D­Day for local political parties contesting by­election NCEBA DLADLA

T

ODAY, Wednesday, November 5 is D-day for political parties contesting the by-elections in Wards 42 and 46 in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.

Democratic Alliance (DA) Caucus leader Retief Odendaal said the DA has never been this confident.

Both the Wards were led by the ruling ANC in Council. Andile Gqabi who was the Ward 42 Councillor was dismissed by the African National Congress (ANC) whereas Cllr Lucky Vumazonke had passed away.

The DA will put their trust in current councillor Nomakazi Cobo who is contesting Ward

42. Alvezo Fortuin, the current constituency manager, will contest Ward 46.

Odendaal said the DA received 25% of the votes in the two wards in the 2011 Local Government Elections.

“The two wards were traditionally run by the ANC. But we are confident that we have made so much ground,” said Odendaal.

“Both candidates have strong roots in their respective communities and have worked tirelessly to ensure that issues within the communities receive the attention they deserved,” said Odendaal.

Odendaal mentioned that he expected the byelection to be tough. He was, however, pleased that the DA was making inroads in the previously ANC-led wards in preparation for the 2016 Local Government Elections.

The ANC would, however, like to continue from where they have left off in the two Wards.

This is according to ANC Regional Secretary Zandisile Qupe.

Qupe said in Mazwanzima Mini (Ward 42) and Lindelwa Qukubana (Ward 46), they have fielded candidates who would continue with the task of delivering basic services to the electorate.

This was notwithstanding the service delivery challenges that were obvious especially in housing and rectification and especially in Ward 42.

He said these were actually Nelson Mandela Bay metro challenges and that they reminded residents of this fact during their visit to the Ward for electioneering.

“We hope voters will help us to continue the

good work the late Cllr Vumazonke did in Ward 46.

“He left a legacy, working for the ANC, so the ANC must be given a chance to continue the work,” said Qupe.

He added that as the ANC they were not bothered by Gqabi who is contesting the Ward, this time as an independent candidate.

According to media reports, former Cllr Gqabi, was asked by members of the community to stand as an independent candidate for his own former seat, because - unlike the ANC leadership - the electorate were reportedly satisfied with his work as Ward Councillor.

Ward 46 will also be contested by Khuselwa Ngxoweni of the Congress of the People (COPE) and Nomazizi Jama of the United Democratic Movement (UDM).

Basketball exec falls prey to email scamsters NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay Sports Council and Basketball South Africa NEC member Sibongile Fondini of Motherwell was targeted by criminals in an email scan.

Fondini discovered on Wednesday last week that his email account had been hacked and that an unknown person has been sending out emails using his account.

The hacker claimed that he (Fondini) was stranded somewhere in the Philippines and in need of cash.

“Somebody sent an email on my account pretending to be me and stranded abroad in Philippines and asking for money to return home.”

According to Fondini, the shocking email was sent to all his contacts across the country; including those in the media.

Fondini is a member of the Disability Sport

Committee under Eastern Cape Sports Confederation and EC Chairperson of Wheelchair Basketball Eastern Cape.

He has popularised basketball in many of the townships in the province.

Even though he has reported the case to the SAPS in Motherwell, Fondini asked PE Express Indaba to report on the email scam, because he was concerned about the number of people who might have received the email and acted on it.

He was also concerned that the email could have tainted his image and ruined his reputation.

“I’d also like to warn the public to be cautious of the loopholes in this digital age,” he said.

Owing to the hacking he could not access his email account for a while. He has, however, tried to phone and send text messages to everyone who may have received the email to warn them to ignore it.

Municipality to install green energy in informal settlements INDABA REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality will be implementing a pilot project for non-grid solar home systems which means the installation of green electricity at shacks, making it one of the first local authorities in the country to do so.

Standing Committee Chairperson for Infrastructure, Engineering, Electricity and Energy, Andile Mfunda, said money has been allocated as part of the Department of Energy’s Integrated National Electrification Pro-

gramme (INEP) through which capital subsidies are provided to municipalities to address the electrification backlog.

“The project will be for the supply and installation of a 12 volt Solar Home System to informal dwellings – specifically those on unproclaimed sites that fall outside the 7-year housing programme of the municipality.

