Albas, who ran for the Conservative Party of Canada against Liberal Karley Scott, New Democratic candidate Angelique Wood and the Green Party’s Robert Mellalieu, is back for a second term as Member of Parliament in the riding of Central Okanagan-Similkameen-Nicola with 24,425 votes, narrowly beating out Scott who garnered 23,028 votes. by Wood with 11,939 votes and Mellalieu with 2,428 votes.

A local taxi service for Peachland could be a possibility in 2016 tnichols@aberdeenpublishing.com

A local businessman wants to start a taxi company in Peachland.

Mark Tissing, a Dutch immigrant who has been living in Peachland for three years, says there is a “definite need” for a local taxi service in town, and he wants to be the one to provide it.

Tissing spoke to the Committee of the Whole Oct. 13, asking council to add its voice in support of a local taxi service.

He explained that after more than two weeks of surveying and interviewing Peachland residents, he already has letters of support from the Peachland Chamber of Commerce and several community members.

“We can say with-

out a doubt that a taxi service in Peachland would be of great benefit for the residents of Peachland and could serve different market segments,” the liberally bolded chamber letter reads.

While council can’t directly support a specific business, it did agree to write a general letter stating its support for a local taxi company in town.

“It’s a role of coun-

cil to be in support of any business that wants to sort of sprout up and take a leap of faith in Peachland. I believe there’s a definite need for a local taxi,” Coun.

Mike Kent told him.

“I fully support your concept. And I know we cannot [directly] support you, I personally support you; you are the right person for it,” added Coun. Keith Thom.

Tissing said that,

although there is support for the idea in Peachland, he needs approval and permits from the Ministry and Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) in order to start the business.

Letters of support will help his cause.

Tissing is still in the early stages of the process, but said he plans to present business plan to the MOTI in December.

Albas’s colleague Ron Cannan, who has represented the residents of Kelowna-Lake Country in Ottawa for the past three years, wasn’t so lucky.

In a reflection of the national trend, the former city councillor, who has been an MP since 2006, lost his seat to Liberal victor Stephen Fuhr.

Fuhr, a retired military pilot, said he is proud to be part of what has been called a stunning political comeback that saw Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau ride the red wave of resentment toward Stephen Harper all the way to a majority government.

The Tories ended the evening with 99 seats and 31.9 per cent of the popular vote, the NDP with 44 seats (19.7 per cent), the Bloc Québécois with 10 seats (4.7 per cent) and the Greens with one seat and 3.5 per cent support, leaving the Liberals with 39.5 per cent of the popular vote.

Despite his win, Albas told The View he personally had mixed feelings about the national results, but concedes that the Canadian electorate “got it right.”

“Tonight, democracy has spoken,” he told reporters on Monday night.

“I’m a big believer in democracy and the people are never wrong,” he told the crowd.

Though optimistic about his own political future, the married father of four admitted he was somber about the Conservatives losing a majority government.

be for many conservatives and people who supported the prime minister’s vision...this is Canada, and Canada is great because of our democracy,” he pointed out.

“Canadians have had stable, strong government ever since the prime minister took office in 2006, but clearly people wanted change and to go in a different direction. As parliamentarians, we have to respect that.”

Albas added that he was honoured to see that his constituents had so much faith in him.

“It’s deeply humbling to be re-elected as the Member of Parliament for Central Okanagan-Similkameen-Nicola. And even more so on an evening when so many very good people from all sides of the house were not returned to Ottawa, for what will be the 42nd parliament.”

And though he is one of only 99 Tory MPs to return to Ottawa when parliament resumes, Albas said his new position on the other side of the room won’t affect his ability to get the necessary federal funds to

“I’ve had success working with ministers of the Conservative government because I’ve made a good business case for why [federal] investments were important,” Albas told reporters after a brief victory speech.

“Any government is going to have to make sure they’re paying attention to those constituents.”

When the people speak, he added, the government should listen. That was a message local NDP candidate Angelique Wood received “loud and clear” on Monday when she saw her party leader Tom Mulcair, who’d aspired to lead Canada’s first NDP federal government, lose the party’s official Opposition status, with the party dropping to 42 seats after entering the election with 95.

