welcome to The Peacock Arts Trail 2023 FOLLOWING THE TRAIL
Welcome! I am absolutely delighted that you are joining us on this - the sixth - Peacock Arts Trail, marking our 10- year anniversary. From our small (but mighty!) beginnings back in 2013, this year’s trail remains true to our core aim of promoting the arts in our beautiful corner of North-West Wiltshire.
Some of our artists were part of the trail at the start and it has been a joy to watch careers and artistic direction of these artists blossom over the intervening years. As always, our artists are excited to have the opportunity of welcoming you to their studios, exhibition spaces and homes. Do ask questions, take inspiration and enjoy what they love doing.
Thank you once more to the generosity of Corsham Town Council and Heywood Prep who, together with many of our other advertisers and supporters, have been on the journey with us since the first trail in 2013. This event would not be possible without you!
Thank you of course to the artists themselves and the galleries who are taking part. You make the Trail what it is!
This is our last year with the committee in its current guise and as I step down as Chairman, I would like to give particular thanks to Victoria Jarman who has been the backbone of the trail over the last 10 years. Victoria, together with the rest of our committee have worked tirelessly, with boundless enthusiasm, to organise and promote this wonderful event. We all hugely look forward to supporting the new committee in the future and wish them every success.
I hope you enjoy your visit to our creative part of North-West Wiltshire!

Corsham Town Hall
The Town Hall is a venue on the trail again, with two new artists accommodated upstairs in the Methuen Hall.
Emma Catherine and Heather Stone’s artwork will share a stage with the exhibition panels displaying the work of our local schoolchildren.
Earlier this year, schools were set the theme of ‘The Wonder of the World’, which encouraged them to create a picture that represents wonder using any medium. Our youngest age category (Primary Schools) were given this inspiration…I wonder how the sky is held up, if the moon is made of cheese, if I’ll ever like Brussels sprouts, when it will be play time, who discovered that blue and red make purple, what my favourite animal’s home looks like.
We expect the environment, climate change, flora and fauna may feature in many pictures, and we have been excited to see that there are also mythical beasts, giants, peacocks, and tropical foliage arriving.
Emma Catherine Painting
Emma is a contemporary artist living in Bristol. Her work focuses on the tranquillity and esoteric qualities of nature. After studying Fine Art and working as a Designer, she moved to the South of France where she began her large gold leaf oil paintings.
Heather Stone Ceramics
Graduated from Plymouth University with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art, studying sculpture and photography. I make large, bold and distinctive hand-built ceramic forms. Dynamic mark-making creates movement, expression and rich surface textures. I am passionate about the environment. My current work is an on-going theme ‘..and the skies fell silent...’ reflecting on the steady decline of one-time common birds in my surrounding countryside.
Chris Dunn Illustration Painting
Chris Dunn is a watercolour artist and children’s book illustrator, influenced by Beatrix Potter, Arthur Rackham and Norman Rockwell. He will be showing a collection of original illustrations, drawings, signed limited edition prints, cards and books. Available to purchase will be signed copies of his fully illustrated ‘The Wind in the Willows’ and new picture book ‘The Night Before Christmas’ both published by Editions Caurette. If you ask very nicely, he might even show you some of his new Redwall cover artwork due to be published in 2024.
Snug Pumpkin Painting
Within my artwork, I try to incorporate the things that I love, such as nature, animals, whimsy, quotes and poems. work in either watercolour or acrylics and sometimes manipulate my artwork in Photoshop. I am inspired by the natural world around me, especially the glorious Wiltshire countryside, and the quaint local towns. I try to put across a warm, cosy and whimsical feeling in all that I create.

Little Spear Fine Art Painting
am a South African born pastel artist based in the UK. I paint in a realistic style as it connects me to the subject I’m painting and I enjoy the challenge of capturing the beauty and ‘feel’ of what I’m seeing. Soft pastel is my choice of medium as I love the feeling of holding the pigment in my hands and the direct approach of putting the colour straight onto paper. Pastels have a beautiful luminosity due to the layering of pigment crystals placed on paper and it is truly wonderful to see a pastel painting in person.

