them. I remember when I started working on Old Burling ton Street having moved from working in the City. The atmosphere was very different. Everything glittered around Old Bond Street and the surrounding streets. The pubs and coffee shops for everyday workers are there but very much tucked away compared with the commercial hubs around St Paul’s Cathedral and the Bank of England. The conversations are different too. On Mount Street, a glamorous Ameri can lady was talking into her phone:

I wanted to know more, but my flat white arrived at the wrong time as she carried on up the street.

There is a genuine dread of profession als in the West End of a move to the Wharf. It is the wealth management world’s Siberia. You get sentenced to travel back and forth on the Jubilee Line until you spot an exit strategy. I once worked with someone who said Mayfair, “is the centre, of the centre, of the centre of the world’s global elite”. It does have a special feel. The unique thing about this area is that you can peak into the world of wealth from street level. In other places, in other countries, it is mostly locked away behind gates and fences. You can see it for yourself.

He refers to an obscure Brazilian film as a segue into a protracted story about his travels in South America. Nice work. Had to be an interview, you couldn’t have pulled that move with friends or colleagues, they would shoot you down! It seemed to be going well, he was on the full charm of fensive. Trying to find out more about his interviewer, he asked about her motivation:

“I WAS TRAVELLING THE WORLD AS A MUSICIAN BUT THEN I REALISED UN LESS I AM EXCEPTIONAL I AM GOING TO BE BROKE MY WHOLE LIFE...SO THEN I THOUGHT BANKING!”

“WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE FILM?”.

Thwarted. I sat next to two people in a coffee shop job interview scenario on Jermyn Street. The younger guy trying to impress his new potential colleague. She asks him,

“I ESCAPED WORKING IN CANARY WHARF BY ONE DAY - IT WAS SO CLOSE!”

TAKE A LOOK AND KEEP YOUR EARS OPEN FOR CONVERSATIONS AROUND YOU, IT MIGHT JUST LIFT YOUR DAY.

At the same time, in another coffee shop in another universe, a stressedout banker relates how they quit spreadsheets to travel the world as a musician ... As they departed the coffee shop, the interviewer related her narrow escape from working in a windswept territory on the Isle of Dogs,

THE REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS IS EXPERIENCING EXCITING GROWTH AS AN INVESTMENT HUB.

THE ADVANTAGES CYPRUS HAS TO OFFER 8

The team at Resolute Cy prus had an interesting per spective on the advantages the country has to offer. As a relatively new player in the investment fund landscape, there are inevitable cost ef ficiencies to be found. But just as impor tant is the attention and service you can expect – funds that would be classed as

relatively small in more estab lished markets are taken very seriously in Cyprus and receive all the care and attention they deserve. This lower entry point is making it very attractive to private families and family offices. But things are moving fast and international institutional players are already moving to Cyprus to take advantage of all that the country has to offer. Add in current international events and there is a steady stream of businesses looking to relocate to Cyprus from more volatile locations, and this is having a positive effect on the country’s real estate market. Alkis Ha jittofis and Panos Hadjichristofis are your guides – catch up with them below.

For an update on the growth of the funds industry in Cy prus we turned to Andreas Yiasemides at PWC. A review after the financial crisis a decade ago saw the re structuring of the legal frame work and this has paid dividends, with the country now emerging as a reputable EU fund hub offering a modern, flexible and highly at tractive legal framework for alternative investment funds. The country has seen a remarkable growth trajectory for alterna

How has your business adapted in light of COVID-19?

A number of our portfolio companies adapted, some made use of the fur lough scheme and CBILS loans and the majority reduced overheads where possible. Despite COVID-19, Rock pool invested into 5 deals in 2020 and 6 deals in 2021 however focussing on more resilient UK SMEs.
