Electricity vending machines for all corners of the Metro LIZEKA TANDWA

V ers.

ENDING machines to purchase electricity will soon be posted throughout the Metro as part of the municipality’s efforts to ease access to electricity for consum-

This was announced at a press conference by newly contracted municipal service providers, Amat, who will embark on a mission to develop strategies that will curb electricity theft. Mayor Benson Fihla, said, “The plan, of which a pilot phase is to be rolled out in the coming weeks, will see illegal users supplied with significantly cheaper ‘interim electricity’ that they will be able to buy by the hour, much in the way that cell phone airtime is bought. Fihla said Vastrap, near Booysens Park, will be the first of several informal settlements to be served by the new alternative provided through the installation of mini solar substations. Other areas to be piloted are Walmer Township and Airport Valley, Rohlihlahla in Missionvale, Silver Town in Kwazakhele, Chris Hani in New Brighton and Struandale, Westville in KwaDwesi, Kliprand in Kleinskool, Riemvasmaak in Bethelsdorp and Kuyga Township near Greenbushes. Amat said their war against cable theft will not only target townships but they will also focus on business and surburbs. “In the past, the municipality has predominantly targeted black areas. This created a lot of friction with the communities. We are aware of the uproar at Walmer townships not so long ago. We want to assure people that we will be targeting all areas and even business,” said Amat Project Manager, Mthu Ntlangani.Amat said among their interventions, they would also introduce a loyalty programme to reward paying customers with incentives and loyalty packages. According to the Municipality, R218 million was lost this past financial year owing to electricity theft. Amat said of that revenue loss, half was lost at businesses and in the suburbs.

“We know there is a problem of wire crossing in the townships and we intend dealing with this issue but we cannot deny that businesses need to play their part to try to curb the

situation. Businesses will also be targeted in this campaign,” said Amat spokesperson, Nceba Faku, a former Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Portfolio head of Budget and Treasury, Balu

Naran, said they had mandated Amat to reduce revenue loss by R50 million each year.

STALEMATE AS LATEST WAGE OFFER IS REJECTED

Numsa to intensify strike action LIZEKA TANDWA

NUMSA said they would, from today, be in-

tensifying their strike in the metal and engineering sector. This announcement follows a meeting that was held yesterday at their national office discussing their next strategic steps to put more pressure on employers. According to Numsa provincial secretary, Phumzile Nodongwe, delegates from each provincial office were in a closed meeting yesterday together with some Cosatu members in a bid to find ways to intensify the strike. Nodongwe said the plan was to implement a programme of solidarity, pulling in Numsa workers at working plants such as VWSA and BMW who had not heeded the call

to strike. According to press statements by BMW and VWSA, production has been running normally since the strike commenced. Plants that have, however, suffered owing to the strike include Ford. Ford has reported that it has temporarily suspending production at one of its plants owing to a strike at some of its suppliers but the local plant would operate normally until further notice. General Motors South Africa (GMSA) shut down its PE plant two weeks ago. According to GMSA Communications Manager, Denise Van Huyssteen, the strike in the metal and engineering sector has impacted upon the supply of components to their production line, resulting in their line not being operational since July 3.

“We need to show employers the seriousness of our demands and we will do so by bringing more members into the strike, intensifying marches of solidarity across the country. We are also in talks with Cosatu in a bid to introduce other unions into our battle against employers,” said Nodongwe. On Sunday July 13, Numsa publicly rejected a conditional final offer of 10% in 2014, 9,5% in 2015 and 9% in 2016. The Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa (SEIFSA) said the offer was made on condition that it would lead to a quick settlement that would see the current damaging industrial action, which has been accompanied by violence in some parts of the country, ended. In a statement to the media, SEIFSA Chief Executive Officer, Kaizer Nyatsumbawe,

said they had made it clear that they had exhausted their mandate. Nyatsumba said yesterday that SEIFSA had reverted to its previous offer of 10% in 2014 and 9% in 2015 and 2016 respectively, and that no follow-up meetings were scheduled with Numsa. “The current situation that we find ourselves in is very unfortunate and deeply regrettable. We are deeply concerned about the enormous damage wreaked on the economy by the strike, hence our determination last week to bring it to a speedy end. It is regrettable that our final offer intended to end the strike was not accepted, with the current industrial action continuing to damage our economy,” Nyatsumba said. Nodongwe said they were not backing down on their 12% wage increase demand.

