MEDICAL EXPERTS in Shinfield have been working to validate the effectiveness of coronavirus antibody tests.

On Friday, April 10, Professor Karol Sikora, Chief Medical Officer of Rutherford Health picked up 1,000 antibody tests from Heathrow Airport — imported from South Korea.

And on Tuesday, the first 30 people in the UK were tested for Covid-19 antibodies using a cost-effective test kit.

These were all staff at the Rutherford Cancer Centre, Thames Valley.

Yesterday the tests were rolled out across staff at all four Rutherford Cancer Centres in the UK. The aim is to quickly compile data on Covid-19 immunity, to be sent to Public Health England.

But first, the tests were checked for their accuracy.

Professor Sikora said: “The tests have already been validated in South Korea and Germany.

“They work by having a little bit of the Covid-19 spike protein placed on a dish, and then you pour 10 microlitres — a pin prick — of the patient’s blood on to the dish. The Covid-19 antibodies then recognise and glue themselves to the protein.

“If a line appears, then the patient is immune. But most people don’t show the line.”

Professor Sikora explained that out of 30 staff tested, only two showed positive for the antibodies.

“This means they’ve had it, and they’re immune,” he said.

“And we did three tests. We did a laboratory test, a Chinese kit test and the Korean kit test. � Continued on page 7

Three Tuns crossing: report recommends changes to junction EXCLUSIVE

A PUBLIC consultation into one of the borough’s busiest crossroads will be carried out to see if it can be made safer for pedestrians.

Wokingham Borough Council is pledging to conduct it once the coronavirus pandemic has passed, as part of its plans to improve the Three Tuns junction that straddles the Reading and Wokingham borough borders.

A feasibility study was carried out two years ago, but has recently been released under a freedom of information request.

It had been ordered after cyclist Benjamin Pedley died at the crossroads on Monday, March 20, 2017.

The 26-year-old had a severe traumatic brain injury after colliding with a pedestrian who had been crossing the road.

An inquest in September 2017 saw Mr Pedley’s family raise concerns about the safety of the junction that links Wokingham Road with Wilderness Road and Church Road.

They felt that Wokingham Borough Council should accept total responsibility for the incident.

A report commissioned by Wokingham Borough Council was presented to them in August 2018 and compiled by WSP. It looked at the existing junction layout, traffic flows during morning and evening users, and pedestrians using the crossings across the day.

This site visit took place on Tuesday, January 23, 2018, and saw inspectors use the crossings as well as observing how people made their journeys across the road.

A further section looked at potential pedestrian crossings that could be implemented and their costs.

which need to be changed to directional arrows instead of existing green roundels, to make it easier for motorists to see which way they can turn.

The report also looks at accidents at the junction between November 1, 2014 and October 31, 2017. It notes that there were seven, of which four occurred between 2016 and 2017, and six of them took place on Church Road.

However, when it came to a new crossing, it worried that it “will worsen the operational performance of the junction and increase delay for motorised users”.

It recommended that a signalcontrolled pedestrian crossing facility should be installed on Church Road, with no left turn from Wokingham Road into Church Road.

It warns: “The implementation of this banned turn is likely to see some reassignment traffic along the residential streets of Heath Road and

St Peter’s Road which may prevent this from being considered a viable option”.

As a result, it says that the existing crossing should be converted into a signalised pedestrian crossing, but guardrails couldn’t be considered as the pavement is not wide enough.

It felt that the project, which is estimated to cost just over £41,000, would “involve minor changes to the existing infrastructure at the junction.

“The proposed pedestrian crossing facility at the B3350 Church Road (N) has been positioned inside the junction as much as possible in order to address junction intervisibility constraints and maximise safety for all road users.”

Responding, Cllr Pauline Jorgensen, executive member for highways and transport for Wokingham Borough Council, said: “This is one of the busiest junctions

in the borough and a key access point for our residents in Woodley and Earley as well as being a major transport route into Reading.

“It is congested at peak times which is why it’s high on our list of priorities for relief measures.

“We commissioned a feasibility study to examine the potential to improve the pedestrian crossing and then began gathering data on how motorists, cyclists and pedestrians use the junction and surrounding streets.

“This information is crucial because it will inform new camera and traffic light technology we’re introducing as part of our climate emergency actions.

“Once the current public health crisis is over we’ll discuss with our colleagues in Reading the options raised by the data.

“But before we do anything at the junction, we will, of course, carry out a public consultation.”

Warning over car thefts POLICE are warning residents not to become complacent over the security of their vehicles during the coronavirus pandemic.

They want people to take every precaution to ensure that the contents of a car or van is not seen to be an appealing target for thieves.

Advice includes ensuring that the vehicle is locked while not in use.

For those cars with keyless entry systems, the electronic fob should be kept away from doors and windows. Police also advise keeping these fobs in a security pouch, so thieves cannot scan it and then steal the car.

For vans, they should be emptied of equipment. All tools should be marketed and registered on a website such as www.immobilise.com Other tips include: � Don’t tempt thieves by leaving goods on display. � Trust locks, not luck – always

double check your vehicle is locked. � Keep keys safe - and out of sight. � Perfect parking - if you have a garage, use it or try to park in a welllit location. � Be alarmed – ensure your alarm is active and in working order. � Sat Nav – would you be lost without it? Remove it and wipe the sucker mark off the windscreen. � Number plates can be easily removed, secure them with security screws.

A Thames Valley Police spokesperson said: “Please be vigilant and if you see anything suspicious report it to the police.

Sophia dances her way to a place with The Royal Ballet School EXCLUSIVE

A YOUNG ballet dancer from Wokingham has been accepted into a world-renowned dance school in London.

A MAN from Wiltshire has been charged with three burglaries.

John Paul Thomas, aged 41, of Semington, near Trowbridge, was charged onTuesday, April 7, with one count of aggravated burglary and two counts of burglary in a dwelling.

The charges relate to offences on Tuesday, December 3, 2019 when properties in Portway Close and Sycamore Road in Reading and Hayes Drive in Three Mile Cross were burgled.

During the robbery in Portway Close, the home owner was threatened with a carving fork, and had items of jewellery stolen. However, nobody was injured in any of the robberies.

Thomas was arrested and charged last week.

He appeared at Reading Magistrates’ Court today and was remanded in custody to appear at Reading Crown Court on Monday, May 11.

Accused of thefts LAST week, a man was been charged with three burglaries in Wokingham.

Michael Barter, aged 26, of no fixed abode, was charged on Tuesday, April 4 with three counts of burglary dwelling and two counts of attempted burglary dwelling.

The charges are in connection with multiple incidents that occurred on Saturday, February 29 between midnight and 3am.

Properties in Holmes Crescent, Meadow Road and Oaklands Drive were broken into and items stolen. In Meadow Walk and Meadow Way, entry was attempted but no items were stolen.

Barter has been remanded in custody to appear at Reading Crown Court on Tuesday, October 6.

When Sophia’s not dancing, her Mother says she enjoys staying active: “She loves athletics and swimming and does piano once a week.

“She was selected for the athletics team at St Paul’s and the swim squad at Carnival Pool.

“At the moment, when she’s done with her homework in the morning she’ll play with her Lego.

“Her and her younger brother love their Lego.”

Sophia was due to attend one week of training at the Royal Ballet School’s Spring Intensive training programme. Unfortunately due to the coronavirus this was cancelled, but she is looking forward to the Summer Intensive later in the year.

Eleven-year-old Sophia Hannaford will begin at The Royal Ballet School in September, where she will train full-time taking one of only 12 places.

The talented youngster was chosen out of more than 700 who auditioned, after an extensive audition process consisting of ballet classes, interviews, and an academic class.

Sophia recently made it to the finals for the top three vocational ballet schools in England.

Her love of ballet began when she saw a performance of The Nutcracker in London when she was three.

She then started classes at the Allied School of Dance, where her teacher Melanie Dudman invited her to attend extra coaching for talented students.

Ms Dudman saw promise in Sophia and encouraged her to audition for The Royal Ballet School’s Junior Associate programme.

Two years ago, when she was eight, she was accepted on to this and has trained once a week there ever since. She was one of just over 100 girls from around 1,000 who auditioned.

In addition, Sophia also trains four to five times a week, taught by Olga Semenova at the Masters of Ballet Academy in Chiswick, where she began in 2018.

As well as her training, Sophia has won several festivals, and qualified with two of her solos for the All England National final in the summer of 2017.

She has since danced at Vaganova Ballet Academy in St Petersburg and at the Youth America Grand Prix competition in Paris. She was also selected from hundreds for the squad team to represent England at the Dance World Cup in Italy later this year.

Sophia’s mother, Marina Hannaford, says finding out her daughter had been offered a place at the Royal Ballet was a very special moment.

“You should have been there,” she said. “We were driving on the M4, she was sitting next to me, she had the phone in her hand and you know when you get an email it makes that sound. She read it and she screamed, she said ‘I got in’.

“There was screaming, shouting, laughing, crying. She’s been on a ballet journey. She’s ecstatic, so excited, she can’t wait.”

Sophia, currently at St Paul’s Church of England Junior School in Wokingham, will go into Year 7 and begin boarding at the Royal Ballet Lower School this September.

Alongside her academic classes and dance training, she will have the opportunity to perform in productions at the Royal Opera House, such as The Nutcracker, alongside principal dancers from the ballet company.

The Royal Ballet School is the most prestigious vocational ballet school in the UK and one of the top three in the world.

Mrs Hannaford expressed her pride at Sophia’s achievements: “We will miss her like hell, we’ll only see her on weekends. But I’m so proud of her, it’s been such hard work and she’s sacrificed so much. Training five days a week, she’s missed birthday parties and other things.

“I’m just so happy for her. This has been a

Website UFO-hunters.com allows people to record sightings of strange lights in the heavens.

A Wokingham borough resident said they experienced one such moment on Thursday, March 26.

The sighting started just after 10pm, and they saw a bright light that didn’t move for 40 minutes.

The spotter discounted it being a star or a drone, meaning that it remains unidentified.

They said: “Bright light in sky hasn’t moved for 40 minutes, could be drone but I don’t think so, not a star either. It’s now 2245, can see it from my house so if it’s there at say 1am still that isn’t no stone for sure. I’m convinced it’s something else.”

Police launch online tool to report potential lockdown breaches THAMES VALLEY POLICE has launched an online reporting tool for possible breaches of the coronavirus lockdown.

The page is for people to report something that is said to be a significant issue or a serious breach of the restrictions.

At the current time, people are only allowed to leave their homes for limited reasons, including food shopping, commuting if they cannot work from home, and to have some daily exercise such as a run, walk, or cycle.

Those that do go out should stay 2 metres away from all other people. They are not allowed to meet others including family and friends.

And they should wash their hands as soon as they return to their home.

To help enforce the restrictions, Thames Valley Police has been carrying out roadblocks and spot checks to ensure that people who are on the road are following these guidelines.

Before reporting any possible breaches of these restrictions, residents are asked to check they have read and understood the stay at home guidance.

Anyone completing the form is asked to input the location, the type of incident, whether it is happening now or has happened, and what the nature of the report is.

A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police said: “The Government has said you should only leave the house for one of four reasons: buying food and medicine, exercising once a day, travelling to and from work or a medical need.

“Thames Valley Police recognises that we are living in a time where we are all being fundamentally asked to change the way we go about our daily lives, but the message is clear, everyone must stay at home to help stop the spread of Coronavirus and save lives.”

Vandals ‘with a catapult’ go on wrecking spree around Shinfield EXCLUSIVE

VANDALS have been taking advantage of the coronavirus lockdown by wrecking a trail of destruction over the past week.

In addition to incidents being reported in Sindlesham, where a rubbish bin was burnt down, and Woodley, there has been a spate of attacks in Shinfield, thought to have been caused by a gang with a catapult.

The yobs have smashed the windows of Davis Tate estate agents in School Green, smashed floodlights at Shinfield Tennis Club in Millworth Lane, and caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage to a bus purchased by Shinfield St Mary’s Junior School.

Rocks were thrown at the vehicle, smashing all the windows. It was being refitted so it could be used as a nurture space for pupils when the Chestnut Crescent school reopens.

And to add to the destruction, a car was vandalised in the car park of the Bell and Bottle pub in School Green and nets were damaged at the cricket club.

The incidents took place on Monday, April 6.

Cllr Jim Frewin was furious at the damage to the village.

“Given the current situation this is

even more unacceptable than ever,” he said. “Let’s track these mindless idiots down and ensure justice is done. It is not acceptable behaviour.

“To be blatantly walking around vandalising the village it’s unbelievable.”

He said that a number of residents had been in touch with him to express their horror over the attack.

He urged anyone with information to call police on 101, so that the vandals could be caught.

There has also been outrage on social media.

One said it was disgusting, while another said that people had been walking around with a catapult.

And a third person said: “Mindless criminal damage causes undue stress to all people affected, I feel especially sorry

they sought to target the bus”.

Sue Runciman, the headteacher of St Mary’s, was devastated by the vandalism but had some good news.

She said: “We were very disappointed to return to school last Tuesday to find that the windows of the upper storey of our newlypurchased double-decker bus had been smashed by youths as they made their way along Millworth Lane, presumable as they advanced through the whole village.

“Our PTA has offered to refurbish this bus for us so that children who are feeling vulnerable can have a space that they feel safe in to go to, reading in a corner perhaps, reflecting on some cushions, or talking things over with a friendly adult.

“We had not budgeted for it to be damaged further.

“However, the grandfather of one of our pupils, quite by chance, used to be the director of bus glazing company PSV Glazing, which has

very generously offered to repair this for us at no cost.

“We are so grateful for this – and consider ourselves very fortunate indeed to be living in a community with so few bad apples in it – they never spoil the whole bunch.”

Tony Williams, a coach at the tennis club, said that it is thought ball bearings were fired at the floodlights to break them.

“We think it will cost between £200 and £300 to repair each light.

“It is very disappointing. We’re a small local club set up purely for people in the Shinfield area. We’re not out to make lots of money, just enough to cover our costs.

“This is something else we now have to fund.”

A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police said: “No arrests have been made.

“Anyone with information would be asked to call Thames Valley Police, quoting reference 43200107203.”

Conservative candidate still standing after Grazeley mix-up A PROSPECTIVE candidate in next year’s local elections has decided to stand after all.

Late last month, Conservative Jackie Rance posted on social media that she had decided to step down from the contest for Shinfield South.

Her original decision stemmed over confusion as to whether a 15,000 home plan for Grazeley would go ahead or not.

There had been a post on the Shinfield Conservatives Facebook page indicating that a meeting had been held where the proposals were thrown out – but it had been cancelled due to the coronavirus lockdown.

As a result, she posted on the Spencers Wood community page her decision to step down.

“With heavy heart I will not be continuing in any shape or form,” she said.

But she has since changed

her mind and been persuaded to stay.

She said: “When I realised that a post I had made on social media was not 100% accurate due to a miscommunication from Wokingham Borough Council I was understandably upset and disappointed.

“This was compounded by the host of personal attacks I received in response to this and my subsequent apology that were initiated by Cllr Jim Frewin. Having reflected I have decided that I cannot allow myself to be bullied by social media trolls.

“I will therefore continue to fight for the issues that are most important to local people and remain the Conservative candidate for the Shinfield South Ward.

“The Grazeley development is an important issue for local residents which means any

communications on it need to be timely and accurate.

