Brothers, This issue represents the centennial issue of The Communicator! While working on this issue, I was browsing through our history book (Yes, we have a history book and yes, you should get one and read it!) and couldn’t help but notice that, while many things have changed in the world, some issues the Fraternity faced 50 or 100 years ago are similar to the issues we are grappling with today!

Inside this issue you will find an article in which five living Grand Past Presidents talk about the issues they faced during their tenure, changes they had to make, as well as some interesting stories about Brothers who helped shape them over the years!

The final comment I have to offer is advice to our collegiate Brothers. Having recently finished a pharmacy practice residency and entered the “real world” as an Army pharmacist, I advise you to make time for your personal hobbies. At least keep a list of things you want to do when you have more time. If you want to have a successful career as a pharmacist, you need to stay motivated and stay involved. The only way to do that (and still be sane) is if you also have a life outside of pharmacy! www.phideltachi.org

IN THE GLOW OF THE LAMP

From Carrier Pigeons to the Little Blue Bird We live in a time where changes in the way we connect to one another and share information are happening at lightning speed. We often wonder where we will be in the future without remembering where we were in the past.

For example, did you know that… ?

• Drum messages could travel 100mph in 6,000 BC • 250,000 carrier pigeons were used by the British during WWII • The first email traveled just one meter between two computers • It took a decade to make the first mobile phone call Since the dawn of time, humans have had to communicate with each other in some way or another.

This necessitated the development of ingenious, yet primitive, methods of communication.

In the Beginning…

The earliest evidence of communication came from Africa, where in 6,000 BC, drums were used to send messages between tribes. It took more than 5,000 years after this for the first postal service to be invented in Ancient Persia. The prime purpose was intelligence gathering. It wasn’t long before many other civilizations came up with their own versions of mailing systems. It was in China in 200BC when we first saw the use of smoke signals as a form of communication. The Chinese would use these signals to warn of military threats. This is a method that was also used by Native American Indians as they attempted to fend off European invaders in the 1500s.

Progress…

It was in 1727 that electricity was successfully transmitted over a total distance of 700 ft via a wire suspended in the air by silk threads. However, it was an artist by the name of Samuel Morse, along with two physicists, who developed the first fully-fledged electrical telegraph system. A code was needed to translate the electronic pulses into language and this led to what we now know as Morse code. By 1895, Western Union was transmitting over 58 million telegraph messages per year. With the arrival of powered flight, letters were widely used and sent via airmail. This meant that hand-written letters could be received across the world in a matter of days, as opposed to weeks and months, as was the case with mail sent by sea.

The Electronic Era… It was the emergence of the World Wide Web that really revolutionized global communication.

The Internet introduced us to email, which is probably the most important method of communication used in this century, allowing us to send letters to anyone, anywhere in the world, instantly. It allows us to include attachments, such as documents and photographs that would have most likely been a very suspicious practice as viewed by our colonial ancestors living in the time of the witch trials. Not only are they fast, but free! In my opinion, the most notable change in the way we communicate is the use of mobile phones. These devises are arguably the greatest invention of the 20th century.

The ability to talk anywhere without being fixed to a landline is a luxury most of us have embraced.

In fact, it’s hard to imagine life without cell phones, especially since the introduction of smartphones, allowing us to organize our lives with the swipe of a screen. For better or worse, this has led to our social lives being increasingly dominated by social media sites, such as Twitter (that little blue bird) and Facebook.

Only time will tell what the future has in store for us, but we certainly have come a long way from drums and smoke signals! Check out this issue, which celebrates our beloved publication, The Communicator, and remember a great man once said, “Communication is key, knowledge is power!”

I

n 2014, Phi Delta Chi’s national publication, The Communicator, marks its 100th volume. Don’t let the numbers fool you, the big news is that this is the 125th anniversary of our magazine.

Confused? Allow me to explain…

In publishing terms, a volume is the numerical designator for a year of serial publications. The first issue of The Communicator in 2014 is designated volume 100, number 1. Logically, one would expect volume 1, number 1 to have been published in early 1915. But, alas, our history is not that straightforward. Indeed, The Communicator has been blessed with no fewer than five issues designated as volume 1, number 1. These were released in 1889, 1899, 1906, 1909, and 1911. It isn’t easy to publish a magazine.

Volume I, Five Different Times The first Communicator, published in 1889, was Alpha Chapter’s effort to convey news about Ann Arbor activities to its alumni Brothers. Consider that Beta Chapter (Northwestern University) was not initiated until 1896. That 1889 issue survives and can be viewed at the phideltachi.org website phideltachi.org/index.php/ resources/communicator. Issues from 1890 to 1896 did not survive, but the June 1897 issue does.

As time went on, the magazine transformed from a local to a national perspective. Just like today, it was difficult for volunteer Brothers to carve out time from their work and family lives to consistently write and edit Fraternity news. Finally, in February 1911, the Volume I, Number 1 that today’s publication refers back to, was published.

Spanning Coast to Coast Vol. I, No. I (1889) Salutatory read: “In this, our first issue, we shall aim to enlighten you as to our present standing and condition generally; then, if your best judgement and reflection decide that each brother should be contented with his present lot and the only object set down in our constitution is to confine your work to a few active members in this city alone, we shall be forced to succumb.”

A December 1907 news article notes the motivations (and the difficulties) of that time: “Prompted by the desire to bring the ten Chapters (now twelve) of Phi Chi Fraternity in closer touch with one another, the members of Grand Council, in 1906, decided to publish The Communicator again, which for several years had been dormant. They realized that in a Fraternity of ten Chapters, scattered from the Atlantic to the Pacific, there would be less co-operation among the Chapters than if such an official paper were published.”

It’s easy to forget that travel from Eta Chapter in Boston to Zeta Chapter in San Francisco in the 1900s required multiple days on several trains. Commercial radio stations did not come on the scene until the early 1920s. Long-distance communications were limited to short telegraphic messages or the U.S. mail.

At the 7th Grand Council (Chicago, 1906), Bro. Eli Lilly (Epsilon) was elected editor-in-chief for the ensuing year.

“Naturally, there were a great many obstacles in the way, but Bro. Lilly met and overcame each one as it presented itself.

Many a person would have been discouraged and have given up in despair, but he stood out to the end. Much credit is due him, for it was no small undertaking.” [Comm. Dec 1907:2] Bro. Lilly produced a surplus of $7.55 after receiving $164.61 in income for the year. For many years, the subscription fee was $1.00 a year, paid in advance. “Please remit in New York or Boston funds, Express or P.O. money order.” Using our Fraternity’s original two-word name, the title page of a 1909 edition reads: The Phi Chi Communicator. A Journal of College and Fraternity Life and Literature, as related to Pharmacy, devoted to the interests of the Phi Chi Fraternity. Editors in the early part of the 20th century sometimes referred to their products as ’Cators. As Europe struggled, the June 1917 issue boldly included “War Number” in red ink on a white cover. During the war years of 1917–1918, only two issues per year appeared. The academic year of 1919–1920 saw no issues.

Gaps to Regularity to Gaps Again Issues ranged from thin to fat over the years, reflecting times that were variously lean or ample in terms of volunteer time and financial resources available to devote to communication.

Throughout the history of Phi Delta Chi, publication regularity bowed periodically to the exigencies of human nature. The most common number of issues per year was four. But many years saw one, two, or three issues. No issues were released in 1919, 1946, 2001, and 2002.

Regularity returned in 1923, when Brother Rand P. Hollenback (Xi) became Editor-in-Chief. Hollenback was a chemicalengineering major, but never worked in that role, as he joined the printing business his father had established in Columbus, Ohio. Despite the Great Depression, quarterly Communicators measuring 6x9" appeared regularly. In 1935, the editor’s role was 6

renamed Grand Editor. Hollenback continued in this role until 1947, some 25 years. For many of these years, from 1935 until his death in December 1965, Hollenback also served as the Fraternity’s Grand Secretary (now called Executive Director). Eventually, in 1987, the editor’s role was renamed the Grand Vice President for Communications.

Troubles came in 1939, when only a January issue was published. From 1940 through 1944, Hollenback released thinner, 7x10" Communicator Juniors, 3 to 12 times per year. Two Communicators were issued in 1945, but none in 1946. In the early 1950s, two issues per year were the norm. Four per year resumed in 1957. The Communicator adopted its current 8x11” format with the 1970 year (volume LIX). We switched from Roman numerals (volume LXIV in 1975) to Arabic numbers (volume 65 in 1976).

Difficulties with consistent publication recurred in 1978, the early 1980s, and the early 2000s. Ironically, the introduction of desktop publishing in the late 1990s and early 2000s should have made publication easier. But volunteer effort is too often the most scarce resource.

Where did we lose volume numbers between 1911 and 2014?

At several points. Volume XI was used throughout both 1921 and 1922. Much of the disorder was more recent. Issues in both 1999 and 2000 were designated volume 88. No issues were produced in 2001 or 2002. Then the 2003 issues resumed with volume 89.

Communication in the Digital Era With modern communication mechanisms, is a print publication still important to Phi Delta Chi? Only the Brothers can answer that question. Brothers now span five time zones and probably thousands of counties. Travel from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast now takes just a few hours, and Gamma Theta www.phideltachi.org

Chapter in Hilo, Hawaii, is only a few hours further.

Email and the Fraternity’s websites allow near instantaneous access to information, if one seeks it.

But what other ways do we have to put the same material in front of each collegiate Brother (or dues-paying alumni Brother) in a way they can reflect on content and share the same experience?

Our Fraternity has always used a mixed set of communication vehicles to collect and exchange information.

A variety of shorter, more frequent newsletters have long been a part of the mix. In this tradition, today’s e-Communicator serves a useful monthly role in efficient notifications.

Perhaps one way of explaining the timeless need for communication among Brothers would be to quote Rand Hollenback in 1955: “A complaint heard by national officers frequently is that the individual alumnus hears from his chapter only upon occasion when a donation is needed and requested for some purpose. I guess we are all used to the fact that we hear from many sources when a contribution is the prime motive. These may be charitable, civic, political or religious organizations but they all sound alike. We should make our fraternity different and let everyone hear from us frequently, giving them something and not asking.” —Rand P. Hollenback [Comm. Mar 1955:6-7]. can’t think of a word that has been used more frequently over the past several years than “change.” For some of you, the word may trigger memories of Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign slogan, “Hope and Change.” For others it may remind you about some policy or procedure that recently changed in your workplace. If you’re a pharmacist or pharmacy student, it may remind you about the continual push within our profession to change the way we are recognized by society. I’m not sure about you, but even when things are relatively the same, I can always count on Apple to at least change their “End user license agreement” and make me once again decide whether to sign my life over to them, or stop using my iPhone. I’m still using my iPhone.

With all the change that constantly seems to be going on, I thought it would be an interesting exercise to stop for a minute and turn to our Fraternity’s past leaders to see what issues they faced during their tenure. I was curious, did they face the same issues or have the issues changed? Maybe we are we still facing the same issues and need some radical change?

There were not really a lot of challenges back in those days. Everything pretty much operated smoothly. We had a lot of new programs that were rolling out simultaneously and everyone had to stay focused.

7. Can you tell us a memorable story about a Brother who made an impact on your life?

There were way too many that made an impact, the Fraternity as a whole made an impact. After all the years I have served the Fraternity, I still feel that I can never give back as much as the Fraternity has given me, BUT I will say that there was a Fraternity Brother that I met at a Grand Council that has been at my wedding, the birth of my son, and my mother’s funeral.

8. What Fraternity accomplishment are you most proud of?

I am proud that I was around for the infant stages of LDS and the CHEQ program, and in my last speech as GP, I pushed the new EC to quit talking about a Foundation and do it. BUT an unknown and unheralded accomplishment was to be involved with saving a chapter from going inactive. AAAE

John D. Grabenstein, Grand President 1995–1999 1. When did you first become a Brother of Phi Delta Chi? Beta Gamma Chapter, Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, spring 1976.

2. What was your first Grand Council and what do you remember about it?

Lake Tahoe, 1978: eight Brothers driving two vehicles from Pittsburgh to Tahoe and back, plus the camaraderie of that week, remains one of the most horizonexpanding events of my life.

3. What was going on in the world at the time when you were Grand President?

I was motivated to “step up” from being a perennial Grand Vice President, to run for GP, by the Republican effort to remake the U.S. House of Representatives. It’s a loose connection (there was no political analogy), but I thought it was time for me to see if the Brothers wanted me to lead them.

4. What were the top issues facing the Fraternity at the time?

Perennially struggling chapters, inadequate and insecure finances, difficulty recruiting Chapter Advisors, willingness to confront inappropriate behavior by certain chapters and individual Brothers.

5. How many chapters were there when you were GP? We had reached Beta Xi (Midwestern) before I was elected GP. I was proud to preside over the chartering of Beta Omicron (Texas Southern) during my tenure.

I never expected there would be a possibility of getting to the Delta level of chapters—ever. During those years, there were 76 schools of pharmacy, which was a slight increase from the 72 schools that had been the exact total for decades. When I checked the ACPE website in July 2014, there were 114 accredited schools of pharmacy, with 15 schools having candidate status, and two having pre-candidate status. www.phideltachi.org

6. What was the biggest challenge that you faced?

Balancing the Fraternity’s dreams of extending its leadership programs with a precarious financial situation of having difficulty paying our bills.

7. Can you tell us a funny story about a Brother who is no longer able to be with us?

My college mentor was Alvin M. Galinsky (Grand President 1978–1981), who was Beta Gamma’s Faculty Advisor. One evening, Brother Al (we called him “Doc”) visited the Beta Gamma dorm area after work, and he had his briefcase with him (a rigid container people carried before laptop computers were invented). I started fiddling with the numeric locks on his briefcase, using various combinations of his birthday. On the second try, I “picked his lock” and opened his briefcase. He expressed dismay and I was a bit sheepish.

Ever since, I have used that same number myself for my own locks.

8. What are you most proud of?

It was work I did before becoming Grand President: being the principal author of the curriculum for the first Leader Development Seminar (LDS) in 1989 in Monterey, Calif.

Ralph Saroyan, Grand President 1981–1989 1. When did you first become a Brother of Phi Delta Chi? I was initiated during my freshmen year at the University of the Pacific as Alpha Psi #128 on May 1, 1960, the second of four Saroyans to be inducted into the Alpha Psi Chapter.

2. What was your first Grand Council and what do you remember about it?

As a student, my first national meeting of PDC was the 45th Grand Council, December, 1963, in San Francisco. What I remember the most about that meeting was the Alpha Psi Chapter proposed the Phi Delta Chi Drinking Song, which was written in my dorm room by several Brothers in 1961 or 62, can’t remember the exact year. Also, the Alpha Psi Brothers formed a Dixieland group we called the Tranquilizers and we performed for the Brothers. 2. What was your first Grand Council and what do you remember about it?

My first Grand Council was 1995 in Memphis Tenn. This was the Grand Council where we took our first steps toward our national philanthropic effort of St Jude, when the Omega Chapter put it forth for the Brotherhood to consider. I also remember going with Ralph Saroyan to the Memphis Pharaohs Arena football game in the Pyramid Arena. We also were hit the first night by the remnants of Hurricane Erin and it washed out our opening party on the Plantation Rooftop of the Peabody Hotel. We had to move the party indoors.

3. What was going on in the world at the time when you were Grand President?

2003 • We were two years out from 9/11 and the war was hot and heavy.

• The top issue was moving to a management corporation to run the day-to-day operations of the Fraternity. There was much debate over this with many Brothers in opposition to the move.

The issue was not so much that an outside group could run our operations, it was that non-Brothers would run the Fraternity.

• We also had money issues that were compounded by the move to the management corporation.

5. How many chapters were there when you were GP? I do not remember how many chapters there were at the time.

We were still in the Betas at the time.

I was in Virginia and the Chapter Advisor at Beta Pi which was chartered in 1998 and was still a new chapter between 2003–2005.

6. What was your biggest challenge that you faced?

The biggest challenge was getting the Brotherhood to understand the management corporation and how it would work with the Fraternity. Along with that was getting the management corporation to understand how to work with the Fraternity.

Neither group had experience with the other and there was a constant need to educate both groups about the other.

I remember numerous meetings with the management group in an attempt to get them to understand our structure and our need for reports. I am not sure they ever understood what we did.

7. Can you tell us a memorable story about a Brother who made an impact on your life?

After nearly 25 years in academia, 27 years as a pharmacist and 30 years as a Brother of Phi Delta Chi, there are numerous Brothers who have impacted my life. Unfortunately, I cannot discuss them individually in this document. The one that stands out over the years is Chris Lynch. Chris was a Navy radioman right out of high school. After his tour of duty, Chris worked and attended school to prepare him for pharmacy school. When he was in pharmacy school at Nova Southeastern University (NSU), he would entertain the Brothers of the Beta Lambda Chapter with stories of his exploits in the Navy. Chris was lucky to get a Navy commission and scholarship during his final years at NSU. Chris was always very outgoing and laughing about everything. What most did not know was Chris worked outside of school, had a family, and tried to

Tony Mitchum, GP 1989–1995; John Grabenstein, GP 1995–1999; Thomas Ellington, GP 2003–2005, and Song You, GP 2005–2009. balance his world as best he could. I always admired the way he seemed to have it all together when it came time to perform.

Chris, however, was the first to say he did not do well and the first to admit it was his fault. Now a Commander in the Navy, Chris has won numerous awards and commendations from the Navy for his work in training pharmacists and technicians. For me, Brother Lynch embodies what we mean when we say we are Leaders in Pharmacy.

8. What Fraternity accomplishment are you most proud of?

For most of the 30 years as a Brother of Phi Delta Chi, I have been a faculty advisor for various chapters of the Fraternity.

It is not glamorous work to be a faculty advisor, and yet I find it fulfilling. Knowing that you are helping a group of young pharmacists sort out their lives, even in a small way, has its own reward. As a faculty advisor, we serve as a link between the academic world and the work world. As alumni return to the school or gather at conventions, they look for familiar faces.

One of those faces they seek is that of the faculty advisor. They want to catch up on chapter news and the happenings at the “school.” Chapter advisors serve as a source of history for the chapter and can be an anchoring force within a chapter when needed. Brandon Sucher, Grand President 2009–2011 in Japan triggered a tsunami—killing thousands of people and also triggered the second largest nuclear accident in history at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.

1. When did you first become a Brother of Phi Delta Chi? I was initiated into the Beta Rho Chapter at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center on May 1, 1999.

2. What was your first Grand Council and what do you remember about it?

My first Grand Council was the 62nd Grand Council in San Diego, Calif. in 1999. I had attended ASHP Midyear in 1998 and the APhA Annual Meeting in 1999 prior to Grand Council. Relative to these meetings, I remember being particularly impressed with how much content of Grand Council was devoted to helping undergraduate chapters learn how to function effectively and improve. There were numerous opportunities to learn from other chapters, and I tried to absorb as much as I could. It was a special time for Beta Rho, as we received our charter and were recognized as the newest chapter in Phi Delta Chi at the banquet. I also remember a large group of Brothers heading down to Tijuana one evening. A riot broke out in the streets that same evening as Mexico beat Brazil in the Confederations Cup. My friend and I found sanctuary in the back of a pickup truck with a Mariachi band. We shared our beer with them, and they shared their trumpets with us. As the truck drove slowly in the traffic jam, I looked up to see a group of Brothers cheering at us from the balcony of a second-story bar. It was a good adventure.

3. What was going on in the world at the time you were Grand President?

United States Special Forces killed Osama bin Laden. NASA’s Space Shuttle program ended. The New Orleans Saints won their first Super Bowl. An earthquake www.phideltachi.org

4. What were the top issues facing the Fraternity at the time?

Our Fraternity was experiencing tremendous growth that paralleled growth in the number of new schools of pharmacy. By 2011, Phi Delta Chi was projected to have an average of 14 chapters per region. This was significantly higher compared to other professional pharmacy fraternities and organizations. Given our current and projected growth at that time, increasing the support system for chapters by increasing the number of regions emerged as the top goal for our Fraternity.

5. How many chapters were there when you were GP? 71 active undergraduate chapters and 16 inactive undergraduate chapters 6. What was the biggest challenge that you faced?

Our chapters were organized into 5 regions in 1968, which had served us well for many years. I’m sure thousands of Brothers benefited enormously, because of the support offered through those regions. Our Fraternity had changed in important ways. Where visits to chapters were rarely documented, now they were consistently and thoroughly documented for future visits to build upon. Where Grand Councils, Leader-Development Seminars, and Regional Conferences were planned, scheduled, and promoted only months before their event dates, now planning began more than a year before their event dates. Where opportunities for PDC chapters existed in 80 schools of pharmacy, there were now more than 120 schools of pharmacy. Where once chapters heard from a Regional Officer occasionally, now chapters expected communications from a Regional Officer at least monthly. Where support for new chapters lied within only National and Regional Officers, now alumni served as colony coordinators to provide additional support. Where once the day-to-day operations lied on the shoulders of a single individual, our executive director, now we used a management company that employed three people. Where once writ-

ten communication from the Executive Council and Regional Officers occurred a few times a year, now written communication occurred more than once a month through our e-Communicator and publication, The Communicator.

In this new context, our 5 regions began to show their age—they weren’t serving their chapters well. They didn’t help us adapt well to changing conditions. They slowed us down. The first evidence of this was in the 1990s. The Fraternity had grown to a point of needing another region.

Before the 1990s, whenever the Fraternity added about 10 chapters, we added another region, beginning with 3 regions, then 4, then 5. After 20 years of being organized into 5 regions, the regions became a subfamily for us. I wasn’t just a Phi Delta Chi Brother. I wasn’t just a Beta Rho Brother. I was also a Southcentral Brother. There was so much regional identity that a creative alternative was explored. Instead of increasing the number of regions, we increased the number of regional officers in some of the regions, creating co-directors.

Between 1992 and 2005, 11 new chapters were chartered and 2 chapters were reactivated. Instead of growing by 13 active chapters, we grew by only 1 active chapter and 12 inactive chapters. Looking back, it seemed that for every chapter we chartered or reactivated, another chapter became inactive.

The next four years from 2005 to 2009, our Fraternity experienced unprecedented growth with five chartered chapters and one reactivated chapter; however, one chapter went inactive. This rapid growth created the sense of urgency needed to lead change. At the strategic planning retreat in 2009, the Executive Council and Regional Officers decided that we had to do something about this—not only because of our history of 12 inactive chapters when we didn’t increase the number of regions in parallel with growth in chapters, but even more so because we were no longer doing what we wanted to do and had done so well for so long—serve our chapters’ needs in a truly outstanding way.

The EC created four proposals to present to the 2010 Regional Conferences for feedback. Feedback from the Regional Conferences resulted in the EC’s approval of a modified plan for regional restructuring. One region suggested increasing the number of regional officers, instead of (continued on page 12)

CHANGE increasing the number of regions. Had that not already been proven unsuccessful in the past, it would have been an alternative worth exploring. Another region unanimously rejected regional restructuring.

It would have been easier for the Executive Council to divert our attention from this emotionally charged responsibility that our Constitution and Bylaws expects from the Executive Council and give the work back to the Grand Council. I think at times all of us worried about whether we were doing the right thing. Well, the evidence is pretty clear now. From 2009 to 2011, we chartered 10 chapters and reactivated two chapters, with no chapters going inactive.