R600 million boosts investor confidence in Bay REPORTER NELSON Mandela Bay Municipality received the thumbs up as an area that enjoys investor confidence with the launch of the R600 million FAW Coega Plant and a subsequent highlevel Chinese delegation visit to the Office of Executive Mayor Benson Fihla. President Jacob Zuma said the decision of the international automotive giant to build a plant at Coega IDZ is a vote of confidence in Nelson Mandela Bay and the Eastern Cape Province as a whole. “This augurs well for South Africa’s ability to gain access to the global vehicle ma-nufacturing industry. I hope that you will surpass your goal of building 5 000 trucks during your first phase. We are looking forward to a fruitful partnership with you,” President Zuma said.

FAW has been doing business in South Africa for the last 20 years and the new plant will start a different trajectory for one of the oldest and largest automotive manufacturing companies in China that had a staff complement of 130 000 employees in 2013. Qin Huanming, Vice President of FAW, said his company had provided South African customers with services since 1994 and the was committed company to producing environmentally friendly cars for local and international markets. “We are bound to start a better future together and create a long lasting friendship between South Africa and China,” he added. After the exciting launch guests had the opportunity to undertake a tour of the new facility and a high level Chinese delegation from Wuxi Municipal People’s Government undertook a visit to the Port Elizabeth City Hall to discuss closer ties with a local delegation led by Nelson Mandela

Bay Municipality Executive Mayor Benson Fihla and his deputy, Cllr Thando Ngcolomba. Both cities agreed that great prospects exist for the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and Wuxi to consider mutually beneficial working relations in the automotive industry, arts and culture, tourism and other fronts. Wang Liren, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of Wuxi Municipal People’s Congress, agreed with Deputy Executive Mayor Ngcolomba that both cities must identify officials to do the ground work to determine which areas of cooperation could be agreed upon.

Gelvandale SAPS launch Mountain Bike Patrol ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL IN AN effort to be more visible and enable more interaction with the community, members of the Gelvandale SAPS will henceforth be seen patrolling the area on state-of-the-art mountain bikes.

The six bicycles and helmets worth over R40 000 were donated to the station by Gelvandale SuperSpar and Coca-Cola. The Al Fidaa Foundation supplied a nutritious meal to approximately 500 community members at the official handover of the bicycles at the Helenvale Resource Centre last week. Gelvandale SAPS station commander Brigadier Laurence Soekoe was excited about launching the Mountain Bike Patrol and said that the bikes would be utilised to get closer to the community. “Our work is not just about apprehending suspects. It goes wider than that. We are here to support the community in talking to them, and to help solve their

problems,” Soekoe said. Gelvandale SuperSpar retailer Craig Herman said they had identified the need to assist the Gelvandale SAPS. “As a business within the northern areas we acknowledge the huge challenges the community we trade in is faced with. With the high unemployment rate within the Helenvale area we are obliged through our community service responsibility to attempt to make a difference,” explained Herman. “With our community partners the Gelvandale SAPS we identified the need to assist the police in their fight against crime. Brigadier Soekoe highlighted the need for mountain bikes to establish visible street police patrol and the police’s relationship within the community. We approached our business partners Coca-Cola who immediately embraced the idea of sponsoring the six mountain bikes. From this point on all else fell into place with the likes of Spar DC and Al Fidaa all of whom generously came on board.”

Electricity vending machines for all corners of the Metro Continued from page 1 Fihla said, “The challenge facing us is going to require many tough and unpopular decisions to be made. The ability to take these decisions while retaining broad support across all our communities and sectors will only be possible if the leadership and administration have the necessary confidence and trust of communities.