“The fact that Homes England has not given Wokingham Borough Council the £252 million grant it applied for to make the initial investment into the development coupled with AWE’s extension of the emergency planning zone in the area and the economic impact of the current pandemic raises significant questions about the feasibility, viability or desirability of any development in the ward.

“The council therefore quite rightly need to reconsider the whole local plan and Shinfield South residents need a strong Conservative voice in the Conservative Executive Group that will develop that plan.

“If elected I will be 100% committed to being that voice and making sure we get the best deal for residents.”

Rotary teams up with farm shop to help vulnerable get food supplies EXCLUSIVE

VOLUNTEERS are helping ensure vulnerable residents in the borough’s northern parishes are receiving food deliveries.

Members of the Rotary Club of Maiden Erlegh have teamed up with Hare Hatch Sheeplands to get the packages to customers who can’t get to the popular farm shop during the coronavirus lockdown.

The volunteers are also working on the phones, taking orders and dealing with customer orders that come in via email in a bid to help the overburdened farm shop cope with the additional demand.

The shop has already expanded its opening hours to incorporate a special early morning session for single parents, as well as an hour for keyworkers such as NHS staff.

Andy Dicks said: “We have a lot of loyal, vulnerable customers, some in their 70s.

“We said to them that we’d look after them, take their orders and ensure it would be sent out.”

And what started off as a small, manageable enterprise for the small business soon became something bigger: “We had about 20 customers for the first couple of days, but they told their friends, who told their friends,

and we had nearly 200 now,” Mr Dicks explained.

“We now have a local army of volunteers who are taking these orders to vulnerable people.

“The Rotary Club have been manning phones, taking telephone orders from people who can’t use the internet and doing some voluntary deliveries for us. It’s just become a massive thing.

“There’s a lot of local support. The people in Twyford, Wargrave, Woodley, they’ve all been tremendous. We had 300 offers of volunteer drivers in just one hour.”

It has been a busy time for the

farm shop, which includes a butchers, a greengrocer, and plenty of local produce including beers.

“It’s been crazy,” Mr Dicks said.

But it is the volunteers that have been making a difference.

“They are literally saving lives,” he added. “They are fantastic. We take all reasonable precautions, and they just get on with it.

“The drivers are at the front end of it, taking food to the elderly and vulnerable, to people suffering from cancer.

“We’re determined to do whatever we’ve got to do to look after them as much as we can.”

The club has also taken a box of food to the Royal Berkshire Hospital to thank them for their dedication to patients.

A Rotary spokesperson said: “The RBH staff were really pleased to receive the donation from Hare Hatch Sheeplands; they were especially pleased to have fresh ready to eat fruit from the Farm Shop and appreciated biscuits.”

The club says it has continued in a collaborative approach, working with other local clubs, including Loddon Vale Rotary, to donate and supply stocks to the Woodley Food Bank on a weekly basis, with items sourced from Brakes UK, ASDA and Waitrose. Reading Maiden Erlegh has also supported new club Reading Thames Rotary with their appeal for the RBH Staff Wellbeing and Welfare Centre, where more than 200 members of NHS staff use the centre each day for some respite.

It has also helped Berkshire Women’s Aid, the Wycliffe Baptist Church and The Salvation Army.

Members have also volunteered, by joining the befriending outreach to elderly and isolated community members with the Reading Association for the Blind, Berkshire Vision and the Link Visiting Scheme.

MP stays in bus role MATT RODDA has retained his shadow transport role following the election of Kier Starmer as Labour party leader.

The Reading East MP will continue to speak on issues relating to buses – a perfect fit for the man who used to be a councillor on Reading Borough Council, which owns Reading Buses.

And he has praised his party’s new leader, saying he is “a very impressive man” who will be very effective in the role.

On Saturday, April 4, it was announced that Mr Starmer was to take over from Jeremy Corbyn after winning the Labour party’s election.

Mr Rodda, who has been MP since 2017, served as Shadow Minister for Local Transport in Jeremy Corybn’s team.

“I am delighted to have been reappointed as Shadow Buses Minister and I look forward to serving under Keir Starmer, as the new leader of the Labour Party, and Shadow Transport Secretary Jim McMahon,” he said.

“Buses are a vital public service and it is a privilege to be part of the Shadow Transport Team.”

Ambulance warning SCAMMERS are spreading a false message relating to the ambulance service.

Thames Valley Police is warning residents to be aware of the scam which spreads fake news.

It was first reported by the South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SECAMB).

One Front Door guides 800 self-isolating households across borough to access help EXCLUSIVE

CHARITIES and organisations across the borough are continuing to work together to support the community during the coronavirus crisis.

Over the last three weeks, Citizens Advice have helped more than 800 households through One Front Door, which signposts people in the appropriate direction to get the help they need.

The organisation offers guidance and support on a range of issues from benefit and employment enquiries to food and prescription requests.

Jake Morrison, the charity’s chief executive, is encouraging people to contact Citizens Advice if they are in need: “Don’t be afraid to reach out to us. No one is judging. We want to make sure we get the right level of support to people.”

The charity is beginning to map out their plans to support people when lockdown is lifted, Mr Morrison said: “We’ll be the busiest we’ve been for 80 years during the post-corona recovery period. We need something ready when lockdown is lifted, we need to look at how we can continue providing the support we’ve been giving on an increased demand.”

Volunteer Centre The Wokingham Volunteer Centre is focusing on helping vulnerable people get their prescriptions from pharmacies.

With approximately 55 volunteers across the borough, the organisation is working hard to ensure clients receive their medication as quickly as possible.

Helena Badger, volunteer development coordinator said: “Our volunteers are each doing around one to three drives a week.

“Location-wise some areas are more in need than others, we try and keep volunteers local, to

keep them off the roads as much as possible.”

The centre currently has enough volunteers and are able to respond to demand efficiently, but are aware their service will be required more and more over the next few weeks.

Mrs Badger added: “We’re in a good place as a charity to deal with the number of requests.

“I think it will get busier as people run out of medication. The general trend is that it was busier last week than the week before.”

The service is well received by clients, many of whom have expressed their gratitude.

“We have a couple of clients, one has blood cancer, the other has asthma and breathing difficulties,” said Mrs Badger. “They both said, ‘I don’t know what I’d do without your service, it’s amazing’, and volunteers are pleased to be able to do something, they’re being really helpful, they’re doing all they can.”

The centre is working together with Wokingham Borough Council and reports that most referrals come from Citizens Advice, with some from the council, The Link Visiting Scheme and others through self-referral.

The Link Visiting Scheme The charity is currently running a telephone buddy system offering social support and friendship over the phone, and is encouraging anyone who is feeling lonely to give them a call.

The Link is still experiencing an increase in calls and will need more telephone volunteers in the coming weeks — although DBS checks are required.

Marjie Walker, manager at Link, explained how one community hub service led to a much needed Link referral: “I had a lovely conversation with a lady from Lower Earley who had a food parcel delivered from the distribution hub at St Crispin’s.

Her delivery driver arrived and her washing machine had just flooded. The driver helped her with her food delivery and mopped up the flood, she was so grateful.

“The driver also referred her to The Link as she’d just recently lost someone in her family to Covid-19, so she needed some support.”

The charity is seeking help with its new Goody Bags, introduced to help cheer people up.

The Wellbeing Goody Bags are being put together for vulnerable older people and families who seek support during social isolation. People can support their community by putting together a bag of goodies and treats in supermarket bags for life.

Ms Walker said: “We still need more Goody bags, we’re wanting to support older people in care homes.”

Anyone can nominate someone to receive a goody bag by visiting the Link website.

Donations can be delivered to the Wokingham Borough Community Hub in the outside bins at St Crispins Leisure Centre Monday-Friday 9am-4pm.

They will then be safely distributed.

Suggested donations for older people include hand wash, hand cream, puzzle books, jigsaws, magazines, handwritten notes/letters, colouring books, pencils, hamper style goodies and sweet treats.

And for families: Hamper style goodies, colouring books/pencils, jazzy pens, magazines, drawing paper, sketchbooks, sweet treats, puzzle books, educational books and little games.

Wokingham Community Hub The Wokingham Community Hub has fed 993 people over the last three weeks and has approximately 500 households on their repeat delivery books. Based at St Crispin’s Leisure Centre, London Road, the hub is taking donations of both fresh and non-perishable food, toiletries and other living essentials and delivering them to people unable to leave their homes.

Staff report they are currently running low on washing up liquid, nappies, tinned fruit and vegetables, pasta, rice, gluten free food, dairy free food, hand soap and biscuits. Any food donated must be unopened.

Donations can be left in boxes outside St Crispins Leisure Centre, Monday-Friday between 9am and 3pm.

“And these two people showed positive in all three tests. So these Korean tests are valid.”

But Professor Sikora explained that there are other mechanisms involved when human bodies interact with the virus.

“These two people who are now immune have been working in the building. Both are full time, one an administrator and one a contract cleaner.

“Both have had symptoms and been off work for a week or so in the last month.

“Both are pretty dedicated and sociable and so why are more of our staff not infected.

“At a cancer centre with chemotherapy, radiotherapy and proton therapy mingling is inevitable.

“So the virus has been in the building and staff haven’t been ill.

“So what we are seeing is 28 people have been exposed to the virus but don’t have strong antibodies for it.

“There have to be other immunity mechanisms at play. The average age of staff at our centres is under 30.

There are reports of other immune mechanisms – NK cells, and local cytokines deactivating the virus

without the need for an antibody response in younger people.

“It means that a ‘certificate of immunity’ policy to get people back to work is going to be difficult.”

He also explained that it takes approximately four weeks after infection for antibodies to show.

“If you tested Boris Johnson now for antibodies, he probably wouldn’t have them. But test him in a few weeks and that might change.”

With testing rolled out across all Rutherford Cancer Centres, by Wednesday evening, Professor Sikora held the results for 250 more staff across the country – data he hopes will explain the results further.

He said that once the data has been gathered, it will be sent to Public Health England, Lord Bethell, Minister for Testing and Professor Sir John Bell, Regius Professor of Medicine at the University of Oxford, and Chairman of Office for the Strategic Coordination of Health Research.

From there, he hopes the Government will decide to import more immunity tests for people across the country.

And at $10 (£8) each, this bears a significantly smaller price tag than the staff-dependent lab test.

Last Friday, Professor Karol Sikora, Chief Medical Officer of Rutherford Health picked up 1,000 antibody tests imported from South Korea at Heathrow Airport.

Carnival Pool site to be demolished on Monday to minimise disruption THE DEMOLITION of Carnival Pool and Fitness Centre will begin next week – a month earlier than planned, writes Angela Garwood.

Wokingham Borough Council has brought forward construction work on the site, which will start on Monday, April 20.

Last month the borough council announced that the centre would close in May to allow work to start on the new Carnival complex, featuring a new larger leisure centre and library.

However, the centre is currently closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Demolition work will be carried out on behalf of the council by J Mould, which will adhere to the latest government and Public Health England advice.

Teams working on the project will follow the Construction Leadership Council’s guidelines, which include maintaining the required social distancing. There will also be directions on site access, handwashing and stringent cleaning practices.

It is anticipated that by the summer of 2020, the demolition work will be complete.

Cllr Parry Batth, executive member for environment and leisure, said: “We have made the decision to demolish the Carnival Pool and Fitness Centre now as it will cause less disruption and will ensure that once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted we can continue with this regeneration project at pace.

“The government’s current policy is that construction activity should continue where it can be undertaken in accordance with the Public Health England and industry guidance.

“And I am assured our contractors have in place appropriate measures to ensure they are meeting these requirements.”

Work to build the new facilities is anticipated to begin in the summer.

FROMTHECOURTS � A 54-YEAR-OLD from Grazeley Green has had 10 points added to his licence for drink driving.

Andrew Fisher, from Goodboys Lane, was stopped on Bunces Lane, Burghfield on February 12. A breath test revealed that he had 47 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

He was also fined £80, ordered to pay £85 costs and £32 to victim services. � A YATELEY woman who stole from convenience stores has been given a two-week jail sentence, suspended for 18 months.

Billie-Jo Cole, 23 and from Winton Crescent, must also undertake 35 days’ worth of community service.

She appeared at Reading Magistrates Court on February 27, where she admitted the following offences: � Stealing baby milk worth £20 from the London Road, Wokingham Co-op on January 2 � Stealing a sandwich worth £3 from the same store on January 5 � Stealing baby milk and other items, to an unknown value, from a Co-op in Bracknell on January 24

� On January 3, stole various hair products, to an unknown value, from Boots in Wokingham � Stealing baby milk to an unknown value from a Wokingham Co-op on January 2.

For these offences she was ordered to pay compensation of £20, £85 costs and £122 to victim services.

At the same sitting, Cole – listed for the following offences as having no fixed abode – also pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer on January 25 in Wokingham. For this, she was given a 10-week jail sentence, suspended for 18 months.

She also admitted the following cases: � On June 26 last year, stealing spirits worth £2235.50 from Waitrose in Twyford � On the same day and location, stole spirits worth £228 � On June 28, stole spirits worth £214 from Waitrose in Twyford. � COLE also appeared on Reading Magistrates Court on February 29 to admit to a further string of shoplifting offences, returned before the court two days later for more offences.

She admitted the following offences:

Cases heard in Reading and Slough Magistrates Court in recent weeks

� On February 10, stole food worth £8.08 from a BP garage in Wokingham � On January 16, stole food worth £15.80 from a branch of Sainsbury’s in Wokingham � On February 26, stole baby milk to a value unknown from Boots in Wokingham.

Cole, also known as Billy-Jo Connors, was fined £20 for each offence and ordered to pay compensation at a rate of £5 per week. � A WOODLEY woman has been given an eight-week prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, after being caught drink driving for a third time.

Tanna Jeanette Singh, 40 and from Colemansmoor Road, was stopped on January 28, on Lower Earley Way. A police breath test found that she had 114 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

In addition to the suspended sentence, Singh has been banned from getting behind

the wheel for 52 months – four years and four months.

She must also undertake an alcohol treatment programme for nine months and undertake six days worth of community service.

Singh was ordered to be £85 costs and £122 to victim services. � A WOKINGHAM man who damaged doors at a borough leisure centre has been ordered to pay £100 compensation.

John Drumond Love, 57 and from Frederick Place, pleaded guilty to damaged interior doors and furniture belonging to Places for People. He also admitted using threatening or abusive words or behaviour or disorderly behaviour.

Both offences took place on February 25, and his case was heard at Reading Magsitrates Court on February 27. � A BASINGSTOKE man has pleaded guilty to being in possession of a black handled lock knife in a supermarket car park.

Giancarlo Stancampiano, 39 and from Wilmott Way, was stopped on November 25, in the Asda off Chalfont Way, Lower Earley.

He was given a four-month

jail sentence, suspended for 12 months, and undertake 40 hours of community service.

Stancampiano must also forfeit the knife, which will be destroyed, and pay £122 to victim services. � A WOKINGHAM man has been given a 26-week jail sentence, suspended for 12 months, after biting a man so severely that it caused scarring to the face.

Charlie Thomas Burgess, 23 and from Blagrove Drive, had pleaded not guilty to the assault, which took place in Newbury on September 22, 2018.

Burgess had elected for a summary trial, which was heard by Reading Magistrates Court on February 28, where he was found guilty.

He also pleaded guilty to failing to appear in court on January 22.