Mulcair, however, managed to hold on to his Montreal seat, along with Green party leader Elizabeth May who was also re-elected on Vancouver Island.

Dear Ms. Polak, Thank you for your response to my letter this past summer. In your reply, you outlined what the province of British Columbia is doing to protect us from an infestation of zebra and quagga mussels.

None of this was new information, and all together, it is still not enough.

You did recognize that “there is still work to be done.” I couldn’t agree more.

With the expertise gained from a year of full-time research on this issue, I again urge you to act immediately and decisively.

Last week, news broke out of Manitoba that after only two years, Lake Winnipeg is already seeing an infestation of epic proportions. In the words of University of Winnipeg professor Dr. Eva Pip, as reported by Global News, “The problem is irreversible and in fact it’s a catastrophe, it’s a disaster. It’s very sad because all we have to look forward to now in Lake Winnipeg is a complete and eventual collapse of our ecosystem.” This is not unexpected news, but still it is an urgent reminder of the danger that B.C. faces.

In your letter, you spoke of a “perimeter defence” strategy to protect all of

Western Canada and the Columbia Basin. The wisdom of this plan is clear, but it is still very far from completion.

Saskatchewan is doing practically nothing. Alberta has mandatory inspections at their eastern border, but those inspections only run during regular working hours. A very real scenario still exists where a contaminated boat could cross through Alberta after the inspectors have gone home for the day, slip past one of B.C.’s “roving” teams, and launch in our waters. Until such time as this perimeter defence is fully in place, you must have an unbroken wall at our border.

Whether you are coordinating with other jurisdictions or not, a system of rendezvousing with potentially infested boats after they have entered BC is illogical and irresponsible. The only acceptable system for protecting our province is stopping and inspecting 100 per cent of boats before they enter our province.

When can we expect to see that in place?

Like it or not, Peachland needs to grow I read, with dismay, council’s decision to vote down a rezoning bylaw amendment to allow a 52-unit residential development on Trepanier Bench Road.

The developer has spent three years working on this proposal, through two readings, tweaking and amending their designs to address concerns.

Now, after three years of work, this mayor and council simply pull the rug out from under the developer.

Is it any wonder Peachland has a well-earned reputation as an incredibly difficult, if not impossible, place to try to develop and do business in?

Interesting that this development fits within the Official Community Plan, only to find out the Plan hasn’t been updated in fourteen years.

When by law, it’s supposed to be updated/reviewed every five years.

I guess it’s very easy to manage growth, if you simply don’t allow it.

Councillor Condon, rather than continually talking about concerns with the safety of the Trepanier Bench/Highway 97 intersection, I challenge you to stop talking, roll up your sleeves and start working on fixing the problem.

We lost the only financial institution in town as the customer base wasn’t large enough to support its continuing existence here. If we don’t enlarge the town’s customer base we’ll not see another.

In recent past editions of The View the citizens of Peachland were told we are going to need in the neighborhood of 18 million dollars for a water treatment plant.

A consulting firm retained by the town has indicated a substantial increase in property taxes will be required to fund expected infrastructure repairs over the next twenty years.

I dare say all those who want to close the doors to Peachland development will be aghast when they see our taxes rise. Although many of those will no longer be living here.

We have a problem – this town’s tax base isn’t big enough. We need to grow our tax base.

Stop chasing away companies looking to invest in this community.

Stop figuring out how you can divert travellers, who will spend money in this town, around this town.

To the mayor and councillors – you are the leaders of this town. You need to have the courage to start thinking bigger and think of Peachland’s future. The decisions you make today will affect this town for years to come – whether we will thrive and prosper or wither and die.

I’m not a builder or developer, simply a concerned Peachland resident.

AccuWeather predicting warmest winter on record Dry, mild conditions to dominate season in the prairies VIEW STAFF Global online weather forecasting service AccuWeather reports the winter of 20152016 could end up as one of the warmest winters on record for Canada as a whole, if a strong El Niño persists into the upcoming season.

Western Canada residents should expect another winter with above to well above-normal temperatures, as a prevailing westerly flow delivers milder Pacific air across the region.

