Dean’s Update - Thankful and Proud Winter Term is here! As Thanksgiving approaches, we want to take a moment to offer a sincere ‘thank you’ to our PCOM Community of students, faculty and staff for your commitment in advancing patient care, for your pioneering research, and for your support of the PCOM School of Pharmacy’s (PCOMSOP) vision of excellence in pharmacy education. Although we continue to push through the day-to-day challenge of all things COVID, I am proud of the resilience and perseverance of everyone in the School of Pharmacy. Faculty Leadership Highlights

PCOM School of Pharmacy Investigators Partner with Aurinia Pharmaceuticals Inc. to Study Drugs Used to Treat Autoimmune Diseases

PCOM-SOP faculty stay busy inside and outside the classroom. In addition to teaching, faculty conduct research, publish pharmacy-related research, serve in leadership roles in various pharmacy organizations. Here are some faculty accomplishments:

PCOM-SOP’s Xinyu (Eric) Wang, PhD, has been named the principal investigator for a yearlong research project centered on analyses of drugs used to treat lupus—a chronic, autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and pain in humans. Drs. Taval (Dr. Murthy) and Srujana Rayalam, both coinvestigators, are also involved in the research.

Dr. Sara (Mandy) Reece, PharmD, CDCES, BC-ADM, BCACP, FADCES, was elected as one of the leaders of ACCP’s Practice and Research Networks (PRN) as the Chair Elect in the field of Endocrine and Metabolism for the 2021-2022 year.

PCOM Student Wins First Place at National Convention Krysten McNaught (PharmD '22) came in first place for her poster at the national SNPhA convention in August. The poster was titled: "Eliminating Red Man Syndrome…

Dr. Brent Rollins, RPh, PhD, was invited to participate as a panelist for a virtual workshop in November, titled “Informing and Refining the Prescription Drug Promotion Research Agenda” conducted in through the Duke University Margolis Center for Health Policy.

Student Corner Organization Highlights

The Pharmacy Council recently completed fall term elections. Congratulations to the newly elected representatives from the Class of 2025 Election: Seana Williams - 2025 Class Chair and Makeda Lovelace - 2025 Class Representative. In addition, Vyha Vo (PharmD ’25) was recently elected to fill the vacant Historian position on Pharmacy Council.

Students from the PCOM School of Pharmacy represented the school at this year's Georgia Pharmacy Association (GPhA) annual convention, held at Amelia Island, Florida. GPhA Student Leadership Board, including Junior Representative Sofia Jenkins (PharmD '22), President-Elect Andrew Wilson (PharmD '24), Senior Member Dion Blocker (PharmD '23), and members Etim Nkereuwem (PharmD '23), Tom Le (PharmD '23), and Makeda Lovelace (PharmD '25) attended.

Thanks to all who threw their hat in the ring to run for elected office and engage in student leadership at PCOM.

Alumni Accolades

PCOM P4 students participated in the annual Georgia Residency Showcase in October.

This program is designed to give students an opportunity to learn more about PGY1 and PGY2 residency programs in Georgia and other surrounding states.

PCOM Alumni, Drs. Brandon Dang (PharmD ’20) and Victoria Oshunkentan (PharmD ’21) recently returned to PCOM to share about post-graduate opportunities at the Rutgers Institute for Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowships. Drs. Dang and Oshunkentan are completing post-doctoral fellowships. Dr. Dang is in his second year as a Post-Doctoral Fellow for Oncology Franchise Marketing with Janssen Pharmaceutical Company. Dr. Oshunkentan is in her first year of the Post-Doctoral Fellow for Pharmacovigilance at Johnson & Johnson.

Eun Choi (PharmD ’23), Alex Kwan (PharmD ’23) and Zachary Powell (PharmD ’23) recently completed in the American College of Clinical Pharmacy Clinical Pharmacy Challenge. The team advanced to the second round, the first time a PCOM team has achieved this accomplishment!

Service to Our Community PCOM School of Pharmacy students from the classes of 2022, 2023 and 2024 completed over 2500 cumulative approved service hours last year. This included numerous virtual and limited live activities during the pandemic.

Welcome to the College!

In the Classroom

PCOM SOP is implementing two new American Pharmacist Association (APhA) certificate programs to the curriculum.

PCOM SOP welcomes our newest faculty member in the Dept. of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Yujin Kim, Pharm.D., Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutics joins the School of Pharmacy. Dr. Kim earned her BS in Applied Mathematics from Treveca Nazerene University in Nashville, TN, her PharmD from Mercer University, and subsequently went on to receive her PhD in pharmaceutical sciences from Mercer. Her area of expertise is transdermal, topical and microneedle delivery. She has an interest in Quantitative Systems Pharmacology and Pharmacometrics research, and comes to us from the FDA as a fellow in the Office of New Drugs/Office of Drug Evaluation. Dr Kim begins her position on Dec 1st 2021.

First year pharmacy students will continue to complete the Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery Certificate Program to provide vaccines. Second year pharmacy students will learn the most current evidence-based care for patients with diabetes with The Pharmacist & PatientCentered Diabetes Care. Lastly, third year pharmacy students will hone their medication therapy management skills prior to APPEs by completing the Delivering Medication Management Services. Upon completing the program, students will receive a certificate of completion.

What is new?

In Pharmacy Practice

PCOM School of Pharmacy is continuously seeking innovative opportunities for practice experiences. In recent months, we have established new rotations for advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPE).

PCOM SOP has a new advanced pharmacy practice experience with Organic Remedies in Philadelphia, PA. The dispensary is based on a patient-centric model of healthcare. The healthcare providers spend time with each patient.

Additionally, the site has a research agreement with PCOM to study therapeutic application of medical marijuana.

PCOM SOP will begin offering an APPE at UCB in May 2022 for students interested in exploring a career in industry.

Interprofessional Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience Patient outcomes are improved when an interprofessional team delivers healthcare. The perspective of the various disciplines provide a more thoughtful treatment plan for patients.

PCOM is committed to interprofessional education to prepare graduates to be a part of an interprofessional healthcare team. As PCOM’s IPE-focused efforts continue to expand, programs are working together for student success. One initiative that was recently launched will send PCOM Georgia’s Doctor of Pharmacy Students to PCOM’s Family Medicine Office to interact with their Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine peers in a clinical setting. Celia Sha’ron Black (PharmD ‘22) is the first student to travel to Philadelphia for clinical rotation.

During her rotation at PCOM’s Family Medicine Office, Ms. Black practiced the patient-facing skills that she will need upon graduating.
