THANH PHONG DUONG ABOUT ME I am a graduate Landscape Architect at University of Technology Sydney. I was born Vietnam and grew up in Sydney, Australia.

Growing up, I saw the difference in landscape environment in both countries and how much the gap in conditions where I was born and raised. This had lead me to the path and passion towards landscape architecture of how can we design spaces both in private and public comfortably for people to live in and enjoy.

Over the years of my study, I began to search what landscape a bit more and to suit our climate or landscape conditions.

I took an interest creating a space or use remaining spaces of researching strategic and policy making and use of water and ecological infrastracture.

NAME: BACHELOR OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE (HONOURS), UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY SYDNEY (2019 - 2022)

01. LISMORE REZONING ECOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK In 2022, Lismore has been affected by Na Lina Flood event, which caused a massive outburst within Lismore LGA. This comes along with an outdated DCP due to reaction and responses to previous flooding in 2012, which does not anticipate future flood events, until the after affect.

Our idea of a resilience city focuses on the Lismore CBD scale of ecological spatial network with the involvement of natural based system and irrigation systems, with the use zonings to plan out our decision making. This is done through re-evaluating and remanding existing DCP 2012 and LEP 2012 to formalise New Proposal DCP strategies and conditions, in introducing Landscape Guidelines Extension as part of DCP requirements which Lismore communities can live and adapt future flooding. This will be included sub-management such as vegetation and soil management, requirements, and water treatment.

02. ALTERATION OF WATER MOTION WITH ENGINEERING AMALGAMATION The aim of this project is to realter the movement of water, using a mixture of natural and man-made engineer component so it won’t reach to Mogo and flood the town. The key strategies we use to alter the water motion is to divert water pressure and splitting them up so they won’t travel at certain point and increase the water pressure rushing through Mogo with the use of embankments, and the other alternative strategies is to create a series of water barriers which shifts the movement diagonally so it will reduce and spread water. As a result, we are lagging the water time to flow down to other coastal towns.

03. WATER BIRDS WALKING TRAIL The idea of the Narrative walk is expanding the connections between the wildlife and us local, where we come and respect the wildlife, while admiring the view the beautification of water bodies of the lake, which illustrate to the Landscape painting of ‘Sunday Afternoon on the Island of Grande Jatte’ Georges Pierre Seurat and while remind the local residents of late local resident died during his trip, which the lake is named after him, which I believe it will significant meaning the lake alongside the heritage farm adjacent to the lake.

Small water basin in the area with a few birds life where small amount of people sit and watch.

The issues in this area is that there is very less canopies in the area and very less swands and ducks population compare to the northen side SCALE 1:100 AXONOMETRICof the lake. During the walk at the end of Doujon lake, the area is very open, less canopies, people and local bird species. There are very much less life in this area, as there is no interactions, but there’s only a PERSPECTIVE few locals walk here.

ISSUES, OPPORTUNITIES The issue of this are is that although the area provide water basin and creek line which connected to the pervious intervention, as well as quite a few birds life in the area, but not alot of people enter or come to this part of the area as the water is very hidden.

During the walk in the sourthern part of the park, the water is hidden within the green space and there is no people entering the area. Within the green space the area provides large water bodies within the surrounding of trees and creekline connected to the previous area.

04. CONSTRUCTION: ECOLOGICAL WALKWAY HISTORY The ecological wetland project, Green and Golden Bell Frogs Ecological Habitat in Lower Hunter River, Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, investigated the shifts of the landscape’s typological attributes, in creating a more driven approach between wet, semi-wet and dry ecology, with a device of walkable weirs filters and biorention basin which control and detain the release of rain and flood water, thus allows to maintain the water bodies for frogs and migratory bird breeding, while producing a distrubtion of vegetation growth which adapt to shifting of water levels and rehabitating frogs species.

This due to, the response to the unsuitable and unstable landscape conditions where the site’s large open space has been removed andbeen covered in concrete and asphalt for Newcastle’s container terminal, and cargo infrastracture at Kooragang Island’s southern tip and adjacent to the west edge Newcastle coal terminal, as well as heavy rainfall, which floods the area.

PROJECT The project site is located near the edge of the Lower Hunter River where the area has a heavy rainfal which causes flooded in the area.