He must undertake 80 hours community service, pay £200 compensation, £620 costs and £115 to victim services, at a rate of £20 per week. � A SHINFIELD man pleaded guilty to breaching bail conditions and being in possession of drugs.

Aaron Peter Flynn, 25 and from Anson Crescent, appeared before Reading Magistrates Court on March 2, for several different cases.

Flynn has pleaded guilty to stealing four cans of Stella Artois worth £4.50 from the Co-op in Wokingham’s Market Place and assaulting a man on the same day.

He has been remanded on bail until May 29, for sentencing. He must not visit the Co-op branch or contact directly or indirectly his victim.

In separate offences, Flynn pleaded guilty to being in possession of cannabis on February 29, entering an address for which a closure order had been made, and committing an offence while he was already under a suspended sentence.

For this he was fined a total of £100 and ordered to pay £32 to victim services.

And, on the same day, he admitted breaching the terms of his electronic tag, which had been fitted on February 10, by visiting the address of the closure order.

Flynn’s bail has been revoked and he is in custody until sentencing at Reading Crown Court on June 29.

Small businesses not yet getting government loans

THE British Chambers of Commerce (BCC)+ has said that just 1% of companies who had applied for the Government’s Corona-virus Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CBILS) had been successful – and 7% had received grants.

Bell plays Easter bunny A WOKINGHAM company played Easter bunny last week as they hopped down the M3 to Frimley Park Hospital, writes Daisy Hanson.

In the hopes of thanking NHS staff for their hard work, Bell Integration delivered Easter eggs to the hospital.

A company spokesperson said that because many of their staff were working from home, the chocolate eggs they would normally be given were sitting in the warehouse.

Nick Whittle, the company’s IT lifecycle director came up with the plan to donate the 48 Lindt eggs to Frimley Park Hospital.

And Bell Integration’s social media team reached out to hospitals across the country via social media to try to find a home for the chocolate treats.

In all, 368 eggs were given to NHS staff based near their warehouses and offices.

Wokingham company offers labelling service A WOKINGHAM-based company has launched a new service to aid Covid-19 research.

Prisym ID’s product supports pharmaceutical and clinical trials by simplifying the labelling process.

The company designs label management software for organisations in the life science sector, aiming to reduce risk and costs due to errors.

Its new product, the 360 SaaS solution, installs a system with features such as security controls, data management software, label designs and printing facilities.

The company’s senior vice president of sales, Warren Stacey, said: “With the life science industry working at an exceptional rate to run

It also warns that more than half of the small businesses surveyed have enough reserved for three months, while 6% had already run out of money.

And 37% said that they planned to furlough between 75% and 100% of their workforces by the end of this week.

The results were part of the BCC’s Coronavirus Business Impact Tracker, which serves as a barometer of pandemic’s

impact on businesses and the effectiveness of government support measures. More than 1,000 businesses took part.

With the CBILS, the survey found that the complexity of the application process and a slow or lack of response from the relevant body were cited as reasons for those who were unsuccessful.

It is hoped that the Government’s announcements made at the beginning of the month will see an increase in successful takeups.

The BCC said that 7% of respondents were currently using grants for small businesses, but 14% had been unsuccessful.

When asked about the reasons they were unsuccessful:

� 83% said they did not meet the criteria � 14% said they had a slow or no response from the relevant body � 8% said there was insufficient information or guidance available.

BCC director general Dr Adam Marshall said: “Our latest data shows that many businesses face a cliff-edge scenario, either at the end of this month or over the course of the next quarter.

“We’ve seen a big jump in the number of firms furloughing staff, and many are now starting to apply for access to government loan and grant schemes to keep themselves afloat.

“Our research suggests that support is only starting to reach firms on the ground.

“We are pleased that the Chancellor is listening and responding to our calls to strengthen the existing support.

“Improvements to the CBILS scheme should help more businesses get access to the cash they need over the coming days and weeks.

“This could be the difference between survival and insolvency for many firms.

“It’s vital that governments across the UK continue to work closely with business over the coming days.

“Every minute counts, and governments, local authorities and banks must do everything in their power to ensure support gets to firms on the frontline more quickly.”

Digital screens donated to Royal Berkshire TWO NEW digital information screens have been installed at Royal Berkshire Hospital to show essential information.

Last week, Anthony Costello from Hard Hat Media installed the 4G screens to display information for staff and patients.

Located in two key areas of the hospital, it is hoped the digital information systems will benefit staff, patients and visitors alike.

Currently the screens are displaying vital information about social distancing, visitor information and will be frequently updated with information over the next few weeks.

Steve McManus, CEO of the Royal

Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, said: “These screens are a fantastic way for us to be able to communicate with our staff and community in the hospital, and present a sophisticated way to help us keep everyone up to date.

“They will make a big difference to the trust and we are excited to use them to their full potential, thank you very much Anthony.”

Mr Costello said: “As a national Digital Signage provider we were keen to find a way to help our local hospital and hope that this communication Totem will significantly streamline their communication efforts for staff and patients.”

Leases and Covid-19: How are landlords with commercial tenants affected?

T trials and accelerate the speed at which they come to market, labelling may be something of an afterthought, yet it is

critical to the process.

HE Coronavirus Act 2020 (“the Act”) was given Royal Assent on 25 March 2020.

Under Section 82 of the Act, if your Tenant misses a rent payment during the relevant period (currently defined as 26 March 2020 to 30 June 2020 or such later date that may be specified) due to Covid-19 they will be protected from eviction (normally referred to as forfeiture in the commercial context), should they be unable to pay their rent. Rent is defined in the Act as any sum they are liable to pay under the lease. Under the

Act and during the relevant period, only an express waiver in writing is to be regarded as waiving a right of re-entry or forfeiture, under a relevant business tenancy, for nonpayment of rent.

If a Tenant approaches you to state they will no longer be paying the rent under their lease, it is important to check whether the lease allows for such unilateral variation of terms. The chances are it does not and this will therefore not be acceptable!

However, it is important that if you receive a request from a Tenant you do not ignore it, as

this could be considered acceptance of a variation of terms of the lease. You should seek legal advice as soon as possible in relation to your rights and how best to protect your position.

You may decide to negotiate a temporary change in rental payments as you may consider it is better to receive some rent than take the risk that the Tenant fails completely. Alternatively, you may be willing to consider allowing your Tenant a rent holiday. You will need to consider when and if you will expect the Tenant to pay the rent and whether you require interest to be payable on top at a later date.

There are circumstances where you may require third party consent to any temporary changes. If you have a charge over the property you may need

to liaise with your Lender and obtain their consent to avoid breaching any of your obligations as Borrower. Similarly, if you have taken a lease of the property and subsequently sub-let it, you may need to request your Superior Landlord’s consent as many licences to sublet contain restrictions on the variation of terms or waiving breaches of the sub-lease without prior consent of the Superior Landlord.

If you are concerned, it is important to open a dialogue with your Tenant as soon as possible to try and agree the best solution for both parties and maintain a good relationship going forward.

Council redeploys staff to help Covid-19 response SEVERAL council officers have been redeployed into critical roles in a bid to help the community and tackle pressure from coronavirus.

Wokingham Borough Council said it has identified the key skills of its employees and placed them in positions to support vital voluntary groups, such as Citizens Advice.

Michael Bateman, council project manager, is one of those officers and he said: “I’ve been answering telephone calls and, as expected, there are many from residents whose lives have been affected by the COVID-19 outbreak.

“We are therefore providing a lot of advice and support with queries around food parcel deliveries, collection of prescription medication, employment issues and tenancy disputes.”

Council leader John Halsall said: “Our number-one priority is to help guide local people through what is undoubtedly an incredibly difficult time.

“It is heart-warming to see council employees working alongside many community and voluntary groups in a combined effort to support residents across the borough.”

AFTER her musical idol shaved their head for charity, a Woodley woman was inspired to do the same, and support the NHS in the process.

Gemma Green lost her locks after American singer,

Pink did the same in December.

Ms Green was aiming to raise £250 for the Royal Berkshire Hospital – which would provide enough sets of PPE for one intensive care bed for two days.

On Wednesday, April 8, Ms Green live-streamed the shave on social media in the

hope to raise more money for the hospital.

Her two children helped guide the clippers, to remove all her hair.

Now, she has raised £726 for Royal Berkshire Hospital, tripling her original target.

Speaking to Wokingham.Today, she said: “I’m so happy to have

smashed my fundraising goal.

“I originally aimed for £250 because that meant, if each of my Facebook friends donated a pound, we’d hit the target.

“I’ve already had confirmation that the donations have been sent to the NHS, ready for them to buy more PPE in the coming weeks.”

University’s activity workbooks CHILDREN AND hospital patients are delving into activity workbooks designed by academics to distract from anxiety and ease boredom during the coronavirus lockdown.

Researchers from the University of Reading have worked with medical colleagues and patients at the Royal Berkshire Hospital to create the Writers’ Block workbook.

The activity booklet encourages users to get creative by doodling and writing.

The booklets were originally aimed at adult patients with complex conditions, but have also proven to be effective for residents of prisons across the UK, as well as children currently being homeschooled.

They have been taken up by the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Peterborough Hospital, the Royal United Hospitals Bath, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, and HMPs Bristol, Guy’s Marsh and Erlestoke.

Professor Andrew Mangham, English literature lecturer and co-director of the Centre for Health Humanities at the University of Reading, said: “During these difficult times, activities to distract from worries or pass the time are important for so many, particularly those in hospital or suddenly lacking the structure

of school or normal day-to-day life.

“The workbooks are based on our research that shows being creative and keeping our minds and hands active is hugely beneficial when other activities are taken away.

“It is also a wonderful opportunity for the public to see rare materials in the University’s archives in a fun way.”

The workbooks are based on the concept of a resilience pack, often used in writing therapy groups, and were swiftly produced by Professor Mangham and colleague Dr Katherine Mattacks after the Coronavirus outbreak began in the UK. They contain excerpts from rare books and documents dating back hundreds of years, all held in the University of Reading’s Special Collections.

These include 18th century sketches of creatures to

complete, images from the firstever microscope books and creative writing prompts based on wildlife drawings.

The booklets are an extension of a joint project between the University of Reading and the Royal Berkshire NHS Trust, called Stories of Ageing.

This uses art and stories to support patients in the Elderly Care Ward at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. It trialled the use of artefacts, documents and records from the University’s archives and museums in helping patients with long-term and complex conditions to structure their day, keep their minds active, and pass the time between treatments.

PPE FOCUS: UK rejects six opportunities to join EU procurement schemes

Borough sources PPE supply from private sales and donations EXCLUSIVE

LAST WEEK, the borough council received their supply of PPE from central government. But the supply is not enough, and the council are sourcing PPE through private sellers.

Every day, health and care staff across the borough use 3,928 sets of gloves, aprons and masks.

This equipment is used to protect staff, and the most vulnerable members of the community. It is essential for stopping the transmission of the coronavirus — but there is not enough.

This is not an experience unique to the Wokingham Borough, nationally the shortage is becoming more evident each day.

The national picture On Monday, the Doctors’ Association UK warned that supplies of protective gowns used to safely treat coronavirus patients are no longer available to many doctors in high-risk roles.

This is because gowns and fullface visors were not part of the national pandemic stock, so their delivery has been less reliable than face masks, aprons and gloves.

And concerns have been raised that the shortage of PPE could increase the spread of coronavirus to health and care workers.

This comes as the death toll among doctors and nurses continues to rise across the country.

On Saturday, health secretary, Matt Hancock, said that 19 NHS workers had died.

But Mr Hancock insists the government is unaware of a link between PPE shortages and the deaths of NHS staff.

Earlier this month, the Doctors’ Association UK co-signed a joint statement from Doctors’ Unions.

The statement warned that a lack of PPE “will result in patients becoming infected by health and social care workers. Consequently, and disgracefully, some patients and workers will needlessly die.”

The statement also demanded “that industry is immediately repurposed to produce appropriate PPE in adequate quantities to properly protect staff.

“At the very least this should be long sleeved gowns to cover all clothes, gloves, plastic overshoes, a mask — preferably FFP3, since coughs and sneezes are also aerosol generating events — and eye and face protection for all workers in the community. Critical care workers would need considerably greater protection.

“We demand to know where this equipment is being produced, in what quantities, and when and how it will be delivered to the front line.

“If the government will not give us this information we can only assume that the PPE is not available.”

Sourcing PPE After weeks of pressure on the government to answer questions about the availability of PPE, Dominic Raab, deputising for the prime minister, admitted to national supply problems.

On Monday, he said there is “a competitive market out there” for PPE but did not address the concern that the UK did not join EU efforts to procure enough protective equipment.

On Tuesday, March 24, Downing Street said the country is “making our own efforts” to obtain PPE, and the UK has not joined EU procurement schemes as the UK is not in the EU. But at the beginning of the week, The Guardian revealed that the UK had six opportunities to join EU procurement schemes for PPE between Sunday, February 2 and Wednesday, March 25.

Cllr Clive Jones, deputy leader of the Wokingham Liberal Democrats was frustrated with the national response.

“The real problem is not joining the EU schemes,” he said. “It’s not a decision in the best interests of the population, but an ideological decision.

“They don’t want to be a part of it because it's run by the EU, instead they’ve taken a little England approach.

“And it’s so sad that people will have lost their lives because of this.”

Cllr Jones also condemned the slow response to procure enough PPE for staff across the nation.

“Only this weekend, our Government placed orders for £100 million worth of PPE. But why has it taken so long? Why weren’t they doing this weeks ago and why weren’t they thinking about this back in January?

“I have a colleague in Hong Kong and we were talking this week about the situation in the UK. He couldn’t

understand why it took so long to lockdown in the UK, they started restricting things in January.”

Schools fill the gap Last week, Wokingham.Today reported that Leighton Park school had begun creating and distributing face shields to front line workers.

During this time, the school has established a network of 20 manufacturing partners and has provided 6,000 face shields to 79 organisations at the frontline of the Covid-19 response so far.

This includes eight hospitals and 18 GP surgeries. All of which has been made possible through public donations soaring over £17,000 to help buy appropriate materials.

Council buys more PPE Last week, a concerned resident contacted Cllr Charles Margetts, executive member for health, wellbeing and adult services at WBC about the need to launch a public appeal to boost PPE stocks.

Cllr Margetts responded, explaining: “There is a nationwide shortage of PPE. central government is working hard to try to keep local authorities supplied with PPE however it is flooded with demand.

“Wokingham Borough Council has also been sourcing PPE privately wherever possible to try to build up stocks. We have had to pay over and above normal prices to purchase stock but have done so, as we must keep our staff and our residents safe.

“The government has now raised the requirements for when PPE should be used. We currently get through around 27,500 sets of gloves, aprons and masks a week.

“We also act as a provider of last resort to all the care homes and care providers in the borough. Last weekend we had to bail out two local care providers who had completely run out of PPE. “The peak of the virus is expected to come in the next two weeks and

therefore we made the decision to make the public appeal to boost our stocks to ensure we have enough provision — allowing for the very worst possible eventuality — to provide our staff with the equipment they need to do their jobs safely and with confidence.

“Even though we’ve not been able to get all the PPE we need from central government, we’ve had some success getting it directly from other sources as well as from our public appeal and we thank everyone who’s donated so far. It’s a dynamic situation but we’re tentatively confident we can get what we need as we move through this pandemic.

