Basic KVM What is KVM switching? KVM stands for: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Keyboard, Video and Mouseâ&#x20AC;?. KVM switching allows you to control multiple computers from a single keyboard, monitor, and mouse (Console).

Advanced KVM 1. Managing Multiple Servers Additional KVM switches can increase the overall capacity of your installation. There are two methods for expanding your KVM switch installation: Cascading and Daisy-chaining.

Cascading Cascading involves using the KVM port(s) of a parent KVM switch (one that is above a switch linked down from it) to connect to the console ports of a child KVM switch. With numerous child switches linked down from the parent, the effect is reminiscent of the way water cascades down a waterfall. Cascading adds capacity to a KVM installation, but the parent KVM switch loses at least one KVM port for each cascaded child switch.

Daisy-chaining Daisy-chaining refers to connecting two KVM switches via dedicated daisy-chain ports. The switches are strung together in a chain, similar to the way children make chains of daisies by tying the end of one daisy to the head of another. A daisy-chained installation does not utilize KVM ports or user ports to connect one switch to another as in a cascaded installation, and thereby preserves the number of valuable ports. The port capacity of a daisy-chained installation is the total of all the KVM ports for all of the KVM switches on the chain.

Turning Your USB KVM Switch or Computer Sharing Device into a Combo (PS/2-USB) Device USB port technology has emerged in response to the proliferation of external peripheral devices (keyboards, mice, scanners, digital cameras, removable drives, etc.), that are increasingly being connected to the latest generation of computers. ATEN already offers several types of KVM switch with USB console ports (for keyboards and mice) to meet this market shift. However, we know that many of our customers want to use a PS/2 keyboard and PS/2 mouse â&#x20AC;&#x201C; or a PS/2 keyboard and USB mouse â&#x20AC;&#x201C; with their USB KVM Switch. Our KVM switches provide an extensive, easy-to-use, hotkey function that makes it convenient to access, control, and configure your KVM installation from the keyboard. They offer the simplest way to access the connected computers.

Hotkey Mode All hotkey operations begin with invoking Hotkey Mode. The invocation sequence depends on the product and the user’s preference. In each case, there is a factory default sequence and an alternate sequence that the user can select instead. The Hotkey invocation sequence for each product is shown in the table. The default sequence is given first and appears in bold text.

Port Selection Hotkey port switching simply involves pressing the appropriate hotkey sequence. In some cases simply invoking Hotkey Mode cycles you through the available ports; in others, the sequence involves specifying the Port ID that the computer you want to access is connected to; while in still other cases, it involves pressing one of the Arrow keys.

Retail Convenience store chains want to manage their outlets as efficiently as possible. Their main concerns are controlling cash register transactions, preventing shoplifting and pilferage, and developing an effective training scheme for new staff. Due to recent cash and inventory losses, the management wants to implement a POS system in combination with video cameras and a DVR to monitor the staff and customers. Since there is also a high turnover in cashiers, the store wants to have newly hired staff watch DVD training recordings when the store is not busy. The LCD KVM switches offer a space-saving, streamlined approach to KVM switch technology by integrating an LCD panel, full keyboard, and touchpad in a 1U single rail housing. The LCD display is built into the cover; the keyboard and touchpad are built into the base. Slide the KVM module out; flip the cover up; and you are ready to work. When you have finished, simply flip the cover down and slide the KVM module away. •

Easy Installation Options All LCD KVM Switches are rack-mountable using the standard rack mount kit provided with each purchase. Normal rack mounting is not difficult, but requires two people to accomplish the installation. To enable a single individual to easily and conveniently perform the installation, optional Single Person Easy Installation Rack Mount Kits are available to streamline the procedure.

Enhanced Console Control In addition to the console integrated into the LCD KVM Switch, it also contains a set of ports that let you connect an external KVM console. This provides administrators with the convenience and flexibility of using a standard keyboard/ monitor/mouse console. It also allows two users – to share access and control of the servers.

Space Efficient All-In-One Design ATEN's LCD KVM Switches provide a streamlined method to conserve server room rack space by integrating a retractable keyboard, LCD monitor, and touchpad with an 8 or 16 port KVM switch in a housing that is designed to install easily, and operate smoothly, in 1U of rack space.

The LCD KVM Switch's built-in fingerprint reader provides an alternate, more convenient, authentication method than logging in with a user name and password. For each user, 1 to 4 of their fingers can be scanned by the reader into the switch's internal database. Users are authenticated at login time by presenting any of their fingers for scanning. (Models with Fingerprint Identification Reader Only)

Dual Interface - Multi Platform Support For convenience and flexibility, LCD KVM Switches support optional custom cables or converters that allows mixing the PS/2 and USB interfaces on the same installation. Real Time Monitoring over Greater Distance at Less Cost

Serial Connectivity

Incorporation of an RS-232 serial port provides the ability to integrate serial connectivity devices – such as barcode scanners, POS terminals, kiosk touch screens, etc. – as part of the extender installation.

Use of inexpensive Cat 5e cable to connect the local and remote units instead of the expensive bulky cables used by traditional KVM extenders means that you can extend the distance between the units a great deal further – up to 300 m – while saving on cabling costs at the same time. •

CD Audio Quality

To ensure audio quality, our technology converts analog signals to digital signals. This reduces electromagnetic interference and provides better CD audio quality at sample sizes of 24-bit, with sample rates up to 48 kHz.

ATEN KVM extenders support a PS/2 or USB console at both the local and remote locations. Depending on what is most convenient at the moment, the computer can be controlled from either console.

Video

Automatic signal compensation is designed into the extender. The video signal strength is automatically adjusted to compensate for the distance between the computer and the console so the quality of the display doesn't deteriorate as you get further from the source. The result is clear, sharp, video at all supported distances.

USB Flash Drive Support A dedicated USB port for USB flash drives can be used for file transfer operations between the drive and the computer – upload/download files with ease. To make sure that security is not compromised, a password is required before any files can be uploaded to the computer.

Another feature that compensates for distance is the Deskew Function which automatically synchronizes the time delay of RGB signals to produce an excellent, crisp image over long distance transmissions. Not all products support these features. Please see each product’s features for details
