Poole’s Cavern The magnificent underground scenery of the Peak District.

Known as the ‘First Wonder of the Peak’ after an early travel guide published in 1630, Poole’s Cavern became a popular attraction for wealthy visitors and even royalty. In 1853 the cavern was improved for Victorian visitors by the Duke of Devonshire with paved walkways and gas lighting. Back above ground take a stroll through Buxton Country Park woodlands to the hilltop viewpoint of Solomon’s Temple with spectacular peakland views. Or, for the more adventurous, take a tree top swing through the woodlands on Go Ape’s high wire adventure course.

Our visitor centre includes the Café@thecavern with a wide range of delicious produce, including daily specials, light snacks and fair trade coffee. The visitor centre and café is dog friendly, with canine treats available too.

Investigate the exhibition and hands on archaeology area or browse through the rock and gift shop with beautiful gemstones, jewellery and fossil samples from around the world. We also stock a wide range of local produce from preserves to chutneys, handmade soap and books, maps and guides of the region.

entrally situated in the beautiful Peak National Park, we have on display a carefully selected range of quality gifts, toiletries, greetings cards, toys, books and much more. We constantly strive to find new products for our customers, keeping the shop looking fresh and allowing our staff to create wonderful displays, usually based on the seasons.

It's been 35 years since The Derbyshire Craft Centre opened its doors. When we found it in 1978, the building was derelict and has since been renovated and expanded over the years. Originally built by corn merchants, the building served multiple functions. The ground floor was run as a general store which provided everything the locals and farming community needed, from pickles and pies to baskets and brooms. The top two floors were mainly used to store the corn and hang cured meats from hooks in the ceiling.

Home cooking is available at the Eating House, where morning coffee, breakfast, lunch and afternoon teas are served indoors or outdoors.

e have been able to purchase six splendid, museum quality, showcases and are now able to display never (well, hardly ever) seen before items, a miscellany of medical items, pills potions and prescriptions.

H Summer in the Peaks and Dales is the first full colour magazine from the Peak Advertiser, based in Bakewell where we recently celebrated our 30th anniversary.

With the assistance of this magazine, our writers and advertisers aim to help you enjoy your stay and lay down memories of a summer to remember.

To make the best of your time with us, we have hotels and accommodation to suit all pockets and preferences, along with friendly restaurants, tearooms and takeaways. We also boast some of the most attractive market towns in the country, with shops to match, and can recommend delectable local specialities from world-famous puddings to farm produce and awardwinning beers and ice cream.

Our Country Shows and colourful customs promise something for everyone, with an abundance of attractions throughout the summer, some unique and a few downright weird. If your family is animal crackers you can track down herds of deer, llamas and alpacas, birds of prey – and big fat trout. We have country parks and town parks, plus peaceful sanctuaries for the likes of water birds, donkeys and otters.

Generations of artists have taken inspiration from this part of the country. Our magnificent stately homes are world famous and, like our all-weather show caves, have been impressing famous visitors for centuries. Wrote Sir Arthur Conan Doyle with reference to the landscape around Castleton: ‘All this country is hollow. Could you strike it with some gigantic hammer it would boom like a drum...’

addon Hall, one of Derbyshire’s most historic houses, has an exciting programme of special events for this year and also new summer late night opening.

Summer is one of the best times to enjoy Haddon Hall and its wonderful gardens and, for the first time, visitors will be able to take full advantage of this time of year with extended opening hours. Special late night opening takes place on Thursdays during June and July when the Hall and gardens will remain open until 8pm with last admissions at 7.15pm. The gift shop and restaurant will also be open late for visitors to make the most of the extra few hours at Haddon.

Full access to the garden including private terraces takes place during June and July and on Fridays in May, August and September, weather permitting.

The 2013 events programme at Haddon includes appearances by the popular Tudor Group, giving visitors a unique insight into life in Tudor times; Proms in the Garden on July 13th and local choir Renaissance Voices make appearances on July 21st and September 22nd.

