Downtown revitalization on hold for now Joanne Layh Editor, Peachland View Last week between 125 and 150 people attended TNI president Steve Allison’s open house to hear why, in Allison’s view, the proposed TNI building project is not moving ahead as planned. Earlier this year Allison unveiled plans to tear down the Edgewater and Aegean Grill buildings on Beach Avenue and replace them with a fourstorey building that would contain a mix of residential, retail, and commercial office space. The zoning bylaw for the building reached third reading and very likely would have received final approval by district council. However, in the week the project was scheduled to receive final approval, Allison requested it be withdrawn from the council agenda, which has

effectively put a halt on the project for now at least. In a series of ads and at his open house presentation, Allison offered the public some reasons why he no longer wants to go ahead with the project, the primary one being an $13,295 amenity contribution charge from the district that he did not consent to pay. At his open house event, Allison also took people through a variety of cost calculations to demonstrate that downtown revitalization is unfeasible enough without amenity contributions. “The fact that it [downtown development] hasn’t happened in 40 years without an amenity contribution is telling you something and to add that on top of it is in my mind insane…if they had ever asked me I would have Continued on page 3
