Message from the Director: Two years in a row, Okanagan Lake has flooded. Although the 2018 season was not as significant as 2017, there are impacts. The last two flood seasons have shown us that Peachland’s shoreline has critical areas of erosion. It will take years for the District to recover completely and adequately protect our shoreline against future flood events. Both cost and resource opportunities limit our ability to expedite these projects. However, the District continues to take a pragmatic approach to both recovery and future planning to make the shoreline a place for all Peachland residents and guests to enjoy.

This fall, we are excited to launch extended hours at the Community Centre. This allows us to adjust our daily schedule to not only accommodate the ever growing Pickleball demand but to also allow for some new programs and services. We have many programs to keep you active. If you see a gap in our services or want to offer programs, please contact Ben at 250-767-2133 and he will be happy to discuss your ideas with you. If you are new to our fitness programs or fitness room, your first day is always FREE. We hope you will come by and give us a try.

General Local Election The District of Peachland Council consists of a Mayor and six Councillors. BC Local Government term of office is 4 years. The next Local General Election is October 20, 2018. Prospective candidates must be nominated by 2 eligible electors from Peachland.

Our programs and services support the healthy physical, educational and social development of over 1,300 young people and families every day in 42 clubs and service locations throughout the Okanagan Valley. As a member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada, the Okanagan Boys & Girls Clubs help young people grow healthy, happy and safely from birth to adulthood and are a resource and support for parents throughout their family’s involvement with us. The Peachland Youth Center drop-in programs and events offer free supervised recreational activities five days per week. Activities include: free afternoon snacks, dinner nights, pool and ping pong table, video games, computers and Internet access, movies, music, crafts, cards & board games and out-trips to local attractions!

Twinkle Tour Friday, December 14 4-8pm FREE Join us for a lovely winter evening on the Club bus as we drive around looking at Christmas light displays. We will finish off with a snowman building contest and hot chocolate at Heritage Park. Spaces are limited, be sure to register early.

Winter Break Drop In programs During the holiday season we will be offering a variety of exciting activities for children and youth. Watch for our winter break calendar available in late November.

Early & Middle Childhood Programs Peachland Preschool (ages 3 to 5) 250-768-3049 - 5486 Clements Crescent Our preschools provide children with a program where they will be encouraged to explore, learn, and grow in a stimulating and fun environment. Preschoolers will develop and practice social and language skills, cooperative play, independent thinking and an awareness of self. For those who qualify, Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs offer tuition sponsorships. Classes for 3 year olds are available on T & Th. Classes for 4 year olds are available M, W & F.

After School Club (grades K-6)

The After School program takes place at the Okanagan Boys and Girls Club in Peachland (5684 Beach Ave) from 2:30-6:30pm for children in grades Kindergarten to Grade 5. Our programs are designed to provide a safe, nurturing, inclusive environment where children will be engaged in activities including creative arts, sports, personal growth, and life skills development. Transportation is provided from Peachland Elementary and a nutritious snack is served daily. Programs are also available on professional days and school breaks. *Pre-registration is required.

Kid Food Nation (Grades 2-6) Kid Food Nation is a Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada National Program.

This 8 week program aims to improve children’s health by teaching food skills and enhancing food literacy in a fun and interactive way. Spots are limited; please apply by contacting the Club.

Peachland Recreation Pickleball

Peachland Recreation endeavours to provide a variety of recreational and competitive play opportunities to Peachland residents and guests. Volunteers support the Pickleball program by helping manage dayto-day operation. Please choose a rating below best suited for you. Ranking is based on IFP Rating system. Volunteers can also assist you in finding out your rating. A brief description is below; however, for a detailed description, please see the recreation staff or volunteers.

Rating 1.0-2.5 • Minimal to no knowledge of the game • Can sustain short rally with player of equal ability • Some knowledge of court positions • Developing basic shots (forehand, backhand, volley, overhead and serve)

Rating 3.0-3.5

• Consistent on serve and service return for medium and faster paced balls • Improved skills with basic shots and developing shot placement skills including direction and depth control • Beginning to anticipate opponent’s shot and attempt lob and dinks with little success • Comfortable with aggressive net play

Rating 3.75+

• Aggressive play and teamwork in doubles • Consistent and dependable strokes including directional control and depth on both forehand and backhand shots • Reliable serves, lobs, overheads, approach shots and volleys and can use a spin shot with some success • Anticipates a shot and can regularly hit a winning shot • Forces an opponent into making errors

The Peachland Historic School

Facility Rentals

Located at 5684 Beach Ave, the Peachland Historic School is home to the Peachland Chamber of Commerce, Peachland Visitor Centre, Legends of the Lake Interpretive Centre, Okanagan Boys and Girls Club and the Peachland Art Gallery. The 1908 primary school had been home to generations of children in Peachland until it closed in 2003. This rejuvenated iconic community asset provides for local children and youth programming as well as an accessible location for recreation, arts, cultural and social programming for all ages. Community rentals are also available.

Peachland Art Gallery

Located in the Mary Smith Hall at the Peachland Historic School, the Peachland Art Gallery is a volunteer artist-run community gallery hosted by the Peachland Community Arts Council (PCAC). The Arts Council is dedicated to providing this beautiful space to local and regional artists.

This all-inclusive space welcomes displays by painters, photographers, sculptors, fabric artists, potters, dancers, singers and more. Musical performances, literary readings and other art-related events are hosted throughout the year.

Peachland Recreation Guide Fall 2018

The Boxing Club meets on Mon & Wed 6-8 pm at 4th Street Place, September through June. 4th Street Place is equipped with a boxing ring where youth 11-18 years of age will get fit while learning counter-punch style boxing and good healthy respect for others as well as developing both confidence and character. Seniors and Adults 50+ Activity Centre

Located at 5672 Beach Avenue, the Activity Centre is operated by the Peachland & District Retirement Society, offering programs for the enjoyment and wellbeing of its members.

Membership in the PDRS is $15 per year and enables those 50 years of age and over to participate in all activities. The Centre is available for rental for such occasions as wedding receptions, dances, banquets, etc.; rates vary with times booked. For information on membership, activities or rentals, please call 250.767.9133 or drop in and pick up a schedule. Office hours are weekday mornings from 9:30-11:30 am.

Wellness Centre

Dedicated to the provision of services and programs that benefit the individual and the community, the Wellness Centre provides a variety of weekly programs such as Sunday breakfasts, skill development and social and support programs. For more information call 250.767.0141.

General Registration Information

• Appropriate program selection and registration are the responsibility of the person registering for the program.

• Participants can transfer from one program to another only if space is available.

• Prorated refunds will be issued at the time/date of notification. There is a 20% processing fee on class withdrawals unless the withdrawal is accompanied by a statement from a medical doctor.

• All classes are subject to cancellation due to insufficient registration, instructor availability, inclement weather or non-availability of facilities. In these cases, a full or prorated refund will be issued.

• Class sizes are limited and are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.

• Classes have both minimum and maximum numbers of participants required. Please register early.

• The District reserves the right to fill a class with drop-in spots 5 minutes after the regular start time.

Your satisfaction is important to us. Should you be unsatisfied with a program or service we offer, a refund may be issued at the discretion of management.
