What stays, what goes: It’s budget time for the District KRISTEN FRIESEN EDITOR

It was the result of lots of work on the part of Don and his wife, Anne, who spent time carefully researching our town’s contribution to the First World War. “The Peachland Historical Society sincerely appreciated the assistance of the Legion Branch in providing the photos and some of the information which we needed to prepare the plaque for public display,” says Dionne. “We could not have accomplished the project without their help so when we had the sign made for our interpretive public display near the Cenotaph, we asked for two to be produced so that the Legion could have its own copy for display in the building.”

The plaque will hang proudly at the Legion, says Jean Saul.

As many Peachlanders know, our town lost the most men per capita by the end of the First World War. The plaques were designed and made to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armistice, which ended that war.

Although there are no signs of spring outside, District of Peachland department heads and councillors are busy inside, poring over numbers and reconciling them with plans for the future. It’s budget time, and the process is expected to stretch over the coming weeks.

Doug Pryde, Peachland’s Director of Finance, says a 2% tax increase is the initial target to begin the budget deliberation process, a number that may change, depending on council’s decisions.

“Through council discussion, this increase may change depending on decisions by council to re-prioritize certain projects for tax funding,” he says, adding the 2% tax increase is based on average inflation, which flucuates over time.

Councillors will take a look this Tuesday (March 12) at what they’ve trimmed so far, when district staff presents a revised cutback schedule, the result of going through each item of the operating budget, line by line. Councillors did this during their Committee of the Whole meeting Feb. 26.

“Traditionally, council reviews each item on the cutback schedule, confirming whether or not it remains in the budget, or if it’s removed from the budget,” Pryde said on the 26th, explaining the cutback schedule identifies special operating projects and those capital projects under taxation and prioritized by district management as high, medium and low budget priority. It also included projects requiring special council approval, such as civic grants.

While all the civic grants requested passed councillors’ approval (with the exception of one), lower-priority items on the operational end of things did not make the cut, such as xeriscaping the community policing office grounds, continuing with the next phase of adding to the town’s Christmas light

decorations, and painting the bay floors at the fire department.

Councillors did, however agreed to put $7,000 into repairing and redoing Peachland’s bioswale - the vegetated area between Beach Ave. and the pathway along the lake.

“It is our Beach Avenue presentation, which is the face of our community and I think if we can find some way to address the bioswale I think that would be money well spent because it is how people perceive Peachland and it’s a huge part of our economy.

I think it’s an item that if we can find a way to move it into our current budget, I would like to see that one included” said councillor Mike Kent.

Peachland Fire and Rescue Service also gained funds for equipment allowing firefighters to battle more modern, tall buildings such as the new senior’s housing complex. They’re also getting money for mobile CAD and hardware installation for the new fire truck. Councillors also decided to put $10,000 aside to get plans going for a new fire hall down the road.

“The fire hall replacement scored fairly high in the longterm strategic plan of council,” Fire Chief Dennis Craig told councillors during the Feb.26 COTW meeting. He explained the money would be used to hire a consultant who can help create a plan for a new fire hall down the road.

“This will be more about setting up the charter, a milestone plan, and help us create a plan for replacement (of the fire hall.)”

Councillors also decided on the 26th to put $5,000 towards the eventual replacement of the community policing van.

As Feb. 26 discussions about the cutback schedule were wrapping up, councillor Kent said he’s happy with what they’ve decided so far.

“It would be a real feather in our cap to keep our taxes in line around that 2% mark,” he said.

In additional to seeing the results of what they’ve cut so far, councillors on Tuesday will also review the water and sewer operating budgets.

NEWS ROTARY’S HOUSEWARMING GIFT: The new senior’s centre on 6th St. has a very well-equipped common room now, thanks to local Rotarians. They banded together and bought a 55-inch TV, a sound bar, and appliances for the kitchen.