The area consists with constructed weirs which filters the rainfall water and the remaining water and flows onto the wetlands, which is being marked in blue arrow where frogs inhabitat close to the edge of the water underneath the shrubs hiding is prediators. The red mark demonstrates the highly pedestrain and vehicle access due to the current trains transportation which still continues and that vehicles has the chance of disrupting the endangered frogs species.

05. TEXTUTALISE FOREST: RECONNECTION OF HUMAN TOWARDS NATURE

This project investigates the tacticle experiences in which people journey through the forest and how these tacticle experience encourages adults and children to reconnect with nature and various plant species and that it benefit human’s mental and physical wellbing.

During the COVID pandemic, the world becomes more isolated and disconnected to the natural realm, and that we spend more indoors which place more stress and pressure to the human’s mind and body.

However when human interact with nature and spend more time in a desne forest, this relieve our stress and pressure within us and by touching and breathing through the forest, it boosted and improve our mindset/ mental health and our physical heath, as well as, it calm us down and allow us to feel peacefulness under the dense forest.

Through this project, it explores various texture of plants which encourages humans to fully ineract with plant species and feel immersive within the fores along with different height variations of ground conditions that brings us closer to the canopies

06. ECOLOGICAL SUCCESSION RENDERING MODEL Large amount of heat wave swirling in the sky.

Dead branches and leaves falling to the natural grass from the overgrown fruit tree.

In this event, my model demonstrates new life such as natural grass and soils emerges through the concrete as they cripple away from the surface, as well as counted towards the existing lawn area, as they will be replaced by natural grass which then overruns it. This also includes that the vegetation such as the fruit tree, as it continues to grow overtime, with the support of the soils which occurs during the secondary stages of ecological succession.

07. WATER LEVELS ECOLOGIES Large amounts of open area has been removed and overed wih concrete and asphalt for Newcastle container terminal, as well as for other cargo infrastracture at Kooragang Island’s southern tip. We speculae that the focus site adjacent to the west edge of Newcastle coal terminal will be modified by the Newcastle government into endangered frog habitat; namely the Green and Golden Bell Frog, to offset the reduction in open space.

The focus site has reminants of previous attempts, which were haited due to unstability of site conditions and uncertainity around the construction of another coal terminal on site. With stabilising coal demand, our project eplores how water body permancence and different water levels during dry and wet conditions on the site’s tiered topology creates diverse ecologies suitable as habitats for different species. This is framed by site’s still functioning infrastrcture, intermittently crossed by tiered topology creates diverse ecologies suitble as habitats for different species. Bioretention basins and weirs filter, detain and control the release of rain and flood water, allowing for the maintenance of water bodies for frog and migratory bird breeding, while creating a spectrum of emergent vegetation constantly adapting to shifting water levels. Shifting of land furthers the basins’ capacity for generating these dynamics, and emphasises existing topological features in the landscape, creating yet more dynamic thresholds between wet, semi-wet and dry ecologies.

08. WATERLOO PRECINCT: CULTRUAL SPACE The key opportunities I found was the precinct provided less pedestrain crossing/access and as well multiple intersections, which is concerning to locals as children travel the road without looking and as well as sharestreets which can confuse the users. The proposal develpment of Waterloo precinct aim to design a series green network across the precinct to provide easier and safer access for both pedestrains and cyclists, travelling to and from the Waterloo Metro station, Waterloo park and residences.

By taking adavantge of using the polciies such as ‘Walking Strategies’ ‘Sustainable Greener Streetscape’ and Greener Place, benefits the site as they provided more green, shades, secure from canopies and secure access for the users for all ages from childre to elderly.

In terms of connection of the Waterloo Park, Metro station and residence, the proposal development was bringing two green corridors from the metro station and residnce buildings to have nice, easy and safe acess to Waterloo Park.

CALLAN PARK The one key aims of designing Callan Park is to design a rich aesthetics landscape which allows the experience throughout the park, which includes activities where families and friends to spend quality time with each other and the beautiful scenery of the landscape. On the shore line of the coast, aims to reveal the exotic, colourful species within the landscape and brings forth the inner beauty of the landscape where as the inner side provides shades and rest for families who journey through the landscape endlessly and experiencing the under canopy of the trees around the area.