“We’ve raised this issue with our MPs as well as with central government, and will continue to ask for their help to improve the PPE supply for our staff, our care homes, and our care providers.”

Major public enquiry Cllr Jones explained that once the pandemic has been dealt with, serious questions must be asked about the national response, and decisions made by politicians.

“My feeling is that when this is over and we’ve beaten it, there needs to be a Royal Commission to look at why we weren’t better prepared.

“In 2016 they had a practice run for something like this happening, and they don’t appear to have learnt the lessons or followed the guidance from four years ago.

“It needs to be done by the Royal Commission so that it is very independent of the government.

“We need to understand what went wrong, and what can we do to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”

He explained that he fears there will be a wider-scale, more aggressive pandemic in the future that the country will not be prepared for, unless they learn from the mistakes made over the past months.

NHS staff encourage community to stay vigilant for abuse signs

A VIDEO has been released in the hope to support people and families facing domestic abuse, neglect and violence during the coronavirus lockdown.

Created by NHS Berkshire West CCG, the film has been published due to concerns that referrals into many services supporting vulnerable families have dwindled since the lockdown.

However, domestic abuse services have seen a increase in demand, as couples and families are forced together for very long periods of time self isolating.

At this time, many organisations such as schools, day care centres, children’s centres are operating differently. And this means staff trained to spot cases of abuse are not having their usual close contact with vulnerable people.

The key message of the video is to urge neighbours, friends and other people within communities to keep an eye and an ear out for possible cases of abuse. And if they’re not sure if what they’ve seen or heard is abuse, then to err on the side of caution and report it.

Be Brave, Speak Up features Liz Stead, head of safeguarding children at Berkshire West CCG, and has been made in partnership with the Berkshire West Safeguarding Children Partnership.

Ms Stead said: “Abuse and neglect are often hidden and subsequently identified when skilled workforces in day-to-day roles spot the signs.

“Now everyone is, quite rightly, obeying the Government’s guidance on staying at home, we know it can bring things to a head in a lot of households. People are worried about the virus, there’s uncertainty about employment and having the money to pay the bills and concern about not being able to see extended family and friends.

“Crucial family support networks are somewhat cut off because of isolation and social distancing.

“All this is a melting pot of very heightened emotions and the figures coming out from various agencies suggest a really worrying rise in domestic violence and concerns about hidden child abuse and neglect.

“Our concern is that cases of abuse escalate and go unreported because these trained professionals don’t have the usual access to those at risk.

“This is why we’d like everyone to watch and share the very short video which just gives some quick and easy advice on what to do to protect children, young people and vulnerable adults in our communities.”

The film is also available on the Berkshire West Safeguarding Children Partnership website, along with more information and advice on domestic abuse, emotional health, financial help, coping strategies for new parents, homeschooling and keeping children safe on-line.

Charity warns against sharing viral posts offering coded help EXCLUSIVE

AS DOMESTIC abuse concerns continue to rise across the country, warnings have been made against sharing viral social media posts offering help.

Over the past week, a social media post offering help to people in abusive relationships has gone viral.

The post says: “If you're stuck in isolation with someone abusive, message me asking if I’m still selling my make up. I'll know to keep checking in. Ask specifically about my eyeliner and I'll contact authorities for you.”

There are a range of similar variations also being shared on social media sites.

The post says: “Get copying, don’t let anyone be alone”, but there are concerns the viral nature of the post renders it unhelpful and harmful.

Vickie Robertson, founder of domestic abuse support charity, Kaleidoscopic UK, explained how the viral message can open a victim of domestic abuse up to more harm.

“Makeup is often controlled within an abusive relationship, so messaging someone to buy makeup may cause a problem.”

Ms Robertson explained that she was not allowed to wear makeup by her abuser, and a message like this would have caused huge problems for her, as her texts, messages and social media sites were under constant scrutiny.

She added that the mass sharing of this message is also causing issues.

“As soon as something like this

goes viral, perpetrators also see it.

Now they know makeup and eyeliner are being used as codewords, this could put someone in a really vulnerable position.

“The post has great intentions but if someone wants to help, they should set up a personal codeword.

“They can even set up multiple codewords for the type of help needed. The person offering assistance needs to be able to react quickly to the request, and know whether to call the police, ambulance or both.”

Ms Robertson explained that the best way to set up a code word is through a voice call. The person offering help should allow the

individual to choose a code word personal to them.

It should be something that can be used in a sentence, and will not trigger an aggressive response from their abuser.

“They will know what they can and can’t say. It needs to be a word that won’t cause additional problems.

“And they have to be able to trust that person implicity. The person offering help needs to know their address and respond immediately.”

Ms Robertson said she is pleased to see the post is opening up a conversation about domestic abuse nationally, but warned its application should be avoided.

“The best thing someone can do to get immediate help is call the police on 999 and then enter 55 for the Silent Solution,” said Ms Robertson.

If someone cannot speak on the phone, they can enter 55 and the call taker will sensitively manage the police response.

But police must be able to hear some level of activity on the phone.

Ms Robertson advised at coughing or creating a small noise.

“It's important that people know they’re not alone. The police will still come through your door if you need help. And people are being set up in refuges and even hotels to help get them out of the house.”

Berkshire Women’s Aid desperate for funding support SINCE THE coronavirus lockdown measures began last month, Berkshire Women’s Aid has been inundated with calls for refuge space.

The charity has documented a 50% increase in calls for a space to escape to.

Recently, the government pledged £750 million to charities nationally — including domestic abuse support organisations.

But staff at Berkshire Women’s Aid are concerned because there has been no reassurance that any of these funds will reach their local charity.

Andrea West, chief executive of Berkshire Women’s Aid said: “These lockdown measures, whilst essential to preserve our NHS and save lives, have increased the risk for those experiencing abuse and reduced the opportunities for survivors and their children to access support or escape an abusive home.

“BWA has always relied on the generous support of our communities who fundraise to support our services and we welcome the government statements this week on critical financial support for charities like ours.

“We need to know urgently how these funds will be made available to those of us on the frontline delivering services every day to those survivors who desperately need them.”

As a result, the Reading and Wokingham branch of the Women’s Equality Party is calling on Wokingham Borough Council and Thames Valley Police to take extra measures to protect local women and children trapped in dangerous home environments.

Louise Timlin, branch manager of the Reading and Wokingham Branch of the Women’s Equality Party said: “Nationally, the party is calling for the urgent expansion of Domestic Violence Protection Orders, so that domestic abuse perpetrators can be evicted from their homes for the length of the lockdown period.

“For the 1.6 million women that experience domestic abuse each year, lock down could mean being locked in with their abuser.

“That’s why we need emergency measures and the government funding to be allocated in Berkshire to ensure those being abused have access to safe refuge and support.”

Police advise domestic abuse victims to prepare ahead EXCLUSIVE

POLICE say people should plan and prepare for the worst case scenario as the number of calls to domestic abuse helplines continue to rise during lockdown.

Detective Superintendent Rebecca Mears, Thames Valley Police’s head of public protection, told Wokingham.

Today that the number of people fearing for their safety is increasing as the pressures of social isolation build.

She said: “We believe a significant number of people are feeling like this at the moment.

“They may have fears for their safety but are not in any immediate danger.”

Ms Mears encouraged anyone feeling this way to use domestic abuse support websites as a source of information.

“They can plan and prepare

for the worst case scenario.” she added.

“They can contact the police online and receive help and support remotely. And we can take some safeguarding approaches to help.

“There is a range of resources available on the PCC website and the TVP website, a well as a range of other agencies available for support and advice.”

“Be assured that Thames Valley Police and all local agencies are extremely conscious of this and have put plans in place to support you.

Reach out, whether it be to the police or another agency that is right for you. We can help you.”

During this time, neighbours are being encouraged to keep an eye and an ear out for possible cases of abuse.

“Families, friends, colleagues and neighbours are also encouraged to be vigilant and call the police if they believe domestic abuse is affecting the lives of their loved

ones or of their neighbours.”

“If they know the individual, they may recognise they’ve become withdrawn — and that’s different from being shy — but actually withdrawing from social interactions.

“And they may also have noticeable physical injuries, although these are not always visible.”

She explained that anyone who hears a domestic abuse incident should call 999.

“Neighbours may also hear a domestic abuse incident,” she said. “This is different from an argument, this can include threats of violence and things being thrown.

“If they hear things like this, they should ring the Police on 999 straight away and explain the situation on the phone.”

Ms Mears explained the Police will then work with the caller to coordinate an appropriate response.

Last week, the chief executive of Berkshire Women’s Aid — a charity that provides

accommodation and support for victims and survivors of abuse — told Wokingham.Today that their Wokingham shelter is full.

Andrea West said that their accommodation in Reading is likely to reach capacity in a few days, as they now receive a week’s worth of calls in a day from people seeking help.

But Ms Mears said the Police are working with a range of agencies to find a solution.

While government advice is to stay at home, anyone who is at risk of, or experiencing, domestic abuse, is still able to leave and seek refuge.

“For immediate help, people should call the Police,” she said.

“We have a local resilience forum and we have large, multiagency meetings daily. And we are all putting plans in place if refuges become full. All solutions are being looked at.”

Ms Mears advised anyone caught in a physical situation to read the situation carefully.

She explained that if in danger, they should dial 999,

and if they cannot speak, add 55 on the end.

This is called the Silent Solution, and the call taker will sensitively manage the police response.

She added: “This depends highly on the circumstances, but if they’re being threatened with physical violence, they should do as much as they can to not rile the offender.

“If they’re able to get to the bathroom and lock the door, this can provide an extra barrier between them. And they should do their best to move away from the kitchen, as there are various weapons that can be used in there.”

Ms Mears explained that the victim must act in a way

appropriate to the situation as all incidents of domestic abuse are different.

“It’s about knowing who you’re with and how best to read the situation,” she said.

Foolish to suggest ending lockdown now SIR JOHN REDWOOD has argued, on his blog, that the lockdown should be ended urgently.

He argues that the longer we stay closed, the harder it will be to recover.

“It is time to start to get the UK back to work, whilst protecting the vulnerable and reducing the risks of catching the disease for the rest of us in sensible ways,” he says.

We have to disagree.

The World Health Organisation has pointed out that ending lockdown too early would make it more likely that there would be a second, just as deadly, wave of Covid-19 infections. Until the vaccine is found, or we have a system of mass testing and tracking we will be stuck in this never-ending cycle of infection, die down, infection and die down.

It is telling too that our neighbours in France are keeping their doors shut until at least May 11. It might seem like an age away, but it is the right path.

The current support plans from the chancellor might miss out some groups, but they cover most sections of the country.

As a result, we should be able to bounce back – no doubt the hospitality industry will be the first to benefit as the nation rushes to the pub again.

But any early ending, no matter how tempting, is a foolish notion. Sir John, we think you have this wrong.

Adapting to newness and change

I

like hundreds of others, have been livestreaming the Eucharist every Sunday from St Paul’s Wokingham’s facebook page.

On Palm Sunday, we heard Christ’s assertion, in Luke’s gospel, that “if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”

Last weekend, churches around Wokingham stood empty and silent on Easter Sunday, when in any other year, the Christian world would be gathered together shouting Alleluia in celebration of Christ’s defeat of death and resurrection.

Instead, while I celebrate Easter at home, the bare stones in my garden are suddenly overrun with geraniums and campanula crying out Alleluia in celebration of new birth.

We are all adapting to newness and change – so much so that the word “unprecedented” is beginning, ironically, to sound pretty hackneyed.

On Monday, home schooling starts again for children and my colleagues in the teaching profession. There is no pretending that it will be free from struggle.

Parents will struggle to care for and support their children’s learning, while working from home; children will struggle to uphold the sort of self-discipline which would tax many adults.

I, who have always maintained that education is worth having for its own sake – not just to help pass exams – will struggle to put my money where my mouth is.

I will have to persuade 18-year-olds to practise techniques in calculus, but not necessarily because they will use them when they leave school. They should continue to learn because knowledge is precious and understanding elevates us.

Teaching remotely is an exhausting experience, and I imagine that learning remotely is too. My best advice for anyone involved is to get away from the screens when you can.

If you are lucky enough to have a garden, get in it.

At the very least, get near an open window. Say to the new, green world, “Alleluia, Christ is risen”, and hear the voice of spring reply, “He is risen indeed. Alleluia!”

Now we need to extend transition period I absolutely support the government’s mantra that we will do ‘Whatever It Takes’, which is why I’m supporting Best for Britain’s campaign to extend the Brexit transition period.

It’s not reasonable to expect the government to secure a new free trade deal with the EU, while dealing with a deadly situation on our shores.

Extension gives us time to focus on the pandemic now and work out a deal with Europe later.

We are facing a crisis that transcends traditional politics. Nearly half of Conservative voters agree that transition must be extended in the face of this pandemic according to recent polling by Best for Britain.

NHS England confirmed that the resources, which they put aside for No Deal have already been released to tackle the virus. If we cannot get a comprehensive deal in time, how will we weather the double whammy of No Deal and a global pandemic?

We cannot control the timing of the virus outbreak. But we do have control of our transition timetable. And we can be sure that we did everything in our power to save lives.

Blossoms on the South side of Holt Copse My wife and I have been in "Self-isolation" for two weeks (with no Covid-19 symptoms so far, but not wishing to tempt fate!) because I will be 75 in the next month .

With no known medical problems I am what the Government considers to be "At-risk".

I decided to make use of my "Exercise Allowance" of one hour and go and walk to Holt Copse on the Reading Road, see how the Bluebell plants were getting along, then walk back which should be achievable within the hour.

What I did find was that so far because of long periods of cold weather the plants were in leaf, but not bud or flower.

I walked up towards Wokingham along Reading Road on the left hand side

until I reached the South side of Holt Copse and I noticed that the bushes on the South Side of Holt Copse were in bloom, their white Blossom contrasting with the clear blue skies!

I took a few pictures and returned home within

the allotted hour.

One reason why the bushes on the South Side of Holt Copse are ahead of the bluebells in the interior of Holt Copse is that the bushes are exposed to the heat from the sun (which rises in the east, traverses

Lymphoma Action launches UK wide online support group During these unprecedented times, connecting over social media is one way that people can keep in touch. This is even more important for those who are shielding because of health issues or vulnerability.

Lymphoma Action, the only charity in the UK dedicated to supporting people affected by lymphoma, has launched a closed Facebook group for anyone affected by Hodgkin or non-Hodgkin lymphoma or chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL).

The support group is a great place for people affected by lymphoma to share information and tips about coping with the current situation, as well as thoughts and emotions about their diagnosis.

A

CCORDING to the 2017 Land Registry, one in seven of us live in flats (14%), approximately 9 million people.

This figure increases as high as 43% in London. Flats offer convenience, affordability, minimalist living and are often a popular choice as a first home.

I live in a flat; I moved from Winnersh to Wokingham in 2014, downsizing from a four-bedroom detached house to benefit from the regeneration, a chance to enjoy a thriving town and close proximity to green space.

I have a passion for living simply and balance indoor and outdoor living with important family values such as quality time over possessions.

I’ve managed feelings of anxiety and depressive episodes most of my adult life so routine is exceptionally important to me. Running, exercise, maintaining mental and physical strength and training my body and mind with purpose form the backbone of everything I do.

My fitness journey is well practised and documented, I like nothing better than running a 10K surrounded by the beautiful Berkshire countryside, returning home to a warm shower then walking five minutes for tea and cake.

