T

HE Nelson Mandela Bay Metro’s bus rapid transit system is expected to come into operation by the end of June, but before that happens, the empowerment and training of taxi drivers must happen first.

According to the business plan, 144 taxi drivers - who would possibly drive the buses that are part of the municipality’s integrated public transport service (IPTS) – started receiving training from yesterday (Tuesday, April 11).

Rano Kayser, Mayoral Committee Member for Roads and Transport, said the taxi drivers are members of taxi associations who have signed a memorandum of agreement with the municipality.

According to him, the training and drivers’ license upgrade of the taxi drivers should be completed by the end of May. “The trial run of the route of Cleary Park to the Port Elizabeth city centre and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) will also take place at the end of May. “The IPTS is expected to start with the first route by the end of June. As far as the municipality is concerned, we are ready to implement the bus service taking into account the processes that need to be followed.”

“The committee has established three subcommittees. They are the empowering and training and operations, service and compensation committees.

“As part of the outcome of the negotiations the need for the empowerment and training of taxi operators was identified and that’s why the training was started,” Kayser said.

He said the operators who are directly affected by the implementation of the IPTS, are also the people who are to benefit from it.

“That’s why we do not outsource the services for drivers. The training will take the in-

dustry to the next level by professionalising it.

“The 144 drivers have the option to upgrade their code 08 driver’s license to a code 10 or a code 14. It also depends on the associations who send them for training. It could be taxi drivers and/or taxi door operators. The training will be completed in phases,” said Kayser.

He added that construction work at the Cleary Park Shopping Centre had started for parking areas for the buses.

“We have appointed one of the service providers on the municipality’s database, SP Exel Holdings, for the work and it should be completed by the end of May. As part of the project a few taxi door operators have been employed.”

Police issue warning: Do not stop for strangers REPORTER MOTORISTS should not under any circumstances stop for strangers who try to flag them down.

This was the stern warning sent out by Port Elizabeth police last week. The warning follows recent reports of vehicle hijackings with a similar modus operandi.

According to police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, two people were hijacked in separate incidents in the Humewood and Algoa Park areas.

In the first incident, on April 4, 2017, the complainant, who drives a jikeleza taxi, was flagged down by a woman near Kenako Mall.

“The woman informed the driver that her brothers were waiting further down the road. As soon as the driver stopped, two men got into the vehicle and threatened him at gunpoint. The driver was taken to Perseverance where he was robbed of his cash and his Mazda 323 vehicle,” Naidu said.

In a similar incident, during the early hours of April 5, a 24-year-old man was hi-

jacked in Strand Street in Humewood after stopping for a woman who allegedly flagged him down.

“As he stopped, two unknown men got into the vehicle and forced him to drive to a block of flats where a third person got in and a TV was also loaded in the vehicle. The complainant drove to the taxi rank and was ordered to get out and run. The vehicle, a VW Golf, was recovered in the taxi rank minus the radio and speakers.”

Naidu added that drivers should use their discretion and always be alert when driving.

“Strange behaviour by pedestrians (in these cases women) must be viewed with suspicion. Always look around when stopping at traffic lights, especially late at night or in the early hours of the mornings. Make sure that the doors are locked at all times.

If surprised by the sudden appearance of someone at the window do not open the window, instead drive off. Hijackers are professionals and they plan their attacks carefully, so motorists are advised to be vigilant at all times and not to be naïve when confronted by the opposite sex.”

National blood stock desperately low

Projects worth R1 billion ready for implementation

THE busy Easter weekend is around the corner and the country’s blood stock is currently desperately low.

REPORTER THE Coega Development Corporation (CDC) announced on April 5 that investment projects worth over R1 billion are ready for implementation in the Coega IDZ from April 2017.

This announcement follows the unaudited results of what has been another successful financial year for the organisation in which the CDC proved its fortitude as a leader in investment attraction by securing a total of 16 investors with a combined investment value of R11.7 billion.

“The metals and manufacturing industrial sector of the Coega IDZ will soon roll out three investment projects, where the first project’s site handover is planned for April 2017,” said Sadick Davids, CDC Business Development Manager, Metal and Manufacturing.