The five regions served this Fraternity well for many years. Many Brothers hated to see the five regions go. It’s not that we feared change. It’s that we feared loss.

There are many ways to cope with that loss.

Some of us adapt well and are ready to

move on to the next challenge. It isn’t that easy for all of us. Instead, we look for barriers to change, advocate for them, and become encouraged when we can get others to see obstacles to change. Adaptive leadership calls for creative solutions and flexibility for overcoming obstacles. Many Brothers used the Grand Council in 2011 as an opportunity to celebrate our growth and new regions. The most remarkable change of all was how so many Brothers grew less afraid of change, learned the steps needed to make adjustments to new circumstances, and worked well together to keep leaping into a better future.

7. Can you tell us about a Brother who made an impact on your life?

The list of Brothers who have had a positive impact on my life and the stories surrounding those memories would fill an entire book. I can say that I am a phar-

macist today because there were Brothers who believed in me, and I didn’t have the heart to let them down.

8. What Fraternity accomplishment are you most proud of?

I am most proud of designing and leading the execution of a strategic planning retreat that utilized the talents of the Executive Council as each of them led a variety of planning activities. These activities engaged all of the National and Regional Officers present and ultimately led to the identification and prioritization of five achievable goals. These goals served as a compass for dedicating our human and financial resources over the following two years.

(Ralph Saroyan interview, continued from page 9) 3. What was going on in the world at the time you were Grand President?

I was Grand President from 1981–89. Following my election, I was dubbed “Grand Poobah” by my Alpha Psi Brothers and particularly Grand Past VP for Collegiate Affairs, Max Polinsky, because of the popular TV show The Flintstones. This is the only nickname that has survived to this day. My presidency of Phi Delta Chi happened to coincide with that of President Ronald Reagan, who I personally admired as one of best U.S. Presidents in my lifetime. As you can imagine, I was raised in a fairly conservative Armenian family.

4. What were the top issues facing the Fraternity at the time?

The first year of my presidency followed the only two Grand Councils separated by three years (Atlanta 1975, Lake Tahoe, 1978, to Pittsburgh 1981), so I was determined to bring us back to the two year cycle. Also during my presidency, our executive director resigned one year before our Fraternity’s 100th Anniversary; a Grand Editor completely withdrew from his office, leaving us with no Communicators, and we had a fiscal crisis. These were daunting times for our Fraternity; however, the Grand Officers pulled together, with L Michael Posey taking over the tasks of ED and Editor, the other Vice Presidents took on more of the responsibilities formerly performed by the ED. We also celebrated the 100 th Anniversary in Ann Arbor in late October of 1983, where we placed a Centennial bronze plaque in the foyer of the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy. The Fraternity continued to grow through the active participation of the Grand Officers and, by 1989 at the Monterey Grand Council, we were on solid footing both organizationally and financially.

5. How many chapters were there when you were GP? There was little growth of the Fraternity during my 8 years as Grand President primarily due to a static level of Pharmacy school openings and due to our Fraternity’s weak financial status. Only two new chapters were activated, Beta Iota (Oct. 1982) at Oregon State University, and Beta Kappa (March 1988 ) at Campbell University. We reactivated our Alpha Chapter in September 1984 and Alpha Lambda in March of 1983.

6. What was the biggest challenge that you faced?

My biggest challenge was addressing the weak financial condition in 1982 and the loss of our Executive Director and VP of Communications right before our Centennial Grand Council.

7. Can you tell us a memorable story about a Brother who made an impact on your life?

My most impactful Brother, whom I continue to consider my mentor even though he is no longer living, was my Dean, Ivan W. (Cy) Rowland, the only other person to serve as Grand President for four terms, eight years. Past Grand VP Collegiate; Max Polinsky was also a mentor of mine. Two other contemporaries of mine who had a huge impact on my presidency were John Grabenstein and Michael Posey. I would be remiss if I didn’t say that every Brother I ever met had an impact on my life.

8. What Fraternity accomplishment are you most proud of?

Teaching the Brothers to Hug.

Dr. Jacob Holler

Nancy Gilbride

Jacob Holler graduated from the University of Michigan in 2010. After obtaining his PharmD, Dr. Holler completed a combined two-year Health System Pharmacy Administration Masters Program residency at the University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill. This program allowed him to polish his clinical skills as a general pharmacy practice resident during the first year, then obtain financial, operational, and clinical management experience during the second year, while obtaining a master’s degree. In 2012, he accepted a position at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit as a pharmacy manager. His practice purview includes anti-coagulation, intensive care, maternal child health, and surgical services.

Dr. Holler’s commitment to the field of pharmacy administration is evident. He has worked to optimize the workflow and expand the functions of a variety of pharmacy services, most notably in a pharmacydirected anti-coagulation service for Henry Ford Hospital and implementation of new electronic health record software within his health system. This work has helped to both increase the efficiency of pharmacy services and improve patients’ quality of care. Dr. Holler is quite cognizant of the considerable skills that pharmacists can employ and the multitude of ways in which we can affect and improve the lives of our patients. When asked how he would like to see the practice of pharmacy evolve, Dr. Holler spoke of his desire to see pharmacists expand into additional unique roles, which employ their specialized knowledge to accomplish tasks that other healthcare providers are unable to achieve. While pharmacists will always serve as vigilant sentinels of safe and appropriate medication distribution, we owe it to our patients to use every skill in our repertoire to improve their health outcomes and quality of life.

The Alpha Chapter Brothers believe Jacob Holler demonstrates both the clinical expertise and professional advocacy that typify the best of pharmacy professionals. We are proud to call him an Alpha Brother and name him our Distinguished Alumnus for the year.

Nancy Gilbride began her career advising employers on how to structure their pharmacy benefits. As her career in the PBM field progressed, she managed teams of clinicians who delivered consultation, education, and change implementation to multiple payor types—employers, government plans, union groups, and HMOs, to name a few. Nancy continually took on larger responsibilities, eventually managing programs that spanned large state and city government plans, including a carve out Medicaid program for the State of Georgia. Around this time, ExpressScripts was awarded the Department of Defense contract and Nancy was selected to manage this program. Express Scripts has maintained the contract with the Department of Defense for nearly 10 years now, serving the 9.7 million active duty and retired service members and their families, and processes more than 115 million adjusted claims per year. While her initial dream may have been more in line with direct patient care, Nancy felt passionate about being able to serve U.S. Service members. Her passion has resulted in Consumer Reports naming the TRICARE Pharmacy Program the #1 PBM in the country in May of 2011 based on overall experience. In addition, APhA recently acknowledged the TRICARE Pharmacy Program with a Vaccination Award—the special immunization champion award. This award recognizes extraordinary contributions toward increasing the rates of vaccinations in communities. Express Scripts implemented the DoD policy by contracting a network of more than 45,000 pharmacies to participate.

They have educated the pharmacies and implemented system changes to process more than 573,000 vaccines to date.

Epsilon Matthew Grissinger Matthew Grissinger has been a key alumnus in Epsilon’s refounding and chartering in 2009.

Grissinger has also been active in chapter-hosted alumni activities, especially presenting at our Phi Delta Chi Careers in Pharmacy Week alumni speaker events. Besides aiding and supporting our chapter, he is also highly involved in

advancement of the pharmacy profession.

Grissinger is currently the Director of Error Reporting Programs at the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, as well Clinical Analyst and Manager of Medication Safety Analysis at the PA Patient Safety Authority. He is also an adjunct assistant professor, Department of Pharmacy Practice, at Temple University.

He has given numerous speeches on medication safety and errors, as well as published and contributed to editing several books and publications on the topic. Grissinger has served as a home-care and long-term care surveyor and on the United States Pharmacopeia’s Safe Medication Use Expert Committee from 2005–2010. Lastly, he is involved as a Peer Editorial Board member of the Pharmacy Learning Network (PLN).

Epsilon Chapter thanks Grissinger for all his service to our chapter and Fraternity, as well as the pharmacy profession; he is truly a distinguished alumnus.

Zeta Ivan Mok We are proud to recognize Dr. Ivan Mok, a UCSF alumnus and current PGY1 resident at San Francisco General Hospital, who has been very active in our chapter. Ivan has attended many of our events, including the alumni mixer, big bro revealing, Thanksgiving dinner, and several rush events. We are especially thankful for his wisdom on surviving through the rigors of pharmacy school. We are also thankful for his positive reflections shared during his experience in PDC. Dr Ivan Mok exemplifies the PDC spirit. His signature smile is famous—you will never see him without it!

Eta Minh T. Do Dr. Minh “Daddy” Do has been a huge asset to Eta Chapter, MCPHS University, and our profession.

During his attendance at MCPHS University, Dr. Do has received many awards and achievements: among others, he was awarded the Phi Delta Chi—Howard L. Reed Scholarship, awarded to a collegiate who has the highest GPA in his class, along www.phideltachi.org

with being a well-rounded brother, both in and out of class. Upon graduation, Dr. Do began working at CVS/pharmacy, where he immediately became the Team Leader at his store. Dr. Do also became a preceptor, where his primary focus was to train and develop pharmacy interns. He has accepted students from MCPHS University, Northeastern University, University of Georgia, and Virginia Commonwealth University. Within a few years, Dr. Minh Do was awarded: the Pharmacy intern preceptor award by CVS/pharmacy in recognition of his outstanding performance in the development of future pharmacists. He was also awarded preceptor of the year in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the educational development of future pharmacists by demonstrating high standards of professionalism, ethics, and clinical practice by MCPHS University in 2007.

Not only does Dr. Do continue to show interest in teaching his interns, he is also advancing the field of pharmacy in a multitude of ways. From 2007–2010, Minh became a Regional Support Pharmacist, where he helped fill pharmacist shifts, remodel stores, and train staff in the Boston district. In 2010, Minh was granted the Outstanding Pharmacy Spokesperson Award for being a valuable healthcare resource to the Boston community. If members of the media, such as the Boston Globe, Fox 25, or other request to speak with a pharmacist, CVS looks to Minh to represent them. He was featured on a news radio show in 2009 discussing Medicare Part D and also in a Boston Globe article responding to questions about the pharmacy profession. Dr. Do was also featured on CNBC to talk about diabetes for dLife, which can be found on YouTube. Minh and the host, Benno, walked the aisles of CVS/pharmacy discussing the newly-diagnosed shopping list for people living with diabetes and their caregivers. Products include meters, test strips, vitamins, sugar-free pain medications, and glucose replacement. Along with being the Team Leader at his store near Fenway, Minh has been CVS/pharmacy’s Regional Flu Expert since September 2012.

Being the Regional Flu Expert encompasses training current and new pharmacists to become licensed immunizers and coordinating off-site flu clinics for Area 1, Region 2.

His work ethic and passion for pharmacy motivate those around him and serve as an example for those who aspire to be a "Leader in pharmacy."

Dr. Pereira has been instrumental in helping the Theta Chapter set up and properly run one of our newest initatives, the Phillip’s Neighborhood Clinic Influenze Vaccination initiative. Dr. Pereira has been a wealth of information and guidence on how to handle difficult situations. We are eternally grateful for his assistance and his ability to quickly problem-solve any issues that may come up.

Dr. Pereira graduated with a PharmD from the University of Minnesota after receiving his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He completed a PGY1 residency in Pharmacy Practice at the Mayo Medical Center in Rochester, Minn. Dr. Pereria then went on to complete a PGY2 residency in Primary Care at the University of Washington/Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Wash.

Dr. Pereira’s current practice is located at Smiley’s Clinic in Minneapolis, a family medicine clinic that is part of the University’s residency training program. Working at Smiley’s Clinic allows Dr. Pereira to serve patients from diverse cultures which has recently included a large number of Somali and other East African immigrants. Dr. Pereira works with an intraprofessional care team that is dedicated to providing excellent care for those under-represented in society and vulnerable to medical complications.

Dr. Pereira also works with a care team to provide QUIT PLAN services at Smiley’s.

QUITPLAN is a face-to-face smoking cessation program that is supported by ClearWay Minnesota.

Brother Pereira is the course director for PHAR 6177-Patient Assessment. This course prepares students for pharmacy practice and direct patient contact. The course introduces skills that prepare students for assessing and evaluating patients’ health through training and simulations. Additionally, Dr. Pereira enjoys training pharmacy students and residents at Smiley’s Clinic. Smiley’s is an established five-week Advanced Pharmaceutical Practice Experience for PharmD candidates.

Residents complete year one of their twoyear Leadership Residency at the clinic, where they apply evidenced-based medicine to patients with limited resources as well as those with complicated medical histories.

Ankur has continued to support our undergraduate chapter through the years in many ways. He attends initiation annually in order to help teach our pledge classes more about the Brotherhood. Last year, he also volunteered his time to help teach first year Brothers a particularly tough section of Medicinal Chemistry. This year, he, along with alumnus Katie Ferguson, donated hundreds of dollars worth of canned goods to help support our Can Castle fundraiser.

Lambda Tira Meyers This year, the Lambda Brothers unanimously selected Tira Meyers as our Distinguished Alumnus. Tira is a 2012 University of Texas College of Pharmacy graduate and a current PhD student in the Division of Pharmacology. Tira has gone above and beyond in order to provide support to our chapter over the past couple of years, and she has certainly distinguished herself as a friendly face to our collegiate Brothers. She has provided stipends for Brothers to attend Grand Council and the 2014 Southcentral Regional Conference. She has also come to several of our events, and thus has shown our Brothers how important alumni involvement is after graduation. Tira has not only come to our local events, but she has also attended every national and regional conference this year.

She is a true inspiration of how we should stay involved at not only the chapter level, but the Regional and National levels as well.

Tira is always humble in her donation of both her time and money and she reminds us to pay it forward once we graduate.

Mu Clyde Cressler Clyde Cressler is a Mu Chapter alumnus (Class of ’69) who has distinguished himself as a leader in the field of pharmacy. Soon after graduating, Clyde partnered with his fatherin-law to acquire multiple pharmacies in Pennslyvania and Ohio. In 1978 he converted a pharmacy to the first closed-door pharmacy, which sold nursing home medical supplies. After 20 years of building and acquiring pharmacies, in 1999, Brother Cressler formed Care Capital Management as a single management division for all operations. After an additional 15 years of managing and opening successful and pro-

ductive pharmacies, in 2013, Brother Cressler was awarded Franchisee of the Year by the Medicine Shoppe. The Care Capital management team now operates 16 Medicine Shoppe pharmacies in Pennslyvania and New York. They also provide a variety of specialized packaging, long-term care, and institutional services, while also working with 340B clinics, National PACE-LIFE programs, and provide support to patients living with HIV. We often say that Phi Delta Chi builds “leaders in pharmacy.” We are proud to say that Clyde Cressler is a Mu Chapter alumnus, as he sets a strong example of what a true leader in pharmacy may accomplish.

Omicron Mike Voelker This year, the alumni association of the Omicron Chapter selected Brother Mike Voelker as our Distinguished Alumnus. As a student, Mike played an integral role in the Omicron Chapter history by serving as Worthy Chief Counselor of the Fraternity during the 1970s. After graduation, he continued to be a leader by joining the Board of Directors for the Alumni Association.

This year, the Alumni Association has chosen to honor him, because he has been instrumental in bringing the Alumni Association and Omicron Chapter together over the years. After the USC School of Pharmacy relocated to its current campus, and following a tragic fire that destroyed the Phi Delta Chi house, the Chapter faced a great divide in opinion about its financial future. During this time period, Mike exercised his great leadership skills to bridge the divide between members of the Alumni Association and the chapter to help make the Fraternity what it has become today. Mike convinced the Alumni Association to retain the proceeds from the lost chapter house to help fund Phi Delta Chi activities for the active chapter, such as leadership retreats, Grand Council visits, and end-of-the-year banquets. By retaining these funds, Mike gave alumni a way to come together and still be involved in Phi Delta Chi events each year. Mike has been credited as one of the reasons the Omicron Chapter has such a strong alumni presence.

ers through his experience in management at Safeway, Inc. Mike is a USC football fan and is frequently seen talking with students at tailgating events. Brothers agree that he embodies the Fraternity motto and is “someone you can call anytime and he will be there for you.” Through Mike’s actions, many other Phi Delta Chi Brothers have been given the opportunity to learn and practice their own leadership skills in pharmacy.

Rho Andrea Bourque Andrea has been shown to be a great example of an alumni Brother through her work as a pharmacist, continued involvement in the Fraternity, and her involvement as an alumnus in our chapter. She, in coordination with our advisors, initiated the Rho Brotherhood Scholarship this year, our first scholarship dedicated solely to Brothers. She also serves as the Regional Director of Alumni Affairs for the Southcentral Region, and always makes an effort to attend any event she can. We admire her for all that she does!

Sigma Erin Perling During her time as an active Brother, Erin Perling served as WKRS, and during her P4 year, was elected as the Mountain Regional Correspondent. During her year as Regional Correspondent, all chapters received 100% on the achievement award program and no chapters were at the bottom of the rankings.

One unique accomplishment Erin took part in was the creation of the Buffalo Wild Wings Competition, where the chapter earned more than $3,000. The event is still held annually. Erin attended the Grand Council in Buffalo, N.Y., as well as the Leadership Development Series, and brought back important leadership skills and ideas to help our chapter’s growth. Erin and the Mountain Regional Team created a West Coast retreat entitled “Big Blu,” which took place in Lake Tahoe, Nev. Erin recently completed a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency with Yale-New Haven Hospital and is hopes to practice in an acute care or ambulatory setting. A project that Erin worked on this past year was the implementation of pharmacist-drive admission medication reconciliation and evaluating the impact that this has on the 30-day heart failure readmission rate at the hospital. Erin submitted an abstract for her project to the Yale-New Haven Health System, Joseph A. Zaccagnino Patient Safety and Clinical Quality Conference, and presented a poster on this project at the conference in May. Erin plans to keep an active role in as an alumnus both in the region where she ends up residing and with Sigma Chapter (she also hopes to return to Denver one day!)

Tau Karl Disque After graduating from Purdue, Karl served as a pharmacist for a year, then started medical school. Anesthesia was such a natural progression from pharmacy that he felt it fit his personality perfectly. He says “It is simply pharmacy for those with ADHD!” As a staff anesthesiologist, Karl completed BLS, ACLS, and PALS Re-Certification many times through various online services and had been constantly disappointed with the curriculum. So, he and a physician friend decided to create a more streamline, user-friendly, and up-to-date alternative. Rather than continue the disappointing search for what they and other healthcare providers needed, they created NHCPS (www.nhcps.com) to reflect what physicians and all healthcare professionals value and want in a service. NHCPS provides its users the opportunity to contribute to saving the lives of those they come into contact with and even those they will never meet. This is possible, as all the proceeds from NHCPS go to fund the Disque Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the underserved on how to save lives. Through his efforts with the Foundation, Karl found that lower quality healthcare for the underserved is more likely due to lack of access to proper diagnostic and treatment training. The Disque Foundation was formed in an effort to deliver transferable training content, provide scholarships for education, application, and immersion. The goal is not only to personally train and treat individuals, but primarily to train those in the underserved community to train and treat others in their community. By focusing on technophilanthropy through social entrepreneurship, it continues to be an exciting experience and he is inspired every day to expand the reach!

Phi Jennifer Tilleman We would like to recognize Jennifer Tilleman as Phi Chapter’s Distinguished Alumnus. She joined Phi Delta Chi, because she found others who shared similar interests in promoting and advancing the field of pharmacy. Jennifer graduated from Creighton in 2002 and became a faculty member at Creighton in 2003. As a faculty member, she works closely with her students and enjoys helping them develop into competent future pharmacists. Her recent accomplishments include receiving the Phi Lambda Sigma Excellence in Leadership award and accepting the position of President-Elect for the Nebraska Pharmacists Association. In her free time, she watches sporting events, particularly baseball, and spends time with friends and her dogs. Chi April Yarbrough April graduated from the Harrison School of Pharmacy in 2006. She is now the infectious disease and pharmacokinetic pharmacy specialist at Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham, Ala. She has held positions at Children’s, including liver transplant clinical pharmacist, pediatric hem/onc pharmacist, and since 2010, antimicrobial stewardship co-chair. She has been an active Brother of Phi Delta Chi since her initiation in 2001 and recently invited current Brothers to a luncheon to foster ideas on how to improve our chapter. April also served as both a facilitator and delegate at the most recent regional conference.

Psi Anthony Pudlo Anthony Pudlo, or Pudlo, as he is known to the chapter, is a 2007 graduate with numerous professional accomplishments on his resume, as well as a history of continued involvement with Phi Delta Chi. Pudlo has previously received awards for his engagement in the profession and passion for preceptorship, including the 2011 Drake University Young Alumni Achievement Award and the 2011 NACDS Community Pharmacy Preceptor of the Year Award. Currently, Pudlo serves as the Iowa Pharmacy Association’s vice president of professional affairs and acts as a liaison to pharmacists, student pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians across the various state agencies in Iowa. Pudlo serves as an exceptional role-model and mentor to the Brothers of Phi Delta Chi, as he reminds us of the importance of advocating for the profession and association involvement. Pudlo is also a familiar face around the chapter, as he remains involved with undergraduate Brothers, at chapter events, and is integral in our chapter’s alumni affairs.

Omega Natalie Tate The Omega Chapter has been privileged to foster so many outstanding alumni throughout the years, hence choosing one to recognize is never an easy task. Natalie Tate received her PharmD in 2002 and then her MBA in 2012 from the University of Chattanooga, which she earned while working.

and was named the Regional Director of BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee in 2007, only five years after she graduated from pharmacy school. It was during her time serving as the director that she went back to school for three years to earn her MBA. In 2012, Dr. Tate was promoted to corporate pharmacy affairs director for BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee. In April 2013, she was hired as the associate director of Health Systems and Outcomes Research for BristolMyers Squibb, where she still works today.

Dr. Tate is an extremely driven Brother. She has blazed through a career path different from the normal pharmacy occupation. In addition to her pharmacy career, she is also involved in local organizations. She has been an active member of the Chattanooga Area Pharmacists Society (CAPS) for years, where she helps to promote the interconnectedness of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in the Chattanooga area and beyond.

Natalie Tate is an alumnus who has excelled at creating an alternative pharmacy career path. Her knowledge and abilities are such that large corporations trust her to oversee and maximize their health-related affairs. Her career path shows the unlimited potential of pharmacists to serve in all areas of healthcare. It is likely that her work will create opportunities for other pharmacists in the future.

Not only has David been recognized as the 2010 APhA Carl Emswiller Summer Intern in Association Management, he is also a member of Phi Lambda Sigma pharmacy leadership and Rho Chi honor societies. Currently, David is employed as the first Global Engagement Fellow in the Office of Entrepreneurial Development and Global Engagement. He assists faculty and students who pursue international initiatives and partnerships. He also works to develop new leads and opportunities for international collaborations and partnerships to advance the strategic objectives of the School. David is also advisor for the HELPRx (Advancing Global Healthcare, Education, Leadership, Practice, and Research in Pharmacy) Student Advisory Group within the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. He has spoken numerous times to organizations in our school about leadership and its challenges. He offers his time to advise students and is always willing to help where needed.

Although David graduated from the school’s doctor of pharmacy program in May 2013, he has continued to help the Alpha Gamma Chapter with much of his time and energy.