“The first phase is expected to consist of approximately 3 000 installations of a basic Photo Voltaic System that consist of one PV panel, a battery, charge controller, four LED lights with switches and a 12V car cigarette lighter socket to charge mobile phones.

“Depending on the success of the pilot phase and the availability of additional funding, the provision of cooking appliances such as Gel Stoves could also be provided.

“In addition to this, approximately 50 solar streetlights/floodlights will be installed,” Mfunda motivated.

The cost for the solar streetlights is estimated at R2,1 million, the installation of the non-grid home solar system at R12,9 million and R7 million for the maintenance and monitoring of the system.

Dr John Kani gives actors tips to succeed NCEBA DLADLA BEFORE he left these shores to go back to a place of gold where he has found his second home, thespian and film actor, playwright and director John Kani conversed with the people involved with the PE Opera House.

The internationally renowned Dr Kani, who was in Nelson Mandela Bay to perform his latest work “Missing” at the PE Opera House from October 28 to November 1, took the time out to speak with the PE Opera House management and actors about their roles in the industry.

In what was referred to as conversations with the Tony Award winner, the seasoned New Brighton-born actor who was with fellow actor Susan Danford, first applauded PE Opera House General Manager Monde Ngonyama for his transformation work at the

historic institution.

“The PE Opera House may transform from only receiving to start commissioning works as well,” said Kani. He added that he was not happy, for instance, to only come here only to present his work. He said it was time that he was called to perform any other work from other playwrights and producers.

He mentioned the way he, with members of the Serpent Players in 1965, started professionalising their work and made money from it.

He told actors to be the marketers of their work as “Theatre is serious business”.

“Management must plan for the future.

Board members and members of staff have a responsibility to bring paying audiences to the shows. It is your responsibility, all of you, to bring patrons. You must understand where you fit in the production machine,” said Dr Kani, adding that it was important for them to keep on upskilling.

PE township schools receive assistance from Tutudesks NCEBA DLADLA THE Archbishop TutuDesk Campaign was in Nelson Mandela Bay township schools last week Wednesday to deliver part of the 5 000 desks meant to assist school-going children without desks.

KQFM’s Lungi Menze was born for radio NCEBA DLADLA LUNGISWA Menze, the presenter of Inkqubela FM Community Radio’s Masiphuhlisane Magazine Programme and Isikhungo Religious Programme on Thursdays, was born for radio.

Lungi (29), as Menze is affectionately known to a myriad of KQFM listeners at 97.0 FM is one of popular names at the station which is based at the OR Tambo Community Centre in Zwide.

“I do Masiphuhlisane every Monday to Wednesday from 9am to 12 noon to give listeners a platform to talk about personal issues,” said Lungi.

She explained that these included relationships, neighbourly matters, work and family issues.

“Through dialogue, communities find solutions to their everyday problems in the programme,” said Lungi.

She makes use of professionals from FAMSA as well as psychologists to help listeners deal decisively with their problems.

The switch to Isikhungo programme, on the other hand, gives listeners an opportunity to tap into their spiritual realm.

Lungi, a member of the True Faith Church under Apostle VW Kula in Kwaza-

khele, says she prays and invokes the power of the holy spirit to guide her during the show which, according to the latest RAMS, is seeing a tremendous growth.

Isikhungo offers Bible reading, preaching and listening to moving gospel songs.

It challenges the residents to the core of their spiritual being.

“Listeners are also involved in the programme. They witness through testimonies and many more accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour,” said Lungi proudly.

She added, “We do church announcements in the programme. Gospel artists market their shows while we also invite preachers from different church denominations.”

Lungi, who recently started a webpage for Women on the Move, gets invitations to talk to women and youth groups from around the metro and surrounding areas.

“This started as a career move from someone who just loved radio. I however, have a feeling that God has called me to do this. And, I am enjoying it. For me, it is therapeutic.”

Mother of an 8-year-old daughter Lihle, Lungi hopes to own a very successful events company in the near future.

The campaign is led by the arch’s daughter Thandeka Tutu-Gxashe, who is the Tutudesks’ Director for Stakeholder Relations, in conjunction with the Department of Education in the PE District, MySchool and the Woolworths Trust.

