Welcome to the September edition of the Peacehaven Directory Our Front cover this month is provided once again by Keith. We are lucky enough to have some lovely weather and our holiday was very relaxing and enjoyable, and much needed. BT Openreach ... a problem no-one wants to solve All the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) lease space in the local telephone exchange. The exchanges, phone lines and general infrastructure were created by the Post Office who then passed them on to British Telecom (BT). To provide an "open" market the infrastructure that originally belonged to British Telecom is managed by an "independent" division called BT Openreach (BTO). The idea was that BTO should treat all ISPs equally and should not be bias to BT or BT customers - this has not happened. BT Openreach is not as free as everyone would like, it still provides a large profit to BT, which influences how it behaves. BTO is accused of under investing to maintain high profits. Some rivals point out it could not afforded to buy EE without the profits BTO generates. Similarly the revenue effectively subsidises BT Sport to buy sports rights. BTO have been particularly controversial in rural areas. Critics accuse BTO of deliberately not upgrading the infrastructure in rural areas where there is a poor, slow service. By delaying improvements which are expensive, it complains that it is a private company being unfairly burdened with high costs of rural upgrades. Eventually local councils, businesses, EU and even BBC funding appears to pick up the bill, while it scoops up the subsequent profits. BTO concentrates its efforts on continually upgrading the so-called "hotspots" - major cities like London, Birmingham and Manchester. Outside the major conurbations it is literally years to ripple out to most exchanges. Other ISPs who have to use the infrastructure are frustrated that new innovative products cannot be launched because the majority of users outside the "hotspots" would not have a sufficiently fast, stable service to make them work. Most commentators think that the only way to make the dysfunctional company work fairly for the benefit of all is to either forcibly spin-off BTO. OFCOM in July stopped short of a complete separation after being persuaded it would take too long and be too disruptive, instead it should become a distinct company within the BT group.

Calling all ladies … How do you fancy joining us? We are Peacehaven NWR, a small friendly bunch of like minded women. We meet in each others’ houses once a fortnight, on Wednesday evenings, for a variety of activities, including listening to music or researching agreed topics or learning a new board game. We have just finalised our programme for the next six months, which includes amongst other fun things, our Christmas (Restaurant) Meal, a Murder Mystery Evening, a discussion on Medical Ethics and a Jewellery party. Last night whilst planning our next programme we drifted into a conversation about using nasturtium petals in salads and in the photo a few of us are looking at the pretty nasturtiums in the garden of one of our members. Our activities are only limited by our own imagination, we would love you to join us so that we can tap into yours. We only have one NWR group in Peacehaven, Seaford has six - if Wednesday is an evening when you are not free, perhaps we could identify another night on which we might form a second group. New Chairman for Haven PEACEHAVEN & TELSCOMBE FC have a new interim chairman. Local man Jez Avens, the former By Pitchside View
chairman of the youth section of the club becomes the interim chairman of the newly formed Peacehaven & Telscombe Community Football Club. Avens, who is deputy managing director of Richer Sounds PLC, the largest independent hi-fi and TV retailer in the country, has been connected with the club for more than twelve years as a coach, manager and chairman of the youth section. He takes control of the newly reformed football club which recently combined the 16 teams which comprise the junior youth section, the under 18 team and the three men’s teams, bringing them all together under the umbrella of one club. Avens said: “I’m honoured to be the interim chairman of the newly formed board which will be running the club for the next 12 months and I’m looking forward to the challenges which lie ahead and helping to steer the club into calmer waters.” He continued: “The last couple of years or so have been extremely difficult for my home-town club. I would like to thank the people who have stepped forward to help ensure football remains in the two towns and also every one of the 91 people who has purchased shares in the club.” “In particular I want to thank Sue Norwood, who has taken up the role of deputy interim chair, for all the
work she has done, especially taking on the role of acting chairman after the death of the club’s former chairman, Brian Suckling in January.” He concluded: “I see exciting times ahead for this football club. Spotlight on The University of the Third Age The University of The Third Age (U3A) was established in Britain in 1981. Its aim is to enable those people who have entered the Third Age to advance and share our knowledge, work experiences and any skill we may have acquired, regardless of our previous educational background. The U3A is a self help organisation. Members with expertise in some activity or field of study are invited to share their knowledge. Thus groups are formed to enjoy many varied activities. The U3A offers the opportunity to pursue learning for sheer enjoyment, for its own sake, form new friendships and share learning experiences on a wide range of interests. The Peacehaven/Newhaven group is a member of SUN (Sussex U3A Network). As well as giving support, they organise additional activities to those provided by individual U3As, such as Study Days, Workshops, Festivals and Events which are open to all our members. The new Study Day Programme is out now for 2016-2017. Do have a look at their website. One of the members told me that “the Newhaven and Peacehaven U3A is great to join. We have a singing group on Monday morning, we meet the first Thursday of every month. We have scrabble etc on Thursday. We will be having our 25�� anniversary get together in October and our Christmas lunch in December. We always have interesting speakers every month, all these are held at the Meridian Centre. We have lunches on Friday and Sunday and there are also lots of Interesting classes for you to join.” If you are interested in becoming a member and accessing these classes and activities please call 01273 589953 to join. Meridian Surgery Information The Meridian Surgery Patient Participation Group (PPG) is holding its AGM on Monday 26th September at 6.30pm till 8pm in the surgery. It's open to all patients and their carers and is a chance to hold the Patient Participation Group to account for the year. (NOT an opportunity to hold the Doctors to account.) The PPG has held a Health Open Morning in June and awareness stalls around Peacehaven. There is a small but growing band of people involved with the group and the AGM is the time when the committee for the next year is elected: those who will continue to build the PPG.