The following are the three investment projects currently in the process of implementation: . A R650 million manufacturing cement grinding plant . A R71 million ready mix concrete plant . A R350 million gas cylinder plant.

“Some of the aforementioned investment projects are owned by previously disadvantaged people, particularly women. Therefore, the CDC is proud to be among government institutions who continue to support programmes that contribute towards the industrialisation and economic transformation of

Dr Ayanda Vilakazi, CDC unit head for marketing and communications, said that the implementation of these investment projects is evidence of the CDC’s commitment to advancing the socioeconomic development of the EC province.

The CDC has, through all its investment projects in the IDZ and Infrastructure Development Programmes, created a total of more than 83 405 jobs in the past eight years.

However, it is projected that the organisation will for the first time in 16 years exceed 100 000 jobs created by the end of the 2016/17 financial year.

“So many people in life-threatening situations require blood. It’s what saves a haemorrhaging mother’s life, that she can raise and love the baby she has just brought into the world. It’s what saves someone suffering complications during major surgery. It’s what helps a cancer patient endure and survive treatment.

“And that’s the point: it’s not just blood. It’s saving people’s lives, through a simple, easy donation.”

The SANBS is, therefore, making an earnest appeal for South Africans to step forward and make a donation of blood. Today.

Chamber launched for NMB Cooperatives REPORTER NELSON Mandela Bay Cooperatives received a boost with the official launch of the Nelson Mandela Bay Cooperative Chamber (NMBCC), an apex body tasked with the responsibility to ensure the sustainability and success of its members last Wednesday.

With a current membership of 64 cooperatives operating in the tourism industry, manufacturing, construction, catering, agriculture, transport, ocean economy, waste management and recycling sectors the ideal membership goal set for the NMBCC are at least 200 cooperatives.

Both the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor, Athol Trollip, and the MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Sakhumzi Somyo, applauded the initiative.

“Let me thank all the stakeholders

whose participation led to this launch, in particular MEC Somyo who encouraged Metro Cooperatives to become organised and to speak in one voice leading to the cooperatives now belonging to an apex organisation that will provide them with support and development,” Mayor Trollip said at the launch at the Nangoza Jebe Hall.

“I think it is very good advice as cooperatives consist of individuals and not fully-fledged companies. They are groups of individuals coming together and the directive to organise yourself is indeed sound advice.

“I am furthermore pleased to note the good working relations between all the stakeholders and the desire by all partners to establish the tertiary cooperative, the NMBCC, and to convert opportunities into sustainable growth in order for cooperatives to operate in a conducive environment.

“This initiative will place the city among the forerunners in the imple-

mentation of the national policy on cooperatives in pursuit of meaningful participation to attain local economic development imperatives,” Mayor Trollip added.

MEC Sakhumzi Somyo said the advantage of an apex body for cooperatives is that they bring a number of people together that makes assistance for them from either government or the private sector easier.

“We would like you to operate in a sustainable manner so that we can assist you as an inclusive unit.

“Primary cooperatives can now be happy that they have a mother body that will at least make sure that they adhere to basic business principles and to enhance their professionalism and take them a step closer to attaining success,” said MEC Somyo.

THE Easter holiday, set to take place from April 14 to 17, is traditionally a period when there is a rapid spike in traffic on most major national and provincial highways.

The 550km stretch between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth is expected to be in a fair to good condition. Routine maintenance is expected to occur along sections of the N2.

The Baywest Boulevard which was recently opened should facilitate traffic flow on the section between Van Staden’s River and Port Elizabeth.

Construction traffic will be encountered in the Grahamstown area with

the possibility of blasting activities taking place near the Fish River Pass.

Motorists travelling the Garden Route are advised to be alert for pedestrians and stray animals within the informal settlements in Knysna along the George to Nature’s Valley route.

Undulations occur along the Gamtoos River to Van Staden’s River section. Caution is advised as pedestrians will be encountered at Thornhill. Temporary closures due to blasting along the Grahamstown to Fish River route will result in speed restrictions in the area. Stop-go controls can be expected.

