T

HE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is working on a new policy and management model to maximise the potential of the neglected holiday resorts in the metro. According to Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) Executive Mayor Athol Trollip, over the years, all six holiday resorts in the metro have been neglected and left in a state of ruin by the companies to which they had been outsourced. “This has been allowed to go on unabated through a lack of leadership and foresight,” Trol-

lip said. “Currently, the NMBM is deriving limited revenue from the operation of these resorts, namely Willows, Van Stadens, Beachview, Maitlands and Springs as their potential has not been maximised for the benefit of the city,” Trollip added. He said that by nature, resorts were environmentally protected areas and as such, the new policy sought to ensure there was full compliance and that the necessary legislation was adhered to. “Once the policy has been completed, it will go for public participation before it is presented to the full council for adoption. It is hoped that

its adoption would take place once the Integrated Development Plan is adopted in May. “Its introduction would inform the successful management of these prized facilities through tailor-made and resort-specific management models,” Trollip said. He said the metro was positioning itself as a sports tourism city and a preferred tourist destination of choice. However, the current state of the resorts did not bode well for the city’s tourism blueprint as they were below acceptable world-class standards, he said. Trollip further added that passing this policy would pave the way for the appointment of a ser-

vice provider, who would carry out the necessary refurbishment work and restore the facilities to their former glory. “This coalition government is committed in ensuring that the city gets a return on its investment through a watertight management and revenue generation system. “The years of neglect and lack of development at these facilities has denied the city millions of rands in revenue collection,” the Mayor said. “We want to change this by turning these facilities into world-class tourism spots. This will ensure the full enjoyment of these resorts by the Metro residents, as well as the domestic and overseas visitors.”

Municipality launches intern programme REPORTER IN an effort to give unemployed graduates a chance to gain much-needed workplace skills and boost their chances of future employment, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has launched an intern programme in the mayor’s office. “After a gruelling selection process, four previously unemployed graduates are now staff members in the office of the executive mayor,” Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Athol Trollip said. Anelisa Mabece, Lutho Dzedze, Bajabulile Makhaye and Vuyo Ngqondela, all Bay residents, have been selected for a sixmonth internship programme recently launched in the mayor’s office. “With a range of qualifications from a Bachelor of Arts to a postgraduate LLB, and from a National Diploma in Municipal Management to an Honours in Corporate Communication, these four exceptional young South Africans have already achieved so much,” Trollip said. “Sadly, too many graduates are still unemployed, some of whom eventually give up hope and stop looking for work altogether. Recently, I met a young woman volunteering as a coach controller aboard the Apple Express. “She is a postgraduate botanist, confident, competent and very intelligent, yet, unable to find permanent work in her field of study. This illustrates the enormous

challenge of job scarcity; the metro is stepping up to assist.” The mayor said the metro is planning to launch an initiative which seeks to expose unemployed graduates to work opportunities that may have previously slipped by. “The Department of Labour has expressed an interest in supporting the planning and implementation of this initiative. “The involvement of various private and public sector entities, facilitated by the mayor’s office, will see local potential employers interfacing with the city’s unemployed graduates on a regular basis,” Trollip added. “I challenge, and will continue to challenge, every established business or firm in Nelson Mandela Bay to make provision for one or two six-month intern positions where only applicants who live in the Bay are eligible,” Trollip said, adding that gaining work experience through internships often unlocks opportunities for young graduates. Trollip said in the weeks to follow, they will be calling all unemployed graduates to a set of workshops or public meetings to begin capturing and discussing the spread of qualifications and skill. “Job creation is critical. “Millions and millions of South Africans are relying on the government to grow the economy and to create jobs. “While tough national economic conditions prevail, this coalition government is determined to reduce unemployment.”

NMBM condemns listeriosis in tap water claims REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) has issued a media statement saying its tap water is safe to drink after allegations in the social media that its tap water is one of the causes of the outbreak of the listeriosis disease in Nelson Mandela Bay.

