Harley Trapps kept the opposition at bay and earnt him the top tackler award.

Another player who was involved in the hard work was Alfie Watson, who put in nine tackles and was rewarded with the 100 per cent effort award.

There was another fantastic performance from Max Grinhaff, who as well as 19 tackles also got over for six tries to help his team in all areas of the game.

This was also the case for the alwaysimpressive Harrison Stevens who made 14 tackles and scored four tries.

It was a set of very good games punctuated by some very strong performances from visitors Drighlington, with special mentions for Jack Schofield and Thomas Kidger who never stopped running.

AN EVER-DEVELOPING Shaw Cross U7s showed great team spirit against Lock Lane.

The opposition noticed a massive improvement and found the Sharks, with their fast pace, more of a challenge this time. It was Shaw Cross’s defensive play that ensured a narrow victory for Lock Lane.

Opposition man of the match went to Seb Jeffers for his strength and fast pace in attack.

Coaches’ man of the match went to Riley Flynn who was strong in defence, Dillan Charlton for showing great skill and Kaiden Mullins for a good all-round performance.

Great skill and support came from Teddy Dawson, Isaac Redgwick, Bailey Woods, Phoebe Wilson, Ben Tranter, Harvey Cavanagh, Alfie Law, Charlie Tilford, Casey Hirst, Edan Gleadhill, Jacob Stevenson, Lennon Smith, Ethan Brereton, Charlee Raby, Eviee Raby and Francis Appleyard.

Pre-season training is an uphill task for Cleck boys CLECKHEATON RUFC have boosted their pre-season training regime with a fitness session on the steep inclines at Bradford Bulls’ Odsal stadium.

The National League Three North side’s new coach, Pete Seabourne, is a former Bradford RL player and is a friend of current Bulls head coach James Lowes, who agreed to let the RU side use the facilities.

Seabourne's father, Barry, was also the Bradford coach in the 1980s and played for Leeds and Great Britain.

Cleckheaton kick off their new league season with a home game against Firwood Waterloo on Saturday September 5.

The event takes place on Friday July 17 and is a very popular sporting and social occasion which raises funds for the club.

DESPITE a valiant attempt at a second-half comeback, Thornhill Trojans ran out of time and never recovered from a sloppy first-half showing.

The Trojans trailed 18-0 at the interval but showed remarkable fighting spirit to score three second-half tries.

But really it was all too little too late for the home side and they left themselves with too much to do in the second half.

Drighlington capitalised on several Thornhill errors in the opening exchanges.

Eventually a run around on the last tackle from Drighlington ended with full-back Tom Moorby going over for a try. Josh Milner converted.

As well as errors, Thornhill also failed to win the support of referee Tony Martin.

After several decisions against Thornhill, Danny Ratcliffe was deemed to have spoken out of turn too often and was sent to the sin bin.

It was while Thornhill were down to 12 men that Drighlington scored their second try of the game. Centre Kevin Doyle beat two Thornhill defenders by running between them.

He then sprinted away and went around Thornhill’s full-back to go over for a try which Josh Milner converted.

The situation then became worse for Thornhill when Milner kicked forward and regathered to score a try. The kick totally caught Thornhill off-guard. Milner converted his own try and Thornhill now had a large task on their hands.

Rather than give in, Thornhill put up a remarkable fight in the second half. This

resulted in a very tense period, with Thornhill threatening to pull off the most unlikely of comebacks.

At the heart of the recovery was man-of-the-match Luke Haigh with his impressive go-forward play.

There was also significant influence from the substitutes’ bench in the shape of Scott Dyson and Jason Firth.

Both were amongst a number of senior players having a run-out for the first team due to absence of a number of regulars.

Thornhill’s second-half revival was given a kick-start with the sin-binning of Drighlington’s Ben Kitchinman for a professional foul.

The extra man advantage proved crucial as Thornhill’s game was given a lift.

Danny Ratcliffe sent out a wonderful pass to the wing.

The ball was collected by Sam Ratcliffe and he sprinted 40 metres down the wing to score

an unconverted try. Thornhill continued to apply the pressure as the second half wore on.

With the tryline within reach Luke Haigh charged over from close range.

Sam Ratcliffe converted and Thornhill were finally rocking.

With play now on the last tackle Danny Ratcliffe flipped the ball backwards into the path of Liam Morley, who in turn sent out a pass to Jason Firth.

Firth unpicked what was left of the Drighlington defence and went over for a try which was unconverted.

Thornhill continued to battle, but in conceding a penalty two minutes from time presented Josh Milner with the opportunity to kick a goal and secure the victory.

The revival was good for Thornhill’s supporters while it was on.

But, in the end Thornhill never gave themselves any real chance after a slow start to the game.

BIRSTALL VICTORIA got their first away win of the season, with an excellent all-round performance at Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks.