Michael Sutherland Painting
Michael Sutherland is a Corsham-based artist originally from the north of Scotland. Specialising mainly in oil painting and portraiture, Michael employs a range of techniques which marry the organic with the formality and structure of the traditional. Michael won the People’s Prize at the Pound Arts Open Exhibition, and his work has featured on Sky Arts’ Portrait Artist of the Year.

What an exciting two years it’s been since the last Peacock Arts Trail! Having received such amazing feedback at the old John Parker Gallery in town, I decided to take the plunge and open the Gallery up again. Here along with five other resident artists, I am lucky enough to have a permanent base to sell my art. Having taken inspiration from my environment, my work heavily features the local scenery including our famous peacocks! Working in acrylics and oil primarily, however resin is never far away from the studio.

Ceramics
Retiring early from teaching I did a foundation course and a degree (2.1) at Bath Spa University College and then opened a small gallery with a workshop behind. throw and assemble pieces, usually in porcelain, making jugs, bowls, vessels and crazy teapots. All are fired to 1260 degrees with bright coloured glazes in abstract designs reminiscent of seascapes, gardens and landscapes. They are often enhanced with gold lustre. They are made for fun so I hope you enjoy them.
Printmaking
Bam! My eyes have seen something that my brain has processed, and it’s made my soul sing. My very next thought is “how do I make that into a lino?” It can be anything, waves crashing against a rocky shore, a wind shaped Hawthorn tree. The glorious architecture of Clifton Suspension bridge floating effortlessly above the natural majesty of the Avon Gorge, the absolute perfect simplicity of a dandelion or the splendour of autumn leaves and their colours. My aim is to create a representation of what I saw when I had my “Bam” moment, and hopefully pass on the positive feeling.

Pat Bull Art Sculpture
Pat Bull lives and works in Wiltshire, surrounded by the beautiful countryside. Fascinated by the forms and figures of birds, Pat’s sculptures are inspired by the great outdoors. Determined to capture the rare and fleeting beauty of feathered creatures, his work freezes a single movement observed in wildlife. Pat works using the lost wax method and creates limited edition pieces in bronze.
SkyDog Glass Glass
Pj Buchanan is the artist behind SkyDog Glass. Pj’s work is influenced by the Bauhaus movement and modernist art - geometric shapes dominate, with the use of sometimes surprising colour combinations. In an age of bland hues her pieces aim to surprise with their energy and brashness. Recently Pj has been experimenting with glass powders and using silver foil to create surprising reactions with glass. The pieces produced also perform a useful function around the home, as well as being decorative pieces of art in their own right, for example fruit bowls, serving platters and cheese boards.
BSPK Jewellery
I love the process of making...forging...forming...casting... creating something new from a blob of silver or gold or an old piece of jewellery. Working through the process inspires and challenges new designs and ideas, which encourages an ever changing collection of bespoke work. With an emphasis on organic sculptural lines, the natural world and its intricacies help to inspire me. I’m drawn to unique and alluring gemstones which can create the focal point for a unique piece of jewellery to evolve.

I studied Art, Crafts and Drama at college in the early 1960’s. spent the 80’s and 90’s in local drama groups set painting, making costumes and props and doing make-up. I retired from a varied working life in 2002. Having spent over 50 years creating things at home I’ve decided to join the trail to show some of it at last, and maybe sell something too.
I am delighted to have a space in my dad’s gallery for my first Peacock Arts Trail. have a keen interest in architecture. I enjoy the process of creating structure through drawing and painting. Corsham High Street has inspired my series of paintings. try to capture the light as it illuminates the stone. It is the contrast between sunlight and shadow how this describes the building that I am particularly interested in. Am I as good an Artist as my dad? Perhaps! Come and judge for yourself!