This is a task that can only be achieved by a leadership and community with the will to succeed. “Our role as local government, together with Amat, will be multi-faceted and key in ensuring that we meet the challenges, address disparities, unify our communities and assist in the NMBM service delivery and developmental mandate. “Given the Amat terms of reference, I

am convinced that their invaluable contribution will serve this metro, as expected, in an efficient, effective and sustainable way,” Mayor Fihla said. Amat said they would also try to infiltrate a syndicate which operates with corrupt municipal officials who have advanced technological equipment which can alter electricity meters in homes around the Metro.

“What people do not know is that some of these officials whom you let into your home are tampering with your cables and you end up paying higher tariffs. Some people in affluent areas have not paid their electricity bill for years now because the municipality cannot access their meter owing to tampering. Make no mistake, we will expose these criminals,” said Faku.

Metro builds centre of hope for local addicts NCEBA DLADLA ACCORDING to a survey conducted by the Central Drug Authority from June 2010 to March 2011, substance abuse in the country doubled that of the global average and the country is ranked in the top 10 of highest alcohol abusers. The Department of Social Development and Special Programmes has noted many social ills as a result of substance abuse that engulf the country like HIV/Aids, gender-based violence, child-headed homes, and the abuse of women

and children. According to Social Development and Special Programmes spokesperson Gcobani Maswana, the Eastern Cape (EC) and Nelson Mandela Bay have not been spared from these social ills and without a State Drug Treatment Centre, the province struggled to fight a winning battle against them, According to Maswana, the EC had been referring substance abusers to various treatment centres outside the province. But this will soon change as a State Drug Treatment Centre is currently being construct-

ed. The Department is renovating the former Arthur Nyobo Primary School in Singapi Street, New Brighton, Port Elizabeth to benefit Nelson Mandela Bay residents. “But the establishment of this centre will see many of our people receive treatment quickly and closer to home. This is exciting because there is hope for the Eastern Cape,” said Maswana, adding that through treatment, many people will turn over a new leaf and live better lives. This in turn, according to Maswana, would

impact on other communities. Maswana said, “The state facility would offer a residential programme to substance- abusing children of between 13 and 18 years of age from across the province.” Construction is underway and is expected to be completed in October. The building contractor, Masithembeke Construction, will then hand over the institution to Social Development and Special Programmes to do the official opening in January 2015. The announcement has been hailed by various stakeholders that include the Department of Health, South African Police Service (SAPS), Correctional Services, Non Governmental-Organisations (NGOs) and Victim Support Centres.

Book on music icon Brenda Fassie launched NCEBA DLADLA RENOWNED author, journalist and historian Bongani Madondo will launch his latest work, an anthology of anecdotes and essays titled “I’m Not Your Weekend Special”, the book about the late icon of South African Pop Music Brenda Fassie at the PE Opera House tonight Wednesday July 16. The book was edited by Bongani Madondo, a world famous journalist, writer and music historian who was in Nelson Mandela Bay as part of his Eastern Cape tour which started at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

Book launch: “I’m Not Your Weekend Special” Opera House tonight.”

Brenda Fassie, the well-loved and talented musician from KwaLanga in Cape Town, lived a life with no parallel in South Africa, according to Madondo. Asked for his inspiration, Madondo, who describes himself as a Joburg migrant worker from Hammanskraal in Pretoria, said if he did not do this work, he would not sleep well in his grave. “Brenda was a mirror of society. Her music reflected who we are – our sorrows and pains as well as our aspirations as a people,” said Madondo. He said Brenda was a one-woman-wonder who changed many perceptions and set the music scene alight leaving all who have known her in admiration and awe of this immeasurable gift. Madondo said journalists and writers, who have known Brenda Fassie and could not resist the power she had on them and the country, contributed to this anthology of anecdotes and essays. Madondo praised the role played by Vukile Pokwana in making the book a reality. Forming part of the panel of discussion at the launch tonight will be Vukile Pokwana, one of the contributing writers in the book, Dr Simphiwe Sesanti who has just started at the beginning of July at NMMU Media Studies Department moving from Stellenbosch University and Bongani Madondo. Copies will be sold at the PE at R241 each. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

