The 3rd Annual PCRC Benefit Dinner recognizes the recognition of the positive impact of extraordinary charity by ordinary people. We celebrate the power of applied justice and compassion that can change lives every day for our neighbors in San Mateo County. Proceeds from this event directly fund necessary services that improve the quality of life for more then 35,000 people in San Mateo and surrounding Counties, without regard for race, religious affiliation or gender. The Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center (PCRC) is a nationally recognized leader in mediation, facilitation, conflict resolution and training. We are at the forefront of ongoing efforts to reduce violence by addressing the root causes of poverty and inequity. PCRC’s anti-bullying intervention, Building Empathy and Respect (BER), partners with schools to teach youth and their parents about the harmful impact of disrespectful behavior and how to develop empathy and respect for others. Our dialogue work explores the negative effect of verbal aggression and the potentially devastating impact on children’s self-esteem. Our trained volunteers mediate disputes by helping conflicting parties communicate effectively, uncover common interests and reach positive resolution. Young adults build valuable life skills to better manage conflict, and learn to serve as community leaders. Parents and teachers learn effective communication techniques and skills to establish safe and respectful homes and positive classroom environments. PCRC Partners have felt the immediate impact of our services as noted by a school counselor: “BER program participants have improved their behavior. Teachers...see a change in their respect for others. Parents have appreciated how the BER program has opened needed discussion between them and their children.” OUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE PCRC’s ongoing plan is to continue providing these valuable services in San Mateo County. PCRC’s goal is to develop partnerships with social network services to create interactive, web-based conflict resolution resources for youth, parents, and community members. Finally, PCRC seeks to serve as a national model for mediation and community outreach. We invite you to become a part of this worthy effort.