WHILE other children might be lazing around during the school holidays, children in the Bethelsdorp area are using their free time to clean areas which would become parks for them to play in.

An initiative by the DA Youth in Ward 37, which includes Extension 28, 31-36 and Kleinskool, to engage children in a holiday clean-up campaign ensures that not only are the children kept occupied, but the area is also left spotless.

Ward 37 Councillor Neville Higgins explained that this campaign formed part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s War on Waste campaign, but also serves to keep the children off the streets in an area where gangsterism is rife.

“We are focusing on several different areas in the ward, and we have primary and middle high school learners involved in the programme. The children take part in this with pride and of course they enjoy the lunch and juice provided for them,” Higgins said.

He added that the areas cleaned by the children would be utilised to build a total of seven recreational parks within the next financial year.

“The kids are cleaning up areas that would eventually become parks for them, so this clean-up campaign is for their own benefit.

This is a very exciting prospect for them.”

Higgins added that the ward has exciting Youth Month programmes planned for the children in June.

Local wins regional final of scriptwriting competition REPORTER THE Performing Arts Network of Southern Africa (PANSA) recently declared local writer, Robert Lourens, the winner of the regional final of the Festival of Reading of New Writing for his play The Road.

The Festival of Reading of New Writing is a scriptwriting competition for new, emerging and experienced writers.

The finals were held on April 1 and an enthusiastic crowd watched staged readings of the three regional finalists.

Lourens won the first prize of R20 000. The reading was directed by Stageworld graduate Anneke Groenewald and featured Mark Fletcher, Aarti Narotam, Justin Oliphant and Vanessa Smith as the four diverse characters illegally travelling together to the National

Alcoholics Anonymous Convention in 1987.

Lourensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; interest in theatre began in 1973 and he has tackled many different roles over the years, including stage manager, director, lighting designer, producer and sound engineer.

He co-wrote and produced several shows with his wife, Marianah.

He attended a writing workshop with Roy Sargeant and his short play, Shadows in the Rainbow, was produced under the direction of Marlene Pieterse.

PANSAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Eastern Cape Chairman, Lance Bright, praised the quality of the works submitted and wished the winning team well in the national finals which will take place on May 6 and 7 in Cape Town.

The competition was made possible by a grant of R1.8 million from the National Lotteries Commission (NLC).

Ebhayi keeping kids busy during holidays ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL WHAT would have been another school holiday where these children are walking the streets exposed to all the elements, is now funfilled days with many activities to keep them occupied with the bonus of something to fill empty tummies.

Ebhayi We Care is a non-profit organisation (NPO) who took it upon themselves to create a holiday programme for the children of the Schauderville, Korsten, Kensington and Holland Park areas.

This programme offers the children activities such as beading and learning to build their own kites.

Werner Hollander, chairperson, said the NPO has six board members and they founded the organisation in January this year.

Apart from the holiday programme, the organisation also aims to empower the unemployed youth in the community.

“Our mission is to get the school drop-outs off the street. We want them to become skilled and to engage with training providers so that they are better equipped when looking for employment,” explained Hollander.

He further said that Ebhayi We Care aims to provide vocational training, a short skills programme, entrepreneurship, arts and crafts and a recycling programme.

“Every day we see the youth sitting around with no jobs and no future. We can’t sit back and expect government to do everything for us. We also need to do our part – with the assistance of government. That is why we want to enhance these young people’s chances of finding work.”

Board member Dudley Jacobs, who also runs a soup kitchen at Jarman Hall, said there are no proper parks or play areas in these neighbourhoods. “We want to teach them that their circumstances should not hold them back. They need to believe that they can also become doctors someday. It is our duty to teach them that they have a future,” Jacobs said.

Van onnie tot heeltydse politikus ROSLYN BAATJIES LODEWYK Gallant (55), wat 33 jaar ’n onderwyser in Port Elizabeth was, het die onderwys verlaat om hom op sy politieke loopbaan toe te spits.

Nadat Gallant sy studie aan die Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland voltooi het, het hy sy loopbaan in 1984 aan die Bethelsdorp Sekondêre Skool begin en hom in 1990 by die Bertram Sekondêre Skool aangesluit.