Residents are now starting the move-in process, which will occur in stages over the coming weeks. The Rotary managed to raise the money for the TV and appliances through a murder mystery-themed evening last fall. Friday was a nice completion to the Rotary’s goal to help the seniors centre, as they started planning for this back in 2017.

RCMP looking for fraud suspect KRISTEN FRIESEN EDITOR

Police are looking for a man they say has cheated several Central Okanagan businesses out of thousands of dollars.

West Kelowna RCMP spokesman Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey says between December of 2018 and early January, an unknown man gave a fake name and used stolen ID to obtain cash loans from more than one financial lending business. Police learned about this in February, and now they’re asking for the public’s help.

“Our hope is not only to positively identify the

suspect, but to also prevent further businesses from being victimized by his tactics,” O’Donaghey says.

The suspect, who police say made off with approximately $10,000, has been described to police as a Caucasian male, in his 30s, of slender build, with trimmed facial hair. He often wears a black baseball cap with white lettering.

University hearing study seeks participants.

Connect Hearing, with hearing researcher Professor Kathy PichoraFuller at the University of Toronto, seeks participants who are over 50 years of age and have never worn hearing aids for a hearing study investigating factors that can inf luence better hearing. All participants will have a hearing test provided at no charge and if appropriate, the clinician may discuss hearing rehabilitation options including hearing aids.

Qualifying participants may also receive a demo of the latest hearing technology. The data collected from this study will be used to further our understanding of hearing loss and improve life-changing hearing healthcare across Canada.

Why participate in the hearing study? Hearing problems typically result from damage to the ear and researchers have spent decades trying to understand the biology behind hearing loss. More importantly, researchers now realize the need to better understand how hearing loss affects your everyday life*.

In this new hearing study, Professor Pichora-Fuller and her team are trying to find out how people learn to live with hearing loss and how new solutions could help these people take action sooner and live life more fully.

It is estimated that 46% of people aged 45 to 87 have some degree of hearing loss1, but most do not seek treatment right away. In fact, the average person with hearing loss will wait ten years before seeking help2 . This is because at the beginning stages of hearing loss people often find they can “get by” without help, however as the problem worsens this becomes increasingly harder to do. For some people this loss of clarity is only a problem at noisy restaurants or in the car, but for others it makes listening a struggle throughout the entire day.

By studying people who have difficulty hearing in noise or with television, we hope to identify key factors impacting these difficulties and further understand their influence on the treatment process.

If you’re reading this on Friday, it’s March 8, International Women’s Day. We all have women in our lives we can take a moment to appreciate today: Strong, supportive moms and sisters, fiercely

loyal friends, and leaders who have the power to inspire everyone.

We have no shortage of that in Peachland. From the mayor, to our CAO, our arts groups and in our homes, businesses and our local school, there are a lot of women to look up to here. I’m turning over my next few pages to some of these ladies. I think we can all learn a bit about how to do life from them. Enjoy!

What do you consider as your biggest personal goal and your biggest professional role?

My professional goal was to be a bank manager by the time I was 30. I met the Duke of Edinburgh in 1978. And I carried the Olympic torch in 2010. A personal goal? To be the best that I can be at everything I do.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given? Any advice you’d give to a

young woman, or your younger self?

Before you can be what you want to be, you have to let go of who you are.

Any thoughts on community, and what role it plays for you?

My proudest achievement putting all of my experience together and being part of this amazing community of Peachland. Being named 2014 Citizen of the Year was indeed an honour.

My biggest personal goal was raising my family, while at the same time, working to contribute to the family income. Historically, women have had to take on many roles, and it’s a fine balance, but we are built for it... mentally and physically. The energy of “youth” (mine, back then) helped too!

I’m very proud of my children, who are leading productive, happy lives. That’s all you can hope for.

My greatest accomplishment is seeing the passing of the life lessons I taught them having become a part of their lives now, and especially seeing it passed down to my grandchildren.

My biggest personal goal is to be the best parent, grandparent, daughter, sibling, I can be.

My biggest professional goal has been and continues to be to provide service to others.