OMBUDSMAN

“The municipality’s drinking water preparation and distribution comply with South African National Standards 241,” the statement read. The NMBM condemned individuals who

about 750 confirmed cases, is believed to be the largest ever outbreak of the bacterial disease listeriosis. As of January 17, it had been confirmed that nine people in the Nelson Mandela Bay had contracted the disease. Listeriosis is generally found in water, produce (fruits and vegetables), soil, milk and ready-to-eat products. Though Nelson Mandela Bay’s tap water has been declared safe, residents have been urged to continue to use precautionary measures to prevent infections. These methods include boiling water before drinking, not allowing ba-

bies to play in the sand and washing off all food. In particular, babies, pregnant women, elderly folks and people with compromised immune systems are at risk. The symptoms of listeriosis include nausea, diarrhoea and infections of the blood and brain. The Department of Health, working with the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, is leading the disease control programme. Any formal communication about the disease will be done by either the provincial or national Department of Health.

Education MEC visits Bay schools THANDI SETOKOE EASTERN Cape Education MEC Mandla Makupula visited Nelson Mandela Bay schools last week to meet education stakeholders in an attempt to address issues that affect education. The visit formed part of the provincial government’s Back to School campaign that seeks to commend the best performing schools, while assessing and assisting the schools in dire need of help. Some of the schools that the MEC visited included Grey High, Ithembelihle Comprehensive in New Brighton and Astra Primary School in Bethelsdorp. Speaking at Grey High, Makupula assured that the department is more than ready for the 2018 academic year. “The declaration of posts for schools, according to the law, is done by September 30 which we did in August. Some schools have already received the mandated textbooks and stationery, and distribution should be completed by the end of January,” Makupula said. The MEC commended Grey High for heeding to his call to assist poor performing schools. “We must foster these bridges of building our rainbow nation,” he said. “One thing I appreciate about Grey is that they have committed to the request I’ve made for them to establish partnerships with less fortunate schools.” ;MEC Mandla Makupula encourages the Ithembelihle learners to give this academic year their all. PHOTO: THANDI SETOKOE

He said there was a misconception that Model C schools didn’t have problems, which couldn’t be further from the truth. “Grey experiences problems like any other school,” Makupula said. The newly appointed Grey High rector, Christian Erasmus, said he was excited about the year ahead. “I know I have big shoes to fill,” Erasmus said. Responding to partnerships with other schools, he said it was important to adopt an approach where schools were all learning together. “It would be really foolish to think that a school like Grey knows everything. The trick is to learn from each other; in that way we can understand each other’s situations and circumstances and we can grow together. “Grey will end up a better school as well as the schools we are partnering with,” Erasmus added. Addressing pupils at Ithembelihle High, the MEC said late coming is a

huge problem facing schools in the township areas. He, however, applauded the learners for having improved their attendance this year, describing that last year out of over 800 learners, only around 100 learners were present at school when school started. “I really hope that this year you have set high standards for yourselves as your future lies in your own hands. There is only so much that the educators can do,” Makupula said. Ithembelihle has, for the past three years, been listed as one of the worst-performing schools in the district. The MEC said discussions were underway with education stakeholders and officials to find solutions to improve the province’s results. “There were significant improvements in the Eastern Cape matric results, despite the province being the country’s worst-performing province yet again,” Makupula said.

ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL TWENTY-FIVE community members from Ward 37 in the northern suburbs of Port Elizabeth have the chance to make a change in not only their own lives but also in the lives of others as they are becoming qualified caregivers. The group of unemployed women are receiving a free, accredited two-month course in home-based care which is facilitated by Nonceba Mdaka, a consultant to St Francis Hospice, and the office of Ward 37 Councillor Neville Higgins. The course, which comprises theory as well as practical training, will enable these students to find employment as qualified carers for terminally ill patients at their homes. The students will receive certificates when they complete their training at the end of next month. “We believe it is important to give the

youth and also older persons in the area the opportunities to learn skills that would assist them with finding employment. “This is just one of the ways in which we aim to empower our community members,” Higgins said. One of the students, Sylvie van Willen, said she was grateful for the opportunity to become a caregiver. “I have learnt so much about illnesses and how they can be prevented or how to better your health if you’ve already been diagnosed. We had a practical lesson at a house in our area and I could see that there is a need in our community,” Van Willen said. She added that she would love to do some voluntary work in the community when she finished her training, but would like to one day obtain a permanent job. “I am very grateful to Councillor Higgins and Quintin Baatjies of the Ward 37 office, as well as Sister Mdaka, who made this possible for us. We truly appreciate it.”