When David Steeb matriculated in the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in 2009, he noticed a lack of diversity in Greek professional pharmacy fraternities at school. With the help of Tony Mitchum, former Grand President of Phi Delta Chi and local alumnus of the Alpha Gamma Chapter, the Executive Director, Kenny Walkup, and Dean Robert Blouin and Dr. Wendy Cox, at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, steps were taken to reactivate Alpha Gamma Chapter. The Alpha Gamma Chapter was officially recolonized on January 20, 2010, and comprised 34 students, mostly from the Class of 2013. Not only was David instrumental in the re-colonization of Alpha Gamma, he is also known by every student at the Eshelman School of Pharmacy and to most students in APhAASP, due to his service to both APhA-ASP and pharmacy practice.

Serving as the past APhA-ASP National President and chair of the APhA-ASP Awards Standing Committee, David challenged every student to “Make Your Mark.” David definitely “made his mark” at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy due to his work to create

Dr. Lauren Marston Caldas became an Alpha Delta Brother in 2008 and graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2011. Dr. Caldas has always made an effort to be an active member in the pharmacy profession.

Beginning in pharmacy school, she joined many of the student organizations, including the Student Chapter of the Virginia Society of Health-systems Pharmacists, Student Association of Community Pharmacist, and Student Association of Consultant and Geriatric Pharmacists. Not only was she a member of these organizations, she often held leadership positions. She was the chair of the DiscoBowl committee for Alpha Delta and was president of SACP. After graduation, she completed a community residency at Kroger pharmacy in the Richmond area. While she was a resident, Dr. Caldas was a board member of the Community Pharmacy Residency Program Advisory Board for APhA, as well as served as a member of the Student and New Practitioner subcommittee in VPhA. Upon completion of her residency, she was hired by Kroger as a pharmacist and was promoted in December 2012 to pharmacist-in-charge for her

store. Dr. Caldas continues to be an active leader in the community by holding leadership positions in VPhA. She is currently chairman of the Academy of New Practioners for the VPhA and served as a board member for many sections of the APhA. Although Dr. Caldas has only been practicing for a short time, she has been very active in the field of pharmacy, which has been recognized by the Virginia Pharmacists Association. In 2012, Dr. Caldas was awarded the Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award. This summer she will be honored with the Top 10 Under 10 Award, where VPhA recognizes pharmacists who have been out of pharmacy school for 10 years or less. As a way to continue making herself the best she can be, Dr. Caldas recently tested and became a Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacist.

Community service is also important, and Dr. Caldas spends one day a week volunteering at the Richmond Center for High Blood Pressure, a free clinic that serves the indigent population around Richmond. On top of that, she guest lectures for the VCU School of Pharmacy. This year she has also spoken at an information session hosted by Alpha Delta to tell students what it is like to be a community pharmacist. These last couple of years have also been very exciting for Dr. Caldas. On March 1, 2013, she and her husband welcomed their first son, Joseph Edward Caldas. She has also completed 5 halfmarathons and 2 full Richmond marathons.

Dr. Caldas is looking forward to competing in an Ironman in the future, so she is training by doing triathlons.

Alpha Epsilon T. Kristopher Harrell “Let us each honor PHI DELTA CHI.” Dr. Harrell honors the Fraternity by living up to the ideals set forth by the Founders. “Let us do good, because it is a pleasure.” Dr. Harrell gives so much of his time, not only to the students of the school of pharmacy, but to the community in general. “Let us practice the virtues and war against vice.” He serves as an outstanding role model for the members of Alpha Epsilon Chapter, as well as pharmacy students in general. His kind and patient manner is greatly appreciated during the hectic stress that can be associated with the day-to-day struggles of pharmacy school. He serves as the PEP director for our school and aids students in the rotation decision process. “Let us keep burning the light of wisdom.” Dr. Harrell is a fountain of knowledge and experience. He is such a valuable part of the school of pharmacy and its ability to operate. “Let us respect the aged and instruct the young.” Dr. Harrell is a very 18

respectful and respected member of the faculty at the University of Mississippi, School of Pharmacy. He instructs students throughout the year on how to best optimize their time and the opportunities provided to us by our rotations. “Let us cherish family.” Family is so much more than who one is related to. Dr. Harrell values family in the sense that he values people. You can speak to Dr. Harrell about your home town or a friend and there is a good chance he has been there or knows who you are talking about. “Let us be true Brothers.” Dr. Harrell is always excited to meet a Brother of Phi Delta Chi. He is a great person and is always willing to help students with the transition between our campuses and with planning rotations. “Let us refrain from excess.” Dr. Harrell emphasizes above all else having the perfect balance of PEP, which is an acronym for professionalism, enthusiasm, and positivity. The only thing Dr. Harrell does in excess is provide enthusiasm and encouragement to his students. “Let us be just.” Dr. Harrell is just and willing to work with students. He understands that everyone has different circumstances, so he works with each student individually to ensure that each student is doing their best to promote the profession of pharmacy. “Let us give our best efforts to our Brothers.” Dr. Harrell is a great leader and provides the Brothers of Alpha Epsilon with knowledge and guidance. He is a valuable assest to our chapter and we are proud to have him as a Brother of Phi Delta Chi.

Alpha Zeta Josh Gehrke This year our chapter is pleased to nominate Joshua Gehrke. Gehrke (as we fondly call him) has exemplified the “Brothers for Life” motto through his charity, involvement, and motivation. He is one of our most active alumni and is frequently present at our service projects, retreats, and brotherhood events. His donations have helped pay for our Brothers’ attendance at both regional and national conferences and also for upkeep on our chapter house. This year, we were asked to update our chapter history.

Gehrke was generous enough to give up some of his time to help us accomplish the task. He is always willing to offer advice and lend a helping hand to the Alpha Zeta Brothers. His passion for the Brotherhood and positive attitude is infectious and much appreciated. Over the past couple of years, we have been trying to rebuild our chapter and would not be where we are today without Gehrke.

Alpha Theta Christopher Gardiner Chris Gardiner truly embodies the ideals of Phi Delta Chi in his professional career as a pharmacist for Wegmans. Chris joined the well-known supermarket chain after graduating from Albany College of Pharmacy and completing a community pharmacy residency at the University of Maryland. In the years since joining the company, Chris has gained a reputation as a compassionate individual who truly cares about his patients. Along with caring for his patients, Chris also cares deeply about his fellow Wegmans employees. While working at his store in Liverpool, N.Y. Chris developed a pharmacist-managed program for employees with hypertension. In addition to helping to decrease the employee’s risk of cardiovascular disease, this program also had the goal to reduce sick days and expensive hospitalizations that could be easily avoided. Chris Gardiner’s program was very successful in its preliminary trial. Through word of mouth, in-store announcements, and advertisements, 732 employees were screened and 330 were found to be at risk. Of those found to be at risk, 102 signed up for counseling sessions that provided education and support aimed at helping patients reach their blood pressure goals. This program led to an overall 19-point reduction in systolic blood pressure in the employees who signed up for the counseling sessions. The success of the program in Chris’s store led to the expansion of it to other Wegmans locations in Syracuse, and eventually to the entire company.

Today, Chris Gardiner’s employee hypertension program has morphed into the company-wide “Know Your Blood Pressure” campaign. Of Wegmans’ eligible employees, 90% have been screened by this program and roughly 4,000 have been identified as having hypertension and have been enrolled in the pharmacist-run counseling sessions. In an effort to show the success of the program, a report was coauthored by Brian Pompo, the Coordinator of Wellness and Clinical Services, and James DiNicolantonio, PharmD, which reported cumulative reductions of 17 point systolic and 6 point diastolic blood pressure levels among 1,119 employees who were identified as having hypertension.

The program’s success would not have been possible without the empathetic initiative that Brother Gardiner displayed when beginning the program and continues to display with his patients. Through the ideals instilled in Chris as an undergraduate of Alpha Theta Chapter, he has learned that the best way to encourage people is to prove www.phideltachi.org

to them that you genuinely care about their well-being. Chris’s belief in “accountability through caring” has been adopted by Wegmans as the standard for the customer interactions they seek to encourage.

Chris Gardiner’s idea to start an employee hypertension program has had a lasting impact on the Wegmans community. The success of the blood pressure program has sparked Wegmans to initiate other pharmacist-led clinical programs, such as a cardiovascular risk-reduction initiative and a diabetes management initiative. Chris Gardiner’s program has opened to door for Wegmans pharmacists to act more in the role of a clinical specialist while still maintaining the role of a community pharmacist.

Alpha Iota Rejena Azad While Alpha Iota has a number of alumni who are worthy of the honor of Distinguished Alumnus, Brother Rejena Azad stands out as a wonderful candidate and role model for our profession. Rejena has remained connected to fellow alumni and to the college chapter since graduation, and she continues to support Alpha Iota's projects and endeavors. Professionally, she completed a PGY1 residency at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia, S.C., and is currently wrapping up a PGY2 at Grady Health System in Atlanta, Ga. Her primary focus at Grady is Internal Medicine, and she aspires to work in academia or as a clinical pharmacist in an academic medical center. She is off to a great start, having already taught as a guest lecturer in the third year pharmacotherapy course at the University of Georgia. Aside from her academic and professional accomplishments, Rejena has continued to display commitment to Phi Delta Chi by working with Southeastern Regional Director of Collegiate Affairs Kyle Wheatley (Gamma Zeta), and Brother Duc Luc (Alpha Rho) to nurture the colony chapter Beta Theta for reactivation at the University of South Carolina.

Alpha Kappa Robert “Bob” Davis Robert E. (Bob) Davis ’74–’75 is Kennedy Professor at the Kennedy Pharmacy Innovation Center (KPIC) of the South Carolina College of Pharmacy (SCCP).

Dr. Davis’ appointment at the SCCP marks a return to the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), where he earned B.S. and PharmD degrees; it is also a return to SCCP’s other founding institution the University of South Carolina (USC), as he has served as clinical assistant professor at both MUSC and USC www.phideltachi.org

from 1977–86. He joined the SCCP last year from SXC Health, Inc., a $4 billion pharmacy benefit management company at which he was vice president of specialty business development for the $400 million specialty division.

A natural tactician, strategic thinker, and educator, Dr. Davis has compiled an admirable business history. After graduating, he founded a medical/pharmacy group practice, which grew into a multi-million dollar success. He left the business a decade later to join the $5 billion wholesale drug company Foxmeyer Corporation, where he served as executive vice president and general manager of the Health Mart Inc. division; CEO and president of the ScripCard Enterprises, Inc. division; and senior vice president of business development for the corporation. In 1996–97, he directed the transition of the ScripCard division to ShopKo/ProVantage before heading up business development divisions at multibillion corporations VHA, Inc., NMHC, Inc., and SXC Health, Inc. Brother Davis has served as president of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), chairman of the Concept Pharmacy Demonstration Project, and president of the SCPhA. He also has been recognized by the APhA with the Arnold and Marie Schwartz Award, which honors pharmacy practice innovation, and is an APhA Fellow.

Dr. Davis is currently on faculty at the USC campus and serves as the Chapter Advisor to the newly reactivated Beta Theta Chapter.

Alpha Lambda Sabina Alikhanov Since Sabina Alikhanov joined Phi Delta Chi in her P1 year, she quickly became a very involved Brother. She held offices in Phi Delta Chi as the WC her P2 year and WCC her P3 year. She used her leadership skills to motivate other Alpha Lambdas to get involved. Wellrounded Brothers are always a great asset to a chapter, and Sabina represented this well as her leadership skills extended far beyond Phi Delta Chi. As a student, Sabina was actively involved in Pharmacy Student Government, CSHP, as well as APhA-ASP. Sabina was a regional officer in APhA-ASP and the Region 1 midyear regional meeting coordinator, which meant she coordinated, budgeted, and hosted MRM when it came to Hartford, CT in 2009. These leadership roles and accomplishments earned Sabina a spot in Phi Lambda Sigma, where Sabina mentored students and served as chapter historian. Her discipline with her schoolwork combined with her involvement throughout

pharmacy school made Sabina a wonderful candidate for graduation in 2011 when she earned her PharmD. Sabina began working at Walgreens Pharmacy her P1 year and hasn’t looked back since. Moving from intern, to floating pharmacist, to staff pharmacist at her current store in West Hartford, Conn, Sabina has the charisma and knowledge that makes for a great community pharmacist. In addition to her usual duties as a staff pharmacist, Sabina runs several MTM sessions each month at her store and has recently completed her MTM Diabetes Certification. Sabina continues to be involved in APhA and Phi Delta Chi as a pharmacist. As an alumni, Sabina continues to build connections and support her Alpha Lambda Brothers. She frequently attends our monthly chapter dinners, and hosts Brothers at her store for outreach activities. Most recently our chapter created an informational poster to educate people on vaccinations. Many of Sabina’s patients at Walgreens appreciated learning about everything from flu shots to the Zostavax. Sabina also provided invaluable insight and guidance that was instrumental in planning and executing a successful regional conference this past year. Sabina represented as the alumni delegate during the 2014 Northeast Regional Conference.

This wasn’t the first time Sabina also served as the chapter, as she was one of the first Alpha Lambda Brothers to attend a regional meeting when she served as delegate her P2 year when regionals were in Baltimore, Md. She went on to attend Grand Council in Phoenix, Ariz. in 2009 and brought back lots of motivation and inspiration to our chapter.

Sabina’s positive experience at these larger conferences encouraged other Brothers, so that when the 2010 regionals came around to Boston, we had several Brothers in attendance, including Sabina, who was the WCC at that time.

Alpha Mu Kem P. Krueger, Pharm.D., Ph.D. Dr. Kem P. Krueger has been involved in the Alpha Mu Chapter since 2005, when he came to the University of Wyoming.

Brother Krueger received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1993. He then completed a general pharmacy practice residency at the Kansas City Veterans Administration Medical Center. After his residency, Dr. Krueger completed his Ph.D. in Pharmacoeconomics at the University of Arizona. Dr. Krueger has worked in hospital pharmacy, independent pharmacy, and chain pharmacy settings. In addition, he has worked for the United States Public

Health Service and for Marion Merrell Dow Inc. in the Health Economic and the Global Scientific Competitive Intelligence departments. Dr. Krueger was on faculty at Auburn University for seven years before joining the University of Wyoming. In his eight years at the University of Wyoming, he has conducted pharmacoeconomics and outcomes research, specifically measuring the clinical and economic impact of pharmacy services modeling disease interventions and validating disease state models. He is affiliated with several organizations, including the University of Wyoming Health Economic Policy Center, APhA, the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research, and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. Dr. Krueger is now the associate dean of research and outcomes at the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy. Dr. Krueger originally joined Phi Delta Chi while pursuing his PharmD degree at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Since joining the University of Wyoming, he and his wife, the Alpha Mu Chapter Advisor, have been actively involved with the activities of Alpha Mu. Recently, Dr. Krueger worked with the chapter’s Community Service Committee to implement new ideas for ways to increase the chapter’s involvement within the community. His participation was instrumental in the chapter attaining its outreach goals for the year. He has helped with several pledge class initiations, attended formal meetings, and has helped with rush during his time at the University of Wyoming. Dr. Krueger has been involved in many organizations and continues to be very active in the pharmacy community. Clearly, Dr. Krueger embodies the statement “Brothers for Life.”

Alpha Nu Jessica DiLeo Jessica DiLeo is a graduate of Alpha Nu Chapter at the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy in May 2013. She currently works at the Medication Management Center in Tucson, where she helps patients improve their management of chronic diseases through targeted phone counseling.

As part of the Medication Management Center’s team of pharmacists, interns, and technicians, Jessica helps to provide medication therapy management services to millions of Medicare beneficiaries nationwide. As a pharmacist at the Medication Management Center, Jessica helps to train and supervise more than 60 pharmacy students, approximately 30 of whom are Phi Delta Chi Brothers. Jessica reviews clinical documentation with students so they can learn the best ways to communicate with patients and other professionals. She focuses on the importance of complete and accurate SOAP notes and helps students learn how to document their 20

patient interactions properly. With her continuous support, student interns at the Medication Management Center learn the best way to counsel patients and document critical patient information. Jessica also helps interns learn many of the guidelines for managing chronic conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, and COPD. With her help, students learn the standards of care for many different disease states. Interns also learn how to assess a patient’s control of chronic disease. Jessica teaches interns the “red flags” of many diseases, and how to assess the severity of symptoms. She also helps them recognize when they are faced with a problem that is beyond their scope of knowledge. Her advice is especially useful for interns when they begin their IPPE and APPE rotations. Beyond her helpful advice and mentorship, Jessica always brings a positive attitude to the Management Center. She has made a huge impact on the 30 Brothers who work as interns at the Medication Management Center.

Alpha Omicron Sean Garrett Alterum Alterius Auxilio Eget. Each needs the help of the other. Undergraduate brothers know this phrase well, but what about alumni? Sean Garrett has been a key player to the Alpha Omicron Chapter.

Fresh out of Dallas, Texas, Sean pledged his P2 year. Sean had exemplified brotherhood from the beginning. He was a model student, earning Dean’s List every semester, and subsequently admission to Rho Chi Honor Society. In his P3 year, Sean undertook the role of Worthy Keeper of Records and Seals. He also attended events as a P3 such as Wing Ding and NERC. What Sean did as an underclassman may have sounded commonplace, but it is what he did as a P4 and onward that distinguished him from any other brother. Generally, when a Brother reaches their last year of pharmacy school, they are busy doing rotations. Whenever Sean had a chance to attend a formal meeting with the Brothers, Sean would make the effort. He continued to send old study guides he made in past years to younger Brothers and those he tutored.

After Sean graduated, he worked at two different community pharmacies. He moved into a house with two of our current P4 Brothers, Kayla Tran and Eucharia Onu. Last summer, he hosted a game night at his house, where Brothers played Taboo, Scattergories, and other games during a night of bonding. Sean has also continued to send out study guides to the P3s for their exams.

luck” text to Brothers. I always wonder, how did he know? Even while he is working two jobs, he still finds time to stay clued in and involved with his Brothers.

Sean still continues to attend chapter events, such as NERO, the Northeastern Regional Olympics, with all of us. This past January, he attended the Gatlinburg retreat.

Alpha Rho Bill Kitson Bill Kitson was chosen because of his accomplishments and contributions to the community and to the chapter. Upon graduation, he earned his 10-year pin with Walgreens and had advanced to the pharmacy manager position there. Bill gives back to the community by providing an educational service learning site to help train future pharmacists. He also assists as the pharamcist at a local retirement home.

Alpha Sigma Tommy Chiampas Tommy Chiampas is a 2011 graduate from the Alpha Sigma Chapter, where he has previously served as the WCC. He is currently working in the University of Illinois Health System as a clinical assistant professor/clinical pharmacist in the Infectious Diseases Department. Although his schedule is very time consuming, Tommy is often seen around the school and at many events held by the chapter.

Last year, Tommy was one of the panelists at the annual Alumni Round Table held in the spring semester. He is always there to assist with the needs of our chapter. Tommy plans to become one of the advisers for the Alpha Sigma Chapter. We are very excited to have his guidance and to see what he has in store for the future.

Alpha Tau Dr. Nancy Ordonez Brother Nancy Ordonez received her bachelor’s of science, magna cum laude in both biology and chemistry from Houston Baptist University in Houston, Texas.

She then attended the University of Houston College of Pharmacy, where she graduated with her doctorate of pharmacy in 1996. Since graduating, Dr. Ordonez has become instrumental in the development of new pharmacists at the University of Houston College of Pharmacy as both assistant dean of experiential programs and as a clinical associate professor. In her time at UHCOP, Dr. Ordonez has received the 2001 Phi Lambda Sigma Excellence in Leadership Award and the 2003 Rho Chi Teaching Excellence Award. UHCOP www.phideltachi.org

would not be the well-respected program that it is today without her hard work, especially in finding great rotation sites for students. She has worked very hard with all the hospitals in the Texas Medical Center, as well as the Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin areas, to provide as many learning sites as possible for students. As an UHCOP and Alpha Tau alumnus, she takes great pride in this program and the students who graduate from it. Our chapter is extremely lucky to have such an alumnus available to us. Dr. Ordonez has always been willing to support Alpha Tau with financial help, guidance, and advice whenever it is needed.

Dr. Odonez is always watching the job market around the country. She jokes that it is for herself, but we know it is mainly for her students, and she passes on the openings to whomever she thinks would be interested.

Her many connections make residencies and first jobs possible for many of her students.

Her office door is always open for students to discuss getting through Therapeutics, to finding the right residency, or in finding a job. She writes countless numbers of recommendation letters for students every year. Dr. Ordonez shows her fairness by treating students in all fraternities the same, but I know she has a special place in her heart for all Phi Delta Chi Brothers.

Dr. Ordonez has recently made it a goal to see every student in the P3 class before APPE rotations start, in an attempt to optimize the students’ schedules and help them establish goals for the upcoming year.

Alpha Phi Ernest Boyd Dr. Ernest Boyd was initiated into the Alpha Phi Chapter in 1971. He earned his B.S. in pharmacy from Butler University in 1975, followed in 1983 by an MBA from Indiana University. Dr. Boyd has served the pharmacy profession in a myriad of avenues since obtaining his professional degrees. In Indiana, he served as assistant chief pharmacist of a health center, as well as assistant executive director of the Indiana Pharmacists Association. He then moved to Ohio, where his involvement only grew: a pharmacy retail store manager, a hospital staff pharmacist, guest lecturerer at a variety of colleges, and currently executive director of the Ohio Pharmacists Association (since 1988). For his countless hours of advocacy and leadership, Dr. Boyd has also received many honors, including the Charles M. West Distinguished American Award from NCPA in 2012.

Alpha Psi Marcus Ravnan Dr. Marcus Ravnan has been the Chapter Advisor for Alpha Psi since 2009. In his five years as Advisor, he has provided critical analysis of the chapter to the actives.

Although he is extremely busy, he is around for any Brother when they need him. When Dr. Ravnan was still an undergraduate, he served as Worthy Chief Counselor during a time when the chapter was not as stable as it is now. He had to deal with many sensitive issues. It is possible that because of this previous experience, he seems to know exactly what to do when the chapter is in a bind.

Whether an active is scared about failing a class or the chapter is having problems with the school, Dr. Ravnan always knows just what to say. Our WKF, Heidi Chung, found herself in a bind when the school thought that the chapter owed the school $3,000 based on an account that had been inactive since 2009. Dr. Ravnan guided Heidi through the process to clear the chapter’s name. Dr. Ravnan has shown true AAAE and we can trust that he will always be a Brother for Life.

Alpha Omega Sean O’Brien Sean O’Brien has proven to be a very active and reliable alumnus to our chapter. He still lives and works in Weatherford, Okla. He regularly attends meetings, was present at our pledge induction and initiation, as well as attended our Regional Conference.

Milowicki has additionally proven to be an invaluable resource to Brothers by offering advice on rotations, giving tips on networking, and offering guidance toward making Beta Gamma the best chapter it can be. Dr. Milowicki is a prime example of the phrase “Brothers for Life.”

Despite the distance he has to travel to get to the chapter, he is always willing to make the trip to better the chapter and help us grow.