Kaizer Chiefs match announced as Bay signs with Chippa NCEBA DLADLA TICKETS for Sunday’s clash between the mighty Kaizer Chiefs and the newly promoted Premier Soccer League (PSL) outfit Chippa United FC are still available at Computicket, Shoprite/Checkers and the Stadium at R40 for adults and R20 for children 12 years and younger. This announcement was made by Mayoral spokesperson Kupido Baron on the first match to be played by PSL outfit Chippa United, in its new home stadium, the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality officially announced on Monday that the Chillie Boys, as Chippa United is popularly known, will be making the iconic Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium its home ground for at least the next three years. The club was

based in Phillipi in Cape Town. Although the contract with the club is officially over a three year period as per the legal requirement, Club Chairman, Siviwe “Chippa” Mpengesi committed the club to the Eastern Cape Province for the next 20 years. “We are here to stay. If the municipality would like to change the name, we are open to suggestions. We are not here for selfish reasons or to disappoint because I never imagined that we would leave the small stadium in Philipi to play in a world-class facility like the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Even the Wolfson Stadium (the training facility of the team) is bigger than the stadium that we had,” said EC born and bred Mpengesi. “Comrade Nelson Mandela, after whom this beautiful stadium and our municipality are named, famously said that sport has the power to change the world. I am reminded of this as we are all here today to make the

important announcement of Chippa United relocating to Nelson Mandela Bay to make this amazing stadium their home ground,” said Executive Mayor Benson Fihla. According to Cllr Fihla, their agreement would not just give United the opportunity to compete and practise in top class facilities, but would also allow them the opportunity to become part of a growing and developing area. According to Oom Ben, as the mayor is fondly known, the economic benefits of their relocation to Nelson Mandela Bay cannot be ignored. The R15 million budgeted for over a threeyear period would not be enough as PSL teams cost about R36 million. According to Deputy Executive mayor Chippa Ngcolomba, the municipality would contact the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture to cover the additional cost of the re-

location deal. “With the Soccer World Cup that just ended in Brazil still fresh in our minds, we must inspire young boys and girls to dream about becoming football stars with a local team that performs well and represents the region at the highest level,” Mayor Fihla said. To kick-start the football festivities brought about by this acquisition of a PSL outfit, Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs will play Chippa United in a friendly match at the stadium on Sunday, 20 July, at 3pm. Their first Premier Soccer League match is against Platinum Stars on 12 August at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. “Welcome to Nelson Mandela Bay, Chippa United. We know that you are not here for an overnight stay and we hope that your stay is worth your while. We are happy that you chose to come here...” said Safa Nelson Mandela Bay President, Monde Mhletywa.

Meet the man behind bringing the man vs machine race back on track BETTIE GILIOMEE MICHAEL Zoetmulder, operational owner of Zports, has become synonomous with organising sporting events of world quality in Port Elizabeth and establishing the city as the Watersport Capital of the world. Few know that this sports organiser, born and bred in Port Elizabeth, not only represented South Africa as a lifesaver and was even named SA Surf Lifesaver of the Year , but is also a martial arts expert with black belts in Ju-Jitsu and Atemi-Jitsu. Zoetmulder, who grew up in the picturesque village of Redhouse on the banks of the Swartkops River, has spent his whole life in PE with the exception of a couple of months in Durban, one- and- a- half years in Australia and about 10 years in the United Kingdom. Growing up in Redhouse he was surrounded by sporting role models from the local swimming club, yacht club, sailing club and the Bluewater Bay lifesavers. “I have had a passion for sports ever since I can remember. We are a family of 6 children and we were always doing something. My brothers all excelled in lifesaving and I followed their lead,” said Zoetmulder. He started surf lifesaving at the age of 8 years as a Nipper with Bluewater Bay Surf Lifesaving Club, winning his first SA medal at the age of 9 years. “I was fortunate to represent EP in surf lifesaving for more than 12 years and during this time I also represented EP in still water lifesaving and canoeing. My lifesaving career peaked in 1990 when I was named SA Surf Lifesaver of the Year and won a trip to Australia, an experience I’ll never forget,” said Zoetmulder. He has won numerous SA medals in lifesaving, mostly for Surf Ski and Ironman events, and in 1992 after winning the SA Surf Ski title, he spent 6 months competing in Australia.