St Albans’ inmates partake in annual 67 blankets project

IN celebration of the late Madiba’s 100th birthday this year, the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day organisation, in collaboration with the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), have partnered to create a massive Mandela masterpiece. Last week the organisation enjoyed an afternoon of crocheting with the St Alban Correctional Services’ inmates. The founder of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, Carolyn Steyn, said it still took her by surprise that so many people wanted to get involved in the project. “Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that a ball of wool could snowball into a movement,” Steyn said. She said the idea was born four years ago on her husband’s birthday, just after the passing of Nelson Mandela, “I was boasting about my very little domestic abilities and a friend suggested that I make 67 blankets for Mandela Day and I agreed. Little did I know that my sister would arrive on Christmas day with balls of wool reminding me of my pledge.” Steyn described how the blankets that were made in the correctional service facilities around the country were going to help create the largest portrait blanket in the world of the face of Nelson Mandela on April, 24 at Zonderwater maximum centre. “Once completed, all the blankets will be stitched together. Every blanket, measuring 160cm x 160cm, is a pixel in that portrait of Madiba,” Steyn said.

Founder of 67 Blankets, Carolyn Steyn, said she is amazed at how the project has changed the lives of the inmates at St Albans Correctional Service.

Following the display, the blankets will then get taken apart and distributed to different communities and ambassadors around the country in need of extra warmth in the winter months. One of the St Albans’ inmates said he was very happy to be part of the project because he now had something to keep him busy. “Before this, I didn’t even know how to knit. Once I start knitting, I don’t want to stop. I am definitely going to use this skill to empower other people in my community.” DCS acting director of Sport Recreation and Arts and Culture Laetitia Redman said initially, they had hoped to

launch the project at St Albans last year, however, due to certain circumstances they had to launch it elsewhere. “One of our main objectives is to ensure that offenders are properly rehabilitated and this project has assisted us towards that. This is one of the flagship projects of DCS in partnership with 67 blankets and it is one of the programmes that has been well constructed, such that it steers offenders towards social reintegration while at the same time very therapeutic,” Redman said. She added that they had reached their target with the blankets, “So far we have knitted more than 2 500 blankets nationally.”

ADVERTORIAL: THE CO-OP MICA

Minimise your water consumption by recycling grey water BENJAMIN Franklin once said, “When the well is dry, we know the worth of water.” Well, South Africa is on the brink of finding out just what water is worth. We are currently experiencing one of the most devastating droughts in history and, as was recently confirmed, we also have the worst water restrictions ever. South Africa has reached the point where its residents have to start treating water consumption like a salary; in other words, we have to “budget”, especially since households have been urged to limit their daily water consumption to 60F per person. The Co-op Mica, one of the leading suppliers in the hardware and agricultural

industry, has provided the ideal way to ease off some of the pressure by recycling grey water. Grey water refers to the relatively clean water from showers, washing machines, sinks, etc. that goes to waste and recycling it has proven a very effective way of reducing your water consumption. Statistics have shown that people use 10F of water for every minute in the shower. There is no specific system for recycling grey water. It can be customised according to a customer’s needs. One of the simplest methods is harvesting rain water. All you need is a water tank and a pressure pump. A ‘Spaarwater’ lay-flat hose can also be used to divert

rainwater from downpipes into swimming pools. The size of the water tank would depend on the space you have available or the amount of rain you get. Collection tanks vary in size from 260F to 10 000F. A JoJo Slimline 750F tank is a good choice for small spaces. This can also be used as a backwash recovery tank to save pool water by allowing it to settle before pumping it back into the pool. A ‘micro-irrigation system’ can also be installed in the garden and recycled water can be used to irrigate it. You could even set the system up to supply grey water to toilets for flushing purposes. If the available space is too small to ac-

commodate a large water tank, you can use a smaller container or divert the water directly where you want it to go by using assorted pipes and fittings. Simply insert a filter to hold back the worst of the chemicals before pumping the water where you need it to go. There are several other methods that can be used to recycle your grey water. If you haven’t made an effort to limit your water consumption as much as possible, now is definitely the time to start. For more info or advice on your grey water recycling needs, visit the Co-op Mica, located in the Willow Road Shopping Centre on the corner of Circular Drive and Willow Road, or contact the sales team on 041 007 0580.