Compared to last winter, there will be more snow across the coastal mountains of western British Columbia, which includes the Whistler Blackcomb ski resort, host of the 2009-2010 Winter Olym-

pics.

Farther east in the Rockies of eastern British Columbia and western Alberta, snowfall will underachieve this winter. The majority of the snow in this region will fall during the first half of the winter before a drier pattern sets up during January and

February.

Drier and milder weather will be a dominant theme across the prairie region this winter as the polar jet stream gets displaced farther to the north.

This pattern will greatly limit the amount and duration of Arctic air masses that normally impact the region.

Average temperatures could be as much as 3 degrees Celsius (5.5 degrees Fahrenheit) above normal this winter in cities such as Edmonton, Calgary and Regina.

Significant snowfall events will be few and far between across the region as the primary storm track will generally remain farther south across the central and southern U.S.

Kelowna RCMP is seeking the “ultimate volunteer” VIEW STAFF

The Kelowna RCMP Auxiliary Constable Program is looking for Okanagan citizens, of good character, interested in becoming the “ultimate volunteer” and is now accepting applications to the program.

As volunteers, under the command of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, officials say their primary purpose is to participate in community policing service activities relating to public safety and crime prevention.

Auxiliary constables must contribute 160 hours of volunteer time per year and participate in community policing programs and, in a support role, ride on patrol with uniformed police officers.

According to the program’s coordinator, Bill Finney, auxiliary constables gain valuable knowledge and expertise in order to deliver crime prevention and community

policing programs to the public, while providing a local perspective to policing in the community they serve.

The auxiliary constable course consists of approximately 150 hours of training. The training course is run over a five-month period and is held on consecutive Saturdays, however it may include other periods throughout the week.

Council Briefs VIEW STAFF Restaurant pergolas remain on trial basis Council voted to indefinitely extend its sidewalk encroachment agreement to provide a trial period for restaurant owners looking to keep their outdoor pergolas up all winter. This means restaurant owners will be allowed to leave the coverings that span district sidewalks up over the winter, rather than dismantling them ahead of the snow. The extension was given under the assumption that information will be collected over the winter and a full review completed in the spring of 2016. The indefinite extension leaves the timeline of the project deliberately vague, so council can instruct owners to take down the pergolas at any time during the winter if they are deemed unsafe. Coun.

Mike Kent voted in opposition to the motion, expressing concerns that the pergolas were initially designed as temporary structures, and if year-long structures are desired they should be constructed specifically for that purpose.

Unfinished road given to Habitat for Humanity Council gave first, second and third reading to Bylaw No. 2063, which will close the unfinished section of Sanderson Ave. and hand it over Waste to Habitat for HuHazardous newspaper manity.

The 893 square metre portion of highway will be given to the organization in exchange for a similar sized piece of land that will facilitate future widening at the existing intersection of Princeton Ave. and Sanderson Ave. The will make it easier for Habitat for Humanity to begin construction of a third house at its current construction site off of Princeton Ave.

Property rezoned to allow suite

Council gave first and second reading to a bylaw amendment that will rezone a piece of private property, allowing the owner to construct a building consisting of a main home and on-site suite connected by a continuous breezeway.

The property at 4656 Minto St. is currently zoned RR-1 (Rural Residential), which does not allow for a secondary suite, and the rezoning to RR1S (Rural Residential Secondary Suite) will allow the owner to create the suite, so long as it is part of the main dwelling.

The decision is a definitive step in a process complicated by the fact that the building sits on a septic bed, which necessitated a creative interpretation of “single dwelling” to conform to zoning rules ahead of a development process review that will change zoning bylaws.

Something just wasn’t right. The elderly woman who had initially come into the 50+ Activity Centre in Peachland seeking assistance with what Anita Desjardins calls “a personal struggle,” was in trouble.

As the weeks passed and the woman returned to the centre each week to volunteer, Desjardins, a former emergency room nurse who currently works as the programs and services assistant for the local non-profit organization, noticed the woman had begun to grow visibly thinner.