The defensive line held strong throughout the game, led superbly by second-row Gavin Davis and centre Jonny Parrish.

This allowed hooker Brendan Sheridan, scrum-half Tony Aubrey and stand-off Ste Suddards to deliver a masterclass in attacking rugby league.

It was Sheridan’s quick runs from dummy-half that gave Birstall the early lead.

Centre Braden Hunter showed great pace to collect Sheridan’s pass and score in the corner on 17 minutes.

Hunter scored his second of the game on 28 minutes, after full-back Ashley Tomlinson returned a Sheffield high ball and linked well with Aubrey.

by Sheridan on 33 minutes, with another run from dummy-half, for a half-time score of 0–20.

With only three second-half minutes gone, quick passing from Sheridan and Suddards saw Hunter break the Sheffield line again, and skipping round the full-back with ease he completed his hat-trick.

A MOMENT of madness from Shaun Ainscough finally killed off a brave Batley challenge as the Bulls went top of the Kingstone Press Championship for the first time.

Former Bradford back Ainscough was initially sin-binned after lashing out from a ruck in the 65th minute, but the yellow card turned quickly to red for comments made to referee Jamie Bloem as he left the field.

The Bulls, who had laboured for long periods to improve their 20-10 lead, scored three tries in the last 14 minutes to seal their 17th consecutive league win.

John Kear’s Bulldogs had given as good as they got for much of an error-strewn game, but their seventh straight defeat and 12th in the last 13 games leaves them in deeper trouble than ever near the foot of the table.

“I can’t fault their attitude which was exemplified by some

him from retreating to the defensive line and Shaun knocked his hand away, which the referee penalised him for.

“Shaun then said something, which he shouldn’t have, and off he went.”

The Bulldogs, helped by an early penalty, struck first when Cain Southernwood’s kick to

the corner found Alex Brown out-jumping his opposite number before reaching out to touch down.

The Bulls hit back swiftly when Jay Pitts pounced on an awkwardly bouncing Danny Addy kick and the first of Ryan Shaw’s three goals from seven attempts – albeit he struck the upright twice – levelled the score.

Not for the first time recently, the Bulls struggled to get any early fluency as the Bulldogs fronted up enthusiastically.

But three tries in eight minutes – from James Mendieka and a brace from Adam Henry – helped Bradford to a 20-6 lead.

Wayne Reittie grabbed a try for battling Batley before the break and, as completions became a rarity, there was no addition to the scoreboard for the next half an hour.

Ainscough’s sending-off paved the way for three more Bulls tries – from Danny Williams and two from Matty Blythe – in the final 15 minutes – all down the channel which he vacated.

Alex Rowe, making his 200th career appearance, claimed a further consolation for the Bulldogs.

at The Cross Grounds A DANNY CRABTREE hat-trick of tries helped Dewsbury Celtic to a hard-earned win at Underbank Rangers where Josh Knowles took the man-of-the-match award.

It was the proverbial game of two halves as Rangers led at half-time, but Celtic took the spoils.

Alex Chatterton gave Rangers a

15th-minute lead with a try, but Celtic replied through one from Anthony Dunford. Chatterton added a second, with another from Luke Nelmes four minutes from half-time. Kris Harrop landed one conversion.

Celtic didn’t trouble the scoreboard until the 53rd minute, but then it was a flurry of tries, the first from Crabtree.

He added his second 10 minutes later, complimented by a Pat Foulstone conversion and a penalty, before completing his treble in the final minute.

at Leeds Road NORMANTON remain in the hunt for promotion after coming back from a 10-6 half-time deficit to win 22-16 at Shaw Cross Sharks.

The Sharks started well enough, pressing in the early stages, and it took a great short pass from John Rourke to open up the Normanton defence.

Adam Masson burst clear and rounded the full-back for a fine try.

Johnson’s conversion went narrowly wide, but the Sharks then scored again when quick hands from Masson and Robbie Byatt found Aiden Kay free out wide.

He sprinted clear from 40 metres to put the Sharks further ahead, and a superb touchline conversion from Will Poching made it 10-0.

The Knights forwards were working hard and a clever cut-out pass from Mulachy put Alexander through from close range to score their first points.

Mulachy added the extras to make it 10-6 at the break.

Normanton were first to score in the second half when good hands put Evans through for the first of his brace.

Mulachy converted to make it 10-12, but it took only five minutes for the Sharks to hit back when a pin-point Jordan Anderson kick was followed up by Will Poching to touch down under the posts.

Johnson converted and at this stage the Sharks looked the stronger but were frustrated by some of the decisions which kept the visitors in good field position. The pressure told and they went ahead in controversial circumstances when Wilson crossed wide out.

The conversion attempt was given despite the Sharks arguing that the ball went wide.

At 16-18 it was still anyone’s game but a lost ball in the tackle saw the Knights storm away and Evans scored an unconverted try to seal the game.