Bay performers’ talent showcased abroad THANDI SETOKOE PORT Elizabeth-based learners Layla Domingo (18) and Marcuss February (16) have been given a once in a lifetime opportunity to showcase their acting talent in Orlando Florida, USA at the 2018 Applause Rising Talent Showcase, due to take place in July. The pair were selected following their oneminute monologue auditions in front of South African talent scout and director of Just You Models Elsubie Verlinden at the Port Elizabeth Opera House last year. They then subsequently attended the International Arts Talent Showcase in Johannesburg. The weekend was spent honing in on their artist skills in preparation for the USA. Proud mother Edith Domingo said Layla had always had a love for acting since the age of 11. “She has a burning passion for acting and every moment she acts she is having the time of her life. I believe that there is nothing in this world that makes her happier than being on stage. I always have and always will support her dreams. Describing her daughter as a multitalented young lady with a sound academic record, Edith said Layla set about all her assignments with the necessary vigour and fervour

Marcuss February has also been selected to travel to Orlando, Florida for the 2018 Applause Rising Talent Showcase.

with a purpose to succeed. Sharing the same sentiments for their son, Maxwell and Lucretia February said, “This

is a blessing and a great achievement for Marcuss and our family. We support him with everything and we are extremely proud.

Layla, who is a former pupil at Westering High School, will be pursuing her studies at African Film and Drama Academy (AFDA) this year where she will be studying a BA Performing Arts degree. “At the moment I just want to focus on my studies and also join the Just You Models casting agency in Johannesburg to gain more experience in acting and to audition for anything that comes my way, but if an opportunity arises in the US, I will take it wholeheartedly, the ecstatic 18-year-old artist said. Responding to what he wishes to gain from the experience, Marcuss, whose acting career began in 2015 at the Helen O’ Grady Drama Academy, said, “I just want to learn more about the industry because that is where my future lies. I want to grasp this opportunity that has come my way with both hands. During their time abroad they will be exposed to scouting agents and casting directors from all over the USA and the world. They will also be attending various workshops in Florida and at the New York Film Academy which will assist them with gaining more knowledge and education in the film industry and in their crafts as actors. The event will also grant them the opportunity to audition in front of scouting agents for possible scholarship to the New York Film Academy.

WESSA to host its first clean-up of the year this weekend THE Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) Algoa Bay branch will be hosting their first Walk with a Purpose clean-up of the year on Saturday, in the Upper Valley Gorge from 9:30am to 10:30am.

Interested parties can join the group, spearheaded by Teresa Zacharie, to clean the area off Upper Valley Road, next to the new Momsen Building. According to WESSA, a lot of effort has al-

!

ready gone into making this area safe and accessible. There is plenty of parking available to the left of the Momsen Building for the participants.

Gloves and litter bags will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring hats, sunscreen and bottled water. For more info contact Tim Douglas-Jones on 082 775 8816. – REPORTER

Women launch NPO to fight social media scams REPORTER A GROUP of women who fell victim to scams on social media have come together to form Sky Women NPO, a non-profit corporation (NPC) that is aimed at offering unique service and support to fellow scam victims, both men and women, on online platforms. Sky Women acts as a one-stop helpline and information and support centre to scam victims not only in South Africa but also internationally. “Our focus is to educate the community and help scam victims to get back on their feet and to provide them with proper support through the help of a psychologist and an in-

vestigating team,” said Sky Louise Heyns, CEO and founder of Sky Women NPO. “The company’s aim is to take action against the 419 scams on social media platforms and, thus, protect its potential victims by creating public awareness through its 419 Scam Awareness campaigns.” Sky Women intends to work via social media and mainstream media, including radio stations, magazines, newspapers and national TV. Its core aim is to identify victims of fraud, intervene and protect them from further victimisation, inform local authorities and agencies in assisting scam victims, and influence local, regional and national authorities to foil scams. Sky Women will offer scam aware-