I do this by working at and supporting all others who work and volunteer with the Peachland Wellness Centre providing programs and services for the community.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given? Any advice you’d give to a young woman, or your younger self?

I was given a book a few years ago, The Prophet, at a very dark moment in my life and I use it today to continue to remind myself to never give up on myself or others. Don’t stop, always do

your best, while at the same time not forsaking others, against all life throws your way.

I really like this quote from the book: “You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.”

Any thoughts on community, and what role it plays for you?

Our great little community allows me to live my best and supports me to support others. I love Peachland.

Janet Hornseth: Gallery Coordinator, Peachland Art Gallery I would have to say my greatest personal goal was bringing up our 2 daughters in Peachland and helping shape 2 kind, ethical and contributing individuals who are doing a wonderful job of raising our 5 grandchildren.

I was fortunate enough to be an “at-home” Mom which translated into many happy years as a volunteer with the Peachland schools (both primary and elementary). I was Brown Owl to a fabulous group of Brownies and remember fondly our camping weekends and coming back from a hike smelling the aroma of roast turkey. Only Mary Carroll would successfully cook a fabulous roast turkey dinner with all the trimmings on an old wood cook stove!

Coaching ball was a highlight. Peachland Posse – District Champs 2 years running were a source of great pride for Peachland.

Community involvement has always played a huge role in my life. Thinking back to the days of the PBA (Peachland Business Association) and co-chairing Business Expo with Pat Grieve, Winter Carnival at the Riding Club and most recently a director on the Peachland Community Arts Council as well as a volunteer driver for the Wellness Centre. While I was at the Volunteer Appreciation breakfast the other day, someone said to me “I love our town”. Looking around the room and seeing so many who have given so much of their time and for so many years, I had to agree!

I guess my advice would be to young Moms and no different than any other Grandmother’s advice would be. Treasure these days with your children – they go by far too quickly.

Darlene Hartford: President, BEEPS and Chamber secretary I believe service to one’s community builds character and compassion, provides connectivity and imbeds a sense of accomplishment. The personal reward of community service well surpasses the commitment of time and energy required to take a leading role or to contribute as a participant. I’ve been fortunate to have a support system of good friends and family throughout my life. And one of

I was humbled to receive the Citizen of the Year award last year for doing things that make me happiest. I once read that to become a good citizen one must buy lemonade from a child’s lemonade stand, contribute to a Fall Fair and set up a swing or a bench in your own front yard. I believe in this. And today my ongoing goal is to, in some small way, leave my mark on this world and make it a better place.

the best pieces of advice I received was from a neighbour sharing a morning coffee. I was experiencing the frustrations of an at-home Mom faced with never ending piles of laundry, household chores and constant driving when what I desired was to spread my wings opening a small business or becoming an author.

My friend’s words were, “There will be a time in your life for everything you want to do, and everything you want to be. It just might not be right now”.

This advice created balance in my life and guided me in becoming a goal setter while still allowing myself to remain a dreamer. Deborah Livingstone: President, Peachland Community Arts Council I spent all of my working years in Vancouver, focused on family, friends, my work and life in general. When we left our last home there, we didn’t even know our next door neighbors’ names. Upon retiring to Peachland 18 years ago, my husband and I found a real community. The first phone call we received was from George Waldo, the Mayor, welcoming us to Peachland! As President of the Arts Council I’ve been privileged to work alongside a fantastic team of volunteers. In four short years we created and maintain a beautiful art gallery in the Historic School. We take tremendous pride in offering our community as many different and diverse programs as we can, hopefully appealing to all ages.

11 members of our 14 member Board are women. All from various backgrounds and careers. Each of us brings something to the table. We support each other. We treasure each other. If I had any advice for a younger version of myself it would be to join in... a little earlier! Don’t save your energies just for retirement. When you embrace a wonderful, welcoming community like ours, the rewards are grand!

Since I was a young girl I wanted to be a wife and mother. This was my biggest personal goal, which I have accomplished – my boys are now 18 and 20 years old.

