Metro builds centre of hope for local addicts NCEBA DLADLA ACCORDING to a survey conducted by the Central Drug Authority from June 2010 to March 2011, substance abuse in the country doubled that of the global average and the country is ranked in the top 10 of highest alcohol abusers. The Department of Social Development and Special Programmes has noted many social ills as a result of substance abuse that engulf the country like HIV/Aids, gender-based violence, child-headed homes, and the abuse of women
and children. According to Social Development and Special Programmes spokesperson Gcobani Maswana, the Eastern Cape (EC) and Nelson Mandela Bay have not been spared from these social ills and without a State Drug Treatment Centre, the province struggled to fight a winning battle against them, According to Maswana, the EC had been referring substance abusers to various treatment centres outside the province. But this will soon change as a State Drug Treatment Centre is currently being construct-
ed. The Department is renovating the former Arthur Nyobo Primary School in Singapi Street, New Brighton, Port Elizabeth to benefit Nelson Mandela Bay residents. “But the establishment of this centre will see many of our people receive treatment quickly and closer to home. This is exciting because there is hope for the Eastern Cape,” said Maswana, adding that through treatment, many people will turn over a new leaf and live better lives. This in turn, according to Maswana, would
impact on other communities. Maswana said, “The state facility would offer a residential programme to substance- abusing children of between 13 and 18 years of age from across the province.” Construction is underway and is expected to be completed in October. The building contractor, Masithembeke Construction, will then hand over the institution to Social Development and Special Programmes to do the official opening in January 2015. The announcement has been hailed by various stakeholders that include the Department of Health, South African Police Service (SAPS), Correctional Services, Non Governmental-Organisations (NGOs) and Victim Support Centres.