Dié voormalige adjunkhoof sê hy het ’n aangebore behoefte om mense te ontwikkel.

“Ek het ook ’n groot liefde vir kinders en ons gemeenskap. Om te sien hoe kinders wat ek onderrig het suksesvol in die lewe is, is een van my hoogtepunte as onderwyser.

“Dit het alles die moeite werd gemaak wanneer kinders terugkom om dankie te sê

vir die bydrae wat ek tot hul lewe gemaak het,” sê die voormalige Afrikaansonderwyser.

Hy meen die laagtepunte is wanneer leerlinge uitval.

“Daar is ook die onderwysdepartement se gebrek aan ondersteuning. Onderwysers is basies aan hul eie genade oorgelaat. Dis tragies.”

Gallant, ’n raadslid in die Nelson Mandelabaai-metroraad, sê hy het uit die onderwys getree omdat hy meer aandag aan sy politieke rol en verantwoordelikhede wil gee.

“Ek was maar al die jare polities betrokke, selfs as onderwyser deur my betrokkenheid by die Suid-Afrikaanse Demokratiese Onderwysersunie (Sadou) en later in die ANC. Die agteruitgang in ons land laat my met geen keuse nie.

“Natuurlik sien ek die onderwys as die een manier om mense se lewensomstan-

dighede te verbeter, maar die politiek gee my die geleentheid om mense se lewensomstandighede meer direk te probeer verander deur goeie dienslewering te bewerkstellig en beleid te beïnvloed,” voeg hy by.

Gallant, wat hom as onderleier van die DA in die provinsie beskikbaar gestel het, wil die party help om die regerende party in die Oos-Kaap te word.

“Om dit egter reg te kry is daar sekere drastiese veranderinge wat in die party se leierskorps moet geskied.

“Die huidige leiers sal moet plek maak vir ’n nuwe generasie van leiers met ’n nuwe uitkyk op die politiek in ons land. Local teen is determined to make a difference REPORTER A LOCAL teenager, undecided about her future, decided to take a gap year after graduating high school in 2016 and is using the time to give back to the less fortunate.

Amy Erasmus (18) is determined to do away with the general opinion that has formed about the gap year.

“Many people perceive a gap year to be a year of nothingness, but I have been determined to prove everybody wrong. I work part-time for NitroPark, the family entertainment centre in Baywest, and handle social media pages for various companies,” she said.

She is involved in several charity projects, including the Horse Rescue Unit and a clothing drive called Keep Caring.

“When I decided to take a gap year, I knew that in this year I would want to do more charity work and help the community,” Erasmus said.

She said her eye-opener came a few years ago at an event where the leftover food was donated to a soup kitchen.

“I went with to help and serve the food and it was quite heartbreaking to see that even though it wasn’t much to us, it was everything to them.”

Her main focus right now is on the Keep Caring Clothing Drive since winter is just around the corner.

“I know there are people who can’t afford clothes, blankets and food which is why I chose to do a clothing drive. We all have something in our cupboards which we might not need or feel that someone else could benefit from.”

Another reason she started the clothing drive is because it provides a long-term solution.

Clothing and blankets will last longer than food or money.

Erasmus said that the drive is only possible because of the support she has received from friends and family in sharing her social media posts and telling people about her cause.

“In the first five days (from April 1 to April 5), I managed to collect 180 articles of clothing, five blankets and seven food parcels,” she said.

She also attributes much of her success to Houdini who provided four drop-off points.

In addition to clothing and blankets, she also welcomes cash donations as the money will be used to buy food and bedding for those who cannot afford it.

The Keep Caring Clothing Drive will run until May 31.

All donations can be dropped at Houdini outlets in Central, Walmer, Newton Park or Sherwood.

Teens caged to raise funds for animals REPORTER TWO Grade 11 learners from Pearson High School, Jenna Parry and Carmen Doyle, recently raised more than R7 000 for the Animal AntiCruelty League (AACL) as part of an animal awareness event called Until Every Cage is Empty, Until All Cruelty Ends.