Jan Nesbitt Artist Painting
Ceramics was the chosen medium after graduating from Falmouth University with a degree in Contemporary Crafts in 2014. Hand building is the current practice with pinch pots, coils and slabs, using textured clays. Experimenting with different clays to obtain interesting surface texture is a vital part of the process. Conquering technical challenges excites and offers encouragement to develop and move forward, finding my own voice. The recent aim is for more spontaneity and drama in the making process, inspiration being from nature, especially rock faces.
Painting
My inspiration and ideas all spring from the natural world, where I observe enchantment, and find imaginative threads leading to further ideas. The bright colours and techniques try to be true to the initial idea, and so the outcome varies.
My paintings aim to reflect my appreciation of the beauty and design in the landscape and to share this vision with those who look at my work. Subjects vary from wide landscapes and seascapes to the more intimate recording of local gardens and architecture. Although frequently use watercolours, sometimes with pen and ink drawing, I have also worked in other media, depending on the best to use for the subject. Commissioned works have often been requested for scenes of locations evoking personal memories. These are often of well loved family homes and gardens.

Judith paints memories of places visited in the past, locations seen in the mind’s eye of the artist. Working initially from photographs she transforms figurative images into soft and semi abstract paintings that seek a balance between chance and control whilst adhering to the importance and power of simplicity. The paint floods the wet paper creating surprising and unpredictable results. During this process the figurative work becomes abstract and the final painting emerges. Abstract art allows the artist to communicate feelings and emotions unconstrained by forms found in objective reality.

studied at Bath Academy of Art, Corsham, followed by many years illustrating children’s books, magazines, and jigsaw puzzles. Away from this developed my own painting style – local scenes, populated by animal characters, infused with humour and colour. More recently have been selling my work at galleries and fairs as original watercolours, giclee prints, cards, puzzles etc.

obtained my master’s degree in fine art painting at Bath school of art and design. My desire is to produce original art at affordable prices.

Tania designs and creates handcrafted contemporary silver jewellery in her studio in Wiltshire. Her designs are often drawn from the natural world with particular attention to surface texture and the subtle variations in colour and tone resulting from oxidisation. Her work is also informed by her training and work in ceramics and she holds a BA (Hons) in Ceramics from Camberwell College of Art. She has since discovered a passion for working with silver and has been making jewellery ever since.

Caroline Rudge Painting
Rudge works in the traditional Medieval medium of egg tempera, often with gold leaf, to create modern day icon paintings exploring themes of self and motherhood. Working with intricate and multi-layered techniques and media, Rudge explores the self as characters through realistic portraiture, and found natural objects, such as taxidermy, eggs and nests. Rudge’s stop-motion animations use painstaking painting techniques and paper cut-outs to produce diverse and memorable short films, many of which have been nominated for awards and shown in film festivals worldwide.

Rachel works in paint and print, conveying moments of connection with nature. From focusing in on organic pattern, to taking in vast landscapes, she uses a variety of techniques to explore the interwoven aspects of habitat and environment.
Anya Beaumont Mixed Media
Anya Beaumont is a visual artist working with a range of materials and processes. Much of the material she uses is repurposed waste, selected for its physical properties. In recent years concerns of contemporary life, both political and environmental, have increasingly influenced her work. “Future Fossils’ and ‘Hopeful Monsters’ are current ongoing series. Bizarre, comical, even disturbing, the artist is confronting consumerism with humour and pathos whilst contemplating a future where material values are upended and what is currently waste is recognized as a valuable resource.

Textiles
I am a mixed media textile artist based in Corsham. I’ve always had a passion for sewing and love to create unique, original textile art. Mainly self taught, create original cards and framed pictures, inspired by the landscape around me. These textile scenes are created using a variety of fabrics, processes and techniques, including dyeing, painting and manipulating. I will often use discarded linens and lace, layering fabrics onto a base, using machine embroidery and hand stitch to add specific detail. I feel there is a creative side in us all.