Whilst at University he enjoyed the martial arts and has a black belt in Ju-Jitsu and another in Atemi-Jitsu whilst also spending several years learning Aikido. Zoetmulder started organising sporting events in Port Elizabeth after returning with his family from the United Kingdom and seeing an opportunity in the Eastern Cape for professionally-run sporting events. “I jumped into the deep end starting the Ocean Racing Series, which now enters its 10th season,” he said. Since then Zports has introduced several new and exciting sporting concepts to the Eastern Cape such as the Urban Run charity event, the Bell Buoy Challenge, 3 Beaches Challenge, Run-in-Heels race and the Muck Run, as well as securing Port Elizabeth as the first city in Africa to host The Color Run – the largest 5k run on the planet. They are also responsible for the management of the SPAR River Mile, About IT Triathlon Summer Series and the Global Diabetes Walk. When asked why he had chosen Port Elizabeth, he said that having visited over 30 countries, he had yet to find a city which is more conducive to bringing up a family than the Friendly City. Zoetmulder, who is also a member of the Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth Sunrise where he serves as President, said he was particularly honoured to be named Port Elizabeth Citizen of the Year – Business Category in 2009 for the contribution that he had made to charity and the local community through Zports. He said he decided on the Train Race revival as the demise of the Great Train Race, which was the largest corporate team event in the Eastern Cape, has left a void over the past decade. “Together with Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism we’ve been looking at ways of bringing back this Man vs Machine concept for more than 4 years now. We were due to

launch the Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race on the 1st September last year but gave this spot to The Color Run and moved the inaugural race to this year,” said Zoetmulder. . Zoetmulder encourages local communities to come out on Sunday, July 27, in support of the Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race and line the streets to encourage the teams,

as well as the festival grounds at the finish at the Uitenhage station. Make sure you get a copy of next week’s PE Express or visit www.pe-express.co.za for more details on the route and race. PE Express and sister publications, UD News, PE Express Indaba and Die Burger are media sponsors of the Great Train Race.

Youth Journo is a programme presented by Media24’s Local Newspapers, of which OP Koerante forms part of, that gives high school students the opportunity to share their schools’ news with the rest of the community online. But it is not only restricted to school news – anything that is of importance to teenagers could be submitted under Youth Journo on our website, whether it be dating tips, book or CD reviews or more serious matters like drug abuse

among teenagers. To launch this exciting project, OP Koerante will be giving away a laptop to a school that submits the most Youth Journo entries online. To enter this competition, learners – or rather Youth Journos – would have to go to our website to tell us why their school is the best (only online entries will be accepted).

How to enter Go to www.pe-express.co.za. The Youth Journo (or his/her parent) must register as a user on the website and then click on “Tell Your Story”. (This could even be the perfect assignment

for an essay or great practice in the computer class!) The online form you need to fill in is as easy to use as Facebook. The Youth Journo must remember to fill in his/her name and surname, upload a photo of himself or herself and also mention the school’s name somewhere in the story. Stories should be at least 250 words. What the school does with the laptop, is totally up to them. So what are you waiting for school principal? Motivate your learners to upload their stories today. Young Professionals celebrate 40th anniversary HIGH profile people, founder members and current members of Young Professionals FC graced a glittering function to mark Young Professionals FC’s 40th anniversary at Bolo Punch in KwaZakhele on Sunday. Before the programme commenced the audience paid tribute to Professionals fallen hero Sinethemba Maphondwana Tom who died tragically a week ago. The motivational speaker Mandilakhe Nontenja stated that the power of vision kept the fire burning in Professionals. He stated that the players should have vision every time and they should not lose their focus. Nontenja said, “One should not be threatened by the lack of resources, but one must fan the fire to make the power of vision appeal to everyone. Young Professionals should be the