The organisations’ followers were asked to sponsor them for every hour the volunteers spent in the cages, which were erected at the Kemsley Park Sport Grounds.

The event was organised by animal worker, Megan Kelly, who joined the volunteers for the full 12 hours in a cage as well.

Some of the organisations that participated in the event were the AACL, Cat Care, Domestic Animal Abuse and PEAR. Parry recently started up the ECOS-PAWS group at Pearson High School and this was their first fundraising awareness programme.

She and Doyle raised R7 040 during their 12hour shift. The Animal Anti-Cruelty League was the recipient of R11 788 in total.

Chapman High School alumni to host first ever reunion REPORTER SPIRITS are running high at Chapman High School in Gelvandale as their newly established official alumni prepare to host their first reunion dinner on April 29.

According to the Chapman Past Pupils and Teachers Association (CHAPPTA) chairman, Deon Smith, who matriculated in 1987, the reunion dinner is an effort to call upon former students to plough back into the school.

Smith said that despite the many challenges the residents of Gelvandale are facing, Chap-

man High School has delivered professionals of great calibre over the years.

“We are proud of our roots and it is time we ensure that future generations of Chapman aspire to transcend beyond their circumstances and create success for themselves,” he added.

On a recent visit to the school, the alumni realised that the needs were immense and that its income was not sufficient to sustain extra curricula and maintenance projects.

Some of the immediate needs include the completion of the school hall project, which in turn could become a source of income for the school.

“We encourage all former students and teachers to see how they can contribute towards the success of the school and less fortunate learners,” Smith said.

He is of the opinion that it is the responsibility of former students to ensure that the dignity and pride of the school is maintained.

“We are constantly reminded by our school motto, ‘Goodness before Greatness,’ that it is our duty to give back and to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than us,” he said.

While CHAPPTA aims to become a meaningful stakeholder of the school, there is a drive to

raise funds to fulfil this purpose.

A dedicated bank account was opened and former students are encouraged to contribute a monthly donation of at least R50 towards the fund.

“The reunion is, therefore, twofold: it is an opportunity for us to meet up with old friends and raise funds at the same time,” said Smith.

The gala dinner will take place in the form of a black-tie event at the Northern Areas Football Association Hall at the Gelvandale Grounds on April 29 at 7pm.

The project requires learners from schools in Port Elizabeth to work or perform a service at a business or organisation in exchange for a donation to the scholarship fund. The work/service can take any form and the donation is flexible.

All donations received during the course of the project will be used to create at least one bursary which will then be awarded to a matric learner who has shown merit in their academic work and character.

“As the council represents the youth of Port Elizabeth, we are concerned about the education possibilities for our peers. We want to make

a positive contribution and a statement that we can make a difference if we work together,” said Abby Sieberhagen, a member of the JCC of PE and Rent A Student Project Manager.

They have issued a city-wide challenge to schools to get involved in the project. A number of schools have already committed to provide fifty hours. Only the matric learners of participating schools are eligible to apply for the bursary in July.

“There will be individual prizes sponsored by The Willows Resort and The Cape St Francis Resort up for grabs during the course of the project, as well as prizes for the top performing schools, based on hours completed.

“This project will show that the youth of Port Elizabeth can work together and each do their part to make a positive contribution to society,” Sieberhagen said.

The Rent A Student project will run from April 27 to May 1.

February, Hulett, Elkington, Noguera take titles at NMB Surf Pro REPORTER THE inaugural Nelson Mandela Bay Surf Pro presented by Billabong wrapped up three days of high-performance surfing action on Sunday with Michael February (Kommetjie) and Crystal Hulett (St Francis Bay) taking out the Men’s and Women’s titles respectively.

Jake Elkington (Kommetjie) and Kayla Nogueira (Durban) clinched the Junior Men’s and Women’s crowns.

The first internationally rated World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) events to be staged in Port Elizabeth enjoyed contestable, but testing, surf and great weather for the three days and featured 128 competitors, including South Africa’s top exponents and entrants from the USA and Australia.

