The Old Man and the Sea PDF In the 'The Old Man and the Sea', the writer narrates about the struggle of an old, professional fisherman for the best catch of his life. Santiago, a matured fisherman from Cuba, went out for fishing but returned with empty hands for eighty-four days. Due to this unfortunate situation, the elders of his young and sincere companion and student, Manolin, have instructed him to search for some other successful fisherman instead of assisting Santiago. Even then, Manolin looks after him upon his arrival every night. He enables the old man to haul his fishing gear, prepares food for him. And updates him about the American baseball and his favorite hero, Joe DiMaggio. Santiago has faith that one day his unlucky period will end soon, so this time he prepares to sail out far away. As per his commitment, Santiago leaves the island's shallow waters and enters into the Gulf Stream, on the 85th day of his unfortunate period. He prepares his fishing line and drops sixhundred-foot deep in water. At twelve, Santiago feels that some big fish, that may be marlin, holds the bait. He successfully hooks the fish but cannot haul it in the boat, instead Santiago pulled by fish. In a fear that fish would lose the line, he is not able to attach the line with the boat. So, old man bears all pressure of fishing line on his shoulders, hands, and back prepared to give slack when fish makes a run. The fish keep pulling his boat for two days and nights in the northwest direction until it tires and swims in the east with the boat. During all this time, fishing line cause pain and badly hurts Santiago especially when fish thrusts, jump or eagerly try for freedom. In spite of all pain and efforts, the old man offers appreciation for the marlin and refers him as his brother. The effort of continuous two days tired the fish, so a restless Santiago manages to pull the fish so close that he kills it with a spear. Then he observed that it is the biggest fish he ever was seen. He sets his sail towards home. He feels happy when counting the market value of marlin, but he is more concerned that people are not worthy to eat this great fish.