am a self taught artist and have enjoyed painting and creating since childhood. I paint in oils, acrylics, and watercolour depending on the subject matter and the mood want to depict in the final work. also love collage and photography. am constantly ‘on the look out’ for interesting subject matter which could be old buildings, seascapes or abstract landscapes.
As an artist living in the Corsham area I am drawn to the beauty of nature and architecture in and around Wiltshire and Bath. Much of this is reflected in my work, where create from deep within, as my art takes me into another world, a therapeutic world. work with mixed media including acrylic paints and more recently oil paints, and primarily use palette knives to create my art. I enjoy mixing my palette by combining varying amounts of primary colour to produce a gamut of colours. For me these colours evoke emotions in my paintings, to touch the souls of those drawn to my art.
Textiles
I am a self-taught artist who began specialising in the bright and bold art of silk painting in 2014. I have always aimed to portray the beauty that can be found in nature, and my recent body of work covers the uniqueness of the human form, focusing on body positivity and mental health. will be exhibiting a range from thought-provoking large silk wall hangings, to honest and emotional mixed media collages, to delicate and colourful silk scarves as well as cards, coasters, prints, suncatchers and silk painting kits for all ages.
Compton’s Glass Workshop Glass
Glass simply ’does it’ for me. love the colour, shadows and tactile nature of kiln formed glass, the instant results, scientific qualities and the ‘ta-da’ factor of opening the kiln (which is always a source of excitement and trepidation!) I enjoy experimenting with colour combinations, surface texture, adding other materials to the glass as well as playing with the form and function. My recent work has focused on the vastness of space, how insignificant we really are, and also the extraordinary magic of life on our own planet, in particular, the beauty and fragility of botanical forms.

paint in oils on board. Oils smell good, they feel good and like the way I can use a very traditional medium to make vivid, modern paintings. My paintings are colourful and sometimes textured. They reflect my love of design, pattern and repetition. The natural world provides most of my subjects plants, fruit, fish and insects - but I sometimes go off on an abstract tangent. I am much more Art Deco than I am Art Nouveau. My paintings range from 30x40cm to 80x60cm. am currently working on a series of local landscapes and am getting into Wiltshire skies.

Whilst many of us have a curiosity to find out our origins on Earth, using telescopes and spaceships to search for answers, others pose the question ‘What is our impact on Earth?’. From climate change to war and social unrest, our planet has been burdened by humans. Samuel uses his art to romanticise about foreign worlds far away. How similar or bizarre would they be? Would there be evidence of civilisations familiar to humans, and how would they have impacted their planets?

paint directly from life, looking for colour, rhythm and movement. Although mostly figurative, there will be abstract work as well.
Jane Scott Ceramics
Jon is a Corsham based potter who works as a structural engineer in Bath, which is evident in his work with symmetry and precision in his forms. He produces hand thrown functional ware in a range of homemade high flow glazes to generate dynamic finishes. He also uses slipcasting to reproduce digital designs which are finished in the same glazes. Jon was a contestant on Series 6 of the Channel 4 show The Great Pottery Throwdown 2023 which has led to a number of interesting new styles in his work.
Celia Smith Sculpture
Jane Scott Ceramics is situated in studio 9, Lancefield Studios in Pickwick. The complex of nine studios in Lancefield Place is an exciting artists’ and creative community hub project. You will find professional local artists, artisans, and creatives here as well as Jane’s lovely pottery studio where she teaches and holds regular pottery classes and workshops as well as making time for her own practice.
Celia Smith is an artist who draws with wire, as others draw with pencil. For her, creating sculptures out of wire is like drawing in three dimensions. Birds are her main inspiration; capturing their movement and character is her primary concern. She finds that wire has a spontaneity that can give her sculptures a feeling of life and energy. The majority of Celia’s sculptures are of native British birds. She aims to capture not only their shape but also their movement and character.