“Her pants were getting looser and beginning to hang off her hips. She didn’t have any energy,” she explains, flattening herself against the bar at the Beach Avenue Café and Tapas on Oct. 16 as servers bustle by carrying piping hot plates of food to distribute to the roomful of more than 50 hungry patrons gathered at the local spot for the Shepherd’s Pie Cook-off fundraiser, the proceeds of which have been allocated to help the local woman Desjardins has been describing.

The event, now in its second installment, was organized by Desjardins and municipal councillor Keith Thom, with the support of the Peachland Wellness Centre, Beach Avenue Café, local volunteers and sponsors Homestead Organic Farms, Sysco Foods and Effective Printing.

For $20, supporters were treated to three different variations of shepherd’s pie prepared by three local chefs: Beach Ave. co-owner Jan Udala, Beach Ave. chef Leigh Faust and reigning shepherd’s pie cook-off champion, Keith Thom, who each prepared a Morrocan-inspired pie, a traditional pie and a mushroom-based pie, respectively.

Each guest was given an opportunity to vote on their favourite, with the winner receiving bragging rights and a chance to lead the next challenge.

No matter how weak the woman became, Desjardins says, she returned for her shift

at the wellness centre, never explaining the weight loss or fatigue. Alarmed, Desjardins began asking the woman questions. “I became like a stalker!” she chuckles, her eyes glistening.

“But I knew she needed help and she wasn’t going to ask for it so the only way I could help her was to earn her trust.”

Slowly, Desjardins did gain the woman’s trust and learned that she had been was struggling with some “serious” but undiagnosed medical conditions – she had subsequently become unable to perform at her job and was unemployed.

Without income the woman could not pay her bills or make her mortgage payments and was unable to have her heat turned on, as she had not paid her bill in months.

“When I looked in her kitchen her cupboards were bare. She had been going to the food bank, but they can only give you enough food for a week and that has to last a month. So she had been going hungry. But she wouldn’t ask for anything,” Desjardins said, as her eyes began to well up with tears.

“She has no family here to help either,” she

noted, adding that a consultation with a social worker regarding the woman’s situation left her future looking increasingly grim.

“We were told that she is a few weeks away from losing her home and she won’t really have anywhere to go.”

With the help of the members of her church’s congregation Desjardins began to fundraise to get food in her new friend’s cupboards, and the vitamins into her body that were need to mitigate the weeks of malnutrition.

Desjardins also decided to consult a professional and brought the woman – whose name she said she prefers not to share with The View, “out of respect for the woman’s privacy” – to the doctor where they learned the woman had suffered a stroke, which had caused permanent damage.

“The prognosis was not good,” she continued.

“And she didn’t even really know what had happened to her. It explained why she hadn’t been able to file for any kind of financial assistance See THOM SAYS on page 7

“I think a lot of people out there, particularly those of an older generation, it doesn’t even occur to them to ask. They’re taught to be completely self-sufficient. Asking for anything seems to be out of the question until someone intervenes.”

For Thom, who spent four and half years touring shelters and soup kitchens across Canada in an effort to raise awareness of the issues of surrounding homelessness, addictions and mental illness cases like this one, “strike a chord.”

Shortly after hearing of Desjardins’s mission to get the woman back on her feet, he began his own fundraising, busking around Peachland on Sunday afternoons.

“I raised $92 in one afternoon,” he

said proudly.

“When I said where the money was going to go people just opened their hearts. They wanted to help.

It’s Peachlanders helping Peachlanders, and you know, only two people actually asked who we were raising money for. For most people, just knowing someone needed help was all they needed to hear.”

Thom estimates the woman’s total debt load at the time Desjardins intervened was roughly $4,500 or more. Thanks to Dejardins’s efforts, the necessary paperwork has been filled out to allow the woman to receive a monthly disability pension since she is unable to return to work.

He said the decision to hold the fundraiser on Oct. 16 was to help pay down the bills she had accumulated while she is without an income so that once she finally begins to receive a monthly allowance, she can support herself and not have to put everything toward her debts.

“She has food and we got her heat turned back on, we made sure she has a lifeline and we’re looking for a relative who might be able to help her.

