Description

As a Lutheran, the Reformation is a pivotal part of our doctrine and history. Numerous scholars gave their theological expertise to debates during the time, and there were many rises, falls, and splits that occurred in the German Lutheran Church. A History of the Dissolution of the Ancient Liturgical Forms in the Lutheran Church surveys the liturgical life of the German Lutheran Church from the Reformation through to the nineteenth century, giving you a glimpse into this important period.

This robust book dives into primary sources and carefully traces the rise, decline, and dissolution of specific forms—both individual elements of the Divine Service, such as sermon greeting, and entire church orders. Author Paul Graff (1878-1955) reveals the interplay of doctrine and liturgical life in the daily and weekly rhythm of the Lutheran Church in Germany.

This hardcover book contains over 800 pages of rich, academic discussions. There are five sections total, each one including its own appendices on specific topics such as gestures of worship, hymnody and devotional life, and the worship of the Roman Catholic Church. Individual chapters also discuss church architecture, furnishings, liturgical attire, and more throughout the period.