Beta Delta Mitch Graumenz Dr. Mitch Graumenz has been the most active alumnus this year by attending the most professional and Fraternity events of all the alumni. This year, we had Dr. Graumenz speak at the annual dinner on what it means to be a Brother in Phi Delta Chi. During this speech, he moved many potential new pledges to make a comittment to Phi Delta Chi, and this is evident in our recent surge of active Brothers. Our continued growth as a chapter would not be possible without the dedication of Dr. Graumenz. He works at a prestigious compounding pharmacy in the Saint Louis area, and excells at his job.

Beta Beta Michael Mohundro Dr. Michael Mohundro is an alumnus of the Beta Beta Chapter. Since his graduation, Dr. Mohundro has remained active throughout his pharmacy career and within Phi Delta Chi. Our Worthy Alumni Liaison keeps in continuous contact with him throughout the school year. He is now employed as the director of pharmacy at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, La. He also serves as the Treasurer of Phi Delta Chi.

Beta Gamma Jesse R. Milowicki We have chosen to recognize Dr. Milowicki due to his continuing involvement and encouragement of the current chapter.

After spending a year in Arizona working for CVS, Brother Milowicki recently moved back to the East Coast and started working for Custer Pharmacy in Cadiz, Ohio. Although he lives almost an hour away, Dr. Milowicki

Lenny Shats Dr. Lenny Shats started off his career as a staff pharmacist at Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island, N.Y. With each passing year, Lenny found himself quickly climbing the ladder of success and is now the assistant director and clinical coordinator in that Department of Pharmacy. In the midst of the progression and success of his own career, Lenny betters the education of pharmacy students in various aspects of a profession that he holds so dear, through his position as a preceptor. Over the past year alone, he has worked diligently to build strong relationships with multiple pharmacy schools, including Long Island University, Touro College of Pharmacy, and D’Youville College of Pharmacy. Through his hard work and persistent efforts, Lenny has opened up the door for students to come to his site for a vast array of different rotations. Through his pioneering efforts, he has also empowered other members of his administrative staff to take on students as well. Lenny always teach-

Beta Eta Lindsey Dayer Dr Lindsey Dayer has recently taken over the position as Beta Eta’s Chapter Advisor. She has helped Beta Eta as a mentor and helped facilitate the many projects we have during the semester. She helped coordinate and attend our health screenings. She also helped create a t-shirt design for a fundraiser for our chapter that was very successful. Dr Dayer is also a wonderful example of professionalism in pharmacy. She is an assistant professor at in the College of Pharmacy at UAMS and also a clinical pharmacist at the Medical Oncology Clinic, Pallative Care Unit, and Anticoagulation Clinic at the UAMS Medical Center.

Beta Kappa Ross Tingen Ross (Jones) Tingen graduated from Campbell University School of Pharmacy in 2011. Since then, Ross has completed her PGY1 residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Mich. She is currently an emergency department pharmacist at the University of Michigan Adult Emergency Department in Ann Arbor. Ross believes Phi Delta Chi was one of the best decisions she ever made, because the Fraternity has helped her develop the leadership and communication skills that she uses every day in the emergency department.

Ross met her husband, Jeffrey, while in pharmacy school at Campbell through Phi Delta Chi and they recently welcomed a healthy baby boy to their family! Ross is involved with the Alpha Chapter. She attends as many events as possible and makes sure she attends their initiation every fall. Ross still attends Grand Council and recently served as the project director for Alumni Resources. She makes sure to keep in touch with Beta Kappa Chapter Brothers and alumni Brothers.

Beta Lambda Jose Valdes Jose Valdes is an inspiration to all the Brothers of Phi Delta Chi. He was Beta Lambda Chapter’s Worthy Prelate the year after he was initiated. Always ready to help and drive others, Jose showed no hesitation in excelling being a true Brother. He always boosted the morale of all chapter members 22

and pushed them to make Beta Lambda Brothers the best they could be. When asked what advice he has for future Brothers, Jose responded, “Follow the reflections of Brotherhood, and find the meaning of these for yourself. Look beyond the words and determine how they can enrich and impact you as a Brother, as a professional, and as a person.” After graduating in May 2012, Dr. Valdes pursued a PGY1 at Baptist Health Care in Pensacola, Fla. and recently completed his PGY2 in Psychiatry/Neurology at the Nova Southeastern University College of Pharmacy. After completion of his PGY2, he will continue his career in academia as an assistant faculty member at Nova Southeastern University College of Pharmacy. Jose’s involvement in did not stop after graduation. Currently he serves as an alumni mentor When asked what Phi Delta Chi meant to him, Jose replied: “Phi Delta Chi embodies the essence of Fraternal union and serves as a catalyst for personal growth. Many of my closest friends and colleagues are my Brothers, and it is the encouragement, support, and opportunities I received from Phi Delta Chi that I attribute many accomplishments to. The unfathomable strength of the Fraternal bond we share is something that can only be experienced, as there are no words to describe it in its entirety.” He represents the devotion that all Brothers of Phi Delta Chi should have for their Fraternity.

Beta Nu Ahmedul Ambia This year was our second year participating in Rutgers biggest philanthropic event, Dance Marathon. When our philanthropy committee asked Brothers to get involved and become dancers for the 30-hour long event, we were extremely happy when alumni Brother Ahmedul Ambia committed to being apart of Dance Marathon team for 2014. Dance Marathon is a huge commitment. Beyond committing to dancing at the Dance Marathon, each dancer must stay on his/her feet for 30 hours. The preparation for the event also requires extensive time. This commitment did not deter Ahmedul away, as he immediately started fundraising. To participate in Dance Marathon, each dancer needs to raise $350. Ahmedul went above and beyond, raising $600 for our team. This year we had more alumni donating because of Ahmedul! Ahmedul served as an inspiration for everyone in Beta Nu. Younger Brothers got a chance to really get to know him. Even older Brothers got a chance to bond with our amazing alumni.

Beta Xi Ivan Colorato Ivan Colorato graduated from Midwestern University in 2000 with his bachelor’s in pharmacy.

Upon graduation, he took a job with Walgreens and served as the pharmacy manager for 6.5 years. In 2006, he joined Target, where he began as the pharmacy manager before moving up and becoming the pharmacy business partner. He is currently working at Wal-Mart and has recently been promoted to market health and wellness director. He is presently living in the Chicagoland area with his wife and three children. Brother Colorato still remains a part of the Midwestern University community and attends the Annual Alumni Network Breakfast each year. He is a great source of information on the world of pharmacy, specifically in the areas of community pharmacy and management. We feel very privileged to have him as one of our alumni Brothers and we look forward to continued friendship with him.

Beta Omicron Jason Zucha Although Jason Zucha has rose to a high place in his career, he still makes it a practice to not only be involved with, but also give back to Phi Delta Chi. He remains involved by attending many regional events, such as Founders’ Day, as well as keeping a close connection with his Brothers. We hope to follow in his footsteps and continue to honor our Fraternity through our involvement, career advancements, as well as through financial gifts. .

Beta Pi Michael Aquino Michael Aquino graduated from Shenandoah University in 2010. Michael has been living in Florida since graduation. Although he is many states away, he still continues to surprise the Beta Pi Chapter. He has not only continued his loyal support of the chapter morally, but financially as well. He is a truly dedicated alumni member of the Beta Pi Chapter and we could never thank him enough for all of the support he gives us.

Beta Sigma Dr. Nhung Luong Dr. Nhung Luong is a 2013 graduate of Midwestern University College of PharmacyGlendale. While at Midwestern, she served as our Campus Liaison, a position established in our chapter in order to correspond with other organizations on campus.

Since graduation, Nhung has been working in one of the most challenging and highly sought-after residency positions in Arizona, at the Phoenix VA Healthcare System as a resident in their PGY1 Ambulatory Focused Pharmacy Program. How does Nhung describe her experience there so far?

“Great! I’ve learned so much and feel like it’s not enough. Knowledge is never constant, as you know with recent changes in guidelines [and] it’s fun being a part of that change.”

Dr. Luong is truly displaying the fervor for lifelong learning that we encourage at Beta Sigma and which is surely driving her success in such a demanding learning environment.

“It's a great learning environment and I love the healthy interdisciplinary relationships.”

Nhung is distinguishing herself as a talented professional in the ambulatory care field; of course, her success has not come without its challenges. Some of the obstacles she has had to overcome include developing her own approach to resolving situations, effectively interacting with various personalities, and becoming more efficient/effective in verbal and written communication. Even though she is a busy resident, she is able to manage her time so that she can stay involved with the collegiate Brothers of Beta Sigma.

Nhung is completing her residency and a Clinical Educator certificate in the next few months. She plans on earning her BCPS certification and possibly pursuing a PGY2 in Ambulatory Care.

Patrick Comerford macy, which is now Mobile Pharmacy Solutions. Together, they opened their location on the Buffalo-Niagara Medical Campus in April 2013. What sets this independent pharmacy apart is that it is not merely your runof-the-mill retail pharmacy; instead they place a heavy emphasis on clinical aspects and patient service. They are a full-service pharmacy that offers free delivery and free in-home counseling and medication review.

They also have services for disease state management and assist patients with complicated therapy regimens, such as insulin pumps.

This patient-friendly field of pharmacy takes customer service to the next level, and with patient knowledge and adherence to every detail, Patrick and Mobile Pharmacy Solutions guide their patients rather than send them out on their own. Patrick’s role in the company is the clinical program director, playing a key role in these services and building ideas for tomorrow on how to further improve the model. The company is growing each month, with more and more people discovering the customer-first mentality. Patrick has played a pivotal role in that growth and his leap into this unique niche has allowed him to change the expectations of pharmacy.

It’s his hope and ours that this one day becomes the norm rather than an upstart model, and, based on the early reviews, it appears to be heading in that direction.

Patrick has exemplified tremendous leadership, service, and advancement of the profession of pharmacy, embodying the mission and values of Phi Delta Chi.

COPD, and smoking cessation education and medication management services to pediatric (asthma only) and adult patients.

Teya’s PGY2 project is more academic in nature and focuses on improving pharmacy students’ written communication during a Drug Information APPE rotation. The Drug Information Service collaborated with the University of Montana Writing Center and began weekly writing workshops for the students on rotation. Specific areas being evaluated are responsiveness, thesis/support, organization, format, and grammar/spelling.

Data was collected and presented at Western States Conference in San Diego this May. She also developed and coordinated a spring semester pharmacy elective for P1, P2, and P3 students at the University of Montana titled “Postgraduate Pharmacy.” It is a onecredit elective that focuses on postgraduate opportunities available to new PharmD graduates. The elective provides students with information regarding residency (acute care, community, managed care), industry fellowships, graduate school, CV writing, building a portfolio, interviewing, etc. The program received positive feedback from the students and faculty. The University is considering continuing the elective during the spring semester after she leaves.

Her first manuscript, “Alemtuzumab: A Place in Therapy for Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis," was published in October 2013 in the International Journal of Clinical Medicine.

immediately by becoming the Worthy Prelate in the spring of 2007 and remaining in that position for three consecutive years. Beta Chi Chapter is not an organization with members; we define ourselves as a Fraternity with Brothers who have earned the right to call ourselves that. Justin has instilled that mentality into younger Brothers and is a reason why our chapter is as successful as it is today.

Professionally, Justin has excelled in every way. After graduating cum laude with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree in May 2012, he pursued a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Mass. Justin began an initiative to standardize education materials for oral chemotherapy counseling to improve patient outcomes in the ambulatory setting. This is a major area of interest in the field of oncology, because patients must be properly educated on how to take their medications and when to seek medical attention. Justin worked within various settings of the hospital, ranging from a cardiology-focused internal medicine floor, all the way to pediatric hematology and oncology. After completing a PGY1 residency, Justin felt the need to further his knowledge and mature clinically to provide the best care for his patients. He decided to pursue a PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy Residency at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, R.I. Why oncology? He found himself drawn to patients with cancer. He enjoyed the challenge of managing their complex disease states, and the possibility of remission promised unparalleled reward. His oncology patients continue to push him to the edge of his clinical practice knowledge, while teaching him about faith, perseverance, and grief. Justin’s achievements at Rhode Island Hospital are numerous. He conducted a medication utilization review to analyze the impact of oncology drug shortages on patient outcomes, including safety, efficacy, and cost. The significance of this can be explained by the implications these drug shortages have on patients, especially in an oncology setting. These shortages can result in delay or disruptions in chemotherapy, omission of medications, or an interchange to a significantly more expensive medication. He specifically looked at the nationwide leucovorin shortage and subse24

quent interchange to levoleucovorin with the primary outcome of examining the overall cost associated with levoleucovorin interchange and looking at secondary outcomes that include safety and objective patient responses. He presented his findings at the 10th Annual Hematology Oncology Pharmacy Association National Meeting in New Orleans in March with hopes of publishing his work in the near future. While finding time to conduct his research, Justin still had many responsibilities at Rhode Island Hospital. He facilitated clinical case conference presentations at the hospital and also lectures and facilitates therapeutic seminars at the University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy. He has led APPE NAPLEX reviews and was a co-preceptor in pharmacy clerkships at both UMass Memorial Medical Center and Rhode Island Hospital.

Recently, Justin accepted a job at Rhode Island Hospital as a clinical pharmacy specialist in Hematology/Oncology. His duties will include developing and maintaining clinical practice with a patient care service, cooperating with medical and nursing personnel to optimize the pharmacotherapeutic aspects of patient care, performing pharmacokinetic dosing and monitoring for all patients on drugs where therapeutic levels are reported, and providing visual, spoken, and written clinical education to pharmacy students, pharmacists, clinical pharmacists, and residents. These are only a few of the duties Justin will perform, the amount of responsibility he has put upon himself is staggering and speaks to his contributions to the profession of pharmacy.

Justin’s goal is to develop medication therapy management services, as well as establish a pharmacist-run palliative care clinic to meet the unique needs of oncology patients, particularly with supportive care. He is also planning to become a board certified oncology pharmacist. As a pharmacist, Justin is indisputably great. As a Brother/alumnus of , he is a cornerstone of Beta Chi. He is always available for guidance and makes every effort to reach out to the chapter whenever he can. Although he lives in Providence now, his presence is always felt and his contributions to our chapter are what help shape us into future great pharmacists.

Andrea Clemmings has always been a very passionate Brother, as well as a pharmacy member. She is most deserving of the Distinguished Alumni Award. She has maintained ties to the Beta Psi Chapter and is easily accessible to the current Brothers.

Upon graduation from the University of Minnesota, College of Pharmacy in May 2013, she started working as a pharmacist for Walgreens in the Twin Cities area. In November 2013, she took a position at the Walgreens Chaska location as staff pharmacist. She had previously networked with the new manager at that location and was recruited for the position. Andrea enjoys the independence of working as a pharmacist. She has always been passionate about patient care and has been hoping to begin Medication Therapy Management sessions at the Chaska Walgreens location. One of the things she loves most about being a community pharmacist is getting to know her patients. She loves having repeat customers and enjoys creating a relationship with them. Andrea has certainly distinguished herself within the profession and is a role model for her Brothers.

Beta Omega Dr. Christine Burch Dr. Christine Burch is a clinical specialist at the Behavioral Health Centers of Carolinas HealthCare System. In addition to precepting CMC pharmacy residents, Dr. Burch precepts pharmacy students from both Wingate Univeristy and the Univeristy of North Carolina Chapel Hill. On top of performing clinical pharmacy services for inpatient psychiatry, Dr. Burch also serves as the pharmacy supervisor for the outpatient pharmacy clinic. Brother Burch spends her spare time as a board member for the Core Compassion Project. In December 2012, this non-profit organization opened its doors to cancer surviors and empowers them physically, mentally, and emotionally through Pilates. The Core Compassion Project works tirelessly to raise scholarships to make these services more affordable. Not only did Dr. Burch organize a Girls Night Out fundraiser this fall, she reached out to Beta Omega Brothers to get involved in the organization’s efforts. Brother Burch has been described as being heavily involved in the community, as well as being a great Brother to chapter members. She is always willing to help and give meaningful advice. Gamma Alpha Josh Davis Gamma Alpha is proud to recognize Brother Josh Davis, 2013, as our Distinguished Alumnus. During his undergraduate years, Josh dedicated a lot of his time to Gamma Alpha and served as our Worthy Keeper of Finance. He regularly attended all our events, and inspired younger Brothers to do more for our Fraternity as well as our profession. This has not changed since Josh entered alumnus status in 2013. Josh recently served a PGY1 at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque. Despite his busy schedule, Josh still makes it to rush and pledging events to get to know the newer Brothers of Gamma Alpha. Josh also makes a special effort to spend time with his family line (littles and grandlittles) to keep a tight bond between Brothers. What distinguishes Josh from others is his dedication to his profession, and his determination to motivate others to become leaders in pharmacy as well. As busy as he is, Josh returns regularly to the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy as a guest speaker. He not only serves on panels to answer questions about rotations and post-graduate training, but he also spends one-on-one time with Gamma Alpha Brothers to guide and help us advance in our careers. He shares with us his experiences and what steps he took to obtain a residency. Josh also serves as a preceptor for pharmacy students and provides invaluable advice as a recent graduate. As a health care professional, Josh serves his community well and is revered by his colleagues and patients. As a Brother, Josh is inspiring to us all and is the epitome of a distinguished alumnus.

Gamma Gamma Michael Justice Dr. Michael Justice is an assistant professor of pharmacy practice at the Appalachian College of Pharmacy in Oakwood, Va. He earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Appalachian College of Pharmacy. Upon completion of pharmacy school, he also completed a PGY1 Community Pharmacy Practice residency from the Appalachian College of Pharmacy. He holds a bachelor of science degree in biology from West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.Va. Dr. Justice is a native of Welch, W.Va. Brother Justice’s practice site with the Appalachian College of Pharmacy is at K-VAT Food Stores Inc., Food City in Abingdon, Va. In addition to being a Brother of Phi Delta Chi, he is also a member of the American Society of Health Systems Pharmacists (ASHP), and the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). His professional interests include immunizations, diabetes management, medication therapy management, and drug addiction.

Michael currently resides in Piney Flats, Tenn. Brother Justice spends his free time with his family and friends. He also enjoys drawing, painting, reading, hiking, and fishing.

Gamma Beta PJ Pitts Brother PJ Pitts was a member of the founding Gamma Beta Chapter, established in 2007. She played an active role in allowing the chapter to come to fruition and set an excellent standard for what a true Phi Delta Chi Brother should be. She continued her devotion to helping the community near and far by volunteering to go to Haiti with Project Medishare after the earthquake hit to help with disaster relief. She became the chief pharmacy officer of Medishare, providing invaluable services of caring for patients and educating other health care providers and the community about the importance of proper patient education and disease prevention. Alpha Chapter Brothers and pledges participate in Fall Chore Day 2013, where they perform landscaping chores for elderly residents in the community.

Alpha Chapter University of Michigan Our chapter has volunteered at Ann Arbor’s Hands-On Museum, a local interactive science museum. This favorite event allows Brothers to interact with children and promote science in a fun and engaging way.

We have also put on several bingo events at local retirement communities. We are proud of our pledges for initiating a book drive to benefit The University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. Brothers collected novels and storybooks for Mott volunteers to offer to patients. Our chapter also participated in a local walk for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and began a monthly program where we make sandwiches for a local homeless shelter.

Our college has a required research investigation project that students must complete before they can graduate. Our professionalism committee put together a database that details upperclassmen’s research endeavors, their faculty mentor, and the faculty mentor’s research background. This greatly helped our Brothers identify excellent mentors. Professionalism has also hosted a pharmacy speaker series, including a talk by Dr. Kraft, a respected faculty member, about how to sharpen interview skills. In addition, the committee hosted a presentation by the Great Lakes Clean Water Organization, explaining their “Yellow Jugs, Old Drugs” campaign, which promotes the proper disposal of expired drugs to decrease medication pollution in the environment.

To promote scholarship, we have the “A is for Alpha” program, where Brothers who earn As on their exams submit their names to a raffle drawn at every month’s formal meeting. We hold trivia games that offer an 26

opportunity to review for our college’s Top Drug exams and offer formal patient counseling practice to the P1 class to help with their patient communication courses.

This past year was the first time our chapter was able to be selective regarding pledges whom we wanted as Brothers. Previously, our College required us to admit anyone who wished to join. We set high standards for our pledges and they exceeded them by every possible measure. We have 27 new excellent Brothers. February was designated Love Your Brother month. We encouraged Brothers to send Valentine’s cards to each other, expressing appreciation for the work they did. We also started a safe-ride program in February, in which Brothers volunteered to give late night rides to other Brothers.

We participated in the popular event whirlyball, which is essentially playing basketball while all the players are driving bumper cars. Dr. Tingen and Dr. Carver were able to attend whirlyball and all Brothers appreciated their attendance. Our winter retreat was in Traverse City where we had a large chapter dinner, relaxed and bonded. Our Brotherhood lineage cook-off was a great success as Brothers from different lineages squared off to cook different dishes.

We are proud of the 14 Brothers who were recipients of leadership scholarships in our college in the past year.

We put on a wide variety of creative rush events to attract new members. One new event was a speed dating night to give the Brothers and pledges a chance to get to know each other better. These events helped our chapter to recruit 41 new Brothers! Our social events have included an annual Sugar River tubing event, comedy club night, and the secret santa exchange. New events this year included a Kalahari Resort Water Park trip as well as an Olympic Ceremony viewing event.

Epsilon Chapter Univ. of the Sciences in Philadelphia In the fall, we organized a Phi Delta Chi Careers in Pharmacy week. The week included a pharmacy carnival night, which offered pharmacy related games, a St. Jude Letter writing campaign, a pharmacy interprofessional care speaker event, and pharmacy poster presentations. Alumni Brother Mathew Grissinger gave a talk about his experience with interprofessional care in pharmacy. We also coordinated a Philadelphia College of Pharmacy name badge sale and a “No Shave November” philanthropy fundraising event. We hosted PCP Accepted Student’s Days; a “What is a Rotation?” event

On Bid night, we were joined by Alpha Omicron and Ralph Saroyan. We walked to the respective dorm rooms and handed out the traditional Epsilon bid of a pill vial containing a bid sheet. Afterwards, we went back to the house and had brotherly bonding with our Brothers from Temple.

We participated in the University of the Sciences Olympics this spring semester, medalling in several sports and activities.

In February, pledges visited a Walgreens Pharmacy to discuss vitamins, minerals, and other over-the-counter supplements. They assisted patients who needed clarification on the medications or supplements they were taking. The pledges hoped to boost medication adherence and health literacy in patients. The pledges also raised $800 from a bake sale, with some of the proceeds going to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Brothers raised $500 from selling rose-grams to students during Valentine’s week.

We recruited 35 pledges this year. We thank Worthy Inner Guards Peter Truong and Yuumi Miyazawa and Worthy Master-AtArms Alicia Wong and Stephanie Wong for their hard work. We took our annual Lake Tahoe trip in January, where we participated in winter games and went hiking. We also held Big Bro Revealing, Outdoor Games Day, and a Talent Show in the winter quarter. Some of our alumni attended our annual Alumni Mixer and Thanksgiving Dinner and shared their experiences with Brothers.

This year, 33 of our Brothers reported taking on leadership positions. One of them, Michael Yang, a P3 Brother, was named Student of the Quarter by the students of the School of Pharmacy. Michael helped students in physiology, gave rides to those who needed it, and cooked meals for others.