Later in the year there will be spooky Halloween fun for families and children from Saturday October 26th to Monday October 28th and those brave enough and aged over 16 can join in the scary promenade performances though the house on the evenings of October 31st and November 1th.

Haddon Hall opens for Christmas from December 4th to 15th allowing visitors to see the Hall beautifully decorated using Tudor traditions and greenery from the Estate, with a contemporary twist. The Tudor Group will make an appearance during the Christmas opening period and local bands and choirs will provide seasonal music and entertainment.

Back above ground, our scenery is unmatched, with vast areas of open access land and thousands of miles of footpaths. En route, keep an eye open for prehistoric stone circles and burial mounds, Iron Age hillforts, Roman paving, Norman stonework, centuries-old guide stoops, village pinfolds, humpbacked packhorse bridges, historic old mills – and plague graves. Oh, and water which turns objects to stone.

You just can’t miss our famous drystone walls, snaking up hill and down dale. Do take time to stride along our bracing top-ofthe-world gritstone ‘edges’; to dip your toes in our streams; even cross a river or two without getting your feet wet – providing you keep your balance!

Our picture-postcard villages reveal many an unlikely secret or monument, especially in their churches. And we’ll let you into a secret: legend has it that a hoard of royal gold awaits discovery in this part of the world… but our lips are sealed! As for an easier challenge, we have pubs with names to really make you scratch your heads; try offering a prize to whoever spots the strangest inn sign during your stay.

Whatever you discover in our lovely Peaks and Dales, we wish you the best summer ever and we hope to see you again.

T

here is nowhere to match the Peaks and Dales in summertime. We even have the seaside – well we did have, with fossils and sharks’ teeth to prove it … All will be revealed at the National Stone Centre, Wirksworth. The displays and fossil shop are under cover, whilst a legstretching outdoor trail is packed with geological and botanical interest.

Higgledy-piggledy Wirksworth is an ancient lead mining capital and in 1983 was awarded the Europa Nostra Medal conservation award.

The town has a Tuesday market, while Bakewell sets out its stalls on Monday, Ashbourne on Thursday and Saturday; Matlock holds indoor markets on Tuesday and Friday.

Their wonders include a bottomless pit, underground village, fairyland grotto and a pillar of our famously beautiful Blue John, a rare translucent mineral displayed in Castleton Museum. The village even has a King, who in late May rides through the village on horseback beneath a gigantic riot of flowers.

Royalty and noblemen came to hunt bear, boar and deer in the Royal Forest of the Peak but poachers suffered unspeakable punishments in the castle dungeons. Hidden in the walls of the great keep is a very old (retired) lavatory – a simple affair of a hole and a chute.

Castleton is overlooked by mighty Mam Tor, the ‘shivering mountain’ of legend – a spectacular place for picnics and for flying kites and model aircraft. Mam Tor shook and slid until its road collapsed. See whether you can spot the cats’ eyes embedded in topsy-turvy tarmac.

Distant views stretch towards the Upper Derwent Reservoirs, which drowned two villages and where the Dambuster Squadron practised dropping those famous ‘bouncing bombs’.

CAVERN

T

reak Cliff Cavern is a genuine wonder in the heart of the Peak District. Treak Cliff Hill is the only place in the world where Blue John Stone naturally occurs. The mineral Blue John Stone is a unique banded form of Fluorspar. It is believed it was originally given its name from the French “bleu et jaune” – the “blue and yellow” stone. It

hand tools to reach the Blue John Stone deposits inside the hill. You will see veins of Blue John Stone across the cave roof and “The Pillar” – the largest piece ever found. Your guide will point out fossils in the limestone rock which formed the hillside above you 330 million years ago. The guided tour descends even deeper into the hill

Treak Cliff Cavern continues to mine, process and manufacture ornamental items and jewellery from Blue John Stone today. As well as Blue John Stone, we also have some of the finest stalactites in the Peak District. Your guide will explain how miners in the 1750s constructed a tunnel using only

T

he Richard Whittlestone Wildlife Gallery is to be found in the village of Pilsley on the glorious Chatsworth Estate. A former farm building with mellow stone and exposed beams, it has been converted into a fabulous gallery which shows off Richard’s work perfectly. As always , there is a comprehensive selection of fine original paintings, limited edition prints and greetings cards.