I also host a weekly Run Talk Run (RTR) group, making running and mental health support less intimidating and more accessible. You might have a feeling that you need somewhere to talk, but you don’t necessarily want to go to a GP or a therapist.

RTR thinks that peer support can help, and running does a lovely job at facilitating those conversations.

Furthermore, within a five-minute walk, there’s the added benefit of my friendly gym when road legs are weary and sore.

Urban living can carry its own sensory overload so I hide from the outside noise, pound a treadmill, listen to a podcast and enjoy a friendly chat with staff.

After being “told off” for over training by an excellent physio, I spend smarter time at the gym and have been expanding my repertoire rather than settling for the comfortable but plateauing relationship with my trusty treadmill.

We find ourselves in unprecedented times, the Covid-19 pandemic has knocked the world on its back and forced us all to take a long hard look at how we live, breathe, exist and move forward.

We look to professions that were once unjustifiably overlooked and rely on them to support the sick and vulnerable.

Quite rightly, our freedom, both indoor and outdoor, becomes restricted, there’s no Gym to visit and exercise is once a day outdoors and within two metres of the nearest stranger. I’m grateful for the life I lead in lots of ways, benefit from a loving and supportive network, but it’s hard to face change and adapt.

We live in a technologically driven world, our ability to communicate is easy and instant and we know as much about each other as we have ever done without the need for conversation.

So it makes sense that connection moves fully online and we witness the birth of ‘at home’ fitness.

Joe Wicks, as an example, welcomes in excess of 500,000 visitors every day for YouTube PE classes and he’s not the only one. The fitness industry is doing a great job in adapting quickly. Ask anyone you know and they are frantically moving furniture, rejigging spare rooms, clearing space and clutter to incorporate jumping jacks and downward dogs into their daily ritual.

But, looking back at the earlier statistics, what if you can’t do that due to space restrictions or simply don’t feel comfortable doing so?

My home life is simple, I like it for that very reason. I live in a two-bedroom flat with my husband and daughter that minimally consists of an open plan living / kitchen area and hallway. We have four separate spaces, two of them bedrooms, and a small communal garden. It would take us 150 laps of the garden to run a 5k (we’ve measured it). We also have the added challenge of a “work from home” strategy to accommodate.

My husband is fortunate to still be working in this challenging time but it’s forced us to adapt our living space and assign our kitchen table the new work desk. When this secondment is due to end is anyone’s guess.

We don’t have space for a home gym, yoga mat or running track.

So, here’s my challenge to the fitness industry; What are you doing to support

us wellbeing warriors who don’t exercise at home? We still conform to our daily outdoor exercise, choosing to run for the good of our mental health.

Would it be a brave step to support us? We usually have a very strong and workable routine, by saying, “You know what, it’s OK! In the words of Her Majesty the Queen, we’ll meet again.”

Give us permission to rest and relax rather than throwing us lots of additional challenges that mean we’re forced to compare our life with others.

Use the time to educate us on healthy lifestyle choices around eating, breathing and stretching that don’t involve a resistance band, furniture removal and a mat.

Does my home have to be my gym?

Surely there's enough change happening right now so can it stay being my home?

I want to keep my sacred space, my safe haven, my comfort blanket. I don’t want to pull it apart and pretend it’s something that it isn’t.

I know that when I can revisit the outside world, embrace my new normal with all of its added benefits, and step once more into my friendly local gym and embrace my Run Talk Run Community, they will be there waiting with open arms, swinging a kettlebell with a newly polished treadmill belt.

Government briefings The Government’s afternoon briefings have continued daily through the week.

We all understand the situation is serious, but if the Secretary of State is to continue to deserve being addressed as “the right honourable”, then he needs to stop dodging key issues such as care homes and NHS casualties.

Credit to our borough Locally, things are in rather better shape and on the streets, Wokingham Borough Council’s services have continued to be very visible - bin collections, grass cutting and street cleaning have all been maintained.

Online, WBC’s social media channel has continued to publish information and has included guides on how to give help and where to get it.

There’s also been appeals for donations especially for personal protective equipment, particularly face masks, for front line staff. If you can help, please drop an email to ppe.appeal@wokingham.gov.uk.

Likewise an appeal for donations (particularly washing powder and bars of

soap this week) to go to the Community Response Hub at St. Crispin’s Leisure Centre, 9am-3pm, Monday to Saturday.

Local Covid-19 support groups Meanwhile, at a Parish and Town level, what’s really taken a giant leap forwards over the last ten days or so has been a sense of community spirit that very, very few of us have ever seen before.

Chatting with organisers of three separate Covid-19 groups (Woodley, Wargrave and Whitegates), they’ve all been bowled over by the level of support they’re being offered.

The groups have formed separate teams to combine their knowledge, skills and contacts in order to find individuals who were willing to help, then to make sure that every street in their chosen area had at least one helper associated with it.

Next was to get ‘Hello Cards’ printed and collected by helpers, so that they in turn could write on them and deliver them to every street in their chosen area.

With helpers putting their name and phone number on each card, sometimes their address, those who got a card and responded commented uniformly how welcome it was to know that they weren’t alone and that there was someone who they could call in case of need.

Longing for The Good Life?

W

ITH the lack of routine and a few Bank Holidays thrown into the equation is it any wonder we don’t know where we are and are constantly wondering if it’s Marble Arch or Tuesday?

However I have now got a new routine and it is working well.

I’m a naturally early riser and so am up and out with the dogs before 6.30am, crossing the road like an undecided pavement dodger so much that my Strava journeys look like I am sewing zigzag and walking not unlike Julie Walters in Acorn Antiques in an effort to dodge anyone coming out of their house or daring to walk down the road doing exactly the same.

When all this is over …

When all this is over, a phrase I dislike but nothing screams in such exasperated tones as when all this is over but I digress, I wonder how we will be when it comes to it?

I have spoken to lots of people and they have got bucket lists and plans which is all very organised. I don’t have a list because quite simply what I am most looking forward to doing is staying inside until everyone has got being back to normal and back in the thick of it out of their system.

That’s possibly the weirdest thing I have ever written but it is indeed true.

Who knows when IT will be but as the time passes between then, now and whenever I have come to realise that while I could never be a full on sloth I have settled into this newness quite well.

For those who aren’t online, a phone call to the helper has proven to be a good alternative because even when the helper can’t give a direct answer, they can contact the wider group on an individual’s behalf thus avoiding discrimination by reason of someone’s digital abilities.

Once working, the social media groups have become a lifeline for basics such as prescriptions, shopping and human contact.

Everyone commented that for shopping it’s important to build trust and not take money or other means of payment in advance. It’s still early days and groups are working out how to make transactions work fairly, honestly and reliably – for the helpers as well as the helped. In the main, this is being done at a personal level using the shop receipt to show the value of the goods purchased.

Payments are sometimes cash, though telephone or online banking are preferred where possible.

With every day seeing a growing number of helpers, many streets now have more than one helper each. In addition, when helpers can share records of who they’ve helped, the group is able to provide continuity if the original helper becomes unavailable later.

Current concerns are varied but include whether someone who needs help isn’t getting it yet. So if you know of

a naturally reclusive neighbour (often elderly), please tell your local Covid-19 group about them and discuss how best to make contact.

Clap for carers Over in Woodley, one of the Community First Responders has taken what used to be his support of the local food bank and (with the help of friends and neighbours) has transformed it into supplying over 5,000 items for the Covid19 support group - well done Ronnie !

What the neighbours said Staying at home is rapidly growing old and for one lady, ten days of social isolation was evident from the self-made video clip that showed her climbing the stairs then lying flat and sliding back down – bumping her head on every step.

Meanwhile, disaster has struck my cat-loving neighbours. Apparently the parrot’s last cry of “walkies” was heard by a local Great Dane. Running in, the exuberant dog knocked the cage over letting the parrot out. Their cat was seen later – chewing on one of the tail feathers.

Telly and reading have been a great distraction and I am now scratching around for things to watch. Liar S2 was disappointing, The Stranger was painful, Penance was ridiculous. I hugely enjoyed The Nest, Flesh & Blood, Gold Digger, The Trouble with Maggie Cole, Bang, London Kills and I will readily admit I devoured Tiger King in two sittings and loved it.

I have listened to Clover Stroud’s My Wild and Sleepless Nights on Audible and loved it, Clover writes so beautifully and her descriptions are so vivid you can imagine you are a bystander and can see everything that is happening (I can also recommend My Wild Other).

Matthew Hall, the creator of Keeping Faith, has written a short story which pre-dates what we all know and love on the telly, with an introduction to the characters – naturally I devoured it.

He has also written The Black Art of Killing which I am starting as soon as I have finished Katie Fforde’s Highland Fling.

Brilliant adaptations This is a very strange time and the way in which people have coped and adapted is quite brilliant.

In an effort to keep in touch with people and not just drop a text, a number of us have been writing letters and sending hard to find provisions like yeast and seeds.

I was sent some Sweet Peas from Wargrave that are also going to take up residence in Wokingham and Calne, meanwhile I have Terry Walton on speed dial and have some seeds for him. This is the kind of community I like and it involves no shopping, so it’s a win-win.

I don’t wish to go entirely back to the 70s and The Good Life, but right now it’s how it seems to be and as much as I miss my travels I am safe, well and at home.

Why the Sheriff needed the kitchen table NORMALLY, it’s a special ceremony where the great and good of Berkshire gather to witness the moment.

But this year’s swearing-in of the royal county’s new High Sheriff was a more intimate – and distant – affair.

Due to the coronavirus, the usual pomp and circumstance for the event was replaced with a less spectacular Zoom Mary Riall, the new High meeting.

Sheriff of Berkshire Mary Riall says she was in her kitchen for the event on Friday, April 3, while Berkshire Bench Chair Chris Juden JP hosted the ceremony over the internet.

The office is the oldest royal appointment, going back to the Norman conquest. Each county in England and Wales has one and the role is now very different from the days when they had to collect revenues and enforce law and order on their patch. It is an independent and non-political role.

Mrs Riall said that her year will be dominated by supporting those helping Berkshire manage the Covid-19 crisis.

She will also attend any Royal visits to the country, support the Crown, High Court judges, and the judiciary.

And the role includes promoting a wide range of voluntary work within their communities, together with encouraging and participating in projects designed to reduce crime.

“I am delighted and honoured to be given the opportunity to serve my home county of Berkshire. I will work as best I can in this time of national crisis to support and honour all those heroically working to meet the needs of everyone in Berkshire and especially our most vulnerable, said Mrs Riall.

“I look forward to carrying out the role of High Sheriff by supporting all those involved in administering justice, law and order in our county as well as the emergency services.

“In addition, my personal focus will be on those working to improve the lives of our most vulnerable young people.”

REGULAR visitors to Wokingham Station may already know of a poetryreading station caller, but for those who have missed out – fear no more.

Tony Knight is a familiar voice for Wokingham commuters, and has long been recognised for his distinctive and cheery announcements.

Bringing his poetry reading to the masses, Mr Knight is now part of a Spread the Joy campaign which launched on Monday, April 6.

Starting last week, and continuing for a month, Mr Knight is working to put a smile on people’s faces through regular YouTube videos.

Launched by advertising agency Flamingo Punk, the campaign involved 10-minute videos to uplift the mind and tackle social isolation.

Company co-founder Amanda Baker noticed that she was missing her daily commute to work from Wokingham Station – and the poetry that came with it.

In a bid to cheer the nation, the Spread the Joy campaign began.

A new poem is being posted at 9am on weekdays.

Ms Baker said: “Since moving to Wokingham a few years back, I can hand on my heart and say that my mornings aren’t that blue anymore because I’m greeted with an uplifting poem or two from a chirpy chap called Tony.

“He is the platform announcer at Wokingham station and has been working there for a good five years now.

“His mission is to make everyone that steps onto that platform, a little bit happier before they get stuck into their busy day.

“The poems he reads have become an integral part of people’s lives at Wokingham. When Tony isn’t there, I actually really care.

“In fact, I miss him. He brings

STAFF at a Finchampstead school have been spreading joy to their pupils, to show they’re all in this together.

Fifty three staff from Gorse Ride Junior and Infant Schools filmed themselves dancing and singing to a popular High School Musical track.

Teacher, Deb Collins said: “Our video was masterminded and put together by one of our fantastic teachers Jo Evans.

“It was a mammoth task and Jo involved everyone from the head teacher to the site controller, including teachers, teaching assistants, SEN mentors, lunchtime controllers, breakfast and after school club assistants and the admin team across both schools.

“The timing was particularly fitting as our site controller Ryan Purser should have been getting married to Emma Gale on that day but they will now have to wait until August.”

Jo Evans explained that breaking the song

“I ended up sending them all the lyrics with their names, and assigned lines to each person,” she said.

“When I first put the idea to a few of my friends at the school, we really liked the song which focuses on togetherness.

“On Saturday we shared it on the school’s social media pages and we’ve had a great response from parents to say they and their children loved it.

“And it was a bit of a cheers to our site controller Ryan and his fiancée Emma as they were meant to be getting married that day.”

Ms Collins added: “We all want to say a huge thank you to Jo for putting this together and also to our lovely families who have inundated us with such kind messages of appreciation.”

National Tea Day’s initiative will send care packages to the lonely, vulnerable and heroic members of our community to combat feelings of isolation.

It aims to host the nation’s biggest virtual tea party this coming Tuesday by using donations to provide gift packs, which include tea, biscuits, cakes, bunting and balloons to Barchester and Audley care homes and Nuffield Health hospitals.

Dog shelters face challenges with lockdown EXCLUSIVE

SHELTERS across the borough are struggling to look after their animals with reduced staff and donations.

Lockdown measures mean people must work from home, but for rescue centres this is impossible, as the animals need constant care.

Brian Johnson, owner of Binfield Dog Rescue, said: “It’s only myself and one volunteer looking after these animals – we’re struggling but have to keep it going”.

His charity mostly takes in vulnerable dogs from council pounds — often Rottweilers and Staffordshire Bull Terriers — and cares for them until they are adopted.

Another shelter — The Dog Trouble Foundation in Wokingham — specialises in rescuing, rehoming and rehabilitating unwanted pups, such as older dogs and those with health conditions and behavioural issues.

It is caring for three of them with a skeleton crew, as most of its staff have been given furlough.

Both shelters are struggling as they cannot home their dogs or take any more in.

weeks from people wanting to give old dogs away, but has seen a dip in the amount of people enquiring to adopt.

However, the opposite was reported by Dog Trouble’s founder, Ms Cottrell, who said: “We have seen an increase in people wanting to have a dog.

“Everyone’s at home, bored and wondering how they can help, so they enquire about adopting or fostering, but we have to think about the long term.

“What happens when they go back to work and have less time to look after a pet?

“It’s a sad time for rescue dogs, and most shelters must be in the same situation as us, struggling to protect the staff and the animals”.

Mr Johnson agreed, adding: “As vets are only open to emergencies right now, we can’t get them microchipped or looked at – it’s hard, we can’t give the dogs the care they deserve without these things”.

Ms Cottrell has taken her services online, making videos on her YouTube channel to help owners train their dogs at home and manage until the restrictions are lifted.

Binfield Dog Rescue relies on donations, but where it is doing well with food, it is struggling to pay the bills.

Both shelters are closed and not accepting volunteers, or applications to adopt and foster.