Eta Chapter Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences In early October, we participated in the on-site flu clinic at our university. More than 30 alumni and undergraduate Brothers made a dramatic impact on our peers. That day, we administered more than 1,200 flu shots. We continued our traditional Brown Bag Event at churches in the area, providing counseling, using one of our volunteer pharmacists (either alumni or advisors), and distributing pharmacy supplies to parish members. We also participated in the annual Mission Hill Road Race, nutrition development, MCPHS University Gives Back Neighborhood Clean Up, and Doc Rivers’ Charity Hoop Dreams.

We have many Brothers who are part of ASHP, APHA, AMCP, and NCPA. We also have a number of Brothers who hold eboard positions within each organization.

We continue to promote scholastic excellence through tutoring sessions on science subjects that are open to the entire school.

Brothers Brandon Roque and Danny Le have been inducted into Rho Chi. Last spring, we initiated 12 Brothers and this spring we initiated 11 more, bringing our chapter to a total of 57 Brothers. We hold Brother days as frequently as possible, to strengthen our Brotherhood and allow us to unwind after a hard day’s work. Two years in a row, we were able to get a section of Celtics tickets in the TD Garden.

The number of alumni and undergraduates attending our annual alumni banquet continues to grow. This year, we had 97 Brothers attend. The alumni chapter awarded scholarships to six undergrad Brothers who had the highest GPA in their graduating year, and who were also active on campus and in our Fraternity.

Scholastically, all prospective Brothers are required to complete weekly study hours throughout the rush process. We also have many Brothers who have been initiated into Rho Chi Society and Phi Lambda Sigma.

Our 2013 window display received thirdplace nationally and has been recognized by the dean of our college.

Events on our social calendar included a chapter picnic, a secret Santa social, and a karaoke night. We also hosted a spring alumni banquet to honor Brothers.

dent-run clinic in Minneapolis. Partnering with Cub Pharmacy allowed Brothers the opportunity to provide diabetes glucose testing, educate patients, and administer influenza vaccinations. We had a great year volunteering for St. Jude at three events in the Twin Cities.

Theta Study Night was initiated this year.

Brothers gathered at the house to help each other study. Our alumni chapter sponsored a scholarship for a Brother this year. We are proud to say Theta Brothers hold 30 different leadership positions within the college.

Some of the special awards given to Theta Brothers this year include MPSA Liaison of the Year, MPSA Spokesperson of the Year, Phi Lambda Sigma Most Promising New Member, Peters Excellence and Achievement Scholarships, and the Metropolitan Professional Pharmacists Society Award.

Thirty-two new Brothers were initiated this fall—the largest pledge class in many years. Brothers participated in intramural volleyball and dodgeball this fall and have participated in volleyball and softball during the spring semester. Over the holiday, Brothers helped to decorate the Christmas tree at the house, while enjoying egg nog and holiday cookies. Winter break brought the second annual ski/snowboard trip to Lutsen, Minn. More then 30 Brothers attended the Ice Hockey Classic, which took place at the TCF Bank Stadium and featured the Gophers vs. Ohio State.

The new alumni chapter president, Dr. Derek Labar, and treasurer, Dr. Steve Larson, have created pharmacist shadowing and CV review opportunities for Brothers, in addition to hosting a residency panel.

Iota Chapter University of Maryland For the first time, Iota Brothers hosted an HIV-Awareness Event in collaboration with SMdPhA. The event involved free food for 28

guests, trivia, games, and an opportunity to further unite the student body. We hosted a Red Cross blood drive at the School of Pharmacy. Brothers registered and cared for donors and coordinated smooth transitions.

Another event in its second year was Project Jumpstart, where Brothers prepared peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and delivered them to the homeless around Baltimore. To further our community service initiative, Brothers cleaned our designated Adopt-AHighway road, organized events with children at the Ronald McDonald House, and provided home-cooked meals for families of patients residing at Home Lodge. We also supported various activities, such as the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Awareness 5K walk/run and the Diabetes Walk in the inner harbor of Baltimore.

Crab Feast was one of our popular social events, with endless all-you-can-eat crabs.

Our spring formal was held at the World Trade Center on April 26.

Congratulations to Brothers Emily Dunn, Miguel Franquiz, Joseph Goble, Lucy Hahn, Adrienne Herman, Peter Kaiser, Andongfac Nkobena, and Christine Tobin, who were inducted into Rho Chi Society.

We have instituted monthly brown bag sessions at the Jewish Community Center (see photo) and participated in the St. Jude Give Thanks Walk, where we ranked second in the entire Pittsburgh area by raising more than $5,000.

We were proud to host Grand Vice President of Collegiate Affairs, Lexie Turner, on Founders’ Day weekend, where we gathered with Brothers from Beta Gamma in a ceremony commemorating our Founders, followed by a luncheon.

Additional highlights include monthly brown bag educational sessions, Brother Kyle McGrath serving as regional correspondent for the Great Lakes Region, and five Brothers being inducted into Rho Chi, the largest number of any of the fraternities within the school. We inducted 14 new Brothers into the chapter. We are fortunate to have had Brother Nick Schwier, who was a PGY2 resident this past year, act as an unofficial mentor for our chapter, precepting professional events, and aiding in Brothers’ career planning.

Nu Chapter University of Iowa Nu Chapter has participated in many professional and service events this year. We

work with the Ronald McDonald House cooking meals for the families who stay there. We caroled at Oaknoll Retirement Community. We walk for many causes— many of our Brothers have been touched by diseases, such as ALS, cancer, or diabetes.

Professionally, we offered blood pressure screenings at local pharmacies. We partnered with Hy-Vee’s Mobile Clinic, offering blood pressure, diabetes, and bone density screenings, as well as immunization clinics and brown bag events.

While we have some Brothers involved in honor societies and leadership conferences in our chapter, we have improved our scholarship through Bueller Bank, which advocates attendance. Class skippers contribute financially, which is used to finance a social event. Smarties lets Brothers recognize one

another for their hard work.

We hold weekly study tables, where Brothers can work on assignments.

In addition to welcoming 15 new Brothers, we enjoyed tailgates before football games. We cleaned the press box before a game, and enjoyed a lunch social following our hard work. We have also held socials involving basketball and hockey games. We also held a Christmas party and multiple dinner events.

Omicron Chapter University of Southern California We partnered with Hope Through Housing, a subsidized senior living community, to provide diabetes education. We expanded the program, now titled Health Connect, to provide education on a variety of topics, such as medication safety, nutrition, and heartburn awareness to the senior community. Undergrads and alumni worked together to provide both hypertension screenings and a brown bag event. Our chapter began a new service project, Mentor Day, which took place at Bravo High School. Brothers met with students to expose them to professions in the medical field, including pharmacy.

Mentorship encompassed explaining both the basics of how pharmacists have an impact on the community, to providing direction for students interested in pursuing a career in the health industry. In addition to both the St. Jude letter writing and participation in a 5k run, we also raised $1,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and the Cancer Society and Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand. Over the past six years, we raised nearly $8,000 for this worthy cause.

This past spring, we hosted a mock interview night that was open to all USC pharmacy students. The event was geared toward first-year students searching for their first intern positions. PDC alumni spoke about the importance of professionalism and provided pointers about demeanor and presentation.

We welcomed 58 new Brothers this spring. Also in the spring, 12 Brothers were initiated into Rho Chi Society, which brought a total of 24 Brothers into the prestigious society. Over 35% of our chapter currently holds a campus leadership position; however, our records show that more than 70% of our Brothers will hold a leadership position during their time at pharmacy school.

This year, 14 Omicron Chapter Brothers were awarded scholarships for achievement in academics and leadership, with the awards totaling more than $55,000. We celebrated more than 40% of our 2013 graduat-

ing class gaining entry into a fellowship or residency program this past spring. We congratulate Dr. Jeff Goad on his recent appointment as department chair of the School of Pharmacy at Chapman University.

We are saddened by the passing of our beloved advisor, Dr. Ronald Alkana. He was a beloved and respected Brother in all of our lives. Rho Chapter University of Oklahoma We participated in the St. Jude Give Thanks Walk again in November and raised $1,242. Brother Christina Phillips and WP Natalie Hall served as chairs for our school’s Make-A-Wish silent auction in January. We raised more than $13,000 this year!

On campus, Rho Brothers are represented as officers in every single OU College of Pharmacy organization, with 43 Brothers serving in leadership roles. Many of them serve in multiple roles. We initiated six more Brothers into Phi Lambda Sigma this year; this makes a total of 19 Brothers in PLS. We also have seven Brothers in Rho Chi. Brothers Christina Phillips and Allyson Votruba won the Christensen Memorial Young Investigator Award for their research.

At our school’s Business Plan Competition, an all-Rho team, consisting of Jessalynn Nguyen, Annie Pham, and Charles Mathew, won in Oklahoma City, and Lindsay Bebout’s team won in Tulsa. Christina Phillips and Andrea Rai won Student Recognition Awards at the APhA-ASP Midyear Regional Meeting. Christina Phillips also won our local counseling competition out of

50 participants, and she represented OU College of Pharmacy at the National Patient Counseling Competition in Orlando.

This year’s rush theme was “Join the real SuperheRHOs!” and we welcomed 35 new Brothers into our chapter. We continue to attend sporting events together, cheering on the Oklahoma City Thunder, Tulsa Drillers, and Tulsa 66ers. We also get together regularly for trivia nights at local establishments.

Fitness is important to many of us, and we form teams at various 5Ks, such as Warrior Dash and Color Run. Governor Mary Fallin appointed alumnus Justin Wilson to serve on the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy and following the 2013 Grand Council; Andrea Bourque was appointed as the Regional Director of Alumni Affairs for the Southcentral Region.

Sigma Chapter University of Colorado Our professional projects have included fall prevention talks held in Louisville, Colo., the Alzheimer’s Walk, held in Denver, and various health fairs, including the St. Pius Health Fair and the Walgreens Flu Clinic. In addition, one of Sigma Chapter’s biggest events every year is the Buffalo Wild Wings Eating Contest to raise money for St. Jude.

This event is open to Brothers of the Sigma and Gamma Rho Chapters, and all students and faculty in the School of Pharmacy.

Sigma initiated 20 new brothers November 2013.

For scholarship, our chapter implemented study halls in September 2013. This was important to implement, since our school of pharmacy started a completely new curriculum in fall 2012. This year, our chapter hosted the regional conference.

We held a ski retreat over the Martin Luther King weekend, which was open to all Brothers in the mountain region. The retreat was held in a cabin in Breckenridge, Colo. and consisted of skiing, snowboarding, and team-building activities. About 25 undergraduate Sigma Brothers attended.

Our Chapter Advisor, Doug Fish, has been very supportive. The Anschutz Medical Campus also acquired a new director of admissions, Candido Chacon, a Sigma alumnus who has also been supportive. Chapter Advisor Sarah Anderson has helped with our philanthropy events, and was precepting our fall prevention talks.

Tau Chapter Purdue University We hosted our first Phil Slater Memorial 5K as a fundraiser for St. Jude, which was a great success. In the fall, we organized a Hoops for Hope tournament for St. Jude, volunteered at Boo at the Zoo in Indianapolis, and had two large groups work on our school’s Winterization, in which students volunteer to help senior citizens prepare for the winter months. We also hosted a faculty breakfast so that our Brothers had a chance to interact with professors from the College of Pharmacy.

Many Brothers have taken leadership positions in organizations on campus, including student government and as resident assistants in the dormitories. In fall 2013, we initiated 24 new Brothers.

Last year, we formed an intramural volleyball team for the first time. We have numerous other social events, including the very successful Disney movie nights. We held a winter formal to celebrate the initiation of our new Brothers and held a Founders’ Day event, which was attended by several alumni.

Phi Chapter Creighton University Phi worked with several organizations in the Omaha community and abroad. Events include jewelry making with Beads for Malaria to fund the purchase of mosquito nets, a Christmas gift drive with Open Door Mission, and both a letter writing campaign and making Valentine’s cards to send to our friends at St. Jude.

The Scholastics Committee organized weekly study halls and info sessions, such as “How to Survive Pharmacy School.” At these sessions, older Brothers gave underclassmen tips and study strategies on how to keep sane through the daily grind. Brother Morgan Pusek received the university’s Mary Lucretia and Sarah Emily Creighton Award, which is presented to one student who serves as a role model of accomplishment for women and encourages the development of their talents and acheivements. In addition, eight Brothers were inducted into Rho Chi. This year we initiated more than 50 new Brothers into our chapter, setting a new record. Our Social Committee helped bring Brothers together with bowling, themed parties, and restaurant get-togethers. One of the best nights included a “Food Bus,” where Brothers got to hang out and cruise the streets of Omaha together on a chartered bus. www.phideltachi.org

We continued our service through Project Linus, where Brothers got together and made blankets for distribution to critically ill children in hospitals, shelters, social service agencies, etc. around the state.

This year, Chi Chapter welcomed seven new Brothers who are eager to continue our chapter’s commitment to serve our school and local community. A number of Chi Brothers participated in intramural sports teams this year, including intramural football, soccer, basketball, and swimming.

The Psi Chapter has continued our involvement with the Salvation Army’s Canteen program, where we help to serve breakfast to the homeless in Des Moines. We also worked with Lambda Kappa Sigma and Kappa Psi at Drake to implement a semiannual highway-cleaning program. This was also our fourth year participating in the annual university-wide blood drive. This spring, we participated in a Des Moines Science Center event called Girls in Science, which encourages young girls to pursue careers in a variety of scientific fields.

We have sophomore study group, where P1 students help tutor younger sophomores in organic chemistry and medical microbiology. The P1 students also use this time to practice blood pressure screenings and patient interviewing skills. We welcomed 17 new Brothers in the fall.

We won the co-ed intramural volleyball season, the co-ed basketball season, and the campus-wide dodgeball tournament.

We had a semester packed full of professional and service projects. We started organizing blood pressure screenings at various pharmacies across Memphis and Knoxville.

We hold weekly tutoring sessions for lower socio-economic children to help them complete their homework assignments, as well as strengthen their math and reading skills.

Additionally, we have hosted four events at the Ronald McDonald House and one event at the Tennessee Baptist Children’s Home.

Our chapter initiated 59 new Brothers in January. Our chapter had several successful social events, beginning with a paint party, a rave party, and a formal. We also hosted a joint Halloween party with Kappa Psi, a wine and cheese party with the national officers, and a Christmas potluck.

Alumni Brother Nick Capote was elected as APhA-ASP National President-Elect. Nick said in his speech for APhA President, “I view pharmacy as a lifetime commitment to my patients, colleagues, and profession. My

Ostarine, the novel drug created by Brother Dr. Duane Miller, a faculty member at UTCOP, passed phase-three trials this past year and is to be marketed in the European Union. Jeff Bogue, Omega Advisor, retired after serving at UT for 21 years.

Alpha Gamma Chapter University of North Carolina Our Brothers presented information on healthy sleep topics at a table in the main lobby of our school, at the campus health pharmacy, and at the entrance to Pharmacy Family Day. We spoke with patients about strategies for better sleep, along with common myths. We displayed posters about quality sleep throughout the local Chapel Hill bus system. The chapter has raised more than $3,800 from a combination of the letter writing campaign and the benefit concert for St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

We volunteered at the Inter-Faith Counsel soup kitchen in Chapel Hill to prepare food and serve the homeless. Once a semester, Brothers gather for Adopt-A-Highway, and the chapter collects aluminum tabs to donate to the Ronald McDonald House.

Our Scholarship Committee promotes scholastic achievement through workshopstyle learning. In our SPI Workshop, P1s were encouraged to obtain a comprehensive medication history from mock patients, P2, and P3 Brothers. In preparation for the P2 diabetes exam, a Jeopardy-style study session was held with four competing teams. To help Brothers prepare for their OSCE, a workshop was organized as a series of five simulated patient scenarios run by P3 Brothers. The Calculation Domination Workshop provides extra calculation practice, which encompasses pertinent concepts addressed throughout a pharmaceutical care lab, such 32

as allegations and milliequivalents. The SOAP Note Workshop introduced P1s to the format and requirements for their first SOAP Note. After winning the 2013 John D. Grabenstein Award, the 2013–2014 Leadership Committee was committed to maintaining momentum, including continuing the Leadership Panel, a panel of 10 distinguished Brothers in the school, who help younger Brothers achieve success during elections in our and other organizations.

Additionally, we have implemented some new events, including a CV/residency workshop, a Mentorship Presentation in conjunction with Phi Lambda Sigma, and a motivational talk with a distinguished alumnus. Eight Brothers were inducted into the Rho Chi Society and three were accepted into Phi Lambda Sigma.

We proudly welcomed 45 new members in November, which nearly doubled our chapter. We participated in two functions hosted by the UNC Pharmacy Foundation: the Alumni Golf Tournament in September, and the Alumni Weekend in October. We also co-hosted a tailgate with Kappa Epsilon for the UNC vs. ECU football game, hosted our 2nd Cornhole Tournament, organized a Trivia Night, and enjoyed a semi-formal event at the Chapel Hill Underground.

Alpha Delta Chapter Virginia Commonwealth University Alpha Delta held service events in the community that included conducting blood pressure/blood glucose screenings, administering flu vaccines, and providing education about important topics in pharmacy.

We held a social event at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts for Brothers, faculty, and alumni. We also continued our Wine and Design night, where Brothers relaxed and painted while raising funds for St. Jude.

During fall rush, we welcomed 18 new Brothers to our chapter. This past semester, we had a 43-member pledge class. April Boucher was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi honor society. Tehra James received the ASHP and VSHP Mid-Year Scholarship, which is awarded to a student who has been highly involved in the organization for his or her entire four years of school.

Alumni Brother Dr. Lauren Caldas had an exciting year. She was awarded the Virginia Pharmacist Association (VPhA) Distinguished Young Pharmacist in 2012. She will also receive the VPhA Top 10 Under 10 Award at Mid-Year this August. (See more on Dr. Caldas on page 17 of this issue.)

Alpha Epsilon Chapter University of Mississippi In spring 2013, we held a Kids Club activity and a lunch for the custodial staff of the School of Pharmacy. We, along with AMCP, held a blood pressure screening for members of the Oxford community.

We held our first “Phi Delta Cry” event during the fall 2013 semester. Brothers came together to relieve stress from the semester. Refreshments were provided and a classic college movie was watched.

James Parret received the honor of being elected to the ASB senate. Cody Clifton wrote an amendment that will be headed for a vote and hopefully put into the APhA bylaws. It has even reached their board of directors.

Alpha Zeta Chapter Idaho State University In November, we dedicated some of our time to cooking dinner for the children of the Bannock House. We also spent time playing basketball, tag, and card games with the children.

Many Brothers have been involved in leadership roles. There are Brothers who hold officer positions in PPSA, Operation Diabetes, GenRx, and student government.

In November, we welcomed 11 new Brothers to the Alpha Zeta Chapter. We decorated a float to represent the College of Pharmacy and Bengal Pharmacy for the Homecoming parade and also worked in the concession stand during the football game.

Alpha Theta Chapter Albany College of Pharmacy We participated in several window displays at the local Walmart to promote cough and cold consultation and adherence. We also offered blood pressure screenings to Walmart customers. We host a blood drive each semester in conjunction with the Red Cross. We helped set up for the Making Strides for Breast Cancer Walk, participated in Light the Night for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and in Relay for Life.

We also volunteer at St. John’s Soup Kitchen and the Albany Ronald McDonald House.

Brothers gathered in the summer for our annual Big Brother barbecue at Brother Steve Beecher’s house on the Hudson River.

We also hosted our Mustachio Bashio/Ugly Sweater Party and Wine and Cheese formal event. We held our popular Wing Ding event at Andy’s Place in Albany. Wing Ding is a great celebration of Brotherhood, with Brothers attending from across the country.

need help. Four Brothers were inducted into Phi Lambda Sigma and one was inducted into Rho Chi. Several Brothers are active leaders on the ACPHS campus. Over the past year, more than a dozen active Brothers have made Dean’s List. Congratulations to Zacahary Sherman for receiving an award for excellence on his IPPE rotation and Jeff Nissen for being named a Student Ambassador to ACPHS. We welcomed 10 pledges, the largest pledge class in recent history. The Brothers of Alpha Theta mourn the loss of our beloved Brother Dustin J. Baker, who passed away unexpectedly earlier this year.

Sixteen alumni Brothers were present for initiation. Brother Amar Patel became pharmacy manager at a Walmart pharmacy near Albany. Through his connections with Walmart, we have been able to present on many topics in several pharmacy locations. Our strong alumni presence has continued to contribute to our growth and success.

Alpha Iota Chapter University of Georgia We had Brothers volunteer at the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia this past January and we have done two cleanups for Adopt-AHighway. One of our new St. Jude philanthropy events is Rent-A-Brother, where we exchange manual labor for money to be donated to the research hospital. Brothers have raked a professor’s lawn, moved a refrigerator, washed a car, and groomed a cat. We raised $210. We continue to sponsor Organizational Hour at the College of Pharmacy.

We bring in Dr. Larry Aull, a pharmacist who conducts clinical trials; he talks with students about his experiences and allows them the opportunity to network.

Alpha Iota Brothers who achieved Dean’s List or Presidential Scholar status are recognized at Alpha Iota’s annual formal in March 2013.

Twelve Alpha Iota Brothers were awarded academic scholarships at our 2013–14 college of pharmacy’s annual scholarship ceremony. Through our chapter’s Course Champions program, Brothers who excelled at a particular class are recognized for their achievement and help guide others through the class by giving valuable advice and study tips. Brothers continue to update the online rotations guide and study guide database.

Brothers who work hard and attain the Dean’s List or Presidential Scholar status were also recognized at our annual formal.

Alpha Iota welcomed 27 new Brothers over the course of the 2013–2014 year.

These 27 pledges organized a volunteer effort at Learning Ally and recorded audio books for children with reading and learning disabilities. Pledges also planned a game night and hosted the Halloween party.

We hosted the Southeast Regional Olympics, which included a day full of field games and ended with a Low-Country Boil.

Other social gatherings included a reverse progressive dinner, laser tag, multiple movie/game nights, homecoming tailgate, Carnivore Carnival, which included watching college football and enjoying some burgers and barbecue, and a Thanksgiving potluck.

Alpha Kappa Chapter South Carolina College of Pharmacy-Charleston We prepared and served meals to families at the MUSC Children’s Hospital on a monthly basis and are currently knitting and crocheting blankets to be donated to the hospital. Brothers took part in a Habitat for Humanity build over a period of two weeks in North Charleston.

We are proud to recognize P4 Brother Marley Linder, who serves as the National Member At-Large for Phi Lambda Sigma for the 2013–2014 academic year. Five Brothers were inducted into Rho Chi during the 2012–2013 academic year.

Alpha Kappa is proud to welcome 29 new Brothers as of December 2013, bringing our undergraduate chapter size to 70 Brothers.

We celebrated Founders’ Day with a brunch. Brothers participated in a Kickball Tournament for the American Heart Association, hosted by Chapter Advisor Dr. Amy Thompson.

Dr. Bob Davis, an Alpha Kappa alumnus, has joined the staff of the Kennedy Pharmacy Innovation Center at the USC Campus, and serves as Chapter Advisor of the newly reactivated Beta Theta Chapter. Dr. Kelly Ragucci, initiated as a faculty member in December 2013, has been named chair of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Outcomes Sciences at the MUSC campus.