February demonstrated why he is the country’s highest ranked QS surfer by dominating throughout the QS1 000 rated Men’s event, including the final.

Fellow QS campaigner Dylan Lightfoot (Jeffreys Bay) kept pace for the first half of the 25 minute final, but an excellent 8.67 by February late in the heat left Lightfoot, third placed Jarred Veldhuis (Kommetjie) and fourth placed Beyrick de Vries (the 2016 WSL Africa champion), all requiring 16.01 points for victory.

“Super happy with that result. I haven’t won an event for a couple of years and that’s my first QS1 000 event title,” said February.

“The final was tricky. The waves were really far out and you couldn’t hear what the situation was, but after I’d had two decent rides, I stayed close to Dylan (Lightfoot) and Jarred (Veldhuis) and used my priority to keep them off the good ones.

February pocketed R10 000 and 1 000 coveted rankings points which will see him vault from 91st into the top 40 on the QS leaderboard and he takes the early lead in the race for the WSL Africa title which means he will wear the Skullcandy zebra striped ranking leader’s vest at the next event on the City Surf Series in East London this weekend.

Hulett scraped into the women’s final after losing half of one of her scores when she incurred an interference penalty in her semifinal match-up. She went on to post the highest score of the encounter, a 7.67 out of 10, before adding a mid-range 4.27 to clinch her first WSL QS event title.

The Junior Men’s final was dominated by the Elkington brothers from Kommetjie, with younger brother Max leading until the last minute when older sibling Jake rode the highest scoring wave of the 25 minute clash to grab the victory.

Nogueira has been on roll for the past three weeks with the 13-year-old Durbanite surfing to victories winning both the U/14 and U/16 titles on successive weekends before capturing the 18-and-under title on Sunday.

NMMU is set to present ‘Opera Lights’ concert REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s (NMMU) Department of Music will present an evening of opera highlights from Mozart operas, such as The Marriage of Figaro, Cosi Fan Tutte and The Magic Flute, featuring the NMMU Wind Symphony, the NMMU Brass Ensemble and students from the Opera Studio of Njabulo Mthimkhulu.

The concert, called Opera Lights, will be opened by the NMMU Brass Ensemble, conducted by Professor Erik Albertyn, and will perform music by Rimsky Korsakov, JS Bach and Gustav Mahler.

Opera students from the studio of Njabulo Mthimkhulu will take to the stage in performing some of the most memorable arias composed by Mozart.

Mthimkhulu, who studied at UCT Opera School, has worked extensively across Europe and the USA. He obtained a Master’s degree in Music from the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

Among the soloists who will be performing are Olusiwe Zazini, Lindokuhle Gushu, Luxolo Jule, Karika Le Roux and Msimelelo Mbali. Another soloist, Nosiviwe Mqwebedu, is active in opera circles across the metro.

The arias will be accompanied by the NMMU Wind Symphony under the baton of Gareth Williams.

This concert will take place tonight, April 12, at 7:30pm in the NMMU South Campus Auditorium.

Local poet to perform at PE Opera House REPORTER SOUTH African English poet Thobeka Sinxo will be performing this month at the PE Opera House Poetry Tuesdays.

‘Ain’t Nothing but the Blues’ back in Bay REPORTER THE Rob Thompson Band is set to present yet another exciting instalment of their popular Ain’t Nothing but the Blues night tomorrow, April 13, at The Music Kitchen.

Ain’t Nothing but the Blues is a monthly evening dedicated to

blues music that showcases the multidimensional offerings of the Port Elizabeth music scene.

The band consists of Rob Thompson, Kristo Zondagh on drums, Tim Sedso on the bass guitar and Boet Strydom on keys. They will be the core house band for the showcase.

Various guest musicians will

add variety to the show, each bringing their special class of talent and unique sound to create a multifaceted listening experience.

The show will take place at The Music Kitchen in Mangold Street, Newton Park, at 8pm.

The PE Opera House space is fast becoming the number one poetry hub and is set to welcome Sinxo, a stage poet born and bred in the Nelson Mandela Bay. She has written short stories and plays and has published a children’s story called Ezintakeni with the Nal’ibali newspaper.

