BIPoC Counselor Professional Identity Two times a year "Placing significant value on diversity, CACREP requires counseling programs to create and support an inclusive learning community. The CACREP Standards not only call for programs to recruit, employ, and retain a diverse faculty, they also require programs to make systematic efforts to attract, enroll, and retain a diverse student body. Part of examining diversity within the counseling profession involves taking a close look at the individuals who are becoming."

COVID-19 Response What in-person labs/clinical placements/etc. are continuing? The Portland Counseling and Training Center (PCTC), formerly named Individual and Family Matters Clinic (IFM), is continuing to provide training for interns and care of clients. As of Monday, March 30, 2019 our interns began utilizing Telehealth, electronic information, and telecommunication technology to reconnect with clients. Our hope is to conduct therapy over the phone or via video chat to provide much-needed support to our community during this “stay-at-home” time. Additionally, this allows our interns to continue in their learning process with the added benefit of being prepared for any future situations where Telehealth is their only option to maintain contact with clients. We are learning valuable pathways to temporarily transition an in-person practice into a digital practice while creatively maintaining a safe and secure environment for all.

What additional safety measures are being taken in these face-to-face settings (like the use of masks or social distancing, etc.)? For now, PCTC has eliminated face-to-face interactions. However, if an intern must enter the clinic, it has been reorganized to provide separate offices for all interns to reassure physical and social distancing. Clients will still be connected through telecommunications until safety for all has been reestablished. Under careful watch, PCTC will undergo consistent and continuous cleaning of equipment, chairs, desk, doorknobs, and all high touch areas. Pictured, are two out of five counseling rooms that have transitioned to separate offices for each intern. Creating these spaces has made it possible to have two break rooms so that interns may take breaks while maintaining social distancing.

COVID-19 Response What vital service will the students who will graduate in Spring 2021 and go into the workforce be providing, specifically as it relates to the COVID-19 outbreak? The interns at PCTC will be prepared and skilled in conducting teletherapy. They will be able to conduct their practice with appropriate counseling compliance, confidentiality, and competencies while using creativity and advanced therapeutic skills to create a suitable helping environment over phone and video. Their preparedness will allow them to join the force of mental health practitioners who are vitally important to support individuals and families dealing with difficulties due to COVID-19 and related matters. It is expected that mental health professionals will be helping the community through a range of challenges, including the realities of isolation, increased instances of familial and relationship difficulties, and anxiety and distress concerning finances. Under my supervision, the interns who are joining PCTC in May will serve the community in similar ways through their work at the clinic. As the COVID-19 pandemic bears down on our country, it has quickly transformed how many mental health providers practice, as we make swift transitions to telephone and/or video counseling. The process of converting PCTC, a place since its inception in 2007, has been conveyed as a face-toface only, mental health facility, but has now been transformed into a place that offers Telehealth, is a modern-day laborious and essential hands-on development. With social distancing being one of the most effective means of creating safety for student interns and clients, PCTC is dedicated to creating an atmosphere where all clients and especially vulnerable populations can continue to access excellent mental health care at a low cost.