Alpha Lambda Chapter University of Connecticut Our chapter holds a pharmCAS info session that all the pre-pharmacy students attend. In this session, we go over a practice application to the pharmCAS website and instruct the audience on the best ways to stay organized when applying to pharmacy schools. Similarly, we hold a rotations nights, where P4s come back and talk about their experiences on rotations, while advising the P3s on the best course for choosing their rotation sites.

We have newly created committee chairs who have been able to integrate every Brother into an active group. The chairs of our social, philanthropy, and professional committees are not officers, and that has helped to delegate responsibilities among more Brothers.

One of our favorite annual events is Oozeball, a mud volleyball tournament. After weeks of practice, we were able to progress pretty far into the tournament bracket this year.

Alpha Mu Chapter University of Wyoming Brothers offered osteoporosis screenings and counseling at our School of Pharmacy’s 7th annual Fall into Good Health Fair. To raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, our chapter held a penny war against the classes and faculty of the School of Pharmacy. We raised more than $1,000.

With this, Brother Lisa Ohnstad was able to run in the St. Jude Heroes Half Marathon at Disneyland in support of St Jude. Our chapter also held multiple letter-writing campaign events to raise awareness for St. Jude.

Brothers continue to serve as leaders in our School of Pharmacy. Seven Brothers are members of Phi Lambda Sigma. Forrest Floyd serves as president of the P3 class and president of NCPA. Matthew Robison is vice president of the P2 class and President-Elect of WSSHP. We welcomed eight new Brothers this fall, which nearly doubled the size of our chapter. Our officer retreat was spent camping at Vedauwoo. Brothers also spent an afternoon sledding at Happyjack. Sung Ho continues to dominate on the badminton court every Friday night at Half Acre Gym. We hold an annual Chili Cook-Off, and this year, we had our pledges participate on a separate team.

After more than 30 years as a faculty member, Dr. Bruce Culver announced his retirement in spring 2014. Dr. Culver has been an advisor and mentor to our chapter throughout his time at the University of Wyoming, and his support has shown us what it means to be a Brother for Life.

Alpha Nu Chapter University of Arizona We continue to support our community by volunteering one Saturday every month at a local park to pick up trash and remove graffiti. This project helps our chapter stand out in the community, and it’s a fun way for us to spend a morning. We promoted pharmacy as a career during the Pharmacy on the Mall event on our main U of A campus.

We welcomed 29 Brothers into our family in the fall. Our chapter now has 131 active Brothers. During our annual faculty vs. students spring softball tournament, the faculty team overcame strong opposition to beat the students. This tournament raises funds to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

This year, we had record numbers of Brothers elected into Rho Chi. Of the 56 P3 and P4 Brothers in our chapter, 12 are in Rho Chi. More than a third of our Brothers hold an officer positions in other campus organizations.

Alpha Omicron Chapter Temple University During Pharmacy Week this past October, some Brothers helped counsel patients on hypertension. In November, Brothers traveled to the Food Bank of South Jersey, where they helped to organize food. Brothers volunteered to serve dinner to the homeless at the Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission in Philadelphia. In December, Brothers volunteered at Philabundance, a food bank located in South Philadelphia, which serves the needs of 70,000 local citizens.

Alpha Omicron Brothers hold various leadership positions on campus. Terrence Gardner is the class of 2015 president, Samantha Brown serves as ASCP president, and Kevin Kalladeen is NJPhA president.

Daniel Vanorn is Class of 2017 president.

Several other Brothers are chairs of commitees or hold officer positions. Brothers Choi and Chris To were inducted into Rho Chi, bringing the total of PDC Brothers in Rho Chi to seven.

We had 27 new Brothers join the chapter.

We are fortunate to have alumni who are involved and dedicated. Sejal Patel is a constant supporter. She attended Grand Council with us and was active in the pledging process. Alumnus Jeneane Lee Acker has attended our pledge dinner and the summer barbecue. Stephanie Slog is a fellow with Pfizer and has been helping Brothers break into the industry through summer internships. Karnish Patel is a pharmacy manager at Rite Aid. Socially, we enjoyed various events. Terrence Gardener hosted a chapter barbecue, and Christopher Liddie and Ryan Basa hosted a karaoke party so that our new pledges could get to know the Brothers. Alpha Rho Chapter Mercer University Our latest St. Jude fundraiser was a crush can sale for Valentine’s Day. We sell Orange Crush soda cans for a dollar, which are to be given to a “crush,” a friend, or a teacher on campus, with an anonymous note attached.

After the cans have been distributed, the recipient can then pay a dollar to find out who sent it. We are also selling “Keep Calm and Take the Pills” T-shirts and took part in the St. Jude letter-writing campaign.

Last spring, our pledges volunteered with the Atlanta C.H.O.I.C.E.S. foundation and taught children (from several local schools) and their parents the importance of proper nutrition and exercise.

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, we collected stuffed animals and donated them to the Fulton County EMS to give to injured children who are transported in ambulances. The week of Halloween, we hosted a pumpkin painting party on campus and donated the pumpkins to a local children’s hospital. Throughout the semester, Brothers participate in service learning events with alumni at several local Walgreens stores.

For the past three years, we have had a pledge class that exceeded 25. Five Brothers are currently in Rho Chi Society. Fifteen Brothers received a scholarship based on the strength of their CVs. One Brother is serving

as president of IFC. Four of our Brothers hold president-elect positions in various organizations and Brothers hold 18 other leadership positions in organizations around campus. Thirteen Brothers serve as pharmacy ambassadors and are involved with the selection process of incoming students.

Many PDC Brothers received honors and scholarships at the Honors Luncheon: Justin Lawson and Joanne Nguyen received the Minnie M. Meyer award for maintaining a 4.0 GPA for two consecutive years, while Caitlin Jenkins received the M.A. Chambers award for maintaining a 4.0 throughout her first professional year. Ali Quiraishi was awarded the Jessie Mercer Steward award, and 27 of our Brothers were awarded various scholarships, including the Mercer Phi Delta Chi Scholarship from Dean Jim Bartling—Alpha Rho Alumni, and alumni chapter president was awarded to Alissa Dower.

Alpha Sigma University of Illinois This year, we raised $9,500 for St. Jude Children's Hospital through a 5K Run and Prescription for Hope Letter Campaign.

Brothers continue to volunteer at the Greater Chicago Food Depository and participate in our Oncology Awareness initiatives. Brothers also attended the APhA Annual, ICHP Annual, APhA Midwest Regional Meeting, ASHP Midyear Conference, and Illinois Legislative Day. This past fall, we initated our chapter’s largest pledge class, 58 new members, which brings us to a total of 177 Brothers. With Brotherhood one of our top priorities, we reached out to neighboring chapter, Beta Xi, and had our first interchapter bowling event. For two years in a row, we have won Greek Week against Kappa Psi. This year’s social events include the annual Tiki Tiki party, Haunted Hayride, spring formal, and a ski trip to northern Wisconsin.

Brothers held 61 different executive board positions in organizations throughout the college of pharmacy. Many Brothers held multiple positions and hold executive board positions within our chapter.

The Alpha Sigma Alumni Chapter continues to grow and welcomes those from other chapters who live in the Chicago area. The alumni publication, The Post-Script, has kept alumni aware of the chapter’s events.

Alpha Tau University of Houston In fall 2013, we reached many people through health fairs, tutoring, and volunteer events. Last year, we raised more than $500 for St. Jude Children's Hospital through our Bingo Bash. We also set up a unique event, wherein a handful of Brothers went to a high school pharmacy technician class and taught the proper technique for taking blood pressure and cholesterol screenings.

To encourage good study habits, we have “PCOL and Pancakes” to help the P2 Brothers with their pharmacology studies, and the scholarship chairs help the P1 Brothers with their organs and cells studies. We also set up a Big-Little Study Day, which allows Brothers of all classes to meet and get assistance from their peers. We congratulate seven Brothers who have been inducted into Phi Lambda Sigma and 12 Brothers who have been inducted into Rho Chi .

Alpha Tau initiated 57 new Brothers this spring. We have enjoyed intramurals with teams in basketball, indoor soccer, dodgeball, volleyball, and flag football.

We have established a successful mentoring program that allows alumni to foster 36

Brothers interested in their respective fields, CV/Resume workshops where professionals give their advice to Brothers, and an Alumni Crawfish Broil in April that fosters Brotherhood between our undergraduate and alumni Brothers.

Alpha Phi Chapter Butler University Last semester, the Pro Projects Committee partnered with Faith, Hope, and Love International, an Indianapolis-based service organization, for a community outreach project. In November, Brothers joined together to clean up trash and debris from a neighborhood a few blocks from Butler University. Recently, we have instituted a new Pro Projects policy to promote chapter involvement in pharmacy-related events, such as health screenings and free clinics, as well as non-pharmacy venues, including Gleaners Food Bank of Indianapolis.

We enjoyed quite a number of events this school year, including six chapter dinners at nearby restaurants; planning the alpaca farm visit to Whispering Willows for Founders’ Day 2013; welcoming the new class of 2013 with a cookout and capture the flag; coordinating with Kappa Psi and Lambda Kappa Sigma both on a Skyzone and ice skating trip; and organizing a trip to Russell Farms in October, which includes a hayride, bonfire, corn maze, and s’mores—provided through committee funds.

Our chapter has four Brothers who are currently PGY1 pharmacy practice residents in the greater Indianapolis area. Each of them sent in reports about residencies, including application/interview tips, ASHP Midyear advice, and the greatest benefits/ challenges of residency life. Current P4 Brothers on APPE rotations, as well as P3 Brothers starting to think about post-graduate education opportunities, truly appreciated their help. An electronic update was sent to recent alumni Brothers informing them of chapter events and changes regarding alumni status on the national level.

Last year, 14 percent of our Brothers received scholarships based on exceptional leadership, and several others have received academic scholarships. Five Brothers were selected as Butler University Top 100 Students, and two were selected in the Top 10 Most Outstanding Male Students. 2013 RESPy (Respect, Excellence, and Service in Pharmacy) Award for his service to the Butler University Community Outreach Pharmacy (BUCOP). Our great success with our 2013 Prescription for Hope letter-writing campaign for St. Jude led us to be recognized as one of the top fundraising Phi Delta Chi chapters nationwide.

Alpha Psi Chapter University of the Pacific This year, we promoted kidney health at more than 15 health fairs in Stockton. We worked with our local YMCA to hold the third YMCA-PDC Health Fair, which not only targeted under-served individuals, but also children, ensuring that the next generation is a healthier one. We have also kept busy with Stockton’s Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity, and St. Jude Give Thanks Walk. We also began a new event last March, the Color for Cures 5K Color Run, where Brothers raised more than $1,200 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

On campus, Brothers hold key positions in every pharmacy organization, including APhA-ASP, CSHP, NCPA, AMCP, and ASCP. Brother Tien Tran also created a new committee committed to smoking cessation. Two Brothers were awarded membership into Rho Chi for their dedication to scholarship.

We welcomed 16 new Brothers in spring 2013. We enjoyed numerous Brotherhood events, including a Founders’ Day barbecue, an outdoor movie night, a pumpkin carving competition, a Tahoe retreat, and our annual Hawaiian-themed Bash.

We hosted our annual Tom Stout Thousand Golf Tournament and Dinner, a fundraiser and reunion held in honor of Alpha Psi Alumnus, Tom Stout. Brothers got the chance to participate in homecoming and took third place in the float competition. After 15 years without a football team, the university decided to bring back the much-loved weekend of traditions.

Alpha Omega Chapter Southwest Oklahoma State Univ.

Alpha Omega participated in our annual Agape Health Clinic Fundraising Meal, which raised more than $10,000. The local clinic provides free services (including pharmacy) for patients in need of help.

We had a pledge class of over 20 in fall 2013. One of our major events was a water balloon fight at a local park. Alpha Omega played against the Kappa Psi and Kappa Epsilon Chapters in a game of flag football called the Hygeia Bowl. All the proceeds went to charity.

Brothers attended a leadership development seminar presented by Dr. Michael Lee, Chief of Pharmcy Services at the Indian Claremore Hospital. He discussed the evolution of pharmacy practice and how we can move forward the practice of pharmacy.

Beta Alpha Chapter St. John’s University Beta Alpha Brothers assist with the Drug Take Back program that is held on campus and spend the day with faculty and Drug Enforcement Agency representatives. People of the community return their expired medications and we educate them on proper disposal. Several of the Brothers took a trip to New Jersey and dared the freezing waters of the Atlantic Ocean in the Polar Bear Plunge to raise money for the LADACIN network and cerebral palsy. We sent care packages that included nonperishable goods and drugs to soldiers in Iraq. A few of our Brothers assisted a Catholic foundation to bring medications, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other medical necessities to the Philippines. We received generous donations from drug companies and hospitals to make this trip possible.

We organized a new event this year called the Vascular Valentine, where Brothers helped sixth grade students of St. Nicholas of Tolentine create Valentine’s Day cards and explained to them the importance of heart-healthy living. Every Halloween, we host a Healthy Halloween event in conjunction with Lambda Kappa Sigma, Phi Lambda Sigma, and APhA, where we teach the students of nearby elementary schools the importance of being safe during Halloween and eating healthy instead of indulging in countless sweets. We create a “haunted hallway” as an added chill to entertain the students. We hosted an annual Thanksgiving Feast, with all proceeds going to St. Jude Hospital. This is our yearly bonding event with Lambda Kappa Sigma, where we gather, raise money, and review what we are thankful for. Phi Delta Chi raised over $800, which then resulted in our Worthy Chief

We have had a few main social get togethers, such as the blacklight party where Brothers and other sororities would write on each other with highlighters, a toga party, and a Halloween party with Lambda Kappa Sigma, with prizes for the best costumes.

Anthony Yam and Bejoy Marinara were inducted into Rho Chi. In addition, five of our new Brothers were inducted into Phi Lambda Sigma. Two new Brothers are participating in St. John’s Discover the World program and are studying in Seville, Rome, and Paris.

Beta Beta Chapter University of Louisiana at Monroe In the fall, Brothers volunteered at Grace Place Ministries in Monroe. At Grace Place, we helped serve food to underprivileged and homeless citizens and cleaned up the cafeteria. Brothers also volunteer at the local St. Vincent De Paul Pharmacy. We had several

We have six Brothers in Phi Lambda Sigma and seven in Rho Chi. In January 2014, we initiated nine new Brothers, giving us 42 active Brothers. We, along with members of Kappa Epsilon, won the ULM Co-ed Intramural Championship Football game in November. We held an “End of the Semester” crawfish boil in the spring, as well as several social events in the fall during rush. Several Brothers also made a trip to Shreveport for a day of paintballing.

Beta Gamma Chapter Duquesne University Beta Gamma’s primary project this year was Movember, where we raised awareness of men’s health, specifically prostate cancer.

Throughout November, the Brothers of Beta Gamma grew out their mustaches, sold sausages for “Sausagefest,” and sold custom Movember T-shirts.

In 2013, we were excited to initiate 10 new Brothers. This past semester, we had 12 Brothers make the Dean’s List, and we had our annual Dinner with the Dean in January to celebrate scholastic achievement from the fall semester. We placed 1st at Grand Council in August for the Professional & Service Projects Award for the fourth year in a row.

We teamed up with Lambda Kappa Sigma to form a co-ed soccer team in the fall and our basketball team has played well this spring. Geek Week was a success and we placed first in dodgeball and dominated the trivia competition.

Alumni Brothers Jesse R. Milowicki and Shawn M. Roberts have stayed in the Greater Pittsburgh Area and continue to come to our professional events. Brother Eric Nemec chartered the Gamma Tau Chapter at the Western New England University School of Pharmacy.

Beta Delta Chapter St. Louis College of Pharmacy This past spring semester, we raised several thousand dollars for St. Jude during the Prescription for Hope letter-writing campaign. We also conducted several fundraisers for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri, an organization dedicated to providing committed mentors for underprivileged children. Every year, the St. Louis College of Pharmacy holds a Diabetic-safe Halloween Fair. Our chapter sets up a booth and provides games and rides for participants, along with diabetic-friendly treats.

Our membership has soared to 36 active Brothers, the highest number we have seen in five years. Our Brotherly bond is continually strenghthened through annual events, such as the Gatlinberg Retreat and our sumwww.phideltachi.org

Beta Zeta Chapter Long Island University This year, Beta Zeta participated in several walks, including the St. Jude walk, Alzheimer’s walk, and Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. Attending these events helped us to realize the importance of educating the public and improving the lives of those in need.

Our chapter has maintained an astounding 3.32 overall pharmacy GPA. The recipient of our first Beta Zeta Scholarship, which is awarded to a Brother for his or her continued dedication to academic excellence, was Tanya Zapolskaya, who is an outstanding student and vice-president of Rho Chi. Eight new Brothers were welcomed into our chapter this fall. Ten Brothers attended Grand Council this past August. In September, Beta Zeta and Beta Nu organized another Northeastern Regional Olympics event, where Brothers from several chapters in the Northeast Region competed for the NERO trophy. We celebrated Founders’ Day and had a Pot Luck Dinner for Thanksgiving.

We held an alumni banquet and an Ugly Sweater Party over break. Brothers also organized a ski trip to Vermont.

Beta Theta Chapter South Carolina College of Pharmacy-Columbia

Brothers were in charge of different medication drop-off locations throughout the town.

We also hosted a health screening during a fall festival in Little Rock.

Beta Eta welcomed eight new Brothers this year. In spring 2013, we implemented a point system to reward Brothers for attending social events and service projects, such as our bi-annual trash pickup. Our point system discounts dues in varying amounts, depending on the type and number of events attended, with service events being weighted more heavily than social events.

Leadership and scholarship are things our chapter is very passionate about. Many Brothers hold leadership positions in other pharmacy professional organizations, including APhA-ASP, NCPA, and Rho Chi. We have eight Rho Chi members who help with study groups within our chapter.

The majority of our Brothers received scholarship awards through the UAMS College of Pharmacy Scholarship Program. We also had two members receive APhA-ASP Membership Acheivement Awards at the 2013 Midyear Regional Meeting.

Beta Eta Chapter is active socially. On St. Patrick’s Day 2013, the chapter had a retreat at a cabin on the lake in Hot Springs. Our chapter has developed a very popular yearly tradition of doing a fishing derby along the Arkansas River. At the fishing derby, there is a catfish cookout, as well as a fishing competition. On Halloween, we had a large dressup party that included games, costume competitions, decorations, and food. We hosted a tacky Christmas sweater party, with more games and competitions in December.

Beta Theta came in second place in the City of Columbia in fundraising for the St. Jude 5K in November, raising over $3,000 (more than doubling our goal).

This was our first pledge event as a new chapter. We received a plaque from St. Jude that is now on display in the South Carolina College of Pharmacy student lounge.

Beta Theta was officially reactivated on February 15, when 43 new Brothers were initated. Several Brothers and alumni from other chapters attended. Worthy Chief Counselor Taylor Evans and the rest of the officers worked closely with regional and grand officers throughout the entire pledge process that started in early September. Beta Theta is proud to announce that we are finally Brothers!

Beta Iota Chapter Oregon State University We set up a booth at the College of Pharmacy’s, “Breaking Down the MU”event to promote a healthy lifestyle. Our booth demonstrated that exercise and healthy living can be achieved through fun, easy activities. We made a poster that showcased the similarities between candy and prescription pills in terms of physical appearance. We also had fliers on hand about diabetes.

Our 17 new Brothers this year helped with the chapter’s efforts as soon as they were initiated, participating in our pizza fundraisers, canning for St. Jude Children’s Hospital, and helping with our bake sales.

They were willing to help with updating our chapter’s history and assisting with research.

term, we had a white elephant event. The new Brothers organized an elaborate barbecue to bond with Brothers.

Many Brothers are on the honor roll, maintaining a GPA of at least 3.5. Our chapter’s average GPA is 3.47. Many of our Brothers are active in planning the Apothecary Ball, a College of Pharmacy event, where proceeds go toward student outreach and educational activities.

A Facebook page has been set up to connect with our alumni and to invite them to our events. The Apothecary Ball is one of the best opportunities for alumni and pharmacists associated with Oregon State to come and discover Beta Iota’s current projects.

Beta Kappa Chapter Campbell University The major projects that we participated in this year were Adopt-A-Highway, Prescription for Hope, Habitat for Humanity, Vial of Life, our annual Lasagna Dinner, and Cinderella Project. Our chapter also did weekly recycling for the College of Pharmacy. We participated in the school’s annual Health Fair to educate the community on the proper disposal of medications. We visited a nursing home and interacted with the residents by playing bingo and doing arts and crafts.

Beta Kappa is proud to have several Brothers in Rho Chi and Phi Lambda Sigma. We also have many Brothers who hold leadership roles in other organizations.

Many of our Brothers were recognized at Campbell University’s annual Scholarship Luncheon. Brandon Hill was awarded the Grand President’s Crowning Glory Award at 2013 Grand Council.

In spring 2012, Beta Kappa initiated eight new Brothers and in the fall of 2013, we initiated 19 more. Over the past year, we have had several rush events, such as a bonfire, Red Carpet Affair, and Apothecary Games.

We also had many social events, such as an ice cream social, karaoke, bowling, and dinner at a local Italian restaurant. The fall pledges also planned a Harry Potter-themed social, which was a big hit! Our biggest social event was our Kentucky Derby-themed formal, held at an old Southern Plantation.

Last year, we had our alumni barbecue at the home of Drs. Wade and Paige Brown, where we enjoyed fellowship, played games, and ate some good southern barbecue. We celebrated Founders’ Day with a potluck at Scott Harrell’s house. We also had alumni attend Campbell’s homecoming football game and had an alumni and undergraduate Brother social, where we played apothecary games prior to the game. Beta Lambda Chapter Nova Southeastern University Brothers have presented hand hygeine at a community level, as well as a vaccination presentation at a senior living facility. The chapter also teamed up with SCCP to put on the NBC-6 Health Fair, where we focused on blood pressure, blood glucose, and body mass index screenings. Our philanthropy chair coordinated an event at the Ronald McDonald House to feed families in need.

Our leadership chair held our first “roundtable” event, where 10 alumni spoke about their careers and the journey to get there. Two Brothers were inducted into Rho Chi and four into Phi Lambda Sigma. Four Brothers claimed spots on the Chancellor’s List (top 5%) and 14 made the Dean’s List (top 15%) for their class. Our chapter has been showcased in the university’s newsletter for our efforts with Just Dance (A Dance for Down Syndrome), as well as our fundraising efforts for St. Jude, raising more than $1,000 in the past year.

We inducted our largest pledge class yet, 45 Brothers, in November, and three more Brothers (including two faculty) in February. We participated in Greek Wars against Kappa Psi in March 2013. We held many game nights and dinner outings throughout the year.

Beta Mu Chapter Howard University In September, 2013, we worked to promote safe sex among teens in SE. Washington, D.C.. The activity involved organizing kits for safe sex practices. The kits included condoms, lubricants, and guides on how to properly use the supplies. It is critically important that we education teens, since the prevalence of AIDs in the D.C. area is one of the highest in the country.