Bus boss pledges safety READING Buses says it is doing everything it can to ensure the safety of employees and customers by enforcing enhanced precautionary measures, in a bid to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

The bus operator has implemented a number of preventive steps to minimise the risk of the virus being passed on.

This includes advising against travel unless absolutely necessary, following all Public Health guidance, imposing cashless payments and encouraging social distancing once on board.

At its Great Knollys Street depot, the service is maintaining a heightened cleaning regime for their buses.

The company has also swapped as many buses as possible to provide drivers with screens in the driving cab, minimising the chances of the virus being passed between customer and driver.

Seats closest to the drivers have been cordoned off to assist with social distancing.

All drivers have been issued with hand sanitiser for when they are on shift with a refill facility available.

They have also been reminded to wash their hands whenever possible back at the depot.

In addition to the company’s

already stringent cleaning procedures, special attention has been made to ensure that high-contact areas such as poles and bell buttons are given extra attention.

Messages from Public Health England are being reinforced and the company is using its website, social media and on-board bus screens and posters, to remind customers of good practice.

Robert Williams, Reading Buses’ chief executive officer, said: “We are doing all we can in this current situation to help keep both our employees and our customers safe and healthy so that we can continue to provide services for essential journeys.

“First and foremost we are advising customers not to travel if they don’t feel well and only to travel if necessary.”

He added: “We are encouraging customers to use cashless payments on the bus.

They can pay by contactless bankcard, mobile app or with smartcard – and those paying cash will need exact change as all buses on the road have ‘hoppers’ that the fare must be dropped into.

“In keeping with Public

Health England’s guidelines, we are also asking customers to wash their hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and warm water before leaving to get the bus – and to do the same when they arrive at their destination.”

As with all public spaces, Reading buses are implementing social distancing.

Mr Williams said: “When waiting for the bus we are advising that customers should try and maintain the two-metre social distancing space and board the bus one at a time.

“Once onboard customers are asked to try and space themselves out where they can, although we know that this won’t always be possible.

“If you have to cough or sneeze, do so hygienically using a tissue, disposing of them after leaving the bus. If you don’t have a tissue, use the crook of your arm as per the Public Health England guidance.”

He added: “If everyone follows the current guidance we know we can limit the spread of the virus as well as continuing to provide a service for all, ensuring all our wonderful employees and customers stay safe.”

Children’s residential home gets outstanding rating from Ofsted EXCLUSIVE

A CHILDREN’S home in Wokingham has been rated as outstanding by Ofsted following a recent visit.

Pondview had a full inspection on February 26 and 27, has been acknowledged for its “highly effective services that consistently exceed the standards of good”.

Parent company Calcot Services for Children is celebrating their 30th year as a provider of care and education services for vulnerable children and their families: It now has had three homes rated as Outstanding across Wokingham and West Berkshire since January.

The Ofsted report acknowledges the success of Pondview and the positive impact it is having on children’s lives. It also praises the home’s “passionate and committed” manager, Karen Hatch for her excellent practice and exceptional management style.

Rachel Redgwell, managing director of Calcot Services for Children, was delighted with the latest report.

She said: “We are exceptionally proud of the achievement and progress Pondview have made to be graded as Outstanding by Ofsted in the most recent inspection.

Redwood calls for lockdown end ONE of the borough’s four MPs has launched an urgent appeal to start lifting lockdown restrictions.

Sir John Redwood has written to the Government, urging them to review the current policy – despite the World Health Organisation warning over the weekend that making changes too early could spark a “deadly resurgence” in the coronavirus.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said: “The way down can be as dangerous as the way up if not managed properly”.

But Sir John said: “It is urgent to start lifting restrictions.

Many more people will lose their jobs if the lockdown continues”.

He warned that selfemployed people and small businesses are struggling and that there had to be limits on Government support.

“An advanced society needs substantial amounts of work to be undertaken so we have the output of goods and services which sustains living standards,” he said.

“It is time to start to get the UK back to work, whilst protecting the vulnerable and reducing the risks of catching the disease for the rest of us in sensible ways.”

Sir John’s comments come as Spain allows some workers to return to their offices, while Sir

Jeremy Farrar, a member of the government's Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage), said the UK was likely to be “one of the worst, if not the worst affected country in Europe”.

The veteran Wokingham MP published his letter, which he said he has sent to the cabinet, on his blog.

In it, he outlines his thinking: “Policy should make it as easy as possible for all in the at-risk groups to self-isolate, to prevent infection.

“Efforts need to be redoubled to ensure on line deliveries of food and other items to these households, and proper financial support for those in vulnerable categories who have lost jobs or income over it.”

He added: “You need to take urgent action to save the economy.

“None of us have ever witnessed such a sharp contraction in economic activity, with an all too rapid surge in unemployment.

“There will also be far too many business failures if this carries on for much longer.

“You need to make sure this is the shortest-lived downturn as well as the deepest.

“This means a new policy of trying to get as many people and businesses as possible back to work, with sensible modifications to working

arrangements to reduce risk of infection.”

He added that companies can use modern technology to ensure people can still work from home, and they should make every effort to ensure workers maintain a safe distance.

“Factories tend to use large amounts of machinery already, reducing the numbers of employees on line and usually allowing social distancing,” Sir John wrote. “Where they do not they may need additional automation. You could consider asking people to wear face masks when working with others.”

But chancellor Rishi Sunak said on Tuesday during the Government press conference: “Right now, the single most important thing we can do for the health of our economy is to protect the health of our people.

“It’s not a case of choosing between the economy and public health – common sense tells us that doing so would be self-defeating.

“At a time when we are seeing hundreds of people dying every day from this terrible disease, the absolute priority must be to focus all of our resources, not just of the state, but of businesses, and of all of you at home as well, in a collective national effort to beat this virus.”

Easter lottery win for Binfield neighbours

THREE neighbours from Binfield are toasting an Easter windfall after their postcode came up in a national lottery.

The homes, off Forest Road in the village, have all been awarded £1,000 by the People’s Postcode Lottery in its Daily Draw for Thursday, April 9.

People’s Postcode Lottery ambassador Judie McCourt was unable to present the award due to covid-19 restrictions but sent her well-wishes to the winners.

She said: “What lovely news to start the day.

Congratulations to all our winners.”

The Lottery said that a third of its ticket sales goes to charity, and so far its players have raised more than £500 million – this draw was promoted by Maggie’s, which runs a network of cancer support centres across the country.

It has received more than £16.1 million in funding from the players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Charities will be invited to apply for the next round of funding in August.

A FINCHAMPSTEAD primary school has created an Easter treat for its pupils and their families – a hilarious lip sync video of Queen’s classic hit I Want To Break Free.

In it, staff members from Nine Mile Ride Primary School are seen dancing and singing along to the song while welding mops, brooms, feather dusters and other cleaning implements.

One even dressed up in 80s gear and is seen being pushed along in a sit and ride car as they singalong to one of Queen’s biggest hits. Another has a Freddie Mercurystyle moustache.

Headteacher Ali Brown said that the aim of the heart-warming video was “to make as many people smile as possible”.

The school usually makes a Christmas treat, but Ms Brown decided to make this extra “as a way to keep in touch with our families and as an Easter treat for the children during lockdown”.

Staff member Mark Scurr chose the song, which was felt to be the perfect choice during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“The staff at Nine Mile Ride are always up for a laugh so those who wanted to be part of the Easter fun signed up and were allocated a part,” Mrs Brown explained.

“Social distancing meant the majority of filming was done at home and then each part was sent to Mark, who spends a long time working his magic to create and produce the final result.

“It is such a strange and worrying time for our communities so we wanted to bring a bit of light relief and humour to our children and let them know that we are still here and that they are not forgotten.”

The school is part of The Circle Trust, which includes Shinfield Infants and Junior Schools and St Crispin’s School.

“Other Circle Trust schools were also putting lockdown videos together so there was a bit of friendly competition going on between us,” Mrs Brown added.

TO HELP cure boredom during the coronavirus lockdown, an illustrator is turning on her camera to offer free art classes to homeschooled children.

Noopur Thakur uses Instagram Live to broadcast a daily interactive drawing sessions that help parents create a sense of routine in what she hopes is a fun and educational way.

Ms Thakur illustrates colourful animal storybooks such as Five Little Monkeys and Playful Tiger from her home in Finchampstead.

She normally offers drawing lessons for adults and children, but the recent lockdown restrictions inspired her to take her classes online.

She said: “I found my two children suddenly at home and missing their schools, so I wanted to give them structured learning in a fun environment.

“This inspired me to reach out to as many children as I could by using online tools.”

Now, with a bit of help from her fiveyear-old, Ms Thakur streams a daily art classes to an audience of around 30 people – and growing.

The group often draws characters from Ms Thakur’s books, but sometimes the children choose a theme for the week and she bases their drawings on it, she said: “Last week we had a transportation

theme and drew an NHS Ambulance, a space shuttle and a truck.

“It was also dedicated to Easter, and the children enjoyed drawing spring flowers, the Easter bunny and painting eggs.”

Most days the group uses paper and pencil to create their masterpieces, which the children then share with everyone on Ms Thakur’s Instagram page.

She added: “I am getting a huge

positive response from both parents and kids – some tell me it is one of the biggest highlights of their children’s days, and they plan their time around it.

“Others told me that this activity helps them to deal with their anxiety which was really encouraging for me.”

Ms Thakur goes live every weekday at 11am on her Instagram @noopur.illustrations, and afterwards the classes are available on YouTube.

Living with Mammals Survey And while you’re out spotting all forms of bugs, creepy crawlies, birds and creatures, you can take part in a national Living with Mammals survey.

The team at the People’s Trust for Endangered Species say that monitoring wild mammals can give us an indication of the ‘green health’ of our communities.

So whether you have hedgehogs under your hedges, squirrels in your school grounds or even a pine marten on your patio, join in with Living with Mammals this spring.

They said a fifth of gardens are home to grey squirrels, foxes, mice, voles, hedgehogs and bats, but more than 40 species have been recorded in surveys of gardens.

Now, volunteers across the country are needed to record sightings of wild mammals — or the signs they leave behind — they see in their gardens, or from their balconies or windows, to help conservationists understand how their numbers are changing.

David Wembridge, mammal surveys coordinator at PTES, said: “Living with Mammals is something positive we can do at a difficult time and while we all stay in, we hope people will take the

opportunity to appreciate their wild neighbours.

“People across the country are helping to build an extraordinary picture of how our wildlife is changing, but with fewer records in some areas, the picture is less clear.

“For example, a species like hedgehogs are still widespread but whose numbers have been going down.”

“Surveys like Living with Mammals, which run annually, are the only way to tell if our conservation work is working, and where it’s needed,” he added.

“To date more than 3,000 gardens across Britain have been surveyed by volunteers, which is fantastic, but we still need more records to help us understand, and encourage, the wild mammals on our doorstep.”

Where and when to look Some of the best places to spot mammal signs are along walls, hedges, fences, grass verges or field margins, that provide cover.

Mammals are typically nocturnal or crepuscular — this means they’re active around sunrise and sunset, during hours of twilight.

The best time to spot mammals is early morning, when it is quiet (without the human bustle that persists in towns and cities through the evening) and, as the light improves, there is the opportunity to observe still undisturbed tracks or other signs.

To take part this spring all you have to do is record the mammals that you see each week and any signs they might leave behind, such as droppings or footprints.

Wokingham Horticultural Association has completed the first week of its Virtual Spring Show by holding a vote to decide the winners of the nine classes especially designed for the lockdown.

Congratulations go to Sally Ballard whose entries across the range of classes, vegetables, domestic and photography were appreciated by the voters. The Frewin family all succeeded, Denise winning for Best Flower and the Colouring in Picture; Graham for his wonderful picture of the bird in flight; and Joshua for his rainbow painting.

Tony Gale and Jo Ingleby successfully grew five mystery daffodils which were in peak condition in time for the Show; commiserations to the entrant with the five bulbs sitting despondently in their pot…

There was much amazement at George Rowson’s spectacular cut and share loaf, particularly as he was using yeast from 2014.

Congratulations go Rachael Norwood who followed the schedule and took before and after pictures of a drawer she sorted during the lockdown, and also to Liz Davidson who received the same number of votes for the before

volunteers and will discuss delivery of items should she require assistance.

Penny also supplied blankets for the Homeless and Vulnerable – thank you.

RBH also wanted help with eye masks for nurses and patients to help provide much needed rest in daylight hours. WIN Secretary and co-ordinator Rosemary O’Donnell has secured a team of volunteers who are currently making these eye masks. This team is being supported by another WIN group who are sourcing eye masks from airline companies which is proving very successful.

Pauline MacBrayne succeeded in the floral art classes which was more of a challenge than 'real' shows with florist shops being closed. Sheila McKeand was delighted to have received the most votes for her leftover Simnel Cake recipe producing a trio of sweet truffles.

As those who attend the shows will know, she covets the Eve Scott/ Horniman Cup and now feels she can morally keep it for another year.

The most popular section so far has been 'The best flower in my home or garden' with 22 entries in week 1 and 18 in week 2.

Voters have found it hard to choose between the delightful and varied photos, some of which will be find their way onto the WHA 2021 calendar.

Twyford and Ruscombe Horticultural Association

The group has had to close its Loddon Hall Road store due to the coronavirus.

On its last day before shutting up shop, it reported a bumper crop of visitors queuing outside.

As a result, there was a record number of sales, as people stocked up ahead of lockdown.

It’s not the only activity that the group held.

On Sunday, March 1, it welcomed young gardeners for a potato planting event.

This is forward planning, as their endeavours will be judged at the autumn show, which is planned for Saturday, September 15.

And they held a quiz on March 15, which organisers said was great fun.

But the society’s spring show, which had been due to take place on Saturday, March 28, was another victim of the coronavirus.

Waitrose donate Easter treats to Royal Berks STAFF AT Waitrose in Wokingham played the role of Easter Bunny this week as they donated chocolates and toys to children in hospital, writes Angela Garwood.

The supermarket has been working with the community over the last few weeks to support the NHS as much as possible.

Waitrose partner Torrie Glazer-Lopez saw that the Royal Berkshire Hospital children’s wards were in need of some donations for the children who were in hospital over Easter.

She gathered treats for both the children and staff working over the bank holiday weekend with the help of Linda Harrison, the assistant team manager.

The duo contacted the hospital to ensure they would like the donations they had in mind, including soft toys, Easter eggs and Easter chocolate.

And then Ms Glazer-Lopez delivered more than 100 donated items to the hospital.

Ms Harrison said: "In these extremely difficult times, we wanted to make a small gesture to those working and being treated in the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

“We hope these gifts will go a little way in helping to express our gratitude and simply brighten up the day a little for all the children staying in hospital over Easter and the hardworking NHS staff.

"We are exceptionally lucky to have amazing health and emergency services and wanted to do what we could to support them and their patients.

“As a business, we have also donated 50,000 Easter eggs as a small thank you treat for NHS workers visiting our branches last week and are delivering 400 care packages to the busiest hospitals across the UK." Waitrose has also been keeping selected essential items aside for NHS workers by creating a pop-up shop in their café — helping them get what they need when shopping. NHS staff are able to cut to the front of any queues and checkouts are opened for them if needed, ensuring an efficient shopping trip.

Don’t leave items outside charity shops THE CHARITY Retail Association is calling on the public to hold onto their donations until charity shops are able to reopen for businesses.