When my husband and I married and planned to have children, we decided that I would be a stay-at-home mom. This wasn’t always easy financially so we lived on a very strict budget as we were living on only one income. I did take odd jobs occasionally if they worked into our plan of me staying home with our two boys.

I was able to be there for the boys when my husband was working a lot and often working out of town. I believe it was the best job in the world. One of my favourite quotes is one I received in a goody bag at an International Women’s Day event several years ago, it is a quote from Gloria Steinem – “We have begun to raise our daughters more like our sons… but few have the courage to raise our sons more like our daughters.” This one really stuck with me since I have two boys so I really tried to do that in raising my sons.

My biggest professional goal was to work with my husband on the business we TAMI THERIAULT had for 9 years, to build it with integrity er young women, it would be to remain open to all and to sell it. This goal was accomplished.

I am working towards creating a body of art work people and to put yourself out there – don’t let fear and pursuing my love of writing. What I have learned keep your dreams from being accomplished. Misery so far is that everyone craves connection, and by do- loves company but so does joy – so spread joy rather ing what I love, I am able to encourage others to do than misery. Positively influence those around you.

The best advice I have been given is to be kind and that people will forget what you said, people will forbe inclusive – this I learned from my grade 7 teacher get what you did, but people will never forget how when I was not being kind to a classmate. Now I make you made them feel.” Leave people feeling just a little sure that I try to invite others into conversations or better than when you found them.

Being involved in our community means everyto events and I do not say anything behind someone’s back that I wouldn’t say to their face. This has helped thing to me. Being connected with those around me fills me up – I am happy to be of service to our beaupeople to open up to me.

Continued from Pg 4: Cindy Fortin Becoming Mayor of Peachland was definitely my greatest professional success, and an honour to me. Being part of the decision-making process that shapes the community where I raised my family, and see other young families just starting out, is very satisfying and warms my heart. I can’t say there haven’t been challenges, but that’s normal for any local government.

Being the first elected woman mayor, I’d hoped that gender wouldn’t play a role – biases and opinion-wise – especially in this day and age. But I got a rude awakening. There was definitely a double-standard on Council, by a couple of Councillors. But I’ve faced gender discrimination challenges my entire work life, and I never shrank away from them. In fact, it just makes me stand taller.

My hope is that I can pass some of my life experiences and strength in that area onto other women looking to pursue what traditionally were considered male-dominated careers, and overall, be a part of a cultural and mindset change in that area.

Being well rooted in a community is a great feeling. Walking down the street, or attending events, and greeting friends and acquaintances, new ones and long established ones, is the greatest reward of belonging to a community as great as Peachland.

Annick Stoltz is the one who keeps it all together. She does a lot more than answer the phones and book the ads.

She’s the nucleus of our team, keeping all our moving parts together, and because she’s been here at the View the longest, she knows all the ins and outs of what makes our little house off Beach Avenue into such a productive hub. She also brings Calvin, the resident Newshound, to the office. He is the meeter and greeter to everyone who enters the office.

We’ve heard a lot over the years about the so-called ‘death of newspapers’, and yes, staff layoffs and papers ceasing production is a current reality.

Most of my co-workers at the weekly and daily papers I worked with over the years are now out of the industry.

So, in this digital age, it’s almost a rarity — and indeed a pleasure, to be the editor of a publication that is not only surviving in these times, we’re actually thriving. More than 2,800 Peachlanders get their View delivered via Canada

Post every week, and we go out to every single business in town. Know that when you read the View, you’re reading Peachland’s only source for local news.

Yes, you’ll sometimes see Peachland stories on Castanet, the Kelowna Daily Courier or elsewhere. But know that your Peachland View editor is the only one who actually attends the council meetings, spends weekends at local events and lives and volunteers in the community. From the senior’s centre flooding, to the doctor’s office closing, business break-ins and what we’re actually paying for RCMP service, all those stories came from the Peachland View first.

