Do you know an outstanding volunteer, athlete, artist, business person in the community? If yes, nominate them today for a Spirit of Peachland Civic Award.

How to Nominate: 1. Write a nomination letter 3. Provide 1-3 letters of support Selections will be based on the nominee’s achievements and contributions for the year of 2014.

As well, each year the District recognizes (upon request) the following milestones: • Wedding Anniversary: Peachland Residents celebrating their 50, 60 or 70th wedding anniversary.

• Freedom of the Municipality: Peachland Residents who have reached their 100th birthday or to residents who have lived in Peachland for more than 75 years.

Message from the Director: We had such an exciting winter with so many new folks coming in to get active and be inspired. Our 2:1 Adult program was a great success so we want to offer you the same deal again. Register for West Coast Swing, Stroller Fit, Lambly Loop Fitness Circuit, or Functional Fitness before March 20th and you can register a second person into the same program for FREE. This is a great way to schedule a date with your favourite friend, spouse, parent or adult child!

The Mayor’s Task Force on Climate Change Local governments across the province are taking action to address the often devastating effects that climate change can have on communities. The easiest and most cost effective way to do this is to attempt to minimize the impact of climate change through action as opposed to reaction. This means that reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions through GHG reduction initiatives is imperative if major shifts in the world’s climate leading to costly clean up and rebuilding are to be avoided. Initiated in 2011, the Mayor’s Task Force is just one way that the District is finding to address this very important issue.

The Mayor’s Task Force meets on the last Wednesday of every month and provides feedback to Council regarding climate programs and initiatives that the District may undertake.

The committee meetings are open to anyone who may wish to attend. For more information contact Planning and Development Services at 250-767-2647.

ACCESS TO RECREATION Canadian Tire Jump Start Program The Canadian Tire Jump Start program provides financially disadvantaged children in Canada with the opportunity to participate in sport and recreational activities.

Criteria to apply for the Jump Start program includes: • To be eligible, children must be between the ages of 4 and 18; • Funding preference is to pay for registration fees with consideration to fund equipment costs or transportation costs on a case by case basis;

• Sport or recreational activity must include physical activity; • Funding should be for a sustained program that is either a minimum of five weeks duration with a minimum of one session per week or, in the case of sport camps, five consecutive days; • Funding goes to individuals, not to teams; and • Up to $400 per child can be issued per year.

Applications can be picked up at the Community Centre or downloaded online at www.peachland.ca under Recreation Programs.

Join us for playtime, crafts, snacks and songs! Children will experience play, social interaction, and you – the caregiver – get an opportunity to meet other families and add some strategies to your parenting tool box.

Caregiver participation is required. Monthly schedules are available at the Community Centre and through Bridge Youth and Family Services. No program Mar 13, 20, Apr 3 and May 1.

Hop into spring and enjoy face painting, spring crafts, and build and decorate your very own basket to use to collect Easter Eggs. We may even see the Easter Bunny! Please note that the registration deadline (250.767.2515) is Mar 31.

Tweens will meet at 3pm at the Elementary bike racks and come back to the Club where we will hang out, have a snack and then go next door to the Community Centre to play active games and sports.

Your child will learn to swim and stay safe in a fun environment that promotes a personal best and celebrates individual success. Our small class sizes in the beautiful Okanagan Lake make it an unique swim experience.

Classes may be re-organized to ensure that children are participating at the most appropriate skill level.

In the beginner levels, children will focus on getting comfortable in the water, water safety and will learn progressions that will lead to stroke development in the higher levels. As the children progress, they will learn both competitive and survival strokes while building their distance and speed. Children will also learn about making safe decisions in, on and around the water.

In each level, participants are evaluated based on performance criteria and progress to the next level once all criteria have been successfully completed.

Swimming is a great way to be active, and if learning to swim has been on your “List”, then now is the time to try! Under the supervision of trained staff, you will learn techniques and skills to help you get comfortable in the water and introduce you to the basics of swimming.

You will learn lifesaving techniques as well as develop your leadership and swimming skills.

This course is the first step in training to be a lifeguard. Participants must have ability to swim 800 meters with confidence.

Learn how to be a lifeguard at a beach or in a waterfront situation and become qualified for employment opportunities here at Swim Bay. Candidates must already be trained in the NLS pool option and have a current CPR Level C.

2015 SPRING/SUMMER PROGRAM GUIDE The Okanagan Boys & Girls Clubs has been a leading provider of programs to children, youth and families since 1959. Our programs and services support the healthy physical, educational and social development of over 7,000 young people and families in 33 clubs and service locations throughout the Okanagan Valley. As a member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada, the Okanagan Boys & Girls Clubs help young people grow healthy, happy and safely from birth to adulthood, and are a resource and support for parents throughout their family’s involvement with us. Preschoolers will develop & practice social and language skills, cooperative play, independent thinking & an awareness of self. For those who qualify, Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs offer tuition sponsorships. Classes for 3 and 4 year olds are available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Looking for fun activities to do this summer? We’ve got you covered! Members will participate in crafts, sports, cooking, games and out trips throughout the Okanagan Valley. A nutritious afternoon snack is provided. Members in the Daycamp Program will be going on two out trips each week – more detailed out trip information will be available in June.