Born in 1963, Richard began painting at the age of five and sold his first picture when thirteen, with his first exhibition coming a year later. Working mainly in acrylics, he turned professional in 1988 when he made the Peak District his home. His love of nature comes

across in his beautifully detailed wildlife paintings and all his works carry his trademark, a tiny fly – but it takes a keen eye to spot it!

Richard’s paintings hang in Castle Howard, Woburn Abbey and Chatsworth House. Besides showing work in his own gallery here in the Peak District, Richard exhibits in Norfolk, Scotland and London and is regularly commissioned by the R.S.P.B. to produce paintings for their Christmas cards.

BAKEWELL farmers’ markets

D

erbyshire Dales District Council's multi award-winning Bakewell Farmers’ Market is the second largest in the country and a massive success story.

It is based mainly under cover at the District Council's Agricultural Business Centre in the heart of Bakewell, voted recently as the second best town in Britain by The Times newspaper.

Generally held on the last Saturday of every month from 9am to 2pm, Bakewell Farmers' Market is dedicated to encouraging and maintaining environmental sustainability, so most stallholders come from within a 30 mile radius of Bakewell, though some speciality producers trading in foods such as smoked mackerel are allowed to attend from up to 100 miles away.

While there are some crafts, most of the stalls are dedicated to food and drink, with old favourites like real ales, wines, mushrooms, large vegetable stalls, rare breeds of pork, buffalo meat, ice cream, bread, jams and preserves. Look out too for fresh trout, Turkish food, locally grown chilli products, sweet and savoury muffins, soups, goat's meat, granola and locally milled flour.

When the Farmers' Markets in Bakewell started in 2000, there were just 28 producers. This number has expanded gradually over the years to more than 75 stalls today, a number bettered only by Winchester.

Now a spectacular event on the Derbyshire Dales and Peak District calendar, the market celebrated its 10th birthday in 2010 by welcoming its 500,000th visitor.

or twenty five years, Dame Judi Dench and myself have presided over Freshfields The Actors’ Donkey Sanctuary in Peak Forest.

We have both tried to act as professional as we can and give as much of our individual time and attention to assisting John and Annie Stirling in their devoted efforts to rescue

sick, abandoned, abused and cruelly neglected donkeys, and so far, over twenty five years, they have both rescued and homed 627 donkeys.

I like to believe Judy and I have been hands on and not just figureheads and we are reassuringly told we have certainly been there when required and we both love the place so much. To John and Annie’s credit, Baz had his 51st birthday in May and Bergerac is

Our work with special needs children has also grown in leaps and bounds in twenty years and we now welcome over 2,000 children a year for therapeutic days out with the donkeys, an exercise which both the children and the donkeys

love. We always say ‘Freshfields’ is a place ‘where children and donkeys share a trust’.

We welcome visitors from Wednesday to Sunday every week between 21st March and 26th November. Even though I say it myself ‘The Actors Donkey Village’ is something we are very proud of and we would love you to share the experience with us.

am Tor is favoured by The Dark Skies movement (www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ darkskies), so gear up for a magical night you will never forget. For doers rather than watchers, Derbyshire and Lancashire Gliding Club is only a wing-beat away at Hucklow, offering introductory flying lessons and more.

Incidentally, you are now in the Dark Peak as opposed to the White Peak, the difference being gritstone versus limestone, as seen in our famous drystone walls. Many miles of wall stretch towards the magnificent Kinder plateau, crossed by a section of the long-distance Pennine Way. Kinder is a graveyard of WW2 aircraft so naturally has its ghosts, not to mention a mermaid’s pool. In fact we have a mermaid that you can actually see. rom springtime into late summer, starting with Tissington on Ascension Day (this year Thursday 9 May), many villages dress their wells and springs with stunning tableaux of flowers in thanksgiving for fresh water. At Rowsley you can watch Caudwell’s water-powered flour mill in action (flour on sale, naturally).