Chic Newbury Painting
Retired builder, now enjoying watercolour painting in my self built studio in my garden.
Bath Stone Sculpture Sculpture
I am a geologist, stone mason and sculptor working with stone coming from a mine less than a mile from my workshop. The aim of the simple geometric forms I create is that they are easy on the eye but generate some curiosity or feel connected to our sense of touch. The pieces are for indoor or outdoor and do take commissions. All pieces are worked using hand tools using the principles of stone masonry that have remained unchanged for millennia.
Art is Joyous Painting
Joy has been painting in watercolour for nearly three decades. Landscape and the built environment are her preferred subject matter, and although her work is inspired by our natural surroundings she has a great deal of fun in using other media to create abstract and varied images. Commissioned collages depict whole life stories in paint and fabric often with a humorous twist. Joy’s Art Group enjoys coming together in a collaborative and fun way to create artwork which reflects all the artist’s individual styles.
Anna Currey Illustrator Drawing
As a children’s book illustrator, have always loved doing preparatory sketches of people and animals. Lately I have found myself concentrating more and more on this side of my work. Planting myself in fields, zoos, stations and markets, sketch the life around me. I also enjoy exploring the endless challenges of printmaking and sculpture.
Chloe Yandell Painting
Chloe uses a variety of mediums to convey a concept, exploring ideas, techniques and processes throughout the creative journey. She focuses on texture and mark making. Carving into the piece itself is a theme that runs through her body of work. Evolving throughout exploration allows the art to centre around the materials and their potential, the abstract pieces often seen as poetic paintings, a narrative intertwined in an atmospheric landscape. Evoking the onlooker’s memory, the paintings take on a different identity each time they are viewed.
Dominic Warwood-Smith Ceramics
Designer Maker currently working in clay: a mix of slipware techniques at earthenware temperatures for expressive one-off pieces and simple glazed stoneware for functional tableware. Aiming to create something fluid, contemporary and fresh from traditional processes whilst keeping the ‘freshness’ alive in the successive stages is my challenge.

I am a self-employed carpenter, painter and my studio work is my personal creative outlet. I use locally-sourced wood and re-invent new and original pieces. My pieces emerge from the form and grain of the natural wood and the challenge is to create a piece of art with a new function. I am inspired by nature and the pieces make are usually following a very organic and natural form. My studio is a practical place full of tools and work in progress, with New Farm being a fabulous place to hide or enjoy socialising with the other artisans and the farm community based there.

Rebecca McCarthy-Carter Mixed Media
I studied Creative Arts at Bath Spa University College before doing my PGCE and becoming a trained art teacher. have juggled my own art alongside full time art teaching for over 23 years and have developed a more painterly and mixed media approach to my work. My recent mixed media landscapes have focused more on creating texture and atmosphere and often the techniques and pieces evolve through the exploration of the creative journey that week. My inspiration comes from my trips to Cornwall, the natural environment, fellow artists, students and from my very creative family.

Claire Newman-Williams
Photography
Claire Newman-Williams is a photographic artist who creates images that appear to have been pulled from the no-man’s land that exists between imagination and reality. These images, often described as “filmic” and “haunting”, leave us wondering which world they inhabit. Are they created in our contemporary world, or are they visual echoes plucked from another era? Like patchworks of the past, Claire’s photographs, faded and distressed, are often layered with poetic text to create the impression that each work is the sewing together of a forgotten memory.

My practice as a sculptor came quite by chance via a meeting with an artist in 2018. That one conversation renewed a lifelong passion for craftsmanship and sculpture that was put aside after the early death of my father. The in between years were not wasted, I spent them as a professional graphic designer, a career very much enjoyed. Coming back to my starting point realise sculpture has freed me up in a way used to dream about. Sculpture fires my imagination as have always been an observer of people seeing both the joy and pain in peoples faces – all life is in an expression.

am a professional painter and my work is inspired by the land and sea. In my paintings I explore the underlying structure of the land, the power of the sea and the transient qualities of both. I am drawn to the ancient remote landscapes and their atmosphere and apparent fragility in relation to light, rain and wind. It is that fleeting moment in time I try to capture. My medium is oil on panel and also pastels. exhibit regionally and in London and am part of the Appledore Gallery in Devon.

My journey as an artist has taken me from the human form, to seascapes and more recently to abstract painting. The one thing have continually been doing throughout is using texture. I love texture in a painting! I am now in the process of combining the human form and abstract and hope you like the results as much as do.

Philipa Batty Mixed Media
Phil feels she creates art from her soul. Inspiration can strike from anywhere, inspired by the things she loves or by concepts that she wishes to explore. She uses mixed media, keen to utilise the materials and objects that surround her. Re-working old canvases, collaging practice pieces, palette paper or old journals, printing on paper packaging and creating compositions on cardboard or wood. Phil rejoices in the sanctuary of artmaking. She abstracts to express how she feels. She revels in the process and in how the materials, line, texture, colour and artist interplay with each other.