She first performed as a teenager for LoveLife and started pursuing a professional career in poetry in 2012 when she was invited to the Port Elizabeth Praat Festival that featured the likes of commercial poets Lebo Mashile and Lesego Rampolokeng.

Sinxo has also been to the Grahamstown National Arts Festival, as well as the Jozi Book Fair.

“When we want entertainment, we go to the Cape Town Jazz Festival or to the Grahamstown National Arts Festival. We must ask ourselves, are we a city capable of having our own?” said PE Opera House General Manager Monde Ngonyama.

Hyundai’s Grand i10 gets fresh new look REPORTER HYUNDAI’s Grand i10 – a small hatchback that has great appeal among young first car buyers, car rental companies and families looking for a second vehicle as a run-around – has received a fresh new appearance with the addition of a few new body panels and new wheels.

First launched in South Africa in 2014, the Grand i10 has been a solid seller in the passenger car line-up of Hyundai Automotive SA, presenting a perfect fit - in terms of size as well as price - between the entry-level i10 and the bigger hatchback, the i20.

“With the restyling of soft body panels and the addition of new alloy wheels for the flagship derivative, this cheeky little hatchback has been given an even better appearance,” says Stanley Anderson, sales and operations director of Hyundai Automotive South Africa.

The new Grand i10 is still available in three derivatives in South Africa, with slight changes in the specification levels.

They are the Grand i10 1.25 Motion with a 5-speed manual gearbox; the Grand i10 1.25 Motion with a four-speed automatic gearbox; and the Grand i10 1.25 Fluid with a 5-speed manual gearbox and a higher level of standard features.

The body shell of the Grand i10 yields one of the roomiest occupant cabins in its market segment, as well as an impressive 256 litres of trunk capacity. Up to 1 202 litres becomes available when the rear seats are folded.

High levels of craftsmanship can be found in the spacious interior, together with levels of comfort and safety equipment commonly only found in higher market segments.

Design and styling The Grand i10, which was originally designed at Hyundai Motor Europe’s Technical Centre in Rüsselsheim, Germany, never fell short in the exterior styling department.

Soon after its launch, the coveted Red Dot Award for design was bestowed on the Grand i10, recognizing its outstanding aesthetic form, innovation and ground-breaking ideas.

In its refreshed guise, the new Grand i10 features a redesigned front fascia incorporating Hyundai’s signature hexagonal front “cascading” grille with a honeycomb mesh, while the fog lamp enclosures in the redesigned front bumper have been thoroughly updated for an increased sporty appearance.

At the rear an integrated thin roof spoiler with a stop lamp and rear combination lights combine with a redesigned rear bumper to form an attractive picture.

A new set of 14-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels (on the Grand i10 1.25 Fluid manual) adds character to the compact hatchback. Colour-coded door handles and side-mirrors, with turn indicators built into them, combine with the well sculpted door panels to create an attractive car.

At 3 765 mm, the Grand i10 is one of the longest cars in the segment. Likewise, the Grand i10 is also the widest in its segment at 1 660 mm.

The low roofline of 1 520 mm creates an athletic on-the-road stance, complemented by the sleek proportions of the body shell which is highlighted by the sharp belt line.

The Grand i10 has a drag coefficient (Cd) of just 0,35, which is aided by windscreen sealing that does not protrude into the airstream. The aerodynamic shape reduces wind noise as well as fuel consumption, contributing to very low noise levels.

Extensive list of standard features Interior styling of the Grand i10 is still fresh and modern, offering standard grey cloth seats with grey inserts and a wide range of standard convenience features.

They include a manual air conditioner, a sound system with a radio, USB and AUX inlet plugs, and a CD and MP3 player. Integrated Bluetooth is also a standard feature in all three derivatives.

The Grand i10 1.25 Fluid manual offers an additional remote central-locking key and remote keyless entry, electrically adjusted side mirrors, electrically operated front and rear windows, and a rear park assist system as standard equipment to confirm its status as the flagship derivative.