Last week they visited children of Seyisi Primary School in Kwazakhele and Ntyantyambo Primary School in Zwide Township.

Delivering the desks at Seyisi Primary School, Tutu-Gxashe said, “We believe that the Tutudesk Campaign has the ability to change and improve the lives of millions of African children and collaborating with international education programmes and prestige South African organisations such as My-

School and the Woolworths Trust will assist us to stay on track for our 2010 goals.”

Tutu-Gxashe said they were aware that there were many schools in need of desks but decided, working with private sector companies, to make a difference at these two schools.

People can contribute to the campaign by filling in a MySchool form at Woolworths to help a school get the basics for education.

The Department of Education’s George Lukwe, who spoke on behalf of the District Director Dr Nyathi Ntsiko who could not attend owing to other pressing demands of work, thanked the partnership between the Tutudesks, Woolworths Trust and MySchool.

“This donation will inspire our children to do well in education. We thank you and hope that other (big businesses) will follow suit to help make this world a better place for our children through education,” said Lukwe.

The children were urged to take care and preserve the desks so that they could still be usable for many years to come.

Prize-giving held to encourage hard work at Ben Nyathi Primary School NCEBA DLADLA TOWNSHIP schools should continue to do something that would attract pupils to them, and not bow down to defeat as throngs leave them for former Model C schools.

This is according to Ben Nyathi Primary School principal, Mazotsho Dukwe, who spoke to PE Express Indaba at his school’s prize-giving ceremony at Daku Hall last Friday.

“We have set aside this day as a school to honour and motivate pupils who put in extra effort in both academic and extra-mural

activities,” said Dukwe, adding that they were also looking at the behavioural performance and discipline of the children from Grade 1-7.

This is an annual event at Ben Nyathi Primary School to say to the pupils and parents taking their children to the school, the academic and extra-curricular performances were monitored and that while remedial means were utilised for those lagging behind, pupils with outstanding performances were recognised and rewarded by the school.

Grade 7 pupil Zintle Mbolekwa was the top performer with eight awards out of nine

learning areas.

The fact that this is a no-fee school based in a poverty-stricken area without adequate resources was no deterrent, according to Dukwe. It is, instead, events like these that, he felt, attracted many pupils to his school.

“We give excelling pupils certificates as tokens of appreciation - as something that would always remind them of their time at the school and the recognition of their performance par excellence,” said Dukwe, adding that they always encouraged their pupils to go out and excel at high school as well as at university.

“Ideally, we do not want our pupils to

think less of their school. Instead, we want them to take pride in their school,” Dukwe said.

This project also united the teaching staff and school management into one purpose.

“We work together to encourage hardwork among our children, We don’t want to see any of them falling by the wayside,” said Head of Department (HOD) Siziwe Thomas.

They invited a young professional Mihlali Matiwane to speak and encourage the pupils.

The school’s Grade R prize-giving will be held at the same venue today, Wednesday, November 5.

Seventh heaven awaits spectators in Nelson Mandela Bay REPORTER DURING December, the proverbial seventh heaven will once more become a firm and very exciting reality when Nelson Mandela Bay plays host to the South African leg of the IRB Sevens Rugby World Series.

On December 13 and 14, spectators will be afforded the thrilling experience of seeing the world’s best on the field, while off-field a world of wonders awaits, as the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro and surrounds rise to the occasion with its customary hospitality and an abundance of spectacular sights and sounds to absorb.

According to Port Elizabeth-born, veteran Blitzbok-forward, Frankie Horne, he could think of no better venue to host the South African leg of the HSBC IRB Sevens.

“PE is known as the ‘Friendly City’ and this really is true. I may be slightly biased, but when it comes to the beautiful beaches, the friendly people and the excellent facilities, I could think of no better place in the country to host this leg of the tournament.”

Horne – who holds the world record for 60 consecutive World Series tournaments for the Springbok Sevens – said apart from his passion for the region, a bit of superstition may also form part of his preference for playing the SA leg at the world-class Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

“Last year we beat New Zealand in the final at the Nelson Mandela Stadium just two days after the passing of our late former President Nelson Mandela. We played for Madiba on that day.”

