IN COLD BLOOD MP JO COX SHOT AND STABBED TO DEATH ON BIRSTALL STREET – WHOLE NATION IN SHOCK BATLEY and Spen Labour MP Jo Cox was killed in a brutal daylight attack in Birstall that has shocked the nation. West Yorkshire Police acting chief constable Dee Collins said Mrs Cox, 41 was pronounced dead at 1.48pm yesterday (Thurs). She added a 77-year-old man also suffered non-life threatening injuries in the attack. It followed a shooting and stabbing incident on Market Street, outside Birstall Library, just before 1pm. A suspect was arrested and weapons seized, with a full police investigation is under way. “Clearly this enquiry is at an early stage,” she said. “So we can make no further comment as to the motive.” But she said the police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident. Witnesses saw a man struggling with Mrs Cox before shooting her several times, including kneeling over her and shooting her in the face or head. He also used what was described as a hunting knife to stab Mrs Cox repeatedly and kick her while she was prostrate on the ground. As stunned members of the public went to intervene, the man waved the knife at them and stabbed one in the stomach, before fleeing the scene. Clarke Rothwell, who owns
the nearby Priestley’s Café Bar, was standing across the road outside the Sandwich & Co shop, and pursued the suspect in his van after the incident. Mr Rothwell described hearing a sound first that he said was “more like a popping noise, more like a balloon bursting than a gunshot”. According to some witnesses Mrs Cox may have intervened in an argument between two men before the gun was pulled out and the first shot was fired. Mr Rothwell told The Press: “There was an older man wearing a white baseball cap and a grey bomber jacket and when we looked across he was wrestling with a young woman. “As we approached we could see that he had what looked more like a sawn-off old musket than a normal shotgun or gun. “The end of it was about four inches wide. “I saw him shoot her three
times. The third time he knelt over her and shot her in the head or face. “He also had a knife, it was about a foot long and looked like a hunting knife. “He was stabbing her all over, it must have been about six times. I don’t know how anyone could survive an attack like that. “People were in shock, screaming, but we went towards him and he was swinging the knife around. One guy went for him and the man stabbed him in the stomach. “We were trying to get hold of him, but then he just took off down Market Street, turned left across the Tesco Express and then down Union Street. “I ran and got my van and set off trying to find him. He ditched his cap and his jacket and seemed to be heading over in the direction of Brownhill Road. “I drove around and around looking for him but I couldn’t
find him.” Police later arrested a man on a residential street in Birstall. He was named locally as Tommy Mair, of Lowood Lane, and was described as “a loner”. Mr Rothwell said the man was shouting something barely coherent about “Up Britain, or Britain something” during the frenzied attack. “I have to say that the man didn’t look like he was all there,” he added. Anne Thompson, chairman of the Birstall Chamber of Trade, said: “It’s just dreadful. There are no words.” Fighting back tears near the police cordon on Market Place yesterday (Thurs) she added: “All I can say is she was trying so hard as our MP.” A witness, who did not want to be named, said the gun he saw appeared to be unusual. He said of the suspect: “He