The association warns against leaving items outside of closed shops or already full donation banks.

During this period of social distancing, people are reconsidering the items in their homes – prompting a spring clear out.

For many, this means filling bags and boxes for favourite charity shops — which will be reliant on these donations when they reopen.

Robin Osterley, chief executive of the Charity Retail Association said: “Charity shops are so grateful that people are setting aside quality pre-loved items in this trying time, and they will benefit greatly once the time comes for them to reopen.

“Shops are currently closed and unable to take in donations, so please don’t leave donations on door steps to be ruined by weather, animals, or stolen. Please keep them to one side and take them to your local charity shop when they reopen.”

Mr Osterley added: “Leaving items on the street, or beside closed clothing banks is considered fly tipping, and poses a risk to public safety.

“The overall message from the charity retail sector is that shops are extremely grateful for donations, but would like people to hold on to them until they reopen or to make direct contact with the charity they wish to donate to.”

Wokingham band launch music video ahead of truck tour EXCLUSIVE

A WOKINGHAM band is working to raise spirits — and funds — to offer support to vulnerable members of the community during the coronavirus pandemic.

The FiLF will be bringing entertainment to people's homes during lockdown with a mobile truck tour, and are asking for donations to the Wokingham Borough Community Response to Covid-19.

Ady Dolan, keyboardist and singer in The FiLF, said: "We ask that you help us, by supporting our local community COVID-19 response team and their incredible efforts to help those less fortunate during these unprecedented times".

The band recently announced their upcoming mobile truck tour of Wokingham, which has already gained interest among their followers who are expressing their excitement on social media.

The foursome will perform their set on the back of a flatbed truck travelling through all the major housing areas of Wokingham. And they have had approval to perform as soon as lockdown restrictions have been lifted.

In the lead up to the event, and as part of their #StayHomeSaveLives campaign, the band have released a

Stay Home Tonight video, which has already been viewed 3,000 times.

"Local band doing us proud," said one fan. Another commented: "Well done boys. .. community spirit at its best!"

To create the video, sessions were individually recorded by each member before being edited and layered together to produce the composite product.

Joel Molloy, drummer in The FiLF, said: “We were really pleased with the response to our initial video and

we can’t wait to share more surprises.

“This is just the beginning, so keep an eye out on our social media platforms. Watch this space.”

This isn't the first time the band has supported local charities.

They perform an annual fundraising gig for WADE at its day centre for the elderly on Reading Road.

And appearing in pubs across Wokingham, The FiLF have built a large crowd of followers.

The band formed in 2008 in a back garden in Seaford Road, Wokingham with original members Mike Rice and Ady Dolan, and has been in its current form, with Martin Payler on bass and Joel Molloy on drums, since 2015.

Sight loss charity issues advice for helping someone with their food shop

A SIGHT LOSS charity has released advice on assisting blind and vision-impaired people with shopping throughout the coronavirus outbreak.

Nicky Shaw, director of operations at Blind Veterans UK, said: “Many people want to provide support to those who are vulnerable at this time.

“This community spirit is fantastic and can be a great help but it is important to remember a few simple things when assisting those with certain disabilities such as blindness.

“Many vision-impaired people tell us how they have struggled to identify food containers, and how they either learned or were taught systems to stop that happening.

“The problem is that those systems often begin when buying the items in the shop so if you are no longer doing your own shopping then difficulties can arise.”

The charity says that vision-impaired people

often have a system in place to help them with tasks like sorting, storing and cooking food.

They ask those helping someone with their shopping or other related tasks to follow their existing system as much as possible when helping them during this difficult time.

Ms Shaw added: “The most important thing, if it’s at all possible, is to talk to the person you are going to help to find out key information about their shopping preferences and systems they have in place to sort or label food.

“Simple questions like ‘do you have any allergies or

dietary requirements?’, ‘would you prefer vegetables or fruit that is pre chopped to make cooking easier?’, and ‘do you have a system for sorting and labelling food that you need your help with?’ will make all the difference to a vision-impaired person.”

The guidance makes

clear that people should only help if they are completely well and have not been in contact with someone who has symptoms of coronavirus during the last 14 days.

Advice on delivering food and other items includes the importance of labelling the food before delivering it to the blind or partially sighted person.

Government advice is that volunteers or those helping with shopping should not enter the person’s home. This is to reduce the risk of infection.

For many people however, they will need you to explain the content of any shopping and perhaps cooking instructions.

To do this safely Blind Veterans UK advises speaking to the person by telephone to explain what shopping has been purchased and left for them.

If this is not possible, then it is advised to stand outside, at least 2 metres from the person when explaining the contents of shopping.

What lockdown means to me

YOU might think it’s kinda pointless trying to explain ADHD but, as some of you know, mental health is something people deal with on day to day basis.

But it’s more than that; people get defined by it but it shouldn’t define you as a person. Think of it as more of a personality trait.

I went through my whole primary education without a diagnosis so I didn’t know what was wrong with me and why I was different to the rest of the pupils in my class but I knew it made me stand out.

It was 2016 when I joined my year 7 that I got the diagnosis of ADHD. I knew how to deal with it but it also came with a great amount of struggles as no one could guess what mood I was in unless I was in their lessons. I got in a lot of trouble. Halfway through year 7, I got called for a meeting in student support where I met the most caring teachers and had safe place where I could offload everything and I grew a bond with the teachers up there.

Year 8 was a struggle. I got in a lot more trouble and had a lot of exclusions on my record.

I was really struggling until I got my medication which I got towards the end of year 7 and there wasn’t really much else to say except I got support and stuff.

Year 9, people were saying I was using ADHD as an excuse for my behaviour but not once did I blame

it on that. I always said I’ve never used it as an excuse; I just made my own bad decisions.

Then, I started to take care of my mental wellbeing by distancing myself from people who weren’t good for me even though it made me feel bad about myself. Along with that, I struggled finding a good friendship group. Until I found ‘my type of people’, I wasn’t thinking, I just said to myself; ‘You’ve got a good bunch of people now’, but then my behaviour got dramatically worse, which wasn’t good.

Year 10, the final year at my local secondary school, I got another exclusion… I was happy because I knew I was on my last chance so I wasn’t too bothered but devastated because I knew what I did wasn’t the ‘real me’.

‘What and why?’ you may ask… perhaps it’s for the best we don’t go into detail.

Then I came to Foundry and I enjoyed coming here because I was around the ‘right’ people and I’m working hard (most of the time) to do the right thing. Foundry have more understanding in some situations that my old school didn’t really know how to deal with.

Whilst being here I have got to know more about myself and gained a lot more confidence and I don’t feel as alone as I did in my old school.

Also, whilst here at Foundry, I got diagnosed with ASD. It wasn’t easy to begin with but I’m slowly getting used to it. But that’s the beginning of a new chapter.

BENNY’S CONFLICT

ACK at the dome, Benny met up with Shana Vees again, who pointed towards his unconscious crewmembers and told him her teenagers would take good care of them.

The teenagers pushed Benny and Shana out of the room, and the door locked behind them. He hoped his crew would be alright.

He never meant to hurt them.

In front of the dome, The Golden Dawn sat patiently, illuminated by the setting sun.

They climbed in, and while Shana got used to the layout, Benny went to get Carlos.

He was sitting, waiting, in the holding cell.

He nodded when he saw Benny arrive, “You finally did the thing with that hacker guy?”

Benny shrugged, “With extra

steps. There’s someone I’d like you to meet.”

He untied Carlos and led him out the cell, “This is Shana Vees.

She’s agreed to help us find your parents.”

Carlos stared at the Gorgon woman, who smiled at him, “So you must be Carlos. I’ve heard of some of the work you’ve done. The thing with the mine and all those Gorgons? I was impressed with how you took charge.”

Uneasily, Carlos addressed the Gorgon, “Uh, thanks. I’ve heard of some of the stuff you’ve done as well.”

Shana raised an eyebrow, “You liked it?”

Carlos cleared his throat, “You’re the Shana Vees from the courthouse shooting, right? The dreadnought bombing? The gas attack at dome fourteen?”

Benny was confused. He had heard about those terror attacks on the HoloNews, but he had no idea Shana Vees was behind them.

Shana’s smile grew larger, “Yes, those were some of my best works.

But that was when I was younger.

I NEVER thought COVID-19 would happen, let alone it becoming a National Emergency causing a Lockdown where everything around me shuts.

I didn’t take it seriously thinking, “it’s just the flu, it’ll be fine”.

What was happening seemed impossible. I remember being at work and being called by my best friend, who lives in Winchester, asking, “Have you seen the news?”

I quickly and abruptly realised that everything was spiralling out of control.

The past two years of studying for my A-Levels felt like essentially nothing, exams were cancelled, schools shut and the restaurant I worked at closed. I was left with this longing for it all to be over and for “normal life” to return.

One thing that the pandemic and Lockdown has taught me is how much I take life for granted; being able to out in my car and go to a drivethrough late at night, the ability to see whoever I want, whenever I want,

“I didn’t have a goal, I was just angry. But not anymore. Now I target specific people, and not as violently.”

Benny stared at Shana, “You were a violent terrorist and you didn’t tell me?”

“I didn’t need to. I don’t do those things anymore. I’m a changed woman. You two know a lot about changing. Besides, S.T.A.R. does infinitely worse every day to innocent aliens, just because they’re not humans. That doesn’t mean they don’t have humanity.”

Benny looked directly into Vees’ eyes, “You don’t fight fire with fire.

If you do the same things bad people did to them, you’re no better.”

“No, Benny. You did worse.”

The ship was silent, as everyone stared at Shana.

“You’ll need my help getting into the prison. I can read minds. I’ll know where Carlos’ parents are. If you get rid of me, you won’t do this.

So keep me on your side.”

Benny looked over at Carlos, who nodded, “Alright then, Vees.

You can stay. But do nothing we wouldn’t do. Then you can get whatever you wanted on that planet and we’ll part ways.”

Not having to worry about whether my trip is an essential one, socially distancing or being restricted to only leaving the house once a day to exercise.

There’s so much new vocabulary to get my head around.

When Lockdown is over

and a “new normal” surfaces, I won’t turn down a shift at work as I get to see all of the amazing people I work with.

I won’t turn down dinner with my parents and I will always focus on living my life with all the fulfilling things I’ve ever wanted to do.

I cannot thank the NHS enough, they are an everyday inspiration to each and every one of us.

Poetry writing competition for youngsters YOUNG PEOPLE with a passion for storytelling are invited to join a poetry competition on the theme of distance.

Alex Baker, leader of Wokingham Library's teen creative writing club, Igniting Writing launched the competition last month, and entries close this weekend – at 11pm on Sunday.

Although Igniting Writing’s regular sessions have been postponed, the poetry competition is an opportunity for anyone aged 11 to 18 to get involved with the group.

To enter, poems must be 500 words or fewer — this includes the title and any subtitles used.

They must focus on the theme of distance and can be poetry or freeform writing.

All entries must be rated PG, so no swearing, nudity, or overly graphic gore, and must be original content.

Alice goes down the digital path...

T WAS planned to be the centrepiece of South Hill Park’s Easter celebrations, but like just about everything, the coronavirus scuppered the show.

The Bracknell-based arts centre is undeterred – Alice will go on her magical musical adventure in August, all being well.

To whet audiences’ appetites, and to show them just what they’ve been missing this month the cast have teamed up to create a lockdown version of the song Lost In Time.

It is South Hill Park’s first digital community company performance, and recorded during virtual rehearsals held by the cast of Alice.

A spokesperson for the arts centre said: “It is sure to lift the spirits of anyone looking for

inspiration and hope at home.

Ingredients for 4 � 600g Minced lamb � 2 Sliced Green Peppers � 1 large Onion finely chopped � 2 tsp Curry Powder � 1 tsp Garam Masalla � ½ tsp Chilli powder or to your taste � 1 tbsp Garlic puree � 1 tbsp Ginger Puree � 6 tbsp Vegetable oil � 100ml Water � Fresh Coriander finely chopped to garnish � Salt to season

together in the oil until the mince is lightly browned and the peppers beginning to soften over a medium high heat.

Add the ginger, garlic, curry powder and chilli powder and stir in well.

Stir fry for 2-3 minutes until the aromas release and pour over the water.

Bring up to a boil then reduce the heat and simmer until the liquid has evaporated.

Sprinkle over the garam masalla and stir in for 2 minutes. Taste and season with salt if needed.

Serve with plain rice and garnish with the coriander.

Optionally stir in a couple of spoonfuls of thick full fat Greek yogurt just before serving.

How to help your pet cope with you being in lockdown

N these worrying times, our furry friends are putting smiles back on our faces, soothing our anxieties and just being by our sides helping us feel less alone.

However, we shouldn’t forget these can also be stressful times for our pets and we need to do our bit to help them too.

Most of our pets are used to a routine and often having the house to themselves during the times we are away.

It is important that we recognise the impact of staying at home on our pets as well as the effect it can have on ourselves. Pets will often pick up on our stress levels, some less noticeably than others.

This can lead to behavioural changes, which may be a way of coping but can also be a cry for help.

If you are worried about your pet’s behaviour in any way please call your veterinary practice for advice.

Here at St Vincent’s Vets we can give veterinary advice on behavioural issues and also regularly work side-by-side with qualified animal behaviourists.

Sometimes there could be underlying health reasons for behavioural changes and it may be necessary to check for these. Again – please call your vets and ask for advice.

Much like us, for our pets, routine is the key.

As much as possible keep feeding, walking and playtimes as consistent as possible. Some pets may be struggling with boredom due to reduced time outside

and may need increased mental stimulation to help prevent problems.

This can be in the form of puzzle feeders as well as short play or training sessions.

It is better to do multiple short sessions throughout the day rather than one long one. Please do not use this period to increase their exercise levels and try to keep it as close to normal as possible.

It is also important to respect their quiet time. Most pets will have an area which they will take themselves off to when they need to relax. If they don't then create one. Make sure every member of the family knows not to disturb them.

Try to keep noise away from this area while your pet is resting or have some quiet time for yourselves.

If they are telling you they've had enough then stop.

Interaction is good be it play or fuss but keep it on their terms. Too much, especially of cuddles and hugs, can become overwhelming and can cause negative reactions.

We also need to make sure that they do not become too dependant on us. This could cause separation anxiety when we go back to work or school.

Try to build in periods of separation into the day even if it is just separate parts of the house where you leave their area, going through your leaving routine, to go into a home office or playtime in the kids’ bedrooms.

Remember every pet is an individual and will need different things. You have a special bond with your pet and I ask you to use it now. Read their body language as

IFE is far from normal at the moment. With pubs and restaurants ordered to close their doors to walk-in customers, many are making the most of a bad situation and are offering a takeaway service.

One such pub is The Shurlock Inn, based in Shurlock Row, right at the northern end of the borough.

It is part of the Rare Breed Dining Group, which includes The Corn Stores close to Reading’s railway station and The Plough Inn in Cobham.

The aim is to bring Londonquality dining to our area, with the passionate team championing British food, drink and hospitality.

If you had been able to visit the Inn in those pre-lockdown days, you’ll know that it is a charming 17th-century country pub. It’s run as a freehouse, and its current menu is a mixture of modern English dishes, hearty classics and weekly specials, all home-cooked with fresh local produce wherever possible.