The cobbled mill yard offers tearooms, a Craft Gallery and Shop, plus a cluster of craft workshops.

Rowsley has yet more: where was once a bustling railway station, welcoming royal visitors to Chatsworth, is now the extensive Peak Village shopping centre.

From Rowsley you could trek or drive up to the Nine Ladies stone circle on Stanton Moor, supposedly a group of dancers and their fiddler turned to stone for dancing on the Sabbath. Closer access is from Birchover or Stanton in Peak. The massive outcrop of Robin Hood’s Stride stands a few miles away. And a pat on the back if you find the nearby hermit’s cave.

Cromford has the equally browsable Scarthin Books, almost on the doorstep of Arkwright’s worldfamous Cromford Mill. The canal towpath, with its promise of kingfishers and water voles, runs past High Peak Junction workshops and the Leawood Pumphouse.

arsington Water is well known for its stunning scenery and exceptional views and, with a wealth of great things to do, it makes for the perfect day out.

clothing, cosmetics, greetings cards, Cottage Delights and gift confectionery.

Around the site can be found the children’s play area and ‘Driftwood’ and ‘Reefknot’ Kiosks where you can get a refreshing or warming drink, a snack or treat yourself to an ice cream.

Tittesworth offers a wealth of walks for all abilities which make the most of the stunning scenery.

Throughout the year the ‘What’s On’ guide offers a variety of events for all the family from Jazz Afternoons and Easter Trails to Hanging Basket Demonstrations.

here is no other pastime quite exhilarating as flying a plane and you’re just one step away.

All it takes is a visit to Sheffield Aero Club for the best bird’s eye view possible.

Used as a RAF base in the Second World War, Sheffield Aero Club has expanded from a small flying club to now having over 300 members.

Private Pilot’s Licence training is where Sheffield Aero Club excels. You will need a minimum of 44 hours of flight training. From the outset, you will learn how to operate the aircraft safely. The club is surrounded by airfields, meaning you’ll never be far from places to practise.

Once you’re fully qualified, you will still receive full support from the instructors and have the option of hiring out an aircraft to fly in luxury to your chosen destination, whether that’s

in the UK or even Europe. Some members have even joined together to buy their own aircraft. Flyers as young as 16 have gained their Private Pilot’s Licence, going on to work as Pilots or competing in aerobatic displays.

“Flying is a great adventure hobby”, says John Kelsall of Sheffield Aero Club. “It provides a real sense of adventure and satisfaction that as a pilot you have been responsible for the safety and planning of the flight.”

There’s also the possibility of a half or full hour long flight at the club with experienced instructors, where you will even have the chance to take control of the aircraft yourself - you might even fly over your house! The air experience is the perfect introduction to flying, making it an ideal gift, and also helps to build confidence in the air.

Sheffield Aero Club is an active club with a great social side, attracting members of all ages. There’s the fully licensed Skyways Bar and Restaurant with a number of events held throughout the year.

BLUE JOHN CAVERN

T

he Blue John Cavern is world famous. It is home to eight of the fourteen veins of Blue John Stone, a beautiful and ornamental fluorspar. The mineral was first found centuries ago and is still being mined to this day.

The cavern is over 300 feet deep and its beauty can be explored through its various caves, such as the Waterfall Cavern and the Grand

Crystallised Cavern. Trek deeper into the cavern to Lord Mulgrave’s Dining Room, learn about where his Lordship entertained miners, and where fine veins of Blue John can be seen in their natural state in the limestone.

Travel down 245 steps into the largest cavern in the area and enjoy a whole new underground experience.

Matlock Bath Aquarium and Exhibitions

L

ocated in the centre of Matlock Bath is a fascinating and unique collection of displays and exhibitions.