We hosted a CV review in October. Twenty-three Brothers, along with 16 prospective Brothers, attended the event. All listened intently as Dr. Etienne and a visiting resident lectured on how to develop an effective CV. Dr. Etienne also conducted an exercise that demonstrated the importance of representing oneself well in a professional setting.

tions. When checking their blood pressure, we made sure to put into practice the various methods for attaining a proper reading that we learned in class. There were also pharmacists who were preceptors at the event. Some of the patients even brought their current medications and were not shy about asking questions.

The chapter enjoyed a night at Buffalo Wild Wings so that Brothers would have the chance to get to know prospective new members. Around 20 students came out.

Beta Xi Chapter Midwestern U. at Downer’s Grove

In January, we welcomed 10 pledges. The ceremony was followed by dinner and the assignment of Bigs and Littles. For fun, Brothers went rock climbing at Sport Rock Climbing Center in Alexandria and had a great time. Most of the Brothers had never experienced rock climbing.

Beta Nu Chapter Rutgers University Beta Nu hosted an event that described the implications of the PPACA on pharmacists and a Financial Literacy event developed for college students. Philanthropically, we spent the last two semesters visiting our Embrace Kids child, Bryanna. We hosted fundraising events, including Shave the Last Dance, to raise money for Embrace Kids and Dance Marathon.

Our Academic Committee has started a Review Session Initiative, where sessions taught by older Brothers have been organized for exams in select courses. Another initiative is the Carebear of the Month award, where Brothers submit the names of those whom they feel helped to encourage and support them in school. www.phideltachi.org

Our chapter set up a blood pressure screening with optional counseling this past spring. Brothers participated in school-hosted events where we educated adults and children about healthy habits.

We ushered in a new class of more than 70 initiates. Brothers helped out during weekly pledge meetings. Despite the large pledge class, the Big-Little pairing resulted in a tightly-knit and motivated group that is enthusiastic about contributing to the future of our chapter. We regularly hold inter-fraternity events with Rho Pi Phi and Kappa Psi, such as field day and basketball. We also held a social with Alpha Sigma to promote cross-chapter relations. Our main social event was the Phi Delta Chi formal, which was held on a boat last year.

The scholarship committee started a shared document for the elective classes and APPE rotations, so that Brothers can provide feedback for future Brothers to look at for guidance. Of our Brothers, 63% are on the Dean’s List, 14% are members of Rho Chi, and 10% are in Phi Lambda Sigma, which accepts 5% from each class. Brothers also place 1st, 2nd, and 4th in our AMCP P&T competition and two Brothers are in the top 10 for APhA’s counseling competition.

Beta Omicron Chapter Texas Southern University For the first time in a long time, the professional pharmacy organizations on campus came together to conduct health screenings for campus students and the general public.

Our chapter was responsible for conducting BMI and blood pressure checks. People were genuinely interested in knowing the state of their health and we were more than happy to counsel them on lifestyle modifica-

Beta Pi Shenandoah University We raised money for St. Jude by holding our 4th Carnival for a Cause. We also raised money and collected canned food for a local charity by hosting a Thanksgiving Dinner.

We cleaned up an area of the highway owned by the school for Adopt-A-Highway.

We hold an annual corn hole tournament to raise money for our scholarship fund. We give a $500 scholarship to a deserving pharmacy student each spring. We had five Brothers inducted into PLS this past fall. We had two Brothers inducted into Rho Chi. In the fall, we had the largest pledge class to date and inducted 30 Brothers this spring. We had two Brothers participate in a Nicaragua trip. We had one Brother accepted into the PhD program at the University of Pittsburgh, and another Brother was accepted into the Doctorate of Medicine program at WVU School of Medicine.

Before school started, we enjoyed a tubing trip. Each fall, we have Greek Olympics, where each fraternity and the P1 class battle for the championship. This year, we won!

For Founders’ Day, we had a potluck at a Brother’s house and watched a movie. The Brothers attended a Washington Nationals game and held a corn hole tournament in the spring.

Beta Rho Chapter Texas Tech University at Amarillo Some of our projects this year included cooking meals for the Ronald McDonald House, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, maintaining our adopted highway, volunteering at a local science competition for middle and high schoolers, volunteering at health fairs, and hosting a casino night to raise money for St. Jude.

Our chapter continues to hold strong representation in our school leadership, and the Phi Lambda Sigma and Rho Chi honor societies. We also improved our academic support network to allow group collaboration on materials via Internet cloud services.

This fall, we initiated 45 new Brothers into our chapter—the largest number in our

history. We again held our annual paintball event with Kappa Psi. We also put on a “Back to School Luau” and a blacklight social.

Our Worthy Alumni Liaison did a complete overhaul of our alumni contact network, we now have more alumni connected than ever before.

Beta Sigma Chapter Midwestern University at Glendale In the fall, our pledges held a two-day event to help organize books for a St. Vincent De Paul Thrift Store in Mesa, Ariz.

Brothers participated in the St. Jude Give Thanks Walk in Los Angeles and Phoenix.

In December, philanthropy chair Tram Le organized a greeting card writing event for the elderly of the DOROT organization. We held our annual St. Jude Casino Night fundraiser, which earned more than $5,000.

In February, the Brothers of Beta Sigma attended Pharmacy Day at the Capitol, where they presented a poster on the economic and societal impact of vaccinations.

This year, seven Brothers were initiated into Rho Chi. We also had three pledges who achieved a 4.0 in their first quarter of pharmacy school, along with many Brothers who have achieved Dean’s List honors.

In October, we welcomed 26 new P1 Brothers to the chapter. In order to foster Brotherhood, “Houses” have been established, organizing our Brothers into groups who can then earn points for attendance and involvement at events. During the fall, the pledges organized a game night at the school’s housing complex and we held a white elephant gift exchange in December.

Beta Tau Chapter University at Buffalo Alumnus Anthony Altieri of Black Rock Pharmacy has stayed involved with our chapter by bringing many Brothers in to work wellness clinics at the pharmacy. Topics range from flu shots to blood pressure screenings and healthy living. These clinics 42

have provided us a great avenue to interact with the community and have an impact on their lives. We once again had success in the annual Basket Raffle; the proceeds of which went to Wings Flights of Hope, a non-profit organization that flies area individuals and their families who are in need of medical procedures. We were able to raise $5,000 for this great organization.

We are proud to have five Brothers inducted into Rho Chi. A total of 10 Brothers are now members, which is 12.5% of our chapter. Three Brothers received scholarships for leadership, involvement, and academics at the annual 2013 UB Golf Tournament. Adam Heiermann was also recognized for his leadership by winning the position of APhA-ASP Regional Delegate. A team of three Brothers (Charlie Hinton, Lindsey Feuz, and Nick Hopwood) finished in the top 10 overall in the NCPA Business Plan Competition, and Justin Lenhard was a member of a team that won the 2013 ACCP Poster Competition. That was far from the only accomplishment for Feuz; he also received the 2013 NCPA Presidential Scholarship, the 2013 Donald Arthur Sr. Entrepreneurial Scholarship in Pharmacy, the UB Alumni Association Alumnae Scholarship, and was selected for a residency at the Buffalo Veterans Affair Medical Center.

This January, after months of planning, we hosted the first Great Lakes Regional Formal at The Hotel Lafayette. There were Brothers from five chapters in attendance, including Beta Tau, Gamma Pi, Gamma Zeta, Beta Zeta, and Alpha Theta.

Alumni Chris Daly and Carolyn Hempel were added to the staff as clinical assistant research professors in pharmacy practice, and they are involved in various classes when called upon. Hempel ('11) just completed her residency in cardiology at the University of Kentucky, and she practices at Buffalo General Hospital, while Daly graduated in 2012 with a PharmD/MBA joint degree and completed a residency at UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in North Carolina.

collaborated with two faculty members to publish, “Bedbugs: A Primer for the HealthSystem Pharmacist.” This is available in the 70th volume of the 2013 American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy.

Beta Upsilon Roseman Univ. of Health Sciences Brother Nightingale Meyou conducted a medical mission in Abanasee, Ghana. Kevin Hoang, Jordan Roseberry, and Nightingale Meyou won first place in the Target Scholarship. Jude Ngang accepted a Novartis fellowship in Cambridge, Mass. Four Brothers were initiated into Phi Lambda Sigma. Nam Nguyen is vice president of Phi Lambda Sigma and Keith Wellman as secretary. Keith Wellman participated and won runner-up in the ACCP Counseling competion.

We enjoyed a Sports Day Brotherhood event, which included playing kickball and volleyball. We organized a school-wide basketball tournament.

Beta Phi Chapter Palm Beach Atlantic University We participated multiple weekends at local pharmacies, showcasing our window display and counseling patients. Our Brothers also participated in two health fairs, one on-campus for undergraduate students and one in the community. Brothers provided health care and counseling to thousands of patients in Honduras, Costa Rica, Uganda, and Bolivia, as well as in Belle Glade, Fla. Three Brothers were inducted into Rho Chi, for a total of nine active Brothers in Rho Chi. Three Brothers were also added to www.phideltachi.org

Phi Lambda Sigma, bringing that total to 12. Beta Phi’s are present within the leadership positions of each class, including several as president and vice president of their respective classes, and they hold numerous leadership positions in professional organizations.

After a successful semester of rushing, we welcomed 20 new Brothers in January 2014. Our social calendar included a flag football game, where the ladies of Phi Delta Chi took on the women of Kappa Psi Fraternity. We also had social nights, where Brothers watched movies, went bowling, or ate dinner as a group.

In April, Beta Phi holds an alumni banquet honoring all alumni and recognizing Brothers who are graduating. Our Worthy Alumni Liaison has worked extremely hard to prepare a monthly newsletter that is sent to the alumni to keep them abreast of Beta Phi Chapter happenings.

Beta Chi Chapter Northeastern University In Spring 2013, we hosted the APPE expo and the Co-op expo so that pharmacy students on campus could find out more about rotations and job opportunities in the North-East Region and beyond. We participated in Relay for Life, the Boston One Fund Flower Sale, and the Hope Lodge. We also had Brothers participate in a few mentoring programs and the St. Jude letter writing campaign for donations. In fall 2013, we hosted the 7th annual Bouve Health Day and administered flu shots, as well as ran a blood drive. We also participated in the UNICEF fundraiser, the Salvation Army Food Drive, and the “Light the Night” cancer walk. In spring 2014, the chapter hosted

yet another APPE expo and participated in the Face AIDS Condom Couture event. In addition to these events, we have regularly set up a “Clean-Up Campus” initiative, where Brothers meet biweekly to pick up any trash around campus.

In spring 2013, Brothers participated in a Lead 360 workshop, which included leadership building and development activities.

Brothers who are members of Phi Lambda Sigma hosted a leadership panel to help the chapter learn, develop, and hone our leadership skills. In fall 2014, we provided group seminars on discovering one’s leadership style. These seminars run once every fall. In spring 2014, we hosted presentations, including stress management techniques and social media etiquette. The chapter has added to the Gold Star Incentive Program that awards Brothers for academic success and leadership. In spring 2014, five Brothers were accepted to Phi Lambda Sigma.

In spring 2013, 18 of the most committed Brothers graduated. It was a bittersweet moment. In fall 2013, we welcomed 10 new Brothers. Several of our recent grads have found jobs, fellowships, and residencies, but those who work around Boston have always found ways to meet with us to catch up.

In spring 2014, we hosted a ping pong tournament and the Fajitas and Ritas dinner. The ping pong tournament was a very exciting event, with all proceeds from the buy-in money going to St. Jude.

Beta Psi Chapter University of Minnesota at Duluth Five years ago, our chapter had 12 members. In 2013, we initiated 28 new Brothers, the largest pledge class in our history.

We have been able to accomplish a lot more with our growth in numbers. We had our first Ashland Health Fair in April. In January 2014, we raised $1,000 to support Special Olympics during the Polar Bear Plunge. We had another great turnout in April 2013 for our Relay For Life event.

We currently have Brothers holding presidential roles in MPSA, Rho Chi, and UMD PharmD. We have six Brothers who are members of Phi Lambda Sigma, which makes up half of all Phi Lambda Sigma members on the Duluth campus.

We are proud of Meena Murugappan for being elected as the APhA-ASP Region 5 regional delegate. We are also proud of our campus’ Operation Heart and Self-Care, which were both coordinated by Beta Psi Chapter Brothers. The projects won awards at the Midwest Regional meeting.

This year, we held many fun social events.

We’ve been holding annual Halloween parties, holiday parties, and our Pub Crawl in the spring. We have many Brothers involved in curling, broomball, and baseball teams, and three Brothers founded an organization called PharmD Fitness.

Beta Omega Chapter excels in leadership and academics, as currently, 32 of the 51 PLS members (62.7%) are chapter Brothers and 30% of Brothers are also in Rho Chi. On February 22, we welcomed 30 Brothers into our chapter. This year, we focused on increasing alumni relations by providing events specifically for them and volunteering at charity events they are involved in.

Recently, chapter Brothers met alumni at a happy hour in downtown Charlotte. We maintain communication with our alumni through monthly emails and our Facebook page. We held our very first off-campus retreat in the mountains of North Carolina.

In addition, we host monthly Brotherhood events (e.g., ice skating, sporting events, trivia night at a local bar, etc.). Our annual Awards Banquet, Founders’ Day celebration and party bus remained our favorite activities.

Beta Omega Chapter proudly finished the 2012–2013 year strong, placing third in the race for the Thurston cup, third for the Grabenstein cup, and placing first in publications.

Gamma Alpha Chapter University of New Mexico Brothers of Gamma Alpha worked with the Poison Prevention Center of New Mexico to promote public awareness about the dangers of prescription drugs. We also sent Brothers to rural pharmacies throughout the state to administer health screenings to residents. We put on several fundraisers for St. Jude Children’s Hospital and participated in the annual St. Jude Walk.

We continue to implement our weekly tutoring sessions, where one Brother per class tutors the other Brothers on their subject of choice. We are also recognized as leaders in the school. We have at least one member of PDC as a class officer in every class. Gamma Alpha Brothers also hold high positions in other organizations, such as PLS and ASHP. This year we congratulated two Brothers on their being inducted into Rho Chi: Ramsie Bradford and Marie Cabrera.

Three Brothers were also inducted into Phi Lambda Sigma.

in 2007. Of the 16 new Brothers, 12 are from the P1 class. As part of their pledging process, the new Brothers completed a professional service project, a social event, and a fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Socially, we started off the year with a pool party and barbecue, followed by our annual Halloween costume party, Thanksgiving dinner, Super Bowl party, hiking social, and dodgeball trampoline! We also had some interfraternal social events: a school-wide dinner event with all the Brothers and a wine and cheese social.

Gamma Beta Chapter Pacific University Brothers provided meals to families at the Ronald McDonald House, and for the second year, we held a CV 101 Workshop that entailed a presentation, followed by a panel of faculty who answered questions.

We currently have a membership of 100 Brothers (including P1, P2, and P3s).

To enhance scholarship, we started a Drug of the Month discussion during our chapter meetings, held a OneNote introductory session, had numerous study sessions between Brothers, and started a program to recognize Brothers who have had scholastic achievements for each of our classes.

The alumni committee has been working to improve connections with Brothers who have graduated. We hosted a cocktail mixer and we are calling and sending out newsletters that feature our activities.

Gamma Delta Chapter East Tennessee State University Gamma Gamma Chapter Appalachian College of Pharmacy In September, Brothers educated a neighborhood watch group on prescription drug abuse and performed health screenings. In October, we educated high school students about prescription drug abuse. In November, we performed health screenings and Medicare Part D counseling at a local pharmacy. During December, Brothers collected more than 150 winter coats that were distributed throughout the community.

Six of the 11 student tutors on campus are from our chapter. Also, two of the three students on the Quality Enhancement Plan Committee that strives to improve academic performance among students are Brothers.

We did three rush events this year: a field day cookout, bowling night, and our traditional Casino night. In November, our chapter welcomed 17 new Brothers. We sponsored several luncheons at our school over the last year, and we participated in the St. Jude Letter Writing Campaign.

Several alumni joined us for our Annual Awards Banquet held this spring at Stateline Bar and Grill.

Our chapter celebrated Vietnamese New Year with a potluck dinner consisting of food from different Asian countries. Brother Harry Nguyen gave a traditional good luck red envelope to all the Brothers. Throughout the year, we celebrated Brothers’ birthdays with potlucks and held an ugly sweater party before Christmas break.

Our chapter focused heavily on service projects this year. Popular fundraisers involved making Candy-Grams to give to patients at the children’s hospital and we donated the money raised to St. Jude. The letter-writing campaign for St. Jude raised more than $2,000. We also participated in the local “Give Thanks.Walk” event. At the Step Out Walk for the American Diabetes Association, Brothers provided blood pressure and blood glucose screenings. We partnered with Aeropostale to collect “Jeans for Teens” and were able to donate more than 80 pairs of jeans to local shelters.

Our professionalism committee worked diligently to provide leadership and scholarship opportunities to our Brothers and other students at BGCOP. We hosted a “Study Tips” Q & A for P1s at the beginning of the school year, and we held a leadership panel, where our older Brothers spoke to new Brothers about getting involved in organizations at the school. We also held study sessions, where older Brothers tutored pledges and younger Brothers.

The night before Initiation, we held a “Brotherhood Night” to allow our pledges to get to know each other and the older Brothers better. It was a huge success, and we can’t wait to have this time of bonding again. Our social committee provided numerous activities to get together and have fun outside of school, including movie nights, a cabin retreat, ski trips, and bonfires. They also held our first-ever alumni reunion.

Gamma Delta was awarded the “Dean’s Achievement in Community Service Award” for the fourth year in a row.

Gamma Epsilon Chapter Texas A&M University Our chapter teamed up with the Vaccinate Texas initiative to raise awareness and educate the community on the significance of being vaccinated each year. We created a Facebook page, where we posted links, statistics, polls, and other media to promote facts and dispel myths about the flu season. In addition, we produced a video “infomercial” promoting the flu vaccine. This proved to be an entertaining way to raise awareness about the flu season. We plan to continue involvement with the Vaccinate Texas initiative in the future. Brothers have been working with the local Boys and Girls Club and have been conducting regular Highway 77 Clean-ups.

Our chapter has continued to support St. Jude Children's Hospital. During the fall semester, we hosted a basketball tournament (“Hoops for Hope”), in which both our campus and the TAMUK campus participated.

We also held a lollipop sale to raise both funds and awareness. We attached a fact sheet about St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to each lollipop to provide those donating with information.

At the Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists meeting in April 2013, the team of Jesse Castillo and Martin Strait won first place in the clinical skills competition. This year, the Texas A&M College of Pharmacy reviewed 106 applications for 10 different scholarships. Five Brothers received scholarships based on their commitment to the pharmacy profession and community. Eight Brothers were invited to join Rho Chi. Currently, Brothers serve as president of the Student Council, SNaPha, SSHP, Rho Chi Society, and the Cultural Diversity Committee. Two Brothers hold president-elect positions in NCPA and SSHP. Phi Delta Chi Brothers are represented on the executive committee of every organization and are planning service-learning activities, such as the upcoming Kleberg Health Fair.

This fall, we had an amazing recruitment season and added 43 new Brothers to our chapter. New and current Brothers grew close through bonding events, including House hangouts, a Thanksgiving social, a Christmas social, and a Battle of the Sexes Valentine social. Members also attended the Founders’ Day celebration in Dallas. The road trip to Dallas was fun, as Brothers carpooled with each other and met new Brothers from other chapters. Brothers from Gamma Nu drove down to help with initiation. The friendships formed was more than anyone could ask for.

Although our chapter is still new, our alumni have started to take roles in the community to promote the pharmaceutical field.

Alex Patlovany is residing in Oklahoma and working as a pharmacist and captain at the local Air Force base. He is the current secretary of the Texas alumni chapter. Michael

Herrera is president of the Texas alumni chapter and he helped put together one of the largest Founders’ Day celebrations our region has had in Dallas. His wife, Stephanie, is also from our chapter. Neha Vora is doing a community care project in the Amarillo region. She is working with the Northwest Texas Hospital to put together a research paper about smoking cessation aids following significant medical events. She is also working with the Texas Tech Pharmacy School as an educator.

We kicked off our social calendar with a game of Mat Ball, a silly and fun twist on kickball, complete with face makeup and matching colors. We divided our chapter into two sides, Old Gold and Dregs of Wine.

We held a bitter-sweet farewell ceremony for our beloved advisor, Dr. Srikanth Kolluru.

Our intramural football team had the championship match against the Kappa Psi team, a matchup that seems to persist year after year. With more than 30 Brothers cheering the team on, we ended the season undefeated and won the championship for the third year in a row. In November, we held a mixer with Kappa Psi, where we simulated minigames from the TV show, Minute to Win It.

Gamma Zeta Chapter St. John Fisher College Recently, Paige Nelson organized a letter writing campaign to the N.Y. State Governor and Senate regarding the opening of another pharmacy school in New York. The campaign was a huge success, as it brought more than a quarter of the Wegmans School of Pharmacy students and faculty together to voice their concerns regarding the project.

This fall, Brothers were busy serving the Rochester community at a health fair at a local church and the 2nd Trick or Eat, in which a significant amount of goods were collected for a food shelter in the area.

We have greatly enhanced our scholastics by creating an “Each Needs” online database for our Brothers to exchange class notes and study guides.

The 2013 school year brought eight new Brothers to our chapter. Each of these Brothers hold officer positions and are very active. We gathered at a local outdoor ice rink, followed by a night of scrapbooking to celebrate another great semester together.

all alumni can be reached. Consequently, we are close with both alumni from our own chapter and Brothers from other chapters who have moved into the area. The company and constant advice each provides is always appreciated by our undergraduate Brothers.

We were the proud recipients of the very first Most Improved Chapter Award at the 2013 Grand Council in Omaha, Neb.

Gamma Eta Chapter Texas Tech University at Abilene This year, we have had the opportunity to volunteer both locally and internationally.

We have begun collecting OTC items for a health care clinic in Haiti, and so far, have received more than 100 items. In the fall, we did glucose screenings and passed out pamphlets during a diabetes awareness health fair at a local grocery. In December, we worked with the Salvation Army to sponsor 60 kids in Abilene with Christmas gifts.

Every month, Gamma Eta selects two faculty and staff members to honor as outstanding supporters of students. The honorees are awarded a “prescription” jar of homemade pill-shaped cookies accompanied by a personal thank you note from a Brother.

Our recipients, as well as other non-Phi Delta Chi students, are always so enthused to see these hard-working people being honored. We developed a new way to help Brothers study and learn new concepts. We established a chapter-wide Dropbox, where Brothers are able to create and share notes and helpful reviews or links to further their knowledge in each class. At each formal meeting, we review the Sigler’s Top 200

drug cards. Different drugs are selected for each meeting, along with a brief assessment and trivia about the most important details for the medication. Brothers have shown their appreciation for the continuing refresher. We sponsored a school-wide luncheon and Halloween costume contest to stimulate creativity within our colleagues and support student unity.

We inducted 17 new undergraduate Brothers, one transferring Brother, and one graduate Brother. This year has been full of new ideas to bring Brothers closer as not only a chapter, but with other Brothers around the country. To get to know the pledges better, we implemented sPeeDC dating, which helped greatly in the pairing of Bigs and Littles. We also got creative at our first Big/Little reveal party and sent the Littles on a scavenger hunt to find out the identity of their Big. Promoting Brotherhood and involvement, we established four houses this year named after the Founding Fathers, with the house earning the most participation points winning the house cup at the end of the year! We have also been reaching out to our Tech Brothers at Beta Rho by attending their initiation, social events, and inviting them to our events.

