Saving taxpayersTagline cash is the The driving factortagline must alw Discovery Computers’ otherwise altered beyond the parameters st behind Peachland municipal council’s recent decision to begin construction of an $18.8 million water treatment plant by 2017. “We just have to rip the Band-Aid off and do this,” Peachland councillor Mike Kent said 1 colour during a special council meeting held on JanPMS 072U uary 19. “If we pay for this now, we know what we’re getting. It will cost the district and the taxpayers less in the long run.” Kent and his newly minted colleagues found themselves in an “unfavourable predicament,” after the Interior Health Authority (IHA) in2 colour PMS 072U formed district staff that the initial water Black treatment strategy outlined in the Water Master Plan developed and endorsed by the agency and council in 2007 would require updates in order to comply with new drinking water stanPM dards. Council contracted Urban Systems Ltd. to Bla conduct a water supply and treatment process feasibility study that would outline their options and allow the district to comply with the objectives, as well as the costs and risks of each option. The study was developed based on the 2012 drinking water treatment objectives outlined in the new updated BC Drinking Water Protection Act, as indicated by the IHA. These objectives, known as the 4-3-2-1-0 objectives, are required to be met in order for Peachland to legally provide drinking water to its residents. See COUNCIL’S on page 2