My journey into edible art started over 25 years ago with a traditional City and Guilds, a Salon Culinaire award, and a request to replicate the self-portrait of Artemisia Gentileschi in icing! Having had a successful career in the jewellery industry, I’m now focused on highly detailed design for royal icing biscuits and specialist cakes. I have a love of nature and floral themes, a thread which runs through most of my work. I offer classes UK-wide, undertake commissions and also teach from my studio in Holt.

Marion King Painting
I have enjoyed art since my teenage years. After college taught art in Trowbridge and Reading. I have been a member of various art groups around West Wilts. My career for many years was that of a primary school teacher and art adviser for Wiltshire. After a serious illness was advised to retire from teaching, subsequently taking up full-time art training and progressing to gaining a 1st class honours degree at The University of the West Of England. At the end of the course I was awarded The Rebecca Smith Trophy for outstanding printmaking and have also won the prestigious Oexmann Trophy.

Brian King Sculpture
On retirement was persuaded to take up sculpture at Bath College with Margaret Lovell, Ed Kinsey and Jonathan Mulvaney who introduced me to glass work. I have exhibited with the Bath Society Of Artists, the Cotswold Sculpture Association, Devizes Museum and multiple art trails. My favoured material is acrylic resin loaded with marble dust, bronze dust or iron fillings. I am fascinated by movement whether created by humans and animals or the elements.

My journey to becoming an upholsterer began at London Metropolitan University in 2012, where I studied upholstery for four years. was awarded first prize by the Worshipful Company of Upholders in my second year and went on to gain a Diploma in Upholstery from the Association of Master Upholsterers & Soft Furnishers. I really enjoy taking on whatever project I’m approached to do, from traditionally reupholstering antiques to employing modern upholstery techniques on 20th century pieces.

Inviting quiet contemplation, Verity’s landscape paintings present a space for reflection. Often showing the last light of the day they offer a sense of belonging and protection. They affirm our place in an otherwise complicated world. She is inviting everyone to reflect on what being in a landscape alone or together means to each of us. Expect views of the Bybrook Valley, the Colerne horizon and other dramatic landscapes.

Working in porcelain on a wheel Penny throws colourful porcelain tableware. The enjoyment of shared meals with family and friends, along with a love of colour and artisan work, have combined to create pieces that can be used and enjoyed for years.
think the form and shape created by random objects (what many would call junk!) has always caught my eye and informed my work. Tired, distressed, forgotten objects. Rusty bits of metal sticking through broken roofs. The messy collage of torn paper billboards. the squiggle of wires bursting from disused radios. Form and beauty in broken, forgotten, unseen stuff... My photo collages are a progression of this idea. A cocktail of random shapes, objects and places which tell their own stories because when thrown together they become something new....something quite different and alive.
Sculpture
I am a maker of wooden figurative and abstract sculptures based on life, experience, feeling and emotion. chase the grain by carving, scorching, blasting, and creating large faces or strange curiosities from nature. My work justifies my existence, helps me express myself and find meaning. As a sculptor I evoke another time, creating a dreamscape, whilst sharing the beauty of wood that I am fortunate to see daily. With cross-cultural sources from my African birthplace to historical and contemporary Britain, I have always been drawn to ancient art and ritual.
Charlotte Englefield Art Painting
am predominantly a self taught artist, passionate about producing artwork from an almost photographic quality, to a more relaxed informal style. take my inspiration from the natural world and the environment around me. My work is generally a process of applying acrylics using many layers. A constant balance of pulling lighter colours forward and then pushing them back with a dark translucent glaze. Before repeating the process again and again to create an illusion of depth.

Bold silhouettes acquire their own character when combined with the spontaneous and beautiful nature of mono-print. Kathy is influenced by her love of ceramic form and seasonal botanicals. Kathy also runs print workshops from her home studio.

The beach is my ‘Happy Place’! love to spend my time on the beach along the coasts of Dorset, Pembrokeshire and Cornwall collecting driftwood and anything else that catches my attention and then hopefully I can turn it into wall art or a keyring, or whatever my imagination allows. I’m inspired by bringing to life something natural and enhancing it.
Craftedglow by Galit Textiles
My work is an ongoing exploration of materials, structure and embellishment. I work mainly with textiles and stitch to create very unique pieces that show my love for colour and life. My inspiration comes from the natural world and cultural aspects.