Friday’s event brought in $1,692.

“She just appreciates this so much,” Desjardins says as she surveys the warmly lit room on Friday evening, smiling as Thom, who is positioned in a makeshift stage area with his guitar, launches into his crowd-pleasing rendition of Jim Croce’s Big Bad Leroy Brown.

“It’s touching how people always want to help each other here. You know, it’s one thing to see someone in need, it’s another to get right in there and walk beside them,” she added. “It’s a different feeling.”

Karen was born in New Westminster.

Her interest in music started at three years old and she started taking music lessons at the age of seven; by the time she was in her early teens, she could play various instruments including the accordion, guitar, ukulele, piano and clarinet.

At the age of 12 she won her first talent show and at 14 years of age, started playing in the Lower Mainland coffee houses, gaining great experience in playing before live audiences.

Karen was accepted into the Royal Conservatory of Music’s seven year program. For the first five years, she studied the accordion but in the last two years she switched over to expanding her expertise on guitar. After finding herself a single mom at 19, she put her musical aspirations on hold to become a full-time mom. Although turning to a career as an accountant, she continued to keep her interest in music. At the age of 38, she married her husband Jan. They moved to Peachland in 2005. Karen started writing songs about four years ago, while recovering from some health issues.

In 2011, Karen entered an international song writing competition with worldwide entries. She received the Collective Works Award for that year. Having her songs entered in the Song of The Year competition gave her the chance to get her music heard by two producers from Nashville, who loved her music. For the

past two years, Karen has placed as a semi-finalist in the top one per cent of over 24,000 entries each year. She was one of only two writers who had songs chosen in each category.

At present, she’s had four songs produced in Nashville by two different record labels. The new CD for the “Women in Country” series, was released in 2013 by McClure and Trowbridge Pub-

lishing in Nashville. Two of Karen’s songs were featured on the latest album Some Days- Wings of an Eagle. Both songs were performed by Jenifer Wrinkle, who is one of Reba McIntyre’s back-up singers and duet partner. The two other songs were represented by Pump Records and Jan Cooper Publishing at the Madam World Music Festival in Cannes, France. The songs will be introduced to major record labels, producers and A & R executives in Europe. This is a fantastic opportunity for her songs to be picked up.

Karen is a member of the Canadian Songwriters Association, SOCAN and BC Country Music Association.

She credits them with helping along with advice and even some financial assistance whenever possible.

In the future Karen would like to create a new modern country sound. She will continue writing and playing at senior centres, coffee shops and special events. She readily admits to loving all kinds of music.

Sounds like only good things are ahead for her.

Karen would love to form a regular like-minded jam group in the future.

Poet Laureate visits Peachland during book launch George Harry Bowering describes his new book, Writing the Okanagan, as a love letter to the Okanagan Valley KEITH LACEY

ABERDEEN PUBLISHING One of Canada’s most prolific and decorated authors, poets and historians made a pit stop in Peachland last week to discuss the new book he describes as a love letter to his life growing up it the Okanagan Valley and his recovery from a heart attack that almost killed him six months ago.

George Harry Bowering, who will turn 80 on Dec. 1, was born in Penticton and raised in Oliver, where his father was a high school chemistry teacher and “my hero,” said Bowering, who, along with his wife Jean Baird, paid a visit to discuss his remarkable career at the Peachland Public Library on October 7.

Bowering is the author of more than 100 books and is Professor Emeritus at Simon Fraser University, where he taught for more than 30 years.

In 2002, Bowering was appointed as Canada’s inaugural Canadian Parliamentary Poet Laureate.

The same year, he was awarded the Order of Canada. He was awarded the Order of British Columbia in 2014.

Bowering’s impressive bibliography includes books of fiction, short stories, poetry, poetry collections, criticism, memoirs, history and plays.

After suffering a massive heart attack outside the Point Grey Library on April 21, Bowering was rushed to hospital and placed in an induced coma for 12 days.

He made a remarkable recovery and returned home three weeks days later and started writing his latest novel.

Bowering is featured on the cover of the latest edition of BC Book World, where four recent writing projects he has completed all received rave reviews.