As you climb the old Victorian stairs that years ago led to the famous hydro pool, you have no idea of what awaits you on your visit to The Matlock Bath Aquarium and Exhibitions. The nautical themed display cases and artifacts are just a taste of things to come. When you turn right at the top of the stairs you are faced with a huge glass cabinet holding some amazing gem stones, fossils and samples of various minerals; further to the right is a second cabinet with an equally impressive collection. Sandwiched between these is the only remaining ‘Petrifying Well’ in Matlock Bath.

Mineral rich water from a thermal spring some 2000ft below ground is sprayed onto articles which over the years have turned to stone during

the petrifying process. In Victorian days these petrified items were sold as curios to day trippers, but today you can see over 100 of them in this viewing area.

As you head into the Aquarium you enter a world of calm and tranquility, but watch out for those piranhas on your right and the puffer fish in front of you. Look! Look!

There are ‘Nemo’ and ‘Dory’; these are not the cartoon characters but the real thing swimming in and out of the rocks. And what are in these two enormous tanks? Wow, they are huge, as the giant gouramis come to the front of the tank to greet you.

There are all sorts of fish in here, prehistoric looking gars, fish that jump out of the water onto the floating logs, and don’t miss the big terrapin tank over there.

Time to move outside to the thermal pool. Once a hive of activity for Victorian bathers, it now is home

‘‘ Absolutely fascinating!’’ to the famous collection of mirror, common and koi carp. With the old metal girders still spanning the pool you get a feeling of just how grand this place was. Here you can feed the fish as they all swim towards you.

Heading inside, you get a grand view of the old building and the mural painted on the walls, and who is that at the top of the next stairs? It’s the model of the old gentleman inviting you into the hologram gallery. This gallery, which has just undergone an extensive refurbishment, holds one of the largest collections of holograms in Europe. See how laser technology and science work together to produce amazing images that move and change in front of you as you gently stroll from one to another. Did

larm bells were ringing in my ears. I woke up with a start, the sun bursting through the curtains, warming the face, dancing on my hooded eyelids, disturbing my nocturnal dreams. I reached out, fumbling for the source of the noise. I drew the clock closer to my face trying to read the dial that danced before my eyes. “Damn” I thought.

“It’s only 6 o’clock. There’ll be no-one about. It’s not time to get up yet” Now anyone who knows the writer would tell you this is not the normal response to being woken up at 6 am. Usually, the offending timepiece would have been sent flying across the room followed closely by a tirade of abuse and a plea for “just another few minutes” This however was no ordinary day. This was day three of my gliding holiday course .... and I was hooked.

My course was being run by The Derbyshire and Lancashire Gliding Club at their airfield at Camphill.

Named after the iron age enclosure at the south end of our field, Camphill has been the home of The Gliding Club since 1935. The airfield was formed from the fields of Camphill Farm and our clubhouse was once the farmhouse. It is now a listed building.

The site is famous in the history of gliding. It was one of only a handful of centres for early gliding in the UK. Most of glidings’ pioneers were at one time members or flew at Camphill. Many National and Regional meets were held here. In 1954, the site hosted the World Gliding Championships. In more recent years the club has played host to the annual Vintage Glider Rally. For one glorious week each year, the skies over Great Hucklow are labelled with multi-coloured wooden gliders of yesteryear.

Lesson scheme. It also runs 5-day residential courses designed to get the absolute beginner into the air and flying an aircraft fast. It is the proud boast of the club that one of it’s more notable achievements was to teach a deaf person to fly. He went on to join the club and is now one of our most proficient solo pilots.

athersage Swimming Pool opened in 1936 as part of the King George V Memorial Field and was made possible as the result of a generous donation from Mr. George Herbert Lawrence, a Sheffield manufacturer of razor blades. The area includes tennis courts, a bandstand, playing field, a sandpit, and of course the 30m by 12m pool.

The pool will be open for Night Swims from 7:30pm - 9:30 pm on the 3rd Friday of every month throughout the season.

The proposed new "Hathersage Community Leisure Space" will replace the old veranda and provide a new entrance with improved disability access.

Open Gardens Open Garden days showcase a magical Peak District home and wedding venue.