Despite the loss the Sharks had performed well and probably lost the game by their failure to convert some good attacking play early on.

Good performances came from Matty Byatt, Jack Gledhill, Ross Roebuck and Tom Rogers, with halves Will Poching and Jordan Anderson working hard.

They now have a free and visit Milford the following week hoping for a return to winning ways.

at Leeds Road SHAW CROSS SHARKS A got their second win on the bounce to stay in touch of top spot in Yorkshire Men’s League Division Two. It was a very tight first half dominated by the forwards, with all the work done in the middle of the park. Both defences stood firm until a barnstorming run five minutes before half-time from Richard Piper and good vision from the ruck as Sam Bastow passed to Jamie Searby on the last with a great kick and chase to the corner.

Jake Townsend collected and turned two defenders who went high in the tackle to open the scoring just before half time, with Alex Whittaker converting to make it 6-0.

The second half was all about keeping control at the ruck through Sam Bastow.

His perfectly-timed pass set up Jake Townsend for his brace 10 minutes into the second half in the corner after good yards from Zac parkinson and Thomas Stuckey.

After that the Normanton heads dropped and Richard Piper took advantage by taking three defenders with him and barged over the line.

Sam Bastow went on to tease the Normanton side for the rest of the game.

His jinking runs from half-back and defence splitting passing set up Ryan Chalkley to run straight through the defence under the posts. He converted his own try.

Five minutes before the end Richard Piper got his brace after good work from player coach James Collins who had just come off the bench to drive his team forward. Alex Whittaker converted to finish the match at 26-0.

CRUCIAL CLASH LOOMS FOR ‘DOGS

BATLEY BULLDOGS face a vital home game against Doncaster on Sunday, with John Kear’s side desperate to end their eight-match losing run.

The Bulldogs, who are secondbottom of the Championship table, take on the winless Dons who have lost their last 23 matches.

With four games remaining until the competition splits into the ‘Super Eights’, Batley are a point behind Workington Town and two adrift of Hunslet Hawks in ninth.

Kear’s side last won on on May 10, recording a 23-10 victory away at Workington.

Since then they’ve gone on to lose seven straight league games and a Challenge Cup clash at Widnes Vikings.

Last week’s performance at former Super League giants Bradford Bulls showed signs of encouragement, despite the 3416 scoreline at Odsal.

“I can’t fault their attitude which was exemplified by some of the scramble defence which defused some dangerous situations in the first half and we played some good rugby as well,” said coach Kear.

This week’s opponents Doncaster’s last success was a 39-18 victory at home to Halifax on August 31 last year.

Meanwhile, the Mount Pleasant club hope to be able to unveil their new digital scoreboard at Sunday’s game.

The new facility still needs to be fully set up so it will not be used as the official scoreboard at the Doncaster clash, but it will hopefully be in position behind the Glen Tomlinson Stand showing some of its functions for fans to observe.

With club sponsors Morley Waste Traders contributing a large percentage of the funding and supporters also chipping in thanks to a sponsored bike ride to the Summer Bash in Blackpool, club officials say they are also going to buy speakers at extra cost to improve the scoreboard further.

The Bulldogs hope to have it fully operational in time for the upcoming Hunslet game.

• Second-rower Tom Thackeray has joined Swinton on a onemonth loan.

The Bulldogs agreed to let the 22-year-old play with the Lions in a bid to get more game time.

FORMER Leeds United captain Jonny Howson recently checked out the new Footgolf course at Woodkirk Valley Country Club.

The hybrid sport which combines soccer and golf is growing fast, and there are now over 100 courses in the UK. The aim of the game is to get round the six-hole course in the lowest number of ‘strokes’ possible using a size five football and specially-designed oversized holes.

Morley-born Howson, who was a wedding guest at the venue, will line up in the Premier League this season for Norwich after joining the Canaries in a £2million move in January 2012.

“We have two 4G five-a-side pitches here which are always busy, but Footgolf has attracted a whole new audience and it is proving to be popular with friends and families of all ages and abilities,” said James Dyson, who runs the venture.

DEWSBURY RAMS have announced details for their upcoming summer sports camp for young people.

The camp will run between August 4-7 (10am to 3pm) on the pitch at the Tetley’s Stadium. Costing £40, attendees will be coached and take part in rounders, hockey, cricket, football, tennis and rugby.

“These camps have proven very popular over the last couple of years and I’m sure this year’s camps will be equally well attended,” said assistant Rams coach Damian Gibson.

“We always strive to create an enjoyable and worthwhile environment for kids of all abilities and levels of experience.

“And hopefully the kids will find it interesting to try a new sport.”

Young season ticket-holders will receive a point towards a voucher to spend in the club shop for each day they attend.

Children should bring their own packed lunch or snack and are asked to arrive dressed for training. Football/rugby boots are optional.