So why are we dedicating this space for self-promotion? We want to let you know why newspapers still matter. In

Finally, it’s clear sailing between Peachland and Summerland.

Since the Jan. 31 slide spilled tonnes of rocks and debris on Hwy. 97, crews were busy blasting the hillside for stability, while creating a detour route. In all, more than 20,000 cubic metres of rock and debris were removed from the area.

Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure officials say a 90 km/h is now in place, and although traffic is open in both directions, the southbound slow lane nearest the slide will be closed so crews can monitor the slope for any additional movement.

Weather and wind were factors during the cleanup process, and they say they appreciate drivers’ patience over the past month.

Albas: Shocking testimony has left Ottawa reeling As I sit down to write my weekly report I must admit to being at a loss for words.

On Parliament Hill, the former Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould shared her details related to the emerging situation with SNC Lavalin.

To be candid this testimony was shocking and has left Ottawa reeling.

Ms. Wilson-Raybould stated on the record that she was the target of a “consistent and sustained” effort by Prime Minister Trudeau and his most senior staff to politically interfere in the criminal case against SNC-Lavalin.

The testimony included references allegedly quoted from Mr. Trudeau’s Principal Secretary, stating that there would be (political) interference, that there was no solution without some interference.

In addition, Mr. Trudeau’s Chief of Staff, Katie Telford, allegedly said they were “sick of legalities”.

Other comments included statements such as “we need to get re-elected.” and that if the former Justice Minister changed her mind that the they would line-up people to write op-eds claiming everything

was legal.

The testimony from Ms. Wilson-Raybould ultimately referenced the Prime Minister, Clerk of the Privy Councillor, former principal secretary to the Prime Minister, Finance Minister and the Chief of Staff to the Finance Minister.

In total 11 people were raised in a series over 10 calls and 10 meetings.

Ultimately Ms. Wilson-Raybould was told “He’s (Mr. Trudeau) going to find a way to do it one way or another”.

The testimony later revealed that the former Justice Minister’s deputy minister was allegedly informed by the Clerk that there would soon be a “new (Justice) Minister and that the first thing the deputy should do with the new minister is have a discussion about SNC (Lavalin) and the DPA (deferred prosecution agreement).

I will share some of the final words in her prepared statement from Ms. Wilson-Raybould: “I hope and expect that the facts speak for themselves. I imagine Canadians now fully understand that in my view, these events constituted pressure

Leeanne Patricia 1960-2019

Leeanne was born November 26, 1960, daughter to Donald and Patricia Sanders. She spent her younger years growing up in Port Moody, BC, graduating in 1978 from Port Moody Senior Secondary School. Leeanne worked at various places during her life, but truly loved her time working in the construction field. Leeanne lived in the Lower Mainland until she married, then moved to Prince George, BC. Life brought them to Peachland in the early 1990’s and with that her life path changed. Leeanne and John met in 1998 and fell madly in love. That was the start of their life journey together.

Leeanne and John established their very successful business in 2012 and worked side by side building their future. Leeanne just successfully completed her Advanced Bookkeeping/Accounting Certification course at Okanagan College, Kelowna, in June 2018.

Leeanne loved her community of Peachland. Her family, neighbours and friends played an important part in her life and held a special part in her heart. Leeanne worked and played hard, she loved bingo, slo-pitch, walks with her friends and helping out wherever she could. Leeanne had a zest for life and lived it by her own rules. Anyone that knew her understood her love for life. She always had a kind word to share. No matter what life threw at her, she made the best of it, and life sure did throw her some hardballs.

She was predeceased by her Father, Donald Sanders (1995), Mother, Patricia Sanders (2018) and her Brother, Brian Sanders (2001). Leeanne will be missed by her Husband, John Spackman, Sisters; Melanie (Frank) McEachern and April Sanders, Nephew, David (Amanda) McEachern, Nieces; Stephanie (Jason) Dahlgren, Kaila Cozzi (Sean), Great-nieces; Hanna, Marley, Anna and Ava, Sister-in-laws; Bev Andrews (Cam), Joy Dafoe, Niece, Bree (Joe) Raheume, Issac, Jackie, Violet, Nephew, Darcy Dafoe, Nieces; Sarah Kruz and Tanya (Robyn) Dakota, Treyton, Xavier.