ness presentations at schools, talk shows and present a series of television programmes to inform the public about the danger of the scams and the supportive role that Sky Women NPO will play to assist victims in South Africa. “Since Sky Women is a non-profit company and has been formed in direct response to the increasing number of scam victims in South Africa, we encourage all institutions to participate in the fight against scamming. This will enable the company to establish a national information and support centre for scam victims in South Africa,” Heyns said. She was inspired to start the NPO after she fell victim to a social media scam herself. “Sky Women is more than just a

vehicle to helping others and decreasing the number of scam victims. It is my opportunity to take my bad experience and find a way to give my hurt true meaning. “Sky Women NPO is a voice for change and, as CEO, I will use it to protect innocent people,” she said. “Take a stand against scams and cyber fraud in South Africa! Be a scambassador! Sky Women NPO has no tolerance for scams and cyber fraud.” Though Sky Women will shortly be opening their offices in Cape Town, they offer their services to all scam victims worldwide. For more info contact them on support@skywomen.co.za or visit the Sky Women NPO Facebook page.

Two days left to view ‘Creative Block’ exhibition REPORTER THE inspirational Creative Block exhibition, which has been open at the GFI Art Gallery since December 9, will be closing this Friday.

Some of the artworks currently on display at GFI Art Gallery as part of the ‘Creative Block’ programme. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

The exhibit features a curated collection of 300 affordable original artworks by renowned and emerging South African artists which are displayed together as a “single work”. Creative Block is a long-standing artist career development programme managed by Spier Arts Trust and supported by three integral patrons, namely Spier, Nando’s and Hollard.

Over the past year, the GFI Gallery in Nelson Mandela Bay has collaborated with Spier Arts Trust to extend the reach of this artist career development programme to the Eastern Cape, creating an incredibly positive and empowering experience for artists in the region selected into the Creative Block programme. It has provided a long-standing opportunity for established and emerging artists. Professional artists selected for the programme receive small blank blocks that they transform into original artworks, using any medium. Many of the artists are self-

taught and develop further through the curator’s individual critique. When work is accepted by the curator, artists are immediately paid a set price per work. With monthly submission dates and reliable payment, the Creative Block programme creates the potential for artists to earn a steady income while enabling them to focus fulltime on their artistic career. The current exhibition, featuring work from artists from the Eastern Cape and beyond, ends its current run at GFI Gallery in Park Drive, St George’s Park on Friday. LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Thank you from Vistarus Thank you for publishing the article regarding Vistarus going green to curb energy costs in the PE Express of Wednesday, January 17. We really value the exposure. Please note that where the article read “Jacobs added that solar panels for the second phase can be sponsored at R2 500 per panel”, it should read “Jacobs added that sponsorship for phase one, is available at R2 500 per panel.” The local business community who wish to sponsor solar panels should note that we are in the first phase, not the second. Vistarus management also takes this opportunity to wish you and your family well in 2018.

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 24 JANUARY 2018

‘Fuel price relief expected in February’ – AA REPORTER SOUTH African motorists can look forward to a bit more relief on the first Wednesday in February, with fuel prices set to drop again. This is according to the Automobile Association (AA) which was commenting on mid-month fuel price data released by the Central Energy Fund. The association attributed the continued positive balance shown by the fund to the unusual but welcome stability of the rand against the US dollar since the last week of December. “The Rand/US dollar exchange rate

has had one of its flattest periods of trading in recent times,” the AA said. “It has traded in a very narrow band between R12.30 and R12.40 to the US currency since the last week of December, bringing some welcome stability.” The association also noted that the international prices of petrol and diesel were also stable over the same period, although there was a slight climb in both in the second week of January. “The current data predicts a decrease in petrol of nearly 41 cents a litre, with diesel down by 23 cents and illuminating paraffin dropping 26

cents,” the AA said. The price drop for fuel next month will come after a decrease this month, following five consecutive months of increases at the end of last year. “Continued stability in fuel prices for 2018 will largely depend on political and economic factors which affect South Africa’s attractiveness as an investment destination,” the Association concluded. ; South Africans are looking forward to another drop in the fuel price next month, following the numerous increases that occurred last year.