The pub is also offering a food box scheme, in partnership with Wellocks, which usually supplies restaurants. People can choose from eight food boxes, including a Dairy Box, Cupboard and Pantry Box, Fresh Fruit Box and Sunday Lunch Box. Orders can be picked up the following day.

But to its takeaway menu: The Sherlock Inn has a variety of offerings to suit most palettes including a food, drink and steak DIY kit collection service.

They said: “We are committed to keeping our business operational and our staff busy, through

challenging times, and you can now enjoy your favourite meals in the comfort of your front room.”

It takes orders for takeaways from 5pm to 9pm Wednesdays to Fridays, from 1pm to 9pm on Saturdays and noon to 7pm on Sundays. Food boxes are Tuesday to Friday from 1pm.

Customers place an order by email – hello@theshurlockinn.co.uk – customers get a reply confirming the approximate collection time and a payment link. It’s usually ready within 45 minutes, but the inn operates a staggered collection time to ensure safety of all.

The ordering process was seamless. I emailed my order over on Wednesday to ensure that we had a Sunday roast – The Shurlock Inn has a set amount of orders that they can take on any particular day.

To collect, you wait outside by an open door so the whole process is safe and contactless.

There is plenty of the menu: six main courses, salads, light bites, a children’s menu and a Sunday roast.

For those enjoying their time at home, there’s also DIY options: a steak or a romantic one, fusing a starter, a main, dessert and wine.

The Shurlock Inn seems to have every option covered.

We reviewed two main courses, a children’s main and the DIY steak kit (£18.50): a 310g ribeye (11oz in old money) with a garlic butter sauce – you can choose your favourite.

The side dishes were a mixed leaf salad, new potatoes with thyme and garlic, and broccoli with garlic and chilli.

Instructions are given to how long to cook the steak for depending on your choice. While the steak was cooking I placed the potatoes with garlic and thyme in the oven and steamed the broccoli.

The whole process took less than 20 minutes to cook and assemble, easy peasy.

My husband praised the steak, as well as the chef: “It was delicious,” he told me. “The steak is so tender, I love the potatoes and the onion salad is lovely.”

Norden Farm appeals for support NORDEN Farm has published ways that supporters can help the charity through its lockdown closure, writes Daisy Hanson.

The arts centre is calling out to the public to help prepare for the eventual reopening through donations and spreading the word.

The Maidenhead-based charity normally holds live music concerts, theatre performances and an art gallery, but lockdown measures have caused its closure.

On its website, an update said Covid-19 “is taking an unprecedented toll on our resources and is impacting our ability to continue serving the community”.

It then listed ways people can support the charity through these uncertain times.

By paying £45 to become a bronze member of The Farm, the public can provide financial help and enjoy benefits, such as priority ticket booking and early brochures.

People can also shop through AmazonSmile and select the arts centre as their chosen charity,

in a brioche bun with skin-on chips and is a very reasonable £10.

The Shurlock Inn uses high quality beef in its chunky patties.

Barbecue smoked, it got the thumbs up from my teenage son.

Also opting for a burger was my eight-year-old who chose from the children’s menu, a very reasonable £4.

For my main, I enjoyed the chicken Sunday roast (£14). It was scrumptious and served with cabbage, broccoli and carrots, with the crispiest of roast potatoes, a large Yorkshire pudding and a flavoursome gravy.

There was only one choice of dessert, Pain au chocolat bread and butter pudding with custard, £4

each. I want the recipe – totally delicious, it was demolished in seconds.

The Shurlock Inn has a fantastic set-up, making it extremely straight forward to order. With professional and friendly service and delicious quality food, this is the perfect lockdown treat.

0800 30 50 30 Rams runners-up in National One debut THE RAMS have finished second in their debut season in National One. Coronavirus has forced the RFU to curtail the games played and calculate final positions based on a best playing record.

As a result, promotions and relegations apply in the leagues.

Sadly, only the top team gets promotion to the championship and that is adjudged to be Richmond, who finish the season with a tally of 116.44 points.

The Rams came second with 107.79 – that .79 of a point is crucial, as it gives them the edge over Rosslyn Park, who had 107.21 and ended up in third place.

Relegated are Rotherham (48.85 points), Canterbury (18.85) and Hull Ionians (13.75).

A statement on the club’s website said: “Congratulations to Richmond who will be promoted back to the Greene King IPA Championship for 2020/21.

“Coming down are Yorkshire Carnegie who finished bottom of the Championship.

“Unfortunately Rotherham, Canterbury and Hull Ionians will be relegated to National 2 South/North.

“We are looking forward to reuniting with former Nat 2 South rivals, Taunton Titans and Tonbridge Juddians, who are promoted to National One. “Also promoted to Nat 1 after a great season is Caldy, Champions of National Two North.”

Club’s support for Samaritans THE RAMS have teamed up with Reading Abbey RFC to pledge support to the Samaritans during the coronavirus pandemic.

And they are urging anyone affected by the stresses of these strange days to get in touch with the listening ear service.

A note on the Rams’ website says: “We know these are stressful times so, along with Reading Abbey RFC, we are supporting the Samaritans Reading. Please don't be alone.

“This message goes out to everyone connected to the club. Along with Reading Abbey RFC we are partnering to support the Samaritans. The Samaritans provide confidential, emotional support for those having difficulties and negative thoughts.

“We don't want people to feel they are alone.

If you feel low or you know someone who is finding things difficult then please don't hesitate to talk to friends, your teammates and if needed please call the Samaritans FREE on 116 123 at any time day or night.

The club will also support the charity when rugby can be played again.

FA gives approval for Woodley WOODLEY FC is one of the best places to play and enjoy football.

That’s the verdict of the FA after it renewed the club’s The FA Charter Standard Community Club award.

Earlier this week, the Kestrels reported that Tom Lee, National Leagues & Clubs Operations Manager at The FA, had praised the in a letter.

Bobby takes to the virtual track

YOU CAN force the boy to self-isolate, but you can’t take the racer away from him.

Wokingham racing sensation Bobby Trundley is, like all sports stars unable to practise or take part in races, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. But that’s no problem for the budding rally driver: he’s carrying on at home.

He’s a member of Team BRIT, which is aiming to be the first British all-disabled team to race in the Le Mans 24-hour. It also supports people with physical and psychological challenges in accessing motorsport through its Racing Academy.

But with Motorsport UK cancelling all races until social distancing regulations are removed, Bobby is staying race-ready by taking part in some online sessions on some of the world’s most famous tracks.

Over eight weeks, they can practice using a steering wheel and pedal set/hand controls connected to a computer.

And after a successful race, budding racing drivers and motorsport fans can get involved themselves.

Last week, Bobby put in an impressive performance, battling for pole throughout the race against former Le Mans winner and FIA WEC

World Champion, Martin Plowman, who eventually took P1.

The rest of the series will see British GT drivers Alex Toth-Jones and Sean Cooper, along with Britcar drivers and crew line up alongside Team BRIT’s drivers, crew and coaches.

Team BRIT Founder Dave Player said, “We’re all having to adapt in these extremely challenging times,

so we were really keen to make sure our drivers can keep racing in some way or other.

“Eracing is seen as the training ground for many professional racers now, and we’ve been exploring this area through eTeam BRIT for some time, so it made sense for us to take our drivers to the online track to keep them engaged, competitive and ready for

the start of the season later this year.

“After a brilliant first race, which let us test the platform and our systems, we’re keen to welcome other drivers to come and race against our team. Get involved and let’s get racing back on the agenda from the safety of our homes.”

Bobby has severe autism and joined the all-disabled team last year, winning four out of his five races.

For now though, it’s all about the virtual dream. “eRacing helps keep my head focused and more able to learn circuits – even those I most likely wouldn’t get the chance to drive in real life,” he said.

“Using a sim is such a vital tool for a racing driver as you can learn your race craft and the best racing lines on the tracks. Also, you never if you might be online with you, so you might be racing against a celebrity or pro-driver.

“We can’t wait to get back out on track for real, but now, we’ll be doing all we can to practice and prepare from home.”

The races will be held through the Assetto Corsa Competizione eracing series, at a number of iconic race circuits, including Silverstone, Monza and Nürburgring.

Williams has loved managing Kestrels � From back page

“I’ve loved it (managing the first team),” said Williams after he made the step up from managing Woodley United Royals, the Kestrels Reserve team, to take over the first-team to try and improve their survival hopes.

Williams detailed his love of football and described his transition of getting into coaching after finishing playing.

“It’s a tough job, coming midway through the season and having things to turn around but I've absolutely loved it.

“About four or five years ago, me and my brother went to go and watch the first team play and we were coaching under 18’s at the time. I said to him that night, ‘this is a bit of us’.

“And we said ‘one day, who knows.’ So it is something that I’ve always wanted to do, although I didn’t foresee it happening as quickly as it has done.

“My dad was a manager. When he first took over managing my brother’s team, I think at under 14’s level.

“He didn’t know too much about football other than watching me and

my brother playing a lot, so he wanted some help coaching, so I put together some sessions and went along to coach them even though they were only 18 months younger than me as a 15-year-old.

“I started doing it then, it’s always something that was a natural step to do once I had finished playing. I knew that I’d coach. It comes from being totally obsessed with football and thinking once I’ve stopped playing, ‘What am I going to do next? Okay, coaching.’

“It was always going to happen, it was never a particularly conscious decision.”

Woodley climbed their way up the table and eventually out of the relegation zone, leading to an 18th place finish, while the Kestrels boss highlighted their 3-1 victory over Marlow as his favourite moment of the season.

“From this season it’s an easy one to pick a favourite game, the 3-1 away at Marlow on December 28 was a highlight.

“I hadn’t been with the boys for very long. We got the strongest team together with a lot of the boys coming back, Gareth Ainsworth played, he gave up his time to come

and play, I really appreciated that.

That’s one that I will remember, probably forever.

The Kestrels boss looked ahead to the prospect of having an improved season when football does eventually resume, but reiterated that he believes in the quality of his current squad.

“When I first took over, I said to the players straight away that I totally believe in their ability in the dressing room, and I still do. I think that third from bottom this year is still an under-achievement from what is there, we have a hell of a lot of ability.

“I think I’ve added to the squad as well with some really good young players so I have to be optimistic.

“I've already asked all the players if anyone wanted to leave or if everyone was happy to stay to get an idea of where we might be for next year.

“Across the board everyone said that they are staying, I’m more than happy to go into next year with the same players.

“It will almost feel like starting again almost, but it’s not really as I’ve had five months with the boys.

before and a lot of the boys I had in the reserves are now in the first team so I’ve known a lot of them for a long time. Hopefully it won’t feel too different.

“I’ve said to the boys already that they can rely on that Woodley and I will be here at the end of this.

The club is in a really good place and it will look as similar as we can possibly make it.

“Last season we were close, I think we were one good result away from all the players getting the belief back and confidence that we were moving in the right direction, we were very close to that.

“It’s difficult to be positive now about it as we don’t know when this will come to an end, but I really believe in the group that I’ve got.

“I don’t want there to be any communication when the league may start, it’s impossible for them to give a date. It’s pointless because we can all see this could last for a long time.

“They are under no pressure to give a start date because as much as football means to us, it's not the most important thing right now.

“We need to wait until it’s completely safe to go back to it.”

ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 WOKINGHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL (BEECH HILL ROAD, SPENCERS WOOD) (TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF DRIVING) ORDER 2020 NOTICE IS HEREBY given that Wokingham Borough Council as Traffic Authority proposes to make an Order under Section 14 (1) (a) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 the effect of which is prohibit any vehicle from proceeding along: Beech Hill Road between its junctions with Diana Close and White House Lane.

The alternative route for all vehicles affected by this restriction shall be via Lambs Lane and B3349 Basingstoke Road, or by this route in reverse.

Works requiring this restriction will take place between 4th May and 18th May 2020.

21. Doddington Close, Earley between its junctions with Meldreth Way and the granite setts.

Works requiring this restriction will take place between 26th May and 27th May 2020

The reason for these prohibitions is to allow J Devine Civil Engineering contractors to undertake installation of street lighting ducts and resurfacing work in safety.

22. Nash Close, Earley from its junctions with Hartsbourne Road for its entirety.

Works requiring this restriction will take place on 28th May 2020

Access for residents and businesses within the boundaries of these restrictions will be maintained at all times.

23. Maltby Way, Earley between its junctions with Ryhill Way and Tilney Way. Works requiring this restriction will take place on 28th May 2020

The restriction imposed by the Order shall only apply during those periods when traffic signs complying with the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016 are lawfully displayed.

24. Mitford Close, Three Mile Cross from its junction with Basingstoke Road for its entirety.

Works requiring this restriction will take place between 28th May and 29th May 2020 25. Regis Close, Shinfield from its junction with Woodside Way for its entirety.

Works requiring this restriction will take place on 29th May 2020 26. Woodside Way, Shinfield between its junctions with Shirley Avenue and Wokingham Borough Boundary.

Works requiring this restriction will take place between 29th May and 30th May 2020 27. Drewett Close, Shinfield from its junction with Whitley Wood Lane for its entirety.

Works requiring this restriction will take place on 30th May 2020 28. Fairmead Road, Shinfield between its junctions with Hollow Lane and Oatlands Road.

Works requiring this restriction will take place between 30th May and 31st May 2020 29. Elizabeth Rout Close, Spencers Wood from its junction with B3349 Hyde End Road for its entirety.

Works requiring this restriction will take place on 31st May 2020

The restrictions contained in the Order shall come into operation on the 4th May 2020 and shall continue in force for a period not exceeding 18 months or until the works have been completed, whichever is the earlier.

Woodley United manager gave his thoughts to Wokingham.Today afterhis first taste of managing the Kestrels first team in the second half of the 2019/20 season EXCLUSIVE

DESPITE the season being ended early due to the coronavirus, Williams led Woodley to an 18th place finish, which would have ensured league safety in the Hellenic League Division One East.

“My first thoughts to the league being concluded were with the teams that were winning leagues and close to promotion,” said Williams after the FA deemed the 2019/20 season ‘null and void’.

“A lot of those teams would have had money to come from that and now it all seems like for nothing so my initial thoughts are with them whereas for us for us, it was more of a struggle this season.

“But the more I’ve thought about it and had conversations

with other people about it, I think it is the only conclusion and the right thing to do to void the season.

“I think it will be a testing ground for them doing that across the board, I wouldn't be surprised at all if the football league and the Premier League did the same thing.

“The thing is, when are you supposed to fit all of these fixtures in and when will it be safe to do it, you can’t have the season permanently on pause.

It gives everyone a chance to know where we are and prepare for next season.

“Although it is difficult as we have no idea of when that is going to be, so there isn't a whole lot of preparation that is worth doing yet.

“The more I’ve thought about

it, the more disappointing it has been because even though we were near the bottom, which was tough, it seems like all the hours of work of picking teams, chasing players, preparing training, the worry of fixtures, post-match analysis.

“The hours and hours of work put in are lost so that’s a strange feeling.”

Williams reflected on a turbulent season for the Kestrels which saw him installed as the first-team manager, taking over from previous boss Jon Laugharne, in December.

“It's definitely a relief to have finished the season above the relegation zone.

“When I first took over I said to the club I said to them that I was confident of keeping them in the league and regardless of the circumstances it is under, that has happened.

“From that point of view, that is good but it’s difficult to look back with any positivity because it feels like the season is gone. � Continued on page 27