W

hen the Manchester industrialist and art collector Henry McConnel visited Cressbrook to purchase a mill, he didn’t expect to fall in love with the spectacular beauty of its Wye Valley location.

For that matter, when he commissioned ecclesiastical architect, Thomas Johnson of Lichfield, to build a Tudor-style home for him, with stunning views of Water-cum-Jolly and the surrounding countryside, he probably didn’t imagine that hundreds of blushing brides, nervous grooms and wedding guests would be happily roaming his house and gardens in the years to come.

This lovely Derbyshire home and surrounding cottages have been the subject of a painstaking restoration over many years by their owner Bobby Hull-Bailey since the late 1970’s and

the gardens have been recreated following the plans of their original Victorian designer, Edward Kemp.

The gardens are open to visitors from Spring Bank Holiday to August

THE ECCLESBOURNE VALLEY RAILWAY

ith its headquarters in the fine old Peak District market town of Wirksworth, the Ecclesboume Valley line, at nine miles, is Derbyshire's longest heritage railway. The line runs through some of the most pleasant scenery in the White Peak, from its joint station with the main line at Duffield, though Wirksworth, to its

verlooking the duck pond in Hartington, the Old Cheese Shop has a well-deserved reputation for selling quality local and national cheeses. There is also a good selection of locally produced beers and English wines to complement.

The owners are extremely committed to the survival of traditional cheese-making and are partners in the new Hartington Creamery, which makes its own cheese. They have very strong ties

WELL DRESSINGS A Celebration of Water

A

ppreciation for fresh water holds firm in this part of the world; dry summers were especially hard on our limestone villages into the mid1900’s, with wells and springs often reduced to a drip.

So we have good reason to express gratitude for water, of such purity that the wells of Tissington are traditionally credited with protecting villagers from the devastations of the Black Death. Tissington is the first Peakland well dressing which takes place in early May. It is equally possible that the custom originated in Celtic earth worship with floral tributes paid to water spirits. Even the Romans set up shrines at certain water sources; you can see a collection of Roman votive offerings in Buxton Museum and Art Gallery.

As time passed, wells and springs across the region came to be decorated with flowers and greenery as a form of thanksgiving. This lovely tradition continues to uphold a true community effort from spring through to autumn, the dressings being left in place for about a week. Visitors can often watch work in progress and even lay a few petals themselves.

Ceremonies begin with a blessing service, then Wakes Week begins in earnest, with local imagination running riot and absolutely everyone welcome.

eak Rail would like to welcome visitors old and new during 2013 to experience the thrill of a bygone era whilst travelling on our heritage railway which operates throughout the year.

The line which has been reinstated mostly by volunteers forms part of the old Midland Railway line between Manchester Central and London St Pancras which was closed in 1968. We currently operate for a distance of 4 miles between Rowsley South and Matlock Platform 2 Stations with both steam and diesel locomotives in operation.

All train services have an onboard buffet coach serving a selection of cold refreshments and snacks, and a specially adapted coach for wheelchairs users.

Various special events are held throughout the year, perfect for the family or enthusiast to enjoy. Why not get your hands on the controls of a steam locomotive and participate in one of our hugely popular steam experience courses?

One old ballad tells that even the Devil dined in one of our show caverns, feasting on such dainties as ‘A rich fat Usurer stewed in his marrow’.

A BREWER’S TALE… I

t is a long time ago now, January 2003. It had been such a carefully prepared plan: sell the house, uproot my family, leave secure jobs and set up a microbrewery in the Peak District, simple!

Firstly I had to find suitable premises. In February I approached Chatsworth and fortunately Cunnery Barn on the Baslow to Chatsworth Road was available. Despite the site being terribly overgrown and the buildings being in disrepair the potential for a microbrewery was obvious.

Clearly there were issues to be addressed: planning, electricity, drainage, renovation and finance. A successful application to DEFRA for a Rural Enterprise Scheme grant and the support of the Chatsworth Settlement Trustees enabled the project to go ahead.

Eventually all the prerequisite approvals were in place and in earnest a site meeting was arranged.