During his presentation at the Peachland library, Bowering said he has nothing but fond memories of growing up in the Okanagan and he wrote Writing the Okanagan after several fans convinced him a book about this region would be a great idea.

The original manuscript for Writing the Okanagan was more than 800 pages and his wife, who works as his editor and publicist, showed great patience over the past two years whittling it down, he said.

There are numerous stories, anecdotes and photos of his parents, who grew up in Peachland, in Writing the Okanagan, said Bowering.

His family moved to Oliver after his father became a teacher at South Okanagan Secondary School, he said.

“When I was a kid, Oliver wasn’t a town, but a village and I was so upset because I wanted it to be a town,” he said smiling.

“My Dad explained to me the village leaders didn’t want to become a town because taxes would go up. Then I understood.”

Bowering wrote for the Oliver Chronicle for many years as a young man and once turned down a job to become editor of that newspaper.

and excellent teacher, but an outstanding athlete and man who built his family home by himself, said Bowering.

“At school I called him Sir and he called me Bowering,” he said smiling.

Bowering became Canada’s first parliamentary poet laureate out of pure luck.

The Canadian Senate had passed a bill 15 years ago stating Canada should have a poet laureate.

“I thought I would be a good poet laureate, so I applied… they picked me,” he said. “That’s about all I know.”

He and Baird moved to Ottawa and he wrote poetry fulltime for two years and thoroughly enjoyed it.

“I was there in Ottawa for two years and I loved it,” he said.

“Being Canada’s poet laureate was a lot of fun even though you don’t get paid much.”

When community leaders in Oliver found out one of their own had attained such a prestigious title, they threw a huge dinner in his honour more than 10 years ago.

He and his wife were given a “barrel of wine…very good wine” that amounted to 25 cases, he said.

“It was the same wine Jean and I ordered for our wedding,” he said.

suffered his heart attack outside the Point Grey Library, said his wife.

“A young Grade 8 student saw him fall and called 911 before he hit the ground,” she said. “The fire department is across the street from the library and fire crews and ambulance were there within six minutes.”

Twenty-one days after his near-fatal heart attack, he was released from hospital and continued writing the day he got out, she said proudly.

While he’s been prolific his entire life, writing four books in six months since the heart attack is quite remarkable, she said.

“He never ceases to amaze me,” she said.

Bowering and his wife just completed an extended tour of libraries across the Okanagan, with the visit to Peachland marking the end of the tour.

They have returned to their home in Vancouver, but have scheduled visits to Winnipeg and Ottawa when the tour continues in a couple of weeks.

Celebrate literacy with National Novel Writing Month in November KEITH LACEY

ABERDEEN PUBLISHING There are too many Canadians to count who talk for years about taking the time to sit down and write their first novel.

For Peachlanders and residents across the Okanagan Valley, a global event that encourages budding writers from around the world to find the time to “produce a rough draft of their first novel” has a local flavour.

The event is called NaNoWriMo, which is short for National Novel Writing Month, which encourages amateur writers of all ages to sit down and write 50,000 words in 30 days throughout the month of November, said Deborah O’Keefe, the newly appointed Okanagan

Region NaNoWriMo municipal liaison.

“This is a fun, s eat- of-you r-pa nt s approach to finally getting that novel written,” said O’Keefe, who lives in and works in Penticton. “Whatever your age, whatever you’re writing, this works!”

Beginning Nov. 1, dozens of Okanagan writers will join nearly 400,000 other participants all over the globe in rolling up their sleeves and pounding out the prose, she said.

This year marks the first year the Okanagan has its own NaNoWriMo region and she’s excited about leading the campaign, said O’Keefe.

“It’s been a long time coming!” she said. “Being our own region means our

‘Wrimos’ will be better connected during the event. To celebrate, we’re having online prize draws for participants throughout November using our new regional forum.”

Both the Vernon Library and the Kelowna Library will host regular “writeins” throughout November where participants can bring their laptops and write together.

Other November write-ins at additional spots throughout the Okanagan are being planned.

NaNoWriMo projects have become published works, including bestsellers Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen and The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.