As per Leeanne’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service.

Do you want to work at the PWC? Working – a necessity for most of us and for most of our lives. What would happen if you could find the best job ever? Well, here it is, and it has all the best parts of any position, anywhere.

You might be asking, what is this all about? Well, I am one of the current Services Coordinators here at the Peachland Wellness Centre (PWC) and will be leaving temporarily for a year starting in April 2019.

I am going to take care of family/travel and all with the blessings of my employer/staff, which is pretty much unheard of these days. There are very few places that would be this supportive, open and caring to its employees. But that’s the thing, you don’t feel like an employee – you feel like you are in a big friendship group or family. It makes it very hard to leave.

I have been officially working here for the last couple years after volunteering for several years prior. I have known from the beginning that this place really cares about the people it serves – the wonderful community of Peachland. And I also know that there are great people in the area – some who volunteer for the PWC, a few very lucky people actually get paid for spending time here and others who get all kinds of help and support from this unique organization. This could be you!

The Services Coordinator role aims to connect with people in the community in support of well-being, independence, social engagement and connection to information/resources and referral. Our services include: Better at Home, (BAH); Friendly Visitors, (FV); Helping Hands, (HH); Outreach; and Transportation. Services may be added or removed or changed from time to time. Another huge bonus – you will never get bored!

The Services Coordinator is responsible for the development and delivery of the above-mentioned services, which aims to promote independent living in the community.

What qualifications or abilities do you need? Or what is the job like?

• Team work – We are a team so the ability to “play

well with others” is important • Flexibility – We adjust and adapt to the needs of the PWC/community and things change regularly so being flexible is important • Problem solver – Seeing that someone might need help in some way and being able to figure out how to help them.

Arts activities aplenty, from Peachland to Summerland and even painting and sipping in the south of France Some artists may well have felt exhausted for a few days following the HeARTS Festival. PCAC president Deborah Livingstone was full of praise for those who’d put themselves out there, demonstrating and inviting the public to participate in their particular art form. Hopefully their enthusiasm will spill over to others in the community and their love for the arts will spread afield. Many thanks are due to those visitors, especially newcomers, who turned up and supported the arts.

Images of some of the HeARTS Festival Showcase events can now be viewed in the Artisan showcase Slideshow on the peachlandarts.ca website as well as ‘Blind’ Artist – Susan Haglund on the same page. Jazz vocalist, Anna Jacsyzyn’s concert with guitarists Loni Moger and Sean Bray was a full house hit, and a slideshow of the concert can be viewed on the same page of the website or on Facebook. The concert was followed by a very pleasant dinner at the Peachland Legion restaurant.

Our friends from the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra and Kelowna Community Music School will be back with another concert in the Peachland Art Gallery on Saturday, April 6, with dinner at the Gasthaus on the Lake restaurant. This time a new musician has been added to the group, classical guitarist, Alan Rinehart. Four students will be playing – three on violin and one on cello – for an ensemble of seven. The programme will include works by Vivaldi, Bach, Paganini, Haydn, Stradella, and more! Tickets and the Gasthaus menu will shortly be available from the Gallery.

This Friday, March 8, women around the world will be celebrating International Women’s Day, as will we in Peachland. The PCAC is sponsoring two events to which male and female members are invited. Both are at the Peachland 50 Plus Activity Centre – High Tea from 2 pm to 4:30 pm featuring speakers, Renee Wasylyk, Nancy McDonald and Susan Haglund, then Wine and Cheese from 7 to 9:30 pm with Meena Cleland, Beryl Itani and Geneva Ensign-Langin. This is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. This year’s campaign theme of #Balance for Better is a call-to-action for driving gender balance across the world. These six women have been invited to share their life experiences and contributions to their communities. Monies raised from the donations-for-admission will be contributed to a scholarship for a deserving female graduate.