beacon of hope to eradicate crime and bring hope to the roaming lost individuals.” ZAFA President Sabelo commended Professionals and stated that players of yesteryear had a passion and pride in football. Nkuhlu said, “ the history of Young Professionals is very rich. They had great players who left a legacy in football. They demonstrated a fighting spirit in the field of play. Today you can see their current players also emulate what their heroes showed.” One of Professionals’ founders Mwelase Mboxela revealed that their aim of establishing the team was to bring the youth of Seyisi together. He said that it was not easy to run a football club many years ago because of financial constraints but the former players showed courage and a passion for sport. – SELBY MADIKANE

M’well Rollers introduce youth to skating fun SELBY MADIKANE MOTHERWELL Rollers Skating Club have embarked on a programme to introduce the youth to roller-skating at Motherwell Library during these school winter holidays. According to Motherwell Rollers Chairperson Marianne Terblanche, the aim of the programme is to keep the youth off the streets and to introduce them to roller skating. Terblanche stated that the programme

is for fun and was used to introduce the basics of roller skating. Terblanche said the young people showed great interest as they turned up in large numbers despite the chilly weather conditions. Skaters like Lindokuhle Zolela, Vusikhaya Stali and others also played an instrumental role in keeping the children entertained during the programme. Terblanche said, “I am over the moon to see the children taking part in our programme. This programme is not only for fun but to introduce the children to a wonderful sport.”

Mapitiza hailed for working without pay for boxing NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay boxing stakeholders have commended Mthunzi Mapitiza for showing enormous love for boxing by deciding to continue serving them even if it is without pay. This is after the national boxing governing body Boxing South Africa (BSA) last week wrote a letter to Mapitiza, its service provider, informing him to vacate the satellite office with immediate effect. It also told him to deliver all BSA material in his possession to the East London-based BSA Provincial Manager Phakamile Jacobs. The shocked Mapitiza respondend with a letter to BSA Board Chairperson Muditambi Ravele which he said he wrote “in part out of anger”. In the letter he stated that the PE satel-

lite office was formed by the then Minister of Sport (Ngconde) Balfour after being approached by members of the boxing fraternity. “Promoters had to foot the cost of travelling and accommodation for Mr Jacobs every time they had to stage a development tournament - thus making life difficult for them.” Mapitiza further mentioned that he had serviced the sport with the dignity it deserved since 1987 “using my house as an office and operating from the boot of my car.” He said, “My appeal to the board is not to close office, for the sake of boxing. If it is costly for BSA to run it, I can do it free as I used to (do in the past).” Ravele wrote back in response to the letter apologising for the correspondence sent to Mapitiza from the BSA office. “Just to clarify the issue, we do not have a problem with you

at all. Our challenge is to address issues that affect our good standing with the Auditor General and also to address our financial challenges. We do not want to kill boxing. “We appreciate what bhut’ Mthunzi is doing for local boxing. Last year we had seven boxing tournaments in this region. That has given us 10 boxers that are rated in SA. Half of those could be challenging for national titles. I wonder whether (Phakamile) Jacobs would service our peri-urban areas like Kirkwood and Port Alfred like Mapitiza did,” said boxing trainer Caiphus Ntate of Walmer. “I was saddened bythe news of our office closure. But Mr Mapitiza has once again shown his love for boxing. I think we in our (promoters) federation should support him,” said boxing promoter Sibongile Nkebe of Motherwell.

Mthunzi Mapitiza will service boxing free.