The event was organized back in 1999

by Chris Batty, a San Francisco-based writer.

“Chris and four friends had talked about writing their own novel for many years,” said O’Keefe.

“In 1999, they finally got together and decided to quit talking and start writing. The five of them co-wrote a book and NaNoWriMo grew from them.”

Participants from as far away as Antartica now sign up for NaNoWriMo, she said.

O’Keefe used to live in the West Kootenay area of B.C. and was upset when she discovered the

Okanagan wasn’t represented in NaNoWriMo activities, she said.

“I was determined to do something to allow the Okanagan to become its own region,” she said. “When you become your own region, you get to host community forums and other events and build up momentum.

She has compiled a lengthy email list of interested citizens across the Okanagan region and many of them have committed to trying to write their first novel beginning the day of November, she said.

O’Keefe is also planning a series of “revision forums” across the Okanagan for those who enter NaNoWriMo. “It will allow them to meet as a group and go about the task of revising the original draft of their novel,” she said.

Vivian Arend from Nelson, who has become a bestselling author, got her start as a writer through NaNoWriMo, said O’Keefe.

There are no judges, no fees and no pressure involved, she said.

“This is just a fun way to quit talking about and start doing something about working on that first novel,” she said. “If you do the math, you have to write 1,667 words a day in November to get to the 50,000 word mark that constitutes the length of the average novel.”

“NaNoWriMo is about getting over the hump and finding the time.”

She expects the write-ins in Kelowna throughout November to attract solid response.

“Sometimes you find inspiration when surrounded by other writers, but this also offers an opportunity to bounce ideas off fellow writers and just get positive feedback,” she said.

Time flies when you’re having fun; at least it does if you’re a member of the Peachland Community Arts Council. The local organization celebrated a banner year on Oct. 17, which also marked exactly one year since the opening of the art gallery in the Mary Smith Hall of the Peachland Historic Primary School. According to PCAC president Deborah Livingstone, the gallery saw 7,038 visitors since opening day. Needless to say the board members are very happy with that number, noted Peachland Art Group President and PCAC director Dian Tompkin.

Tompkin and Livingstone say the PCAC will ramp up its activities this year, beginning with a new Speakers Series on Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. and at 7 p.m. in the Peachland Art Gallery. Guest Richard Smith, a local artist and historian, will give a half hour talk on the history of the pri-

mary school, followed by refreshments and a question and answer period.

The PCAC was formed as an initiative of the Peachland Economic Development Committee (PEDC) in 1997 by Doug Armitage, Mary Armitage, Phyllis Papineau, Anita McConnell, Patricia Riddell, Elsie Parkinson, John Sugars and Dave Walker, and represents approximately 400 artists within its 16 member groups.

Those groups include the Peachland Historical Society, the Peachland Little Schoolhouse, the Peachland Players, the Peachland Art Group, the Sowers & Growers, the Peachland Quilt Guild, the Peachland Variety Singers, the Pincushion Quilt Guild, the Friday Art Club, Valley First Nations Senior Society, the Peachland Fall Fair, Creators Art Centre (children’s dance), Writers Unblocked and Stars on Stage.

Peewee West Kelowna Tiger Cats lose to Kamloops Blue Broncos JEN SCOTT

It was a tough game for the West Kelowna peewee Tiger Cats on Sunday. On Oct. 18 the TiCats travelled to Kamloops to play the Blue Broncos at the Hillside Sportsfield.

The Broncos, currently fifth place in the league standings, were determined to claim a home field victory after being crushed by the Cats 25 - 0 on Oct. 4.

Kamloops began the game with true grit and gained a touchdown early in the first quarter, taking the TiCats by surprise. West Kelowna fought back and managed to knock out a single touchdown before halftime.

Kamloops continued to play a well-executed game in the second half, holding the Tiger Cats firmly out of their end zone and pushing hard against the defensive line.

West Kelowna fought hard to gain the upper hand, but the Broncos were unrelenting and claimed the win with a final score of 31 - 13.

The peewee West Kelowna Tiger Cats travel to Vernon Oct. 25 to play the Magnums in the second to last regular season game.