Captured Images 2019 the exhibition of 68 fine art images captured by 30 fine art Okanagan photographers is currently on display at the Peachland Art Gallery until March 31. It’s the longest running in the Valley and is particularly worth a visit since it contains the works of some of the most notable photographers in the Valley. Drop in if you haven’t already. You’ll be pleased you did. Images of the opening can be viewed on the Gallery Facebook page.

Peachland Art Gallery coordinator, Janet Hornseth is already planning ahead for the 2020 season and sending out a CALL FOR 2020 EXHIBITION PROPOSALS. If you are an individu-

al artist, member of a group of artists, curator or non-profit organization who would like to be juried for consideration as an exhibition at the gallery next year, please read the requirements on the website at the underlined link and/ or download the attached PDF file. The deadline for exhibition proposals is Friday, September 27, 2019.

The Central Okanagan Foundation offers a $1,500 scholarship to Peachland youths who are volunteers and who are about to pursue post-secondary education in the coming year. If you know of any student who would benefit from such a scholarship be sure to let them know of this opportunity. The grant also applies to students living in West Kelowna, Kelowna, and Lake Country.

Ever thought of sipping on a glass of wine while painting en plein air in the heart of France’s wine country? With “Sip & Paint in the South of France” perhaps you could have that experience. This fall Sallie and Malcolm Johnson are offering artists of all levels, photographers, wine lovers and others that very opportunity – a tentative itinerary for September 4 to September 14, 2019. You’ll have daily opportunities for painting, sketching, scrapbooking, journal writing, photographing and exploring whatever your passion in a variety of beautiful settings. PCAC member Maureen Warner has extended her teaching of Paverpol sculpture to the Summerland Arts Centre, specifically, Saturday, March 16, 9 to 5 pm at $125 per person. You will be able to create a beautiful figurine perfect for display indoor or outdoors.

The Okanagan Jazz and Blues Society has announced that The Kirk MacDonald Quartet featuring the legendary Harold Mabern will be there on Monday, April 8 at 7:30 pm (doors open at 6:30). Acclaimed Toronto based Saxophonist/Composer Kirk MacDonald is touring Western Canada with the legendary American pianist Harold Mabern and is joined by bassist Kieran Overs and Vancouver drummer Jesse Cahill. This will be a truly powerful and unique concert that has wowed sold out audiences throughout Canada and recently at NYC Lincoln Centre’s “Dizzy’s Club, Coca-Cola”. Not to be missed!

The dates for the 42nd annual BC Interior Jazz Festival 2019 held in Kelowna are now set for April 11 to 13 and the featured artist is Mike Murley – an engaging, lyrical saxophonist and one of Canada’s most celebrated and well-respected jazz artists. The Kelowna Film Society film originally scheduled for this Wednesday, March 6 at the Orchard Plaza Cinema

at 4 and 7 pm has been replaced by Anthropocene: the human epoch. This is a film that shows how human activity has damaged our world but also how what we’ve done to it can be repaired - that there is hope. Six continents and twenty countries were visited in the filming of this documentary. The co-director, Jennifer Baichwal will be in attendance at both screenings to answer questions. Cost: $7 per person plus a one time $1 annual membership fee if not already a member. The following Wednesday, a German film The Silent Revolution with English sub-titles will be screened. Based on a true story the film follows the accumulating effects when high school students in East Germany react to the Russian repression of Hungary’s 1956 revolution.

Prior to the building of the Berlin Wall, the students learn the truth behind the invasion and its human costs and stage a two-minute silence in solidarity with the victims of the revolution. Their actions involve their teacher, principal, families and ultimately the highest echelons of the state. The film touches on youthful idealism, political oppression, rebellion, official reaction and the power of an unchecked state.

This film is the last of the winter series.