Our alumni and their contact information are now included in our Dropbox for the chapter, which allows future WALs to update and maintain a current link to all Brothers near and far. We welcomed some of our graduates to initiation.

Seven Brothers were initiated into Phi Lambda Sigma in 2013. We are extremely proud of our alumni Tiffany Johnson, who was appointed the South-Central Regional director of Collegiate Affairs for next year!

We had a Halloween social, with various activities, such as a school-wide costume contest and a booth at the Fall Festival. We had our annual Tacky Christmas Sweater party, with tons of food and a “Dirty Santa” gift exchange. In January, we brought back our Goodwill party, which allowed Brothers to participate in some community service by buying clothes, wearing them to the party, and donating them back.

Gamma Theta Chapter University of Hawaii at Hilo In April 2013, we held our third Miloli’i Health Fair to provide screenings, education, and entertainment for the underserved community. We also continued our Operation Christmas Child project to make Christmas care packages to be sent around the world; our weekly events at New Hope Food Pantry to help package and distribute food to families; and our Everyday Heroes project to provide care packages to local firemen, policemen, and nurses.

Five Brothers were invited to join Rho Chi. Five more became chartering members of our chapter of Phi Lambda Sigma and Brothers Samantha Chang and Walter Domingo will be initiated into the chapter later this year. Lindsey Takara created and posted weekly informational posters in bathroom stalls throughout the campus as an educational tool to promote learning about the Top 200 Drugs. In January, 39 Brothers were initiated. Dr. Forrest Batz was initiated in October as our new clinical advisor.

We were awarded Student Organization of the Year by the College of Pharmacy for exemplary work on campus and in the community. Janine Masri received the Student Leader of the Year award from the DKICP. We participated in our first inter-fraternal sporting event, defeating another pharmacy fraternity in a paintball battle royale. In December, we held our annual Secret Santa night, complete with holiday potluck, awkward childhood picture reveal, and ugly holiday sweater competition.

Gamma Iota Chapter California Northstate We have been focusing on free flu shot clinics and blood pressure screenings this year. Due to the efforts of our advisor, Dr. Frausto, we have been able to set up flu clin48

ics all around Sacramento and have given more than 800 flu shots.

This year, Gamma Iota recruited 20 outstanding new Brothers. For the first time, we had several joint social events with Alpha Psi Chapter, including the St. Jude Cancer Walk and a joint barbecue/social gathering.

We are proud to announce our first official achievements from National. At Grand Council 2013, we received first place in the Prescott Scholarship and attained our first 100% AAP award. Honorable mentions include sixth place in the Thurston Grand President Award.

Our annual chapter retreat was held in a cabin in South Lake Tahoe. It was a funfilled two nights with a Hawaiian-themed white elephant present give-away and awesome home-cooked meals by the Brothers.

Gamma Kappa Chicago State University We had several successful service projects this year, including a Christmas “food raiser” for the elderly patients who attend the Mercy Family Health Center. Many of these patients have outlived their family and friends, and Christmas becomes a very lonely time. We, with the help of other pharmacy organizations, helped to provide food for them, and let them know that someone cares. The goal was to encourage the entire college of pharmacy to donate a number of food items. The event was a great success.

We had several Brothers participate in the chartering of Gamma Sigma Chapter, which was an amazing experience. Rush included our annual luau, informational sessions, and events, including game night, a Halloween costume party/contest, and our Founders’ Day celebration, performed by the pledge class. The pledge class was a good mix of P1s, P2s, and P3s, which contributed to the diversity of our Brotherhood. We welcomed 24 new initiates.

We enjoyed chapter social events, such as game and movie nights. One of our fundraising events was working a concession stand at a Bears’ game with Brothers from Beta Xi and newly founded Gamma Sigma.

We hosted our second Halloween costume party/contest and went out to dinner and had other social activities with Brothers from other chapters in the Chicago area.

Gamma Lambda Auburn University-Mobile Campus Some of our officers and our faculty advisor hosted the Valentine’s Pie fundraiser for St. Jude and supported St. Jude in the 5K walk.

We continue to lead on campus. James P. Polk is the Generation Rx Co director and Phi Lambda Sigma secretary. Brandon Lovett is a charter member of AUHSOP Ambassadors. We initiated four new Brothers in the 2013–2014 year.

Gamma Mu Husson University Gamma Mu hosted a St. Jude letter-writing campaign for the first time last year. We had a phenomenal turn out!

For the second year in a row, we held, along with the School of Business, an interprofessional robbery seminar. The police provided lecture material related to pharmacy safety and what to do in case of a robbery.

We felt this was an excellent opportunity to educate about a serious issue in Maine that is not covered in our academic curriculum.

At Thanksgiving we held a food drive and donated the items to a needy family. On Valentine’s Day, we helped to decorate an assisted-living home and spent time with the residents there.

Seven Brothers were initiated into Phi Lambda Sigma in November. Our chapter initiated 16 new Brothers in March 2014.

We have Friday night spaghetti dinners at least twice a month at a Brother’s home, where we eat and socialize. We hosted a Harvest Masquerade Ball in October, and more than 100 people attended. We also made a shout-out video to send to the Nu Chapter saying congrats.

Gamma Nu University of the Incarnate Word All Brothers took part in assisting HEB with its Immunization Clinics during this flu season. We administered more than 500 shots. In February, Brothers and pledges helped to build a Habitat for Humanity house. Our Brothers are also doing compounding at HEB at the MARC every Saturday from February to April.

We held a Mock OSCE for the PGY2 class on February 22. Jan Yuzon Ramos won the Clarion Case Competition at UIW and will be representing our school at the national competition in Minnesota. Amanda Buhler was inducted into Phi Lambda Sigma. www.phideltachi.org

Our first rush event was a kickball game we called “Kickin’ it with the Bros.” It was played in the rain and was very exciting.

Educating our 15 new pledges began in January and ended in March with a great trip to Baskin Robbins, with more than 40 Brothers and pledges inside a small ice cream shop.

All Active P2 and P3 Brothers attended the Founders’ Day celebration in Dallas this year. Our chapter won the Annual Fraternity Bowl at FSOP.

Gamma Xi Belmont University We hosted a Heart-Health Screening at Kroger this fall, where Brothers screened 54 patients and administered 12 flu vaccinations. We also volunteered at a fall festival at an elementary school and at Project CURE in Nashville, where they sorted medical supplies that were being shipped to Ethiopia.

Forty-three percent of active Brothers made the Dean’s List in fall 2013 and 8% of eligible Brothers were invited to Rho Chi. Our membership drive consisted of the PDC picnic at a local park, a cookout, and a dinner, where we had a water balloon toss, cornhole game, and played flag football.

These events brought much attention to our chapter and helped to bring a larger-thanexpected pledge class.

Our chapter social events included dinners and art shows, star-gazing, and our annual paintball event. As usual, we had strong attendance from our alumni, and we take pride in this. Our paintball event has continued to grow and we hope to make it a recurring facet of our chapter activities.

Gamma Omicron Univ. of Maryland Eastern Shore Our chapter Brothers educated the campus community and general public on the dangers of household poisons and medication safety at the UMES Health Fair. We also

held a “Pennies for Haiti” fundraiser to support a medical mission trip to Haiti. Three Brothers were inducted into Phi Lambda Sigma. The School of Pharmacy awarded the 2012–2013 Highest GPA Award to Ross Jones and Avraham Failaev. .

We welcomed 17 new Brothers over the past two semesters. Our first Halloween bash was a great success. We were fortunate to host visiting Brothers from other chapters, including Iota, Beta Kappa, and Alpha Epsilon throughout the year.

Gamma Pi D’Youville College This was our second year volunteering at the MS walk in Buffalo, N.Y. The MS Society has raised more than $770 million through the walk. Our chapter took part in the decorating and set up, cheered on the walkers, and helped to prepare lunch for the event.

In order to promote scholarship, we rewarded the Brother from each class who had the most improved grade between our first Pharmacotherapeutics test and the second with a $25 gift card. Also, the Brother with the highest grade received a $25 gift card. We plan to develop a reward that will run through the entire semester.

At our first rush, Gamma Pi treated all potential pledges with a fun night at Lasertron. This event was a blast, as pledges got to meet Brothers while playing Laser Tag and racing Go-Karts.

We had our third Thanksgiving ugly sweater potluck dinner. This event is always a lot of fun and fashionable, as Brothers from Gamma Pi, Beta Tau, Gamma Zeta, and potential pledges all bring a dish and enjoy dinner right before Thanksgiving break. This year, those wearing the top three ugliest sweaters received $25 gift cards.

Gamma Rho Regis University In fall 2013, several of us participated in the annual special needs bowling tournament. It was a rewarding experience and everyone looks forward to helping again later this year.

The Gamma Rho leadership committee has spent a lot of time with the Regis University Pre-Pharmacy Club. We held Q&A sessions to help the students understand the path to pharmacy school, whether at Regis or at another school. We also discussed with students what to expect if they chose to attend Regis, as the team-based learning system is quite different from the learning models at other universities. Additionally, several Brothers volunteered to mentor these prospective pharmacy students.

The membership committee set up evenings of karaoke, beach volleyball, bowling, and a game night for rush. They worked hard to ensure that the pledges’ education sessions were as lively as possible, creating a Jeopardy-style game through PowerPoint to prepare them for their initiation exam.

We applaud Lauren Hammond, who earned both the National Community Pharmacists Association Presidential Scholarship, and the Walgreens Diversity Scholarship.

Gamma Rho spent the bulk of the fall 2013 social calendar on rush events and on getting to know potential Brothers. We discovered their musical aptitude during an evening of karaoke. We also found out that no one wanted to play beach volleyball when there was snow on the ground, but everyone still wanted to be in each other’s company.

Gamma Sigma Rosalind Franklin University Our Beta pledge class was initiated in October 2013. Our new chapter is making a mark in the community. Brothers volunteer annually at the TOPCO Super Show in 50

Schaumburg, Ill., offering cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood glucose screenings. We have teamed up with medical and podiatry students at the PADS homeless shelter interprofessional health clinic. We also assembled winter care packages for the residents of the PADS homeless shelter.

We were given the “Outstanding Community Service” award by the school for our service at the PADS shelter soup kitchen.

We volunteered our time by selling concessions at sporting events held at Soldier Field, including the Packers vs. Bears NFL playoff game. Two of our social events were held at Fatman’s Bowling, but we also went to Flanagan’s and Cubby Bear North.

Around Thanksgiving, we divided into bowling teams via committee and competed for the Chwalek Turkey Bowl Trophy.

We held several social/recruitment events and were pleased to welcome 29 new Brothers in March.

In the fall, we hosted a leadership gathering where we invited local pharmacy leaders who also happen to be Brothers to dinner to discuss their particular field of pharmacy and what it takes to become a true leader.

Among our guests were Dr. Drew Silverman (Epsilon) and Dr. Doug Pauly (Beta Phi).

Our chapter almost doubled in size when we initiated 18 new undergraduate Brothers and two graduate Brothers.

were helping our community but it helped us to bond as a chapter.

Our recruitment included a campus-wide Pharmacy Greek Week event with other professional pharmacy fraternities. During the week, we held a meet-and-greet, along with a Phi Delta Chi eye-spy scavenger hunt. We also participated in a sausage fest and won the volleyball tournament. One of the first social events that we held was a “Dip-Off,” where each of us made a dip and potential pledges tasted them and voted on the best dip. Following this mixer, we held a bowling social at a vintage bowling alley in downtown Findlay that was open to those interested in PDC. Alpha Chapter came to Findlay to help induct our 12 new Brothers.

Since our chapter is so new, it is hard to get support from alumni. We took the advice of others and contacted alumni from nearby colleges, including Ohio Northern and The University of Michigan. We were able to gain a vast array of knowledge about the Brotherhood, as well as make valuable connections through that networking.

Our Dean of the College of Pharmacy is retiring this year, so we have planned a breakfast, which includes the entire pharmacy faculty from our school. This will be a great way to gain insight into how to survive in the pharmacy world.

The new Gamma Chi Chapter had 28 Founding Fathers initiated on January 25, 2014. We have six Brothers who are members of Phi Lambda Sigma and five who are members of Rho Chi. Our chapter participated in several health fairs this year, working with local Goodwill stores, as well as AARP and the Convention of African American Churches. These service projects have led us to our current professional project with STEM programs that involve bringing science and math to at-risk children in our area.

We started hosting Wednesday Night Traditions (WTNs). The WNTs are held every other week and usually include a trivia night, a game night/pot luck, bowling, and social dinners.

Gamma Psi Washington State University The Gamma Psi Chapter took part in the Gonzaga SMILES Science Fair, a blank drive for a local teen shelter, a health fair at a local senior living center, and we served dinner to several men living at the Truth Ministries Shelter.

We officially became a chapter with the initiation of 26 Brothers on February 8, 2014. Our two new advisors, John White (Alpha Rho) and Mimi McCellan (Alpha Nu), are doing an excellent job.

Our chapter held our first social event in October. It was a haunted corn maze in Hauser, Idaho, which included a free drivein theatre showing of The Goonies. Our first Founders’ Day was celebrated with a dinner at the Old Spaghetti Factory. Other events included a Christmas party, complete with a white elephant gift exchange.

Gamma Omega Lipscomb University Since founding in 2006, Lipscomb University College of Pharmacy (LUCOP) has been dedicated to service, leadership, and fellowship within the community. Our chapter has followed in these footsteps paralleling the beliefs of LUCOP since the chapter’s initiation fall of 2013. Beginning our chapter of Phi Delta Chi has been an exciting journey. Throughout the process, we participated in multiple service projects, including serving at the Nashville Rescue Mission and Morning Star Sanctuary. It was a humbling experience to be able to help in giving these men, women, and children of Nashville a second chance. We also supported the Lipscomb Dominican Republic mission trip by collecting OTC items for the students and faculty members traveling this past May. We have been fortunate to collaborate with Belmont’s chapter in various projects, including a paintball social in Clarksville.

Other social events we held included a bonfire and a breakfast social with the pledges and faculty brothers.

Our Sweet Cece’s fundraiser was a tasteful success and our “Eat Bread to Raise Dough” campaign at Panera Bread was a twothumbs-up! Customized Lipscomb College of Pharmacy Tumblers were also a big hit for students needing to take coffee on-the-go for those early morning classes.

After a full year of completing the requirements to establish a Phi Delta Chi chapter at LUCOP, we initiated 56 pledges into the Gamma Omega Chapter on April 4, 2014. Initiation took place during the MidAtlantic Regional Conference in Nashville, Tenn., making our chapter the first to be initiated during a regional conference.

We are currently planning new events for the upcoming school year. This August, we plan on sending brothers to the Phi Delta Chi Leadership Development Seminar in Tampa, Fla. We look forward to the opportunity to develop and strengthening our leadership skills.

Gustavo “Gus” Ortega Dr. Gustavo Ramon “Gus” Ortega, (Lambda 1968) passed away suddenly on June 23, 2014. Gus attended the University of Texas in Austin, where he earned his PhD in Medicinal Chemistry in the School of Pharmacy. Dr. Ortega started teaching at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 1975 and taught for 30 years until he retired in 2005. He was a muchloved advisor for Alpha Omega Chapter.

Andrew Stout Andrew Stout, 66, passed away peacefully at home with family by his side after a long battle with prostate cancer in April 2014.

Andrew graduated from the University of Arizona School of Pharmacy in 1974 and worked as a pharmacist in Lodi, Calif., for 10 years. In 1984, he returned to Bakersfield and started Pharm Care, a pharmacist relief service,

Alvin M. Galinsky, Grand President 1978–1981 (additional photos can be found on page 25) Past Grand President Alvin M. Galinsky passed away Nov. 12, 2013. Born Oct. 14, 1931, Alvin joined Phi Delta Chi at Duquesne University. A dedicated teacher, Alvin was a professor of pharmacy at Columbia University and Assistant Dean of Pharmacy at his alma mater. He retired from Duquesne University School of Pharmacy on in 1993. Galinsky served as Grand President from 1978 to 1981, and then as Grand Past President until 1989. Galinsky joined Phi Delt’s national Board of Counsellors in 1992.

To decades of Beta Gamma Brothers, Galinsky is better known as “Doc.” He was initiated as a graduate Brother in 1966, as Beta Gamma #112, after being asked to join Phi Delta Chi by the undergrads. He intentionally chose not to join a Fraternity as an undergraduate, but Galinsky says he admired the professional projects underway at Beta Gamma, including poison-prevention programs and blood-pressure screenings.

On the day of his initiation, the new Brothers’ pins had not yet arrived. Big Brothers gave their own pins to their Little Brothers but, since Galinsky was a graduate Brother, he had no Big Brother. Worthy Chief Counsellor Bill George took off his own pin and gave it to the future Grand President. When the pins finally arrived, George offered to exchange pins, but Galinsky declined, saying he preferred to keep the original, in token of the WCC’s generosity.

In 1972, he joined Fred Fochtman, PhD, as co-Chapter Advisor. Galinsky served in this role until 1982, when he was appointed assistant dean. President Norman Franke appointed him Eastern Regional Director in 1974, a position he held until elected Grand President at the 51st Grand Council (Lake Tahoe, 1978).

He has been personal and professional mentor to many Brothers and other pharmacy students during his more than 30 years at Duquesne. Galinsky advised 36 masters and 3 doctoral students. In the School of Pharmacy; he advised the classes of 1968, 1976, and 1983, as well as Duquesne’s chapter of the Phi Lambda Sigma.

Through Galinsky’s efforts, a U.S. patent for a suppository dosage form for rectal administration of insulin was assigned to Duquesne. He is the author of more than 30 original research papers and has administered more than $500,000 in professional grants during his career.

Galinsky received his formal education at the University of Illinois at Chicago: a BS degree in 1954, a master’s degree in 1957, and a doctorate in pharmaceutical chemistry in 1962. Early in his own career, he was elected to the Rho Chi and Sigma Xi honor societies. His colleagues as graduate students in Chicago included such notable future Fraternity leaders as Dale Doerr, Mel Weinswig, Leroy Salerni, and Bruce Martin.

Reminiscing, Galinsky called 29 August 1978 the highlight of his Fraternal life. On that day, his adopted home of Pittsburgh was selected the site of the 52nd Grand Council, Beta Gamma was named the #1 Chapter in the country for the first time, and he was elected Grand President. He remembers his presidency as a time of improved fiscal management. He also relishes signing in 1981 the Beta Theta Charter at the University of South Carolina, the first Chapter added since 1967. He cited the deaths of four Brothers while students or shortly after graduation (Joel Laughlin, Rich Lebar, Bobby Basta, Rich Donmoyer) as the most poignant experiences.

Warren E. Weaver (Much of the following information was pulled from obit by Ellen Robertson for the Richmond Times-Dispatch)

Warren Eldred Weaver, PhD, 93, of Richmond, Va. passed away on July 10, 2014.

He had a long and fulfilling life and was heralded as a leader in pharmacy education and a man of vision. He received a B.Sc.in pharmacy from the University of Maryland (1942) and a Ph.D. in pharmaceutical chemistry from there in 1947, and served as a master chemist in the U.S. Navy during World War II before moving to Richmond, Va. to teach at the Medical College of Virginia School of Pharmacy.

He served as dean of the school of Pharmacy at MCV from 1956–1981 before retiring and beginning his "second career" as founder, then president, and eventually executive director of the Christian Pharmacists Fellowship International.

Under Warren’s leadership, the MCV School of Pharmacy established a doctoral program, awarding the first degree in 1958. As graduates began to make good in their jobs, the school began to establish a reputation.

“He came (to MCV) at a time when we wanted to change what pharmacists did,” said Dr. William R. Garnett, a retired MCV professor of pharmacy and neurology. “We wanted to get away from the distribu(continued on page 54) which was very successful. SPOTLIGHT Saroyan is selected in recognition of his exceptional leadership and mentorship WASHINGTON, DC – The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) announced Ralph L. Saroyan, Pharm BS, of Stockton, Calif., as the 2014 recipient of the APhA Gloria Niemeyer Francke Leadership Mentor Award. Saroyan was selected in recognition of his exceptional leadership and mentorship throughout his fifty-year career.

The award, named for the noted pharmacy leader and former APhA staff member Gloria Niemeyer Francke, was established in 1993 to recognize an individual who has promoted and encouraged pharma(continued)

Saroyan was officially recognized during the APhA Annual Meeting and Exposition in Orlando, March 28–31, 2014. The APhA awards and honors program is the most comprehensive recognition program in the profession of pharmacy.

A colleague commented, “Ralph is a sterling example of what it means to be a pharmacist leader and mentor. With his enthusiasm for the profession and focus on developing the next generation of leaders, Ralph has fostered the professional and leadership development of student pharmacists and practitioners nationwide.” His work at Pacific, with Phi Delta Chi, and with the Phar-

macy Leadership and Education Institute “has made a positive impact on the lives of so many people.”

Another colleague mentioned, “I have benefited immeasurably by having Ralph as a role model. He didn’t just talk about students being the future of pharmacy; he modeled it in positive ways. He sustained their pipedreams and enthusiasms, which allowed future professionals and leaders to test themselves.

Even if the pipe-dreams didn’t work, Ralph used them as learning opportunities. His success is measured by the hundreds of students who are now innovative practitioners and will become pharmacy’s leaders of tomorrow.”

Saroyan retired from the University of the Pacific in 2002, where he most recently served as Assistant to the Dean and Director of Pacific’s Pre-Health programs. During his faculty years, Ralph taught, advised, and mentored more than 3,000 Pacific students. A dedicated servant leader, he served as Grand President of the Phi Delta Chi Fraternity for eight years and was the inaugural Chairman of the Board for its Foundation. Saroyan’s service has been recognized by his receiving of the Linwood F. Tice Friend of APhA-ASP Award and the California Pharmacist of the Year Award and through his induction into the California Pharmacists Association Hall of Fame.

Dr. Warren Weaver, continued from page 52. tion of products to more patient-centered activity that included patient counseling and monitoring for drug interactions and some physician advising.” As a result, Dr. Weaver implemented one of the first experiential programs in the country, which “became one of the best,” Garnett said.

The idea of working in rotations and applying the knowledge that had been aquired in the classroom was really novel in the late 1960s.

Dr. Weaver worked his way through the University of Maryland School of Medicine by working 16 hours a day in steel mills for 60 cents a day. He earned a doctorate in pharmaceutical chemistry and worked as a master chemist on chemical warfare projects for the Navy during World War II. His daughter, Richmond pediatrician Dr. Julie Fortner, said her father kept a list of MCV pharmacy graduates and where they lived and worked. She recalled going on vacation every summer to conventions of American pharmacists and touring the areas around the conventions.

“My father would plot out our course based on what pharmacies we were going to pass, make detours and drive through little towns,” she said. “He would visit (the former) students whenever he was traveling.”

Alpha Kappa Brothers conducted a continuing education event for pharmacists and technicians. The program had more than 70 attendees and provided 6 hours of ACPE approved credit and raised over $500 for the chapter. Part of the proceeds were donated to St. Jude.