The Peachland Youth Center drop-in programs and special events offer free supervised recreational activities five days per week. Activities include: Free afternoon snacks and dinner nights, Pool and ping pong table, Sony Play Station 3, computers/Internet access, movies, music, cards & board games & out-trips to local attractions!

Flow Yoga

Peachland Recreation Pickleball

Welcome to Peachland Pickleball. Peachland Recreation endeavours to provide a variety of recreational and competitive play opportunities to Peachland residents and guests. Volunteers support the Pickleball program by helping manage the day to day operation of the program. Please choose a program below best suited for you. Ranking is based on IFP Pickleball Rating system.

Volunteers can also assist you in finding out your rating. A brief description is below; however, for a detailed description, please see the recreation staff or volunteers.

Rating 1.0-3.0 • Minimal to no knowledge of the game • Can sustain short rally with player of equal ability • Some knowledge of court positions • Developing basic shots (forehand, backhand, volley, overhead and serve) Rating 3.0-4.0 • Consistent on serve and service return for medium and faster paced balls • Improved skills with basic shots and developing shot placement skills including direction and depth control • Beginning to anticipate opponent’s shot and attempt lob and dinks with little success • Exhibits some aggressive net play Rating 4.0-5.0 • Consistent and dependably strokes including directional control and depth on both forehand and backhand shots • Reliable serves, lobs, overheads, approach shots and volleys and can use a spin shot with some success • Anticipates a shot and regularly can hit a winning shot • Forces an opponent into making errors • Aggressive net play and teamwork in doubles

Liquid Lightning Swim Club is running two six-week swim camps this summer for beginner swimmers. All camps will be held at Johnson-Bentley Memorial Aquatic Centre.

Pre-competitive Green Camp AGES: 5-8 YEARS

Perfect for swimmers who can comfortably swim 25 metres on their front or back or who have completed Red Cross Level 4. Camp schedule: 2 days/week.

Pre-competitive Red Camp AGES: 8-12 YEARS

Perfect for swimmers who can comfortably swim 50 metres on their front or back or who have completed Red Cross Level 5. Camp schedule: 3 days/week.

These programs are eligible for the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit.

Regional Parks Programs & Events Spring Break Camps

Half-day camps at Mission Creek Regional Park, full of outdoor activities and nature discovery for youth ages 5 to 7. Call to preregister. Cost is $60 for each three-day session. 9am-noon. March 17-18-19 or March 24-25-26.

Grand Opening events May 2nd at Mission Creek Regional Park (Hall Road Pond) and May 3rd at Shannon Lake Regional Park, 10am-3pm both days. Then, every Saturday and Sunday until June 14th Regional Parks Interpreters will be at both parks 10am-3pm to help children 15 & under learn to fish. 1 fish per day limit, no fishing license required.

Explore your Parks

Enjoy a guided walk in a Regional Park. Park Interpreters will highlight special features in the various parks you’ll visit. Outings start at 10am and range from 1.5 to 2 hours long. These walks are held in conjunction with the Community Recreation Initiatives Society (CRIS) to provide barrier-free access to Regional Parks. Their services are available upon request for the Take a Hike program.

Peachland Historic Primary School Located at 5684 Beach Ave, the Historic Peachland Primary School is home to the Peachland Chamber of Commerce, Peachland Visitor Centre, Legends of the Lake Interpretive Centre, Okanagan Boys and Girls Club and the Peachland Art Gallery.

The 1908 primary school had been home to generations of children in Peachland until it closed in 2003. This rejuvenated iconic community asset will provide for local children and youth programming as well as provide an accessible location for recreation, arts, cultural and social programming for all ages. Community rentals are also available.

Peachland Art Gallery Located in the Mary Smith Hall at the Peachland Historic Primary School, the Peachland Art Gallery is a volunteer artist-run community gallery hosted by the Peachland Community Arts Council (PCAC). The Arts Council is dedicated to providing this beautiful space to local and regional artists. This all-inclusive space welcomes displays by painters, photographers, sculptors, fabric artists, potters, dancers, singers and more. There are plans to host musical performances, literary readings and other art related events throughout the year. Artrelated rentals will be considered by the PCAC upon request. Everyone is welcome.

Peachland Ambassadors Program

The Ambassadors are holding a Little Buddies Tea on Sunday, April 12 from 2-4 at the Community Centre for children from kindergarten to grade 3 (see p. 5 for details). The Mothers Day Tea and Fashion Show will be held on May 10 and the Ambassadors Speech competition and Brunch will be held on August 9. The Boxing Club meets on Mon & Wed 6-8 pm at 4th Street Place, September through June. 4th Street Place is equipped with a boxing ring where youth 11-18 years of age will get fit while learning counter-punch style boxing, good healthy respect for others, as well as developing both confidence and character. Seniors and Adults 50+ Activity Centre

Located at 5672 Beach Avenue, the Activity Centre is operated by the Peachland & District Retirement Society, offering programs for the enjoyment & well being of its members.

Membership in the PDRS is $15 per year, and enables those 50 years of age and over to participate in all activities. The Centre is available for rental for such occasions as wedding receptions, dances, banquets, etc.; rates vary with times booked. For information on membership, activities or rentals, please call 250.767.9133 or drop in and pick up a schedule. Office hours are weekday mornings from 9:30-11:30 am.

Wellness Centre