2017 vehicle sales end on positive note REPORTER THE new vehicle industry ended 2017 on a positive note, according to the annual sales data from the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa). Despite December 2017’s yearon-year sales declining 2.4%, the year-to-date new car sales for 2017 still grew 1.8%. In total, 557 586 new vehicles were sold in South Africa last year. “The new vehicle market’s positive performance for the last year was almost exactly in line with our forecast of 1.74% growth,” said Rudolf Mahoney,

head of brand and communications at WesBank. “This can be attributed to the Rand being resilient in the face of volatility and the South African economy performing better than anticipated. “However, the economy is still underperforming and faces a long road to recovery.” In the second half of 2017, OEMs were able to stave off price increases as the Rand firmed against foreign currencies. This allowed manufacturers to pass value back to consumers through very attractive marketing incentives when purchasing new vehicles. WesBank’s data for 2017 also reflected the continued shift back to

the new vehicle market, especially when measuring demand through the number of vehicle finance applications received. Demand for new vehicles rose 6.4% in December, while demand for used vehicles slowed 0.2%. Overall, demand for new vehicles grew 3% in 2017, while demand for used vehicles declined 1.5%. This positive performance for the last 12 months has set the stage for continued growth in 2018. WesBank will deliver its annual new vehicle industry sales forecast at the WesBank SAGMJ Car of the Year banquet in March.

Lion City continue with disappointing performance SELBY MADIKANE ONE of the formerly unrivalled sides in the ABC Motsepe League, Lion City, continued with their dismal run of form when they lost 2-0 to the newcomers, Sibanye FC, in front of their disappointed diehard home supporters during their game that took place at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Saturday.

Supporters of the newly formed Northern Areas side came out in numbers to see their side take on Lion City. Both sides displayed topnotch football to keep the fully packed stadium abuzz, but in the end, it was the visitors who had the upper hand. Lion City have had a torrid time since the start of the season. Sibanye FC’s supporters also deserve special mention for rallying behind their side through thick and thin. Masixole Freedom Funani and Luxolo Bibo Tobi could have scored a number of goals, but some of their shots went wide and others were

Seven Sundowns Sports Club dedicated to youth development SELBY MADIKANE MTHUNZI Mrwebi has taken it upon himself to promote youth sport development in the Motherwell NU 7 Township with the aim of fighting crime. Mrwebi, who was a star player of Tomorrow Stars FC, which is based in Motherwell NU 9 Township, joined hands with members of the community to form a multicoded sports structure. Today, their Seven Sundowns Sports Club boasts six football teams, four netball teams, a basketball team, a chess team and a swimming team. Mrwebi, together with Thamsanqa

Khame, are the soccer coaches. Mrwebi said, “I am happy that the youth are passionate about sport. “We need more players, especially the players from the ages eight to 18 years, in all sports codes that we have. “We want our area of Motherwell NU 7 to be a crime-free area. This can be possible if all the members of the community can join hands with us. We appeal especially to parents to come on board. “Our u/13 soccer team defeated Highland Spurs 6-1, while our u/15 team went down to Highland Spurs on Sunday. “We are not mainly concerned with quick results, but our aim is to keep the youth off the streets.” < Pictured here is Former Tomorrow Stars FC player and head coach Mthunzi Mrwebi with the Seven Sundowns Sports Club u/13 soccer team. saved by Sibanye FC’s experienced goalkeeper, Xolani Myataza. Sibanye FC striker Darryn Bamboo’s header was easily collected by City’s goalkeeper, Phumlani Koboka, late in the first half. So, the teams went to the half-time sharing a goalless draw. In the second half, Sibanye FC’s players looked fired up as they kept the home side in their own territory. Curtley Vernon came up with Sibanye FC’s opening goal. City were then under immense pressure as their midfielders could not play as a collective unit. Sibanye FC rubbed salt into City’s wounds following a top-notch header by Bamboo that guided the team to a well-deserved 2-0 win.