According to Horne, the crowd support at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is another reason why the team loves playing here. “It

is the home leg of the tournament and it always is great playing in front of a home crowd. But the supporters in Port Elizabeth take home-based support to a whole new level. The way in which supporters here carry the players is not found anywhere else in the country.”

Visiting the Addo Elephant National Park just outside of Port Elizabeth, ahead of the official launch (which took place on Wednesday, October 29 in PE) of the Cell C Nelson Mandela Bay Sevens tournament, Horne said tourism hot-spots like this add to the perfect bouquet for tournament supporters. “Not only can supporters view world-class 7s rugby, but also world-class tourism attractions.”

Jonker Fourie, Chief Executive Officer of the Emfuleni Corridor Tourism (Ectour), echoed Horne’s sentiments by saying that the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro and surrounds offer more treasures than even most locals are aware of.

“The allure of our attractions lies as much in the ease of access as in the variety of what is on offer.” According to Fourie the area boasts numerous attractions to suit everyone’s taste and budget.

Interesting international amateur bouts in Bay NCEBA DLADLA THE Lower Saxony Open Boxing Federation Team visit to the Eastern Cape was finalised at the Lilian Ngoyi Sport Centre in Kwazakhele on Saturday.

After the delivery of interesting bouts against their Eastern Cape Amateur Boxing Organisatiobn (ECABO) counterparts, in East London (Buffalo City Metropolitan), Mthatha (OR Tambo District) and finally Nelson Mandela Bay Metro), the team from

the Federal Republic of Germany spent Sunday and Monday on a walkabout in the metro and the surrounding areas before they jetted off to Germany yesterday.

The visit was part of the bilateral agreement signed between the EC Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) and the State of Lower Saxony in the Federal Republic of Germany to share skills in sport, education, safety and economic development among others.

Hosts ECABO led by president Vuyolwethu Mtekwana and EC Sports Confeder-

ation president Khusta Magada watched Eastern Cape boxers showing their mettle against their international opposition and concluded the match-ups were good for the development of the sport and preparatory ground for 2016 Olympics in Rio, Brazil.

“German boxers faced three different opponents in the different venues,” said ECABO president Mtekwana, adding that German male boxers faced stiff opposition - winning some and losing some of the bouts, while female boxers on the other

hand, remained unbeaten in all three venues.

“They’ve got a very strong women’s team, but on our side, our best lasdies have just turned professional. So, all it means we need to work hard to train the women that we have in open boxing,” said Mtekwana.

South African National Amateur Boxing Organisation (SANABO) president Andile Mofu who was also present at the Lillian Ngoyi tournament hailed the EC for hosting such a huge contingency and showing the best performances.

Manchester Ladies FC must play against a team from the Transkei to determine the team that will represent Eastern Cape during the Sasol Ladies Competition Final whose date and place will be determined by SAFA very soon, Konono told PE Express Indaba Sport.

“Out of 14 matches that we played in the league this season, we lost only one and drew two,” said an upbeat Konono, adding that this was no fluke as they beat formidable teams from the province.

“We wanted to show that we are not in the league to add numbers,” he said.

Konono rattled off names like Fort Hare United FC (from Alice), City Lads FC, Thanda Birds, Continental (Butterworth) and Liverpool as teams that they had to overcome this season, to prove their mettle.

Konono commended coach Archie Dyeli’s work with the girls who have also shown tremendous dedication to the sport. He said are still at school.

The other good strategy they have used lay in the use of goal-keeper coach, Mthobeli Kasike, according to Konono. He said their goal-keeper Ntombizanele Mangali conceded only nine goals this season.

“Our coach makes the ladies train with Khayelitsha United, a male team. That’s why these girls play like they are possessed. They work hard together as a team when they win the ball. And, it is the same when they lose it. They don’t give opposition any space to play,” said Konono.

He thanked prolific goal scorers Sesethu Skotshi, Thembakazi Tola, Ncamisa Vena and Siphokazi Nxakala for helping them this season while captain Sesethu Slkhotshi thanked management for believing in them, their families and the fans for their support.