Spirited Kappa engine delivers excellent fuel economy The Grand i10’s 1,25-litre engine belongs to Hyundai Motor’s popular “Kappa” engine family and incorporates a range of advanced technical features that raise power and torque, and enhance smoothness and driveability.

Outstanding features of the modern engine include: A dual overhead camshaft (DOHC), dual continuously variable valve timing (CVVT), a very stiff cast aluminium block with cast iron liners, aluminium cylinder head, lighter connecting rods and maintenance-free long-life timing chain.

Dual airbags - one for the front passenger and the other for the driver - and an Advances Brake System (ABS) take care of safety in the Grand i10.

Hamilton wins for Mercedes in China JUST about the only thing that was predictable for the 14th running of the Chinese Grand Prix is that Lewis Hamilton started from pole position alongside the Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel while Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen have locked out the second row of the grid.

Friday’s running at the Shanghai International Circuit was abandoned due to weather conditions prohibiting the medical helicopter from landing at the designated hospital in Shanghai.

It meant that teams and drivers entered into Sunday’s race with only the data and knowledge of the one-hour final practice session and whatever number of laps they completed in qualifying.

The weather conditions on Sunday were best described as dank as the field started the race on intermediate tyres. The only exception to this was Carlos Sainz in the Toro Rosso who opted to start the race on the dry, supersoft tyre, much to the dismay of his engineers. While the circuit was wet in some parts it was drying quickly in others and the intermediates were discarded within four laps.

A virtual safety car was deployed for the recovery of Lance Stroll’s Williams, which had been dumped off the circuit by Sergio Perez. It is at this point that Ferrari decided to call Sebastian Vettel into the pits for a change of boots. Unfortunately, a full safety car would be deployed shortly after to clear the heavily damaged Sauber of Antonio Giovinazzi.

This afforded race leader Hamilton a free pitstop, while Vettel was stuck behind a Verstappen/Ricciardo/Raikkonen train.

While Vettel launched a bid for recovery Hamilton was comfortable at the front and without any real pressure he could control

his pace. The cooler temperatures also played into Mercedes’ hand as it meant less tyre degradation.

Despite finishing second to Hamilton, Vettel delivered a telling performance in the Ferrari – taking into account that Hamilton had a free pitstop under the safety car and factoring in that Vettel lost a good amount of time behind the Ricciardo train.

The fact that he finished only six seconds off Hamilton indicates that Ferrari had a car that could’ve won the race.

Meanwhile, Max Verstappen brilliantly recovered his race and went from sixteenth to finish third ahead of teammate Daniel Ricciardo in fourth. The sister Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen finished in a frustrated fifth. While the Finn struggled through the race with an intermittent power issue, the Ferrari pitwall compounded his frustration by calling an absurd strategy.

Their inexplicable decision left Raikkonen out while all the front-running drivers made their stops, while the driver was adamant that the tyres would not make it to the end of the race. From the radio messages it was clear that Raikkonen had to force the issue and he eventually pitted – ten laps too late.

There weren’t a high a number of overtakes in this year’s race, but what we did see were several pretty spectacular overtakes. There were two from Vettel, one on his own teammate, and one around the outside of Daniel Ricciardo. There were several from Max Verstappen too and an especially spicy one from Romain Grosjean around the outside of turn two on Felipe Massa.

The point is that while there wasn’t a 100 passes there was genuine and very bold

overtakes that came about as a result of some driver heroics instead of being aided

by DRS. While conditions flattered Red Bull on the day Valtteri Bottas did not cover himself in glory as he spun out of contention early on. The Finn eventually finished sixth. Sainz, who had started the race on supersofts, drove brilliantly to recover from an early spin to finish a spectacular seventh.

Kevin Magnussen delivered Haas’ first points of the season in eighth ahead of the two Force India’s of Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon in ninth and tenth. Neither drivers of McLaren saw the chequered flag, as first Stoffel Vandoorne retired with a fuelpressure issue and later Fernando Alonso pulled into the garage with a driveshaft failure.

Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel head to the Bahrain GP this weekend equal on 43 points.

The hotter temperatures in Bahrain will boost Ferrari’s challenge in what is sure to be an enthralling battle with Mercedes.