SEAFORD CHORAL SOCIETY CENTENARY SEASON 2016 TO 2017 Choral Society concerts are always a pleasure. The thrill of singing and making music with colleagues in the choir, excellent accompanists and soloists is a great experience. We also know that our loyal audience really appreciate hearing performances of some great works from the choral repertoire. This year is of particular significance for us and the Society is delighted to announce that we have secured the services of Dame Felicity Lott as our guest soloist. She has kindly donated her performance at our Centenary Autumn concert at no charge to the Society, and for this we are enormously grateful. For those of you who do not know, Dame Felicity lives locally and is a world-renowned professional soprano who has for many years performed in operas, operettas, across the globe and has graced the principle opera houses with all the great conductors. She is well known as a concert artist and an experienced recitalist. Having received many honorary doctorates and awards from universities and European governments, in 1990 Felicity was made a CBE and in 1996 she was created a Dame Commander of the British Empire. It is with great pride and pleasure that we welcome Dame Felicity to join us in November, when she will perform solos in both halves of our concert. We are excited to be also joined by young voices from Seaford Primary School, the ‘Semiquavers’ who will sing with the Choral society and also perform their own pieces.

Bridgeford’s Best Bites: Osteopathy Tips (Aether Bios Clinic) (Aether Bios Clinic) Bridgeford’s Best Bites: Osteopathy Tips CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME (CTS) A common condition affecting more women than men of all ages, increasingly with age, particularly affecting menopausal women. CTS causes pain, numbness and a tingling or burning sensation in the hands and fingers; also weakness in the hands and fingers and a dull ache spreading into the forearm. Anatomy: The carpal tunnel is a narrow passage in the wrist between the small carpal bones; it has a tough band of elastic tissue, the carpal ligament across it that supports the movement of the tendons that attach the muscles to the fingers to bend them. The median nerve passes through the armpit, down the arm and through the carpal tunnel to the fingers. Symptoms: Most symptoms are caused by irritation of the median nerves that control movement and sensation in the hands; giving pain, numbness and tingling, mostly in the thumb, index, middle fingers and half of the ring finger. Symptoms usually develop gradually and can tend to be worse first thing in the morning and at night. Other symptoms include dull ache in the arm and hand, swelling and change of skin colour in the hand, weakness and wasting of the muscles, particularly at the base of the thumb. Weakness can affect the grip and cause you to drop things. Symptoms can be aggravated by repetitive movements or by keeping the arm still for a long time. Causes: Compression of the median nerves that control movement and sensation in the hands. Pressure on the nerve can disrupt signals affecting movement and sense of touch. The cause it not always known though it can be related to and the risk increased by repetitive or strenuous use of the hand, such as in playing a musical instrument, manual labour or vibrating tools; injuries to the wrist, pregnancy, family history of CTS, or conditions such as diabetes, underactive thyroid, obesity, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammation and swelling. Diagnosis: Your doctor may tap your wrist to see if you feel tingling or numbness in your fingers; flexing your wrist or holding it above your head for a minute may produce the same symptoms. A blood test may be suggested to rule out diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and hypothyroidism. Nerve conduction tests can measure the nerve transmission and determine any nerve damage, Xray will rule out fractures and ultrasound scan allows examination of the structure of the median nerve. Treatment: Some cases resolve without treatment, self-care may improve the symptoms in others. With pregnancy CTS, symptoms may take 3-12 months to resolve after birth. Mild cases can be helped by non-surgical treatments such as corticosteroid injections or by wearing a wrist support to protect the nerve. Ibuprofen may help relieve inflammation, though there is no evidence to support this as a treatment. Carpal tunnel release surgery may be recommended, particularly to prevent nerve damage; mild cases may have immediate relief of symptoms, severe cases may still take a while to recover. Prevention: Avoid repetitive tasks that aggravate the symptoms. Osteopathic/Manual Management: Take a detailed case history to understand the nature of the problem and surrounding issues. Examine the arm, hand and fingers and all surrounding tissues; muscles, ligaments, nerves, fascia, etc., for movement, strength and functionality and assess nerve pathways. Perform orthopaedic and neurological tests and determine the root cause. Treat to improve strength, functionality and movement and reduce tension, nerve irritation, inflammation, pain and
swelling. Advice regarding use of the hand and wrist, rehabilitation exercises and stretching, wrist splint or taping for support. Treatment may include manipulation, deep soft tissue massage, trigger point therapy, muscle energy techniques, fascial techniques, dry needling, etc. We are happy to advise you on your health matters and offer a free 15 minute joint and spinal check, without obligation.