However, just as everyone walked into the potential brew house a barn owl flew out of the opposite window! A nesting box was in use and the site had to be vacated until the young

owlets had fledged. It was only in September, 2004, that renovation work on the barns could begin. The builders made good progress and by Christmas everything was ready for the arrival of the brewing vessels.

Shortly afterwards the stainless steel pipe work was in situ and the brewery was almost complete, a real contrast between the old and the new. Raw materials were ordered and after a

A WALK AROUND TISSINGTON This easy to follow walk is suitable for all the family and incorporates a quintessential English village with majestic Jacobean Hall, cottages that ooze charm and character and a duck pond, all set within a stunning landscape of rolling hills in the Peak District National Park. of Parwich with Bradbourne Church as a distant landmark on the hilltop.

3. At the next bridge, walk up the narrow footpath on the left to access a lane. Turn left and follow this down to the village, passing fields of rich pasture where cattle, sheep and horses contentedly graze.

1. Start at the pay and display car park at what was the village station on the famous Tissington Trail.

Opened in 1971, the trail runs for 13 miles from Parsley Hay in the north to Ashbourne in the south along part of the trackbed of a former railway line. It is now a bridleway and walk/cycle path so watch out for and give consideration to cyclists and horse riders. From the car park walk under the bridge, passing the gate and metalwork sculpture.

2. As high embankments either side diminish to become grass verges, notice a conveniently positioned seat on the right with wonderful panoramic views towards the vale

4. Around the village are an assortment of quaint and quirky shops, craft workshops and a tearoom. Virtually all the houses and cottages belong to the Tissington Estate and some seventy percent of them are listed. The village was recorded in the Domesday Book as Tizinctun.

5. Walk down the main street, passing Tissington Hall, home to the FitzHerbert’s for over 500 years.

Dating from 1609, the main part of this magnificent house was built to replace an earlier moated fortification on the opposite side of the road, constructed around the same time as the church. Tissington Hall is the home of Sir Richard FitzHerbert and his family. A Baronetcy was conferred on Sir William FitzHerbert in 1784 by George III for his role as ‘Gentleman Usher to the King’ and Sir Richard is now the ninth incumbent of this title.

6. St Mary’s Church overlooks the village from an elevated bank.

Although heavily restored in the 19th century, the structure has many surviving Norman features. Within are several interesting monuments to members of the FitzHerbert family, whilst in the graveyard there is a gravestone to James Allsop who drownded (sic) on the Titanic!

7. Around the village are numerous wells and drinking troughs.

Tissington was one of the first villages to take part in the local tradition of Well Dressing. This custom is thought to date back to

medieval times and is a celebration for a pure and plentiful water supply. A pictorial collage of flower petals and organic materials are erected annually in front of each well. The Tissington Well Dressings begin on Ascension Sunday when they are blessed, but these colourful creations last for only a few days.

8. To return to the car park, head up the road past the duck pond and then turn right. It is said that no new houses have been built in Tissington for a hundred years, the red brick station houses on the right being the last to be constructed.

Eyam

hen local historian and collector Clarence Daniel died in 1987, his collection became the inspiration for Eyam Museum, which opened in 1994 in the old Methodist Chapel.

Lottery funding and local enthusiasm allowed it to expand into the success it is today.

The central theme is the 1665 outbreak of Bubonic Plague.

This tragic story, including accounts of individual families, is illustrated with dramatic paintings, graphics and models. The display includes remedies for the plague which seem bizarre to us today, and the latest research into the nature of the disease is presented.

The story continues with the recovery, and the development of industries such as mining and quarrying, cotton, silk, and shoes. This includes a dramatic diorama of an

old lead mine, and a display of fine local fossils and minerals.

Our Eyam Connections Room opened in 2012. It contains the prehistory of the Eyam area and a rather chilling display on 17th century medicine. Our collection of clay tobacco pipes is on display for 2013.

The 2014 centenary of the outbreak of World War I will be marked by an ambitious display including the stories of local servicemen and families.
